Do YOU have a dog? is a spirited look at dogs in history, a topic not often covered in children’s picture books. This brightly illustrated book is a great way to introduce early readers to a handful of historical figures. Author Ellen Spinelli did a great job making history engaging for every age. Do YOU have a dog? provides basic historical information for the young readers it is intended for, while not being didactic. Teasing out just enough history, precocious children will be urged to learn more.

Illustrated by Geraldo Valério, the pages are whimsical, and eye-catching. Geraldo’s bold use of color and smiling characters gives Do YOU have a dog? a happy and upbeat feeling. The rhyming text makes this a fun book to read aloud, with only the occasional awkward phrase for a tired parent tongue to trip over.

Kids, and adults that read to them, will enjoy this book, especially if they own (are owned by?) a dog.

]]> I love being surprised, but I not often am. I usually figure things out before they happen. My husband was able to surprise me once…I’m not sure if he’ll ever be able to do it again.

When I first started subscribing to boxes, there were mostly snack boxes…now you can get nearly anything.
