Hey all,

I've been thinking that we are in one of the most opportune times in musical history. The amount, variety, and availability of music today is astounding.

Music is everywhere! So many formats - CD's, Mp3's, Radio, Downloads, Cassettes (yes, I said cassettes!), and now it seem even vinyl records are making a come-back.

I found this article a while back, it's titled: "Vinyl Gets It's Groove Back". It may not last long, but today we can experience music in so many ways that it's a shame if we don't take advantage of it.

If you are adventurous you can roam the web for hours finding new music, the problem is we are so accustomed to being told what is worth hearing that most of us have lost the ability to judge for ourselves....

What a wasted opportunity if we let this golden time slip away....

Death of the CD?

Hey all,

The music industry is in the midst of a crisis, it's a crisis of format and technology.

Nielsen Soundscan (the company that keeps track of CD sales) reports that CD sales were down by 15% in the year 2007. They also reported only 500.5 million sales of CD's that year. This from an article by Alex Veiga from the Associated Press. Digital music sales on the other hand were up about 45%.

Is this the death of the CD?

I still believe in the "hard copy".
I like to be able to hold something tangible in my hand. I'm 'Old School' and it took me a long time to adjust to the small size of the CD label - I'm more used to the large Album Covers I grew up with - am I going to be stuck with the itty-bitty digital icons from now on? Have my liner notes been turned into simple mp3 tags?

Say it ain't so!

Anyway, for those of you who feel like I do I've made my CD "The Late Show" available in both CD and Digital formats. I'm longing for the BIG cover, but I'm not going straight to itty-bitty- icon-land just yet. I'll spend a little more time in the mid-zone with my small (but readable) CD jewel cases.

Grateful.... yeah, I remember.

Let's talk....

Today's word is Grateful.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines the adjective grateful as:
1. Appreciative of benefits received; thankful. 2. Expressing gratitude. 3. Affording pleasure or comfort; agreeable.

What is there to be grateful about? That is a common view these days, but it is a view that has its eye on the temporal, the changing, the material. It fails to look at the things that God has truly provided and what He has in store for us.

We as a society have become addicted to fast gratification - instant satisfaction - and always more....
No matter what we have: "Happiness is just 'round the bend" - and it will only come with the acquiring of some "other" thing. We've lost touch will the still quiet moment. We've lost touch with just what a blessing truly is.

Philippians 4:5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

This scripture admonishes us to come before God in prayer with our requests, but also with gratitude for the things He has already done for and in us. Why should God give us more when we aren't grateful for what we already have? Count your blessings. No, really - count your blessings! One of my favorite sayings is: "My attitude is gratitude." and it's not just a saying, but a way of life.

Take time - turn off the T.V., cut off the radio, get quiet and reflect on the good things that God has placed in your life. Slow down and take account of your blessings. Focus on the benefits you have been given - sure you have negatives in your life, don't focus on them - they aren't of God. Limit your thoughts to what you have, not what you don't have. Take inventory and be grateful.

Give thanks. Not just when you recieve some great blessing, but give thanks at all times. TELL God what you are thankful for - open your mouth and say it out loud - as He hears it, you will too.... Blessings come from acknowledging what God through Jesus has done in your life, not by complaining to God about what you don't have. To receive that "peace of God, which passeth all understanding", we MUST do what He as said.

Fellowship.... we are not alone.

Today's word is Fellowship.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines fellowship as:

1. The condition of sharing similar interests, ideals, or experiences, as by reason of profession, religion, or nationality. b. The companionship of individuals in a congenial atmosphere and on equal terms. 2. A close association of friends or equals sharing similar interests. 3. Friendship; comradeship.

In this day and age it's not always easy to find those whom we can truly have fellowship with. Quite often the people we find ourselves around don't share our beliefs, ideals, or interests. We find true fellowship with others who have the same fellowship with our Lord Jesus.

This fellowship we have with God consist in knowing His will, an agreement with His designs, an enjoyment of His presence, and conformity to His image. Often we try to establish fellowship with those who neither know His will, agree with His designs, know of His presence, nor are they attempting to conform to His image.

Though it may be hard to find fellowship in your workplace or even your neighborhood, God in His wisdom has established a place where it can be found - His Church. Having a church home is paramount for good fellowship. We need to be around others of like mind and actions.

We have Christ's promise that He will never leave us nor forsake us, but we need human fellowship also. We need others who care about us, and about whom we can care. Again I encourage you to find a place of worship that you can call you own - we all need a church home. Don't delay - seek your home today.

Today's word is Optimist. (ŏp'tə-mĭst)
The American Heritage Dictionary defines the noun optimist as:
1. One who usually expects a favorable outcome.

Having an optimistic attitude is great as long as it's based in the Lord. All else is folly. The saying goes that "ignorance is bliss", but the reality is that ignorance is the companion of disobedience.

What you don't know CAN hurt you....

Having a "Don't worry, be happy" attitude to life without the knowledge of the Lord is a sure road to destruction. As Christians we don't worry, but it's because we are sure of God's care for us - Scripture instructs us about what to do with all our pressing cares:
I Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you.

The "tomorrow" that we look for is prepared for us already. All of the trials that we go through - and we never go through alone - are not enough to be counted against the glory God has prepared for us. We are saved, but not in possession of a "charmed life". Fierce winds may blow through our lives, but we remain optimistic because of God's promises:
I Peter 4:12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when His glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

Christian hold you head up in the storm, your glass is not half empty - it's half full.

Today's word is Excellent.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines the adjective excellent as:

Of the highest or finest quality; exceptionally good of its kind.
Archaic Superior.

God alone is excellent! There is nothing and no one that comes even close to His glory. We all fall short in one aspect or another, and none of us is truly excellent at anything. Our whole concept of excellence is founded in the remnant of God in us. We can see the possibility, but only in Him can we find it in reality.

Scripture says:
Psalm 8:1 O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.

and....

Psalm 36:7 How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.

and....

Psalm 148:13 Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven.

What a mighty God we serve, take time to reflect on His excellence! Observe the work of His hands, and study His Word. Even in the midst of this sin sick and perverted world, if you take the time to look - you will see the excellence of God.

Influence.... what difference can I make?

The American Heritage Dictionary defines the noun influence as:

A power affecting a person, thing, or course of events, especially one that operates without any direct or apparent effort: relaxed under the influence of the music; the influence of television on modern life.
Power to sway or affect based on prestige, wealth, ability, or position: used her parent's influence to get the job.

We are constantly influenced by the things around us. There are many things that come into our lives throughout the day that have an affect on us. Sometimes we don't even realize that we are being affected by our surroundings.

Quite often people say that they don't see why they need to go to church. I understand their feelings - just going to church isn't much help, it's when you become part of a church family that you begin to feel the value of it. We need the influence of other Christians in our lives.

You may not change the world, but if you hang out with it long enough - it will certainly change you. What we see, what we hear, gets inside us and influences our behaviour. If we are surrounded by negative thoughts and people, we grow negative ourselves. If we are surrounded by unbelief, it tends to weaken our own resolve.

Decide for yourself today to become aware of the influences in your life, avoid those negative contacts and strengthen the influences that help you to grow spiritually.

Make an effort to spend time alone with the Word of God. Attend your local church faithfully, and if you don't have a church home - find one as soon as possible. Everybody needs one. Just as our lives are influenced by the home we are raised in, so too our spiritual lives are influenced by the church home we are spiritually raised in. Seek a home where the Word is taught, where earnest folks are seeking God's guidance, and where there is a praying spirit present.

Scripture tells us:
Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Intrinsic Value.... ain't it worth nothing?

Today's word is a phrase - Intrinsic Value.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines the adverb intrinsic as:
1. Of or relating to the essential nature of a thing; inherent.
and the noun value as:
3. Worth in usefulness or importance to the possessor; utility or merit:
so an accurate definition of intrinsic value would be - something that in and of itself has a usefulness, importance, and merit to the possessor.

Not many things have intrinsic value. Gold doesn't. Gold has value only in the marketplace. Take away the marketplace and gold is worthless. This is true of all 'valuables' taken from the earth.

Most things derive their value from other factors - the marketplace, desire, supposed need. But very few things bring any value with them.

God is different. He has value all in Himself. If you possess Him, you possess everything you will ever need. He brings it all. Why settle for the treats this world has to offer when you can possess the offerer? The one who is the author of all things - Jesus the Christ.

A closer walk with God is the first step to the possession of all the things you truly need. Scripture tells us:
Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

Remember that all that is real dwells within Christ. The things that bring true value to your life come from a relationship with Jesus.

Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Wisdom.... tell me something I don't know.

Today's word is Wisdom.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines the noun wisdom as:

The ability to discern or judge what is true, right, or lasting; insight.
Common sense; good judgment: "It is a characteristic of wisdom not to do desperate things" (Henry David Thoreau).
1. The sum of learning through the ages; knowledge: "In those homely sayings was couched the collective wisdom of generations" (Maya Angelou).
2. Wise teachings of the ancient sages.
A wise outlook, plan, or course of action.
Wisdom Bible Wisdom of Solomon.

Wisdom is more than just the collection of facts and figures that we know, it is the knowledge to know how to make use of what we know. Information is everywhere today, so is learning and knowledge, yet wisdom is sorely lacking.

The more intelligent we become the more inclined we are to rely on ourselves for guidance and wisdom. Scripture tells us differently:
Proverbs 2:6 For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

Wisdom is a spiritual gift of God. It is precious!
Proverbs 3:13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.
15 She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.
16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.
17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.

Unfortunately wisdom cannot be taught - but extra-fortunately we can receive it:
James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

In everything we do we need wisdom, common sense won't do. Intelligence won't do. Knowledge alone won't do. Our decisions must be founded in wisdom or they are founded in folly. When I was younger there was a popular saying: "Educated fools", it was used to describe people who had a lot of educational training, but lacked common sense. Through the years I've come to find that there are a lot of "Educated fools" and it has nothing to do with educational training or common sense - it has to do with faith in God.

We search for riches and health, success and prosperity - but we neglect the source of all these things.... Jesus the Christ.

Exalt.... lift Him up!

Today's word is Exalt. (ĭg-zôlt')
The American Heritage Dictionary defines the verb exalt as:

To raise in rank, character, or status; elevate.
To glorify, praise, or honor.

This word describes our humble attempts to glorify the name of God, as we lift both Him and our fellows up. In all that we do, we are to see that God is glorified. Our actions ought to reflect the fact that our God is 'high and lifted up'.

Others may curse God, but our lives ought to show forth the glory of the Lord. In our triumphs, and even in our failures - we are to acknowledge His greatness. We lift Him up by giving Him the credit due to Him - don't credit 'luck' for what God has done. Don't credit 'circumstance' for the victories God gives. Don't credit 'good fortune' for His blessings! Give God the praise! Say it out loud - Exalt Him!

Share His goodness with others. Talk about the victories He has given you. In your quiet time, open your heart and let loose your love for Him. It might come in a shout, it might come in tears, but let it go.... let Him know that you know He cares.

The psalmist said:

Psalm 43:2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.
3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.

Imperturbable.... not shaken or stirred.

Today's word is Imperturbable. (ĭm'pər-tûr'bə-bəl)
The American Heritage Dictionary defines the adjective imperturbable as:
1. Unshakably calm and collected.

This word describes a state of confidence - not indifference. This is not about 'what ever will be will be', rather it's about knowing that all things work together for our good - if we are the called of the Lord.

When we realize that our strength comes from the Lord, and not from the things we see and feel, we arrive at a place of confidence in His provision for us. When we have done our best and truly placed our lives in His hand we can say with imperturbable confidence - Let it be!

We learn to not be 'Bi-polar Christians', bouncing off the walls when material blessings come and draped in sack-cloth and ash when faced with trials. We rest assured that God is in control and do as scripture advises:
I Peter 5:6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Resolute.... I won't turn loose.

The American Heritage Dictionary defines the adjective resolute as:
1. Firm or determined; unwavering.

This word describes the love God has for us, and the love we ought to show Him. We have the assurance that God will never leave us or forsake us, can He count on us the same way?

Good days or bad days our praise for God should remain the same. Our commitment to this Christian life ought to remain the same. Our love of God must remain the same.

There has never been a time in my life that the sun wasn't shining. At night it is shining, the part of the earth I live on is just turned from it. On a cloudy day it is still shining, though the clouds temporarily block it's view. God is much like that, we may not always feel His concern, but He is always there.

Trials come and trial go, but nothing - again I say nothing.... can separate us from the love of God!

Romans 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Today's word is Courageous.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines the adjective courageous as:
1. Having or characterized by courage; valiant.

Courageous and valiant are words that don't get much use now at days. They are words that describe personal character, and require deep abiding belief in some principle.

Today's soundtrack may sound a little hooky, but it describes the heart-felt convictions of a good man. Someone who really believes in the things he is fighting for. Today it is hard to find such people. People who are willing to give all for a worthy cause. People who are willing to go against the 'crowd' if it means that have to compromise their convictions.

Just for today Christian, be courageous in the things of God. Don't compromise with this world order - stand your ground. Display your faith in God by living this day true to His principles. Don't curse because the 'crowd' does, don't gossip because the 'crowd' does, don't deny Jesus Christ because the 'crowd' does.

We are not called to live by 'polls', public opinion and 'peer-pressure' shouldn't affect the way we think or act. We are called by God into a life well pleasing in His sight. If you believe the testimony God has given of Himself, live like you believe it!

Display Godly strength:
Ephesians 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

Satisfaction.... what, me?

Today's word is Satisfaction.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines the noun satisfaction as:

The fulfillment or gratification of a desire, need, or appetite.
Pleasure or contentment derived from such gratification.
A source or means of gratification.

Ah America, it seems the more we have the more we want. Satisfaction is in short order. No matter what we have, there is always something that someone says we ought to have - that we don't have yet.

If we can't find satisfaction, (and we accept the above definition of satisfaction) we have to check our desires, needs, and appetites. Maybe our expectations are out of line.

What do you truly desire? Have you ever had a desire fulfilled? Were you satisfied?
What do you truly need? Have your needs ever been met? Were you satisfied?
What are your appetites? Have they ever been fed? Were you satisfied?

Society shouldn't impose it's standard for satisfaction on us. Satisfaction is a personal achievement, nobody can make you satisfied. You must find it for yourself.

Satisfaction doesn't come from people, places, or things - it is found in a right relationship with the source of all things - God. Ignoring this simple truth is the source of our frustration. When we desire His presence in our lives, realize that our only need is Him (He is the supplier), and set our appetites on the things of God - satisfaction surely follows.

Scripture tells us:
Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Notice the absence of an (s) on the word need. It is not the things that God wishes to supply, but His Holy Presence in your life.

Forgiven.... guilty but not condemned.

Today's word is Forgiven.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines the verb forgiven as:

To excuse for a fault or an offense; pardon.
To renounce anger or resentment against.
To absolve from payment of (a debt, for example).

Forgiven, an easy word to say - a hard act to do. It requires the love of God to forgive the wrongs that have been done to us. Revenge is our natural reaction to hurts.

There is a young man in Michigan named Nathaniel Abraham, who was convicted at the age of 11 of killing another young man. His case has been watched closely by many. Recently he was released from jail after serving his time and set to appear on the Oprah Winfrey show.

There was talk that on that show he would apologize to the family of Ronnie Green Jr. the young man he was convicted of killing. The apology apparently took place in Oprah's office though because those involved wanted to keep the meeting as private and personal as possible under the conditions.

Guilty but not condemned. It's a point we all have to reach, we have to accept that a wrong has been done to us, and we have to move on. Hatred and animosity are companions and killers. They kill our joy, and rob us of the power to love.

It has been reported that Ronnie Green Jr.'s brother Chris accepted Abraham's apology and stated that he had forgiven him. That's a start. There are so many who aren't even involved with this case who have condemned this young man who need to forgive him also.

Doesn't it seem wrong to forgive someone when you know them to be guilty?
Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Thank God that Jesus didn't think so....

Blasphemy.... challenge?

The American Heritage Dictionary defines the noun blasphemy as:
1. a. A contemptuous or profane act, utterance, or writing concerning God or a sacred entity.
2. An irreverent or impious act, attitude, or utterance in regard to something considered inviolable or sacrosanct.

Last night (Jan. 30, 2007) the ABC program 'Nightline' featured a story about a group of young people who have created a website which offers a so-called "Blasphemy Challenge".

To enter, you make a video of yourself blaspheming God - specifically the Holy Spirit. The first 1001 entries will receive a DVD.

Kind of reminds me of the lyrics - 'Would you like to swing on a star and carry moonbeams home in a jar.... or would you rather be a pig?' - a real no-brainer there! Are we truly so far gone that we feel compelled to tempt God? It speaks to the corrupt nature of the flesh that we would seek out the unpardonable sin.

True blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is to deny His pleas to us to the very end of our lives. If we don't heed His call while there is blood running warm through our veins, then there is no help for us. We are eternally lost.

Many people say they don't believe this is true. God allows you that freedom of thought, but He tells you the consequence of your decision also - eternal damnation. Truly it's not our sins which will condemn us, it is our lack of faith. Through Jesus Christ we can receive forgiveness of sin, but without faith we can't receive Jesus Christ.

What is to be gained in blasphemy against God? Is it truly a badge of praise today to be counted among the God-less? Is ANY DVD that valuable? Is fifteen minutes of fame worth an eternity of damnation?

Friends, hold fast to the faith. Pray for the decieved. Live for Christ. We are God's testimony in the flesh:
Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Salvation.... ain't that an army?

Today's word is Salvation.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines the noun salvation as:

Deliverance from the power or penalty of sin; redemption.
The agent or means that brings about such deliverance.

As Christians, we believe that salvation is the gift of God to those who believe on His son Jesus Christ. It is our faith in Jesus that sets us free from sin and death.

Now, this faith is a progressive thing. It requires that I stay in it. I demonstrate my faith in Jesus by living the precepts He taught:
John 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

Many people delude themselves that they have salvation - based on a passing knowledge of the reality of Christ. But true citizenship in the kingdom of God requires a true relationship with His Son.

Check yourself today, is your relationship strong? Is your faith sure? Do you really know Him?

Knowledge of Christ, without a Christian lifestyle is not a way to please God. Neither is a Christian lifestyle without a true relationship with Christ. In other words - they fail who claim to know Christ yet live as heathen. And they also fail who live as Christians but have no real relationship with Jesus.

Make no mistake your salvation hinges on faith in and relationship with Jesus Christ, all else is imaginary salvation.

Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Something declared to be true; a positive statement or judgment.

I changed the format of this blog to a word a day for a good reason. That reason is - the power of the words we use. The more negative words we use, the more negative we tend to become. Our vocabularies reflect our state of mind, and influence the state of mind of others.

Words are powerful tools, they can be useful to our up building (as in compliments) or destructive to our souls (as in cursings). Remember that scripture tells us that God spoke the world into existence!

A limited vocabulary can be very dangerous to our growth, if we have more negative words in our vocabulary than positive. But, it's also important that we know what the words that we use mean. Quite often misunderstandings happen simply because we don't really know what we've said, or what others are saying to us.

As we arm ourselves with both words and understanding, we can be a positive force to those around us. Choose your words carefully. Never stop learning new ones, and make sure you understand the words you use.

Psalms 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

Today's word is a phrase - 'U can't touch this'
It was popularized by M. C. Hammer in the 90's. but it holds a truth that goes far beyond what he intended.

When applied to our spirit, it helps us recognize who we really are. None of our true self can be touched. When we look in a mirror all that we see is an image of our bodies - not an image of our spirits.

This song, taken in a spiritual sense, reminds us to separate our flesh from our spirit. It reminds us that there is much more to us than the eye can see, or the hand can touch.

We provide for our flesh daily - and not just once a day, but continually all day long. If we are hungry - we eat, cold - we find heat, thirsty - we find drink, sleepy - we sleep, and on and on providing the things our flesh requires.

We provide for our souls daily - and not just once a day, but all day long. If we are bored - we find entertainment, ignorant - we gain knowledge, feeling creative - we seek the arts, and on and on providing the things our souls require.

Ah, but the spirit? This truest part of us (our spirits) many of us provide for only in bursts and spurts, not daily and hardly all day long. Sometimes our spirits are only fed for a couple of hours on Sunday morning.
And we wonder why we feel restless and weak!

Clothes will never clothe my spirit, an earthly mansion can never house it, physical food will never feed it, earthly pleasure will never give it joy.

My spirit?

'U can't touch this!'

Oblivious.... ain't it bliss?

Today's word is Oblivious. (ə-blĭv'ē-əs)
The American Heritage Dictionary defines the adjective oblivious as:

Lacking all memory; forgetful.
Lacking conscious awareness; unmindful.

Do you attend church? Do you read your Bible? Do you have an active prayer life? Or are you oblivious to the need for these things?

One of my pet peeves is driving behind a vehicle when the police are around. When people don't know the traffic laws - and they see the police - they start making up laws. They do 25mph in a 40mph zone, they stand at yield signs as if they were stop signs, they turn on their turn signals blocks before they turn.
They can't help it, they just don't know the law.

Many of us live our spiritual lives this same way. We don't know what God requires of us, so we make up some personal laws to keep Him happy. We justify ourselves by our own standards, and feel that what we think is right God will think is right.
We are oblivious to God's truth.

We live like folks dancing on the deck of the Titantic - oblivious to our fate. We don't need God, we don't need church, we don't need prayer.... until the ship begins to sink.

Ah, what a fool believes....
Don't ignore the call of Christ, don't be oblivious to the gift of the cross.
I Corinthians 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

Tenacious.... I won't let go.

Today's word is Tenacious. (tə-nā'shəs)
The American Heritage Dictionary defines the adjective tenacious as:

Holding or tending to hold persistently to something, such as a point of view.
Holding together firmly; cohesive
Clinging to another object or surface; adhesive
Tending to retain; retentive

'Hold fast', 'Don't give up', these are phrases that call for tenacity or a tenacious spirit. The tenacious person won't let anything move them away from the principles they hold.

In this day and age it's hard to find people who hold fast to the principles of God. Oh, people are tenacious alright - but they tend to hold fast to their point of view, not God's.
There is a great need for tenacious Christians today. 'Go with the flow' often leads to a quick trip over a cliff. We have to learn to stand for what we believe.
The writer of Hebrews put it this way:
Hebrews 10:23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)

Hold fast.

Today's word is Empathy. (ěm'pə-thē)
The American Heritage Dictionary defines the noun Empathy as:

Identification with and understanding of another's situation, feelings, and motives.
The attribution of one's own feelings to an object.

One of the key benefits of friendship is empathy. A true friend feels what you feel, and tries to understand what you are going through. But you don't even have to know a person to empathize with them. In fact, empathy gains great strength when it is applied to people we don't know.

To extend our love and concern to those that we know is usually not that hard, the stretch comes in extending those same feelings to those we don't know - even those we don't like....
Scripture calls on us to treat our enemies and friends the same - Jesus said:
Matthew 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Empathy requires us to "walk a mile" in the other person's shoes. It requires that we 'Do unto others, as we would have them do unto you'. In these modern times what a silly thought....
Yet, it is the way to a full life and one pleasing in God's sight.

Great changes occur when people have great concern. When we have little or no concern about what others are going through, we sit back and allow injustice to reign. I agree with the words of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. whom I'll paraphrase here:
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere!"
But it takes more than just a knowing of injustice to make us move, it takes a feeling of injustice - as if it were actually happening to us to really get us moving.

Set your heart today to empathize with those who are 'going through'. Help where you can, pray because we must, love because He loved us.

Apathy.... so who cares?

Today's word is APATHY.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines the noun Apathy as:

Lack of interest or concern, especially regarding matters of general importance or appeal; indifference.
Lack of emotion or feeling; impassiveness.

In this day and age it's very easy to fall into a state of apathy. So many things happen around us each day that we - sometimes without even knowing it - harden ourselves to our surroundings.
The news is full of tragedy, mayhem, and turmoil, and we tend to defend ourselves from all of this by not really taking things to heart.

When we take a "Be happy" approach to the realities of life, tyrants thrive. We often confuse feeling with worrying, they are not the same! While we should not "worry" we must feel. Wicked men reign when opposition is crushed and others just don't care, it's the perfect recipe for disaster.

We must not let ourselves become indifferent to the plight of others, Scripture enjoins us to share each other's joy and pain:
Romans 12:15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

Ready your heart today to share another's hurt. Ready yourself to enjoy another's good fortune.
Open your heart to life. Pray for the strength to feel!
