Cake Topper Friday: Rainy Wedding Day Topper

Take it from a former bride who went a weensy bit control freak on her wedding party: learn to roll with the punches NOW. Because something WILL go wrong on your big day.

And it should, you know? I mean, life isn’t perfect. And learning to deal with an imperfect life will only make you a FAR more pleasant life partner to that cute guy (or girl) that you’re calling Shnookums these days.

I don’t know if this particular Rainy Day Wedding Cake Topper was some adorableness planned for a soggy clime, like Portland or London…or if the the bride and groom love rainy days, or met in the rain, or rain nourished their farm. But I do know that this couple EXPECTS the unexpected…and even prepares for it (Look at her ADORABLE WELLIES, WILL YOU?) And that, My Friends, is a very good way to enter into a marriage.

Jimmy Buffet-Inspired Wedding Cake

You want colorful? Oh, we can do colorful.

I am full-on in the throes of summer, y’all. I mean, I want to cruise. I want to put the earbuds in and read a novel. I want to swing in a hammock with nothing but the view through my Maui Jims.

This Jimmy Buffet-Inspired cake, by Sherri Meyers and her incredibly talented staff at The Pastry Studio in Daytona Beach, Florida, suits me just fine today. And everyday, in fact. Sherri made the cake for a wedding shower, and I have to say it: that had to be one fun party.

Sugarpaste parrots, tropical florals, and bamboo complete the lush look. And the flavors? The small tier is red velvet (the couple’s favorite) and the larger one for sharing was made with a key lime filling. Sign. Me. Up.

DIY Fondant Roses Wedding Cake

Hey y’all!

I featured a link to this beautiful cake a few weeks back in my Let Them Eat Cake Sunday Round-Up. But I loved it so much that I reached out to the Wedding Chicks girls and asked if we could show it off in its own post.

Roses are just so pretty, and never, ever go out of style. And there’s not an ugly one out there, you know? Every color, every variety. They’re so pretty, and ladylike, and classic. They’re old-fashioned, and yet they never go out of style.

I also love that there are so many ways that you can interpret a rose for a cake. You can, of course, use fresh roses, like we have one this beautiful orange cake. You can pipe them from buttercream, and make them look real or stylized. You can fashion them from sugarpaste as well. But today, we’re featuring something that you can totally DIY for your wedding cake or another special occasion: fondant roses.

This cake is beautiful anyway, with its pressed molded lace. But isn’t the bounty of ethereal white roses on the bottom layer just darling?

Lighthouse Cake

And here’s one for ME!

I love lighthouses, and I love Kara Buntin of A Cake to Remember in Richmond, Virginia (seriously, brides and bakers…READ HER BLOG.) So that prettymuch guaranteed that you were going to see this cake.

So here’s deal…this isn’t actually a wedding cake. But it COULD be. Or it could be a groom’s cake (but it isn’t, that I know of.)

But don’t you love it? It’s a base cake (yep! that graham cracker crumb sand is covering cake, too!) with a 24-inch tall lighthouse on top of it. Lighthouses speak to me of warmth, and strength, and safety. I just love looking at them, climbing them, thinking about all the ships and boats they’ve saved. A few replicas might have crept into my decorating through the years.

Kara made this cake almost as sturdy as the real thing, because the client was picking it up. The black and white strips are made of molding chocolate and candy clay to lend extra rigidity. The foliage, rocks, and shells are all candy, fondant, and chocolate. Even the beacon, made of isomalt (fancy sugar substitute that you can pull and mold, and it isn’t as finicky as pulled sugar) is edible! The only thing you can’t eat is the beacon’s covering.

If I thought it would survive the trip from Virginia, I think I would request a Ponce Inlet lighthouse replica from Kara for my next shindig.

Plumeria and Ruffles Wedding Cake

This one…is for my mom. Happy Belated Mothers’ Day, Mom! Here’s your wedding cake!

My mom took the trip of a life time a few years back with one of her best chums and my grandmother – to Hawaii, some place Mom and MaMa (remember, I’m from West Virginia, y’all) had always wanted to go. They came back absolutely in LOVE with plumeria, the beautiful flower pictured on this cake. I couldn’t imagine the beauty, they said. It smelled so wonderful, they said.

I don’t know if another trip down the aisle is in the cards for my Mom, but if it is, and if she has gotten past the Martha Stewart cake she made me promise that I’d make for her if this ever happened, then this beautiful cake, with it’s simple fondant covering and sweet ruffle and plumeria finish, would be just the thing.

This lovely cake was the handiwork of Flour Fancies, Inc., in North York, Ontario.

Happy Mother’s Day! And if you aren’t a mother, then feel free to wish me a Happy Mother’s Day!

I don’t know what today will hold – I’m heartily hoping for a little pampering, quiet, and possibly a nap – but I’m thankful for my babies, and I’m thankful that I still have my mom with me. I also have a life filled with so many dear sweet women and girlfriends who have been mentors and confidantes. So I’m glad to share this day with them as well.

The busy wedding season is certainly upon us! And so we should get right to it, yes? But first, let’s take a look back at what we’ve been up to this week here at A Wedding Cake Blog with all the Sweet:

For the Guys: Union Jack Groom’s Cake Inspiration

So…maybe it’s a little “backyard barbecue” – or whatever the equivalent is Across the Pond – but I thought this cake was pretty darn adorable.

I think that it was technically created to fete the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on their special day last year, but I just fell in love with it. Wouldn’t the Union Jack, made out of summer-fresh berries, be the perfect way to celebrate your Main Squeeze on your own Wedding Day? If he’s a lover of all things British, a few things British, or IS, in fact, British, I think this would be pretty cool. And if your guy is a Yank, then just change up the design!

Cake Topper Friday: Chalkboard Cake Topper

I have a couple of teacher friends who super need this in their lives!

This is crazy adorable! It’s the original customizable cake topper…as in you can customize it over and over and over again! Use it for your wedding, and then re-use for anniversaries, birthdays, or even your future children’s (sniff, tear) first birthday celebration.

Peony Pearl Wedding Cake

We are lovers to the max of Pink Cake Box around here. My partner, Christen introduced me to their work. You’ll know when I’m scrolling through their blog, because you’ll hear saying things like “Agh!” And “Gahhh!” And “Gorgeous!” My family probably thinks I’m having some kind of torrid love affair with my laptop.

I spied this cake on the blog just a few days ago, and Anne Heap and her talented staff graciously let me share the incredible pretty with all of you! The cake is four layers of sumptuous vanilla cake layered with rich chocolate buttercream. The outside is outfitted prettily with lime-green fondant, for the perfect “spring has sprung” feel! The cake is then showered with fondant pearls of different sizes, drizzled randomly down the sides. Each layer is trimmed with a pearl border, as well as a sugar flower peony, and the cake is crowned with a nosegay of creamy white flouncy flowers. Simply fantastic.

Gothic Wedding Cake

I think I spy Victor Van Dort and his Corpse Bride!

Isn’t this fabulous? This gothic cake by Marianne of Dazzlelicious Cakes in Plymouth, UK, is the talk of the town. I absolutely LOVE the cool, ghosty blue and black motif. Black and blue roses, y’all! And swags and swags and stripes and swirls. This is an amazing cake, and this was a really fun wedding, I just know it.

There is just so much going on here! Check out the trim on the layers: pearls on some, black lace on others. The black crescent moon, and puffy boa. The butterflies scattered throughout. I must confess…I’m not a goth girl at heart, but this marriage (ha!) of goth and vintage has me hooked!
