Eco Update: Canadian mining destroying Indigenous communities around the world

This edition of the Eco Update on AW@L Radio jumps into mining operations in Canada and elsewhere undertaken by Canadian corporations on behalf of their capitalist owners. We look to South and Latin America for updates on continuing violence perpetrated against anti-mining activists and other community members opposed to having an ecologically devestating mine on their land. We see how far logging copanies will go to intimidate Indigenous groups and we highlight a few ways to resist mining in Canada, including getting tied up in the toothless and corrupt environmental impact assessment process (CEAA).

We also have an important report from the Artic Methane Emergency Group who has advised those paying attention, that the Artic Ocean will be free of sea ice year round before the end of this decade - many years earlier then previously predicted. This will of course allow shipping and mining in the fragile waters, but more importantly, this will also significantly increase the rate of methane leak into the atmospherhe (as right now its all frozen beneath the sea), further driving climate change.

All this and more, and at least one tune "Mother Earth" from the Tra La Las (http://thetralalas.com)

From KW Spot Collective:
Given the fact that it has come to light that many people who were targeted for surveillance, infiltration and attack by the state around the g20 were done so for holding a “criminal ideology”, given that the organizations that were targeted were political organizations, and given that arrests are still being made around people who are political for speaking about there experience as victims of state attack, whose aims are to silence dissent, The Spot Collective is calling on all people to call or email the office of the Attorney general and demand political status for all g20 arrestees, as well as all other people in jail for political reasons and by doing so admit that Canada has political prisoners and act accordingly. Furthermore we are calling on people to demand that the Attorney General end the political persecution, incarceration, surveillance and criminalisation of protest, ideology and dissent.

<itunes:summary>We present a powerful blog post from: http://oforganon.tumblr.com/post/11150747104/to-all-those-men-who-dont-think-the-rape-jokes-are-a

I get it—you’re a decent guy. I can even believe it. You’ve never raped anybody. You would NEVER rape anybody. You’re upset that all these feminists are trying to accuse you of doing something, or connect you to doing something, that, as far as you’re concerned, you’ve never done and would never condone.

And they’ve told you about triggers, and PTSD, and how one in six women is a survivor, and you get it. You do. But you can’t let every time someone gets all upset get in the way of you having a good time, right? Especially when it doesn’t mean anything. Rape jokes have never made YOU go out and rape someone. They never would; they never could. You just don’t see how it matters.

I’m going to tell you how it does matter. And I tell you this because I genuinely believe you mean it when you say you don’t want to hurt anybody, and that it’s important to you to do your best to be a decent and good person, and that you don’t see the harm. And I genuinely believe you when you say you would never associate with a rapist and you think rape really is a very bad thing.

Here is why I refuse to take rape jokes sitting down…

Because 6% of college-aged men, slightly over 1 in 20, will admit to raping someone in anonymous surveys, as long as the word “rape” isn’t used in the description of the act—and that’s the conservative estimate. Other sources double that number (pdf).

A lot of people accuse feminists of thinking that all men are rapists. That’s not true. But do you know who think all men are rapists?

Rapists do.

They really do. In psychological study, the profiling, the studies, it comes out again and again.

Virtually all rapists genuinely believe that all men rape, and other men just keep it hushed up better. And more, these people who really are rapists are constantly reaffirmed in their belief about the rest of mankind being rapists like them by things like rape jokes, that dismiss and normalize the idea of rape.

If one in twenty guys (or more) is a real and true rapist, and you have any amount of social activity with other guys like yourself, then it is almost a statistical certainty that one time hanging out with friends and their friends, playing Halo with a bunch of guys online, in a WoW guild, in a pick-up game of basketball, at a bar, or elsewhere, you were talking to a rapist. Not your fault. You can’t tell a rapist apart any better than anyone else can. It’s not like they announce themselves.

But, here’s the thing. It’s very likely that in some of these interactions with these guys, at some point or another, someone told a rape joke. You, decent guy that you are, understood that they didn’t mean it, and it was just a joke. And so you laughed.

Or maybe you didn’t laugh. Maybe it just wasn’t a very funny joke. So maybe you just didn’t say anything at all.

And, decent guy who would never condone rape, who would step in and stop rape if he saw it, who understands that rape is awful and wrong and bad, when you laughed? When you were silent?

That rapist who was in the group with you, that rapist thought that you were on his side. That rapistknew that you were a rapist like him. And he felt validated, and he felt he was among his comrades.

You. The rapist’s comrade.

And if that doesn’t make you feel sick to your stomach, if that doesn’t make you want to throw up, if that doesn’t disturb you or bother you or make you feel like maybe you should at least consider not participating in that kind of humor anymore, not abiding it in your presence, not greeting it with silence…

Well, maybe you aren’t as opposed to rapists as you claim.

<itunes:summary>Controversial hip-hop duo Test Their Logik released their newest music
video "No One is Illegal" today, to commemorate so-called Canada Day. The
music video, directed and produced by film-maker Amy Miller of "Wide Open
Exposure", takes a strong stand against Canadian nationalism. Demanding the
abolition of all borders while calling attention to Canada's current system
of exploiting migrant labour for its own economic gain, the song's lyrics
unravel the root causes of immigration while pointing out the genocidal and
colonial underpinnings of the Canadian state.

"We 're releasing this video on Canada Day in an attempt to rain on your
racist parades," said Testament. "Today in every city across 'Canada'
millions of people will join together in the false unity of nationalism and
unknowingly be celebrating the genocide and theft of native land, the
exploitation of migrant workers, the jailing and deporting of refugees, and
Canada's imperial agenda overseas. We pledge allegiance to humanity as a
whole and the earth itself. Not to the queen or the flag or the nation."

The music video was largely shot during this year's May Day "Status For All"
demonstration, which was organized by No One is Illegal Toronto (NOII). In
support of NOII's organizing goals and principles Test Their Logik roamed
through the crowd performing, eventually making their way onto a rooftop for
a hip-hop set that erupted in to a street party. NOII is a strong
nation-wide radical migrant justice organization which also played a central
role in organizing resistance to both the Vancouver Olympics and the G8/G20
summit last year.

"I pledge allegiance to humanity not Canada" said Illogik. "The Canadian
state brands people as illegal immigrants to this land. In doing so they
create an easily exploitable and expendable underclass of people, generally
people of colour, who serve the needs of the capitalist system without
receiving any of the benefits of citizenship. Status For All! Stop The
Deportations!"

The video can be viewed at www.testtheirlogik.com as well at
http://vimeo.com/25691257 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrGluMzWgec
The song is also available on Test Their Logik's debut album "A", which can
be ordered online at crimethinc.com

"The Tra La Las consist of Emily Slofstra, Laura Ashfield and Janice Lee.

Their advocacy for social justice takes a front seat in some of their music, but it doesn’t overshadow their sense of humour, talent or their opportunity to bring joy and hope to their audience: an opportunity they are keen on exploiting.

Their stage held at least twice as many instruments as musicians, from the guitar to the omnichord. But if there is one defining feature of The Tra La Las it’s their harmonies. The trio create a sound that is both nostalgic and yet somehow fresh and unheard of at the same time." - Anthony Damaio, The Cord

Revolutionary words and music with hip-hop artist Testament of Test Their Logik

Now out of prison and again under house arrest, AW@L radio co-host ALex Hundert is back in on AW@L radio. This time he interviewes Testament from revolutionary hip-hop duo Test Their Logik.

Alex and Testament discuss hip-hop, community organizing, revolution, and the fucked-up-ness of the G20 police state/COINTELPRO shit that has been going on in Canada over the past 2 years (and beyond).

This podcast features tracks from Test Their Logik including the evidence in their conspiracy trial "G8/G20 Crash the Meetings," a re-mix of "Fuck the System," their new (and unmastered) track "Conspiracy Rap," and a couple of others.

Test Their Logik will be dropping a new album and going on tour across Turtle Island in March 2011.

03.15.2011- During last June's G20 protests, the Canadian government brought trumped up conspiracy charges against revolutionary rap group Test Their Logik, accusing the hip hop duo of causing the riot that destroyed downtown with their hit video "Crash the Meeting." The two were imprisoned, then forbidden contact upon release, as part of a massive campaign of repression that ultimately targeted over 1000 people.

Now that the prosecutors have admitted that their charges were groundless and dropped their no-contact injunction, Test Their Logik are back in action and coming harder than ever. Featuring a cameo by fan Glenn Beck of Fox News, their new video "Conspiracy Rap" sends a "big fuck" you to the ones who tried to stop them and offers a preview of their first official album, which they will release this May. Like "Crash The Meeting," this video was produced by Anarkid, a self-taught multi-media warrior and VJ from Montreal.

"We're pushing that revolutionary hip-hop movement forward bustin' on the system," said Testament, one half of Test Their Logik. "We ain't scared, we ain't fazed, we comin' harder than ever to help inspire new waves of confrontations with authority and domination."

Test Their Logik will be touring extensively this spring to support the release of their new album, showing that resistance cannot be stopped by any amount of repression. Meanwhile, over a dozen people still face serious charges as part of the same conspiracy rap the Canadian government tried to pin on Test Their Logik.

<itunes:summary>As the Liberal government in Ontario continue their attacks on the poor, anti-poverty activists in Kitchener-Waterloo are rallying the community to support each other and fight austerity!

Protect the Special Diet Allowance, Raise the Rates and Promote Access to Healthy Food for Everyone!

The Ministry of Community and Social Services says "some people will stop getting an allowance." We say this is unacceptable!

Interviews with Kitchener-Waterloo-based anti-poverty activists Ian and Alison of the SPOT Collective and AW@L.

Background
In March 2010, the McGuinty government announced the planned cancellation of the Special Diet Allowance, a fund for people receiving social assistance who have medical conditions, leaving it unclear whether those who currently receive this vital support would be covered under a new plan. Now, the government has removed many of the conditions previously eligible, indicating that "some people will stop getting an allowance." This is yet another blow to poor people in Ontario. OW and ODSP rates are already woefully inadequate, leaving their recipients struggling to afford food and housing. Increases for cost of living have lagged behind inflation since 1995. While corporations get tax cuts, the Ontario Liberals are balancing the budget on the backs of the poor.

This Saturday, join us for free clothing and toy give-aways, music, speakers and an opportunity to share your experiences as we denounce these policies and call for justice. This will be a kid-friendly rally.

Following the rally there will be an anti-gentrification march hosted by the Spot Collective.

See you there!

Even this concrete cage can't dampen his resolve: Another jailhouse interview with Alex Hundert

He is still in jail... :(

Since June's Toronto G20 Summit, AW@L Radio co-host Alex Hundert has spent over 5 months behind bars -- having been forcefully abducted and held captive by a system of injustice in Ontario.

He has been granted bail twice, with ridiculous and baseless re-arrests following each release; including one arrest for speaking at a university on a panel, and another arrest for allegedly sticking his tongue out at the crown attorney (or something like that...).

The crown attorneys have shown obvious bias by having Alex re-arrested twice after they failed in keeping alex locked up at the original bail hearings.

I STILL WANT MY CO-HOST BACK! FREE ALEX HUNDERT!

<itunes:summary>Since June's Toronto G20 summit, AW@L Radio co-host Alex Hundert has spent over 5 months behind bars -- having been forcefully abducted and held captive by a system of injustice in Ontario.

I WANT MY CO-HOST BACK! FREE ALEX HUNDERT!

We are pleased to present a jailhouse interview with AW@L Radio co-host Alex Hundert where we speak of Bill C-49, the New Year's Eve jail solidarity demos, communities of unity and support and more!

</itunes:summary>
<itunes:subtitle>Alex Hundert remains in prison for being an effective community organizer and an outspoken anarchist critic of the dominant powers and their narrative. We give him space for his own narrative!</itunes:subtitle>

After a similar discussion on the 17th of September at Ryerson University, one of the panelists and AW@L Radio co-host, Alex Hundert, was arrested for allegedly violating his bail conditions (http://peaceculture.org/drupal/node/659). The police and the crown allege that speaking in a panel discussion constitutes a violation of his unjust "no protest" condition. Hundert was again released on bail under even more draconian bail conditions (including no expressing political opinion or talking to AW@L radio co-host @dankellar), only to be re-arrested after a petty crown attorney alleged Alex's gaze could turn people into stone (or something along those lines - http://peaceculture.org/drupal/node/694).

Alex remains in jail and will until after his next court appearance on January 31st 2011 http://peaceculture.org/drupal/node/715

This is a Pay What You Can event. All contributions go to the G20 Legal Defence Fund (http://g20.torontomobilize.org/support)

While 40,000 demonstrated and over 1000 were arrested in the streets of Toronto, so-called leaders met behind a security fence and 10,000 police to further their exploitation of people and the Earth. Hundreds face G20-related charges stemming from an unprecedented coordinated police operation, and political dissent remains criminalised as arrests of community organizers have occurred as recently as September.

Meanwhile, across the globe we see G20 austerity measures snatching away health, educational and social services, while the governments of G20 countries continue to bail out banks and corporations. Locally, we witness racist criminalization of migrants and refugees becoming more vicious, while colonization and destruction of Indigenous nations and their lands continues. Many of us daily experience the entrenchment of a racist, ableist, patriarchal, queer-phobic, profit-driven culture, while countless bodies bear the violence of an oppressive police state that enforces these norms.

Join us in this event with speakers and discussion about responses the G20 agenda, and making linkages across issues and ongoing struggles. With courage and with care, this event is about building solidarity and understanding, about creating real alternatives to this exploitative and destructive system, and to strengthen our resolve to continue resisting.
