Success can be different things to different people: a published book, a good marriage, home mortgage paid off, 5,000 friends on Facebook, a dream job, a bunch of rental properties, own a company or corporation, grandkids, worldwide travel, multiple homes, etc.

That’s what’s so great about being human—we have choices.

And it seems age can also be a factor…

At age   4 success is… Not piddling in your pants.

At age 12 success is… Having friends.

At age 17 success is… Having a driver’s license.

At age 35 success is… Having money.

At age 50 success is… Having money.

At age 70 success is… Having a driver’s license.

At age 75 success is… Having friends.

At age 80 success is… Not piddling in your pants.

I’ve listened to many, many teleseminars on a multitude of topics: author platform, internet marketing, radio interviews to name a few. I confess—I can be an information junkie.

One day the topic was web site hosting. The speaker had many web sites and was making tens of thousands of dollars each month. He shared that he had just had major trouble with a hosting company (name unknown) where all his sites were down for over a day. So he was in the process of switching all his sites to Hostgator because of their impeccable customer service.

Well I figured if it’s good enough for Mr. Wealthy Internet Marketer, then it was good enough for me. I was such a newbie and had no idea what I was doing. And you know… every time I called (which was a lot at first), the hostgator staff never once told me that my questions were stupid. Even the time I did a really silly thing (locked all the images on multiple sites), they patiently helped me solve the problem during a half-hour support call. They are very patient and kind. Priceless.

One of my clients used another hosting company. The only way she could contact support was via email or online ticket. Often they’d take 24+ hours to respond. Even if the monthly fee had been less (which it was not)—having to wait for a response, which may or may not solve the issue or answer your question, will not help you build your online presence quickly.

I recommend that every author have an online presence so that it’s easy to connect with your tribe. One of the most effective ways is with a self-hosted WordPress web site. (we’ll talk about this another time).

Self-hosted just means that you need to have an account with a hosting company.

Decide which plan

Unless you already have multiple web sites, sign up for the single domain. You can always upgrade with just a quick phone call.

“Whenever I talk with Sam, my husband, about something I don’t want Jason who is 6 years old to know about, I’ll spell a word. Inevitably, Jason asks what that spells, and I usually answer him, “If I wanted you to know, I wouldn’t have spelled it.”

The other day Sam offered me some fish crackers. I thought they tasted odd, so I declined. Not wanting to plant ideas in Jason’s head so he would still eat them, I told Sam they tasted like “c-a-r-d-b-o-a-r-d.”

Apparently, I spelled it a little too fast, because Sam asked, “What?” Immediately, Jason replied to him “If she wanted you to know, she wouldn’t have spelled it.”

It was perfect timing, and, of course, it made perfect sense to Jason, so he didn’t understand why Sam and I were laughing so hard. It was priceless!”

Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community. Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say ‘Hell’ to someone who doesn’t care much about you.

For those of you who have children and don’t know it, we have a nursery downstairs.

Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get..

Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days.

A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow.

At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be ‘What Is Hell?’ Come early and listen to our choir practice.

Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones.

Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children.

Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered.

The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment and gracious hostility.

Potluck supper Sunday at 5:00 PM – prayer and medication to follow.

The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon.

This evening at 7 PM there will be a hymn singing in the park across from the Church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin.

Ladies Bible Study will be held Thursday morning at 10 AM. All ladies are invited to lunch in the Fellowship Hall after the B. S. Is done.

The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the Congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday.

Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 PM. Please use the back door.

The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the Church basement Friday at 7 PM. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy.

Weight Watchers will meet at 7 PM at the First Presbyterian Church. Please use large double door at the side entrance.

The Associate Minister unveiled the church’s new campaign slogan last Sunday: ‘I Upped My Pledge – Up Yours.
