A White House Guest House is a 4-Star graded establishment with accommodation that comprises of a variety of rooms, units and apartments. The tranquil pool area includes an undercover entertainment area and braai facilities. The guest house has a large, tranquil garden that overlooks a beautiful park and mountain range. There are great hiking trails and cycling routs for young and old to enjoy. We are very central to all the nearby coastal towns of Boesmansriviermond, Kenton on Sea and Port Alfred, which are only 60 kilometres from us, that offer their beautiful beaches, top class restaurants, horse rides, bike rides and hiking trails and numerous entertainment options.  We are also a stones-throw away from the magnificent Settlers dam with its outstanding picnic and fishing spots as well as numerous game farms to visit and see the spectacular Big 5!

With so much to do and see in Grahamstown, you’d ideally need a few days to take it all in. However, if your time is short, you can make the most of the local attractions in a shorter time. Most places are within walking distance of each other allowing you to soak up the sights along the way. See some suggestions below:

• Hike to the Grey Dam then up to the Toposcope with absolutely spectacular views.  The hike is approximately 55kms and suitable for the whole family.
• Picnic at the Botanical Gardens (enter through Lucas Avenue). Pack a basket of food and picnic at “Bots” which is said to be the home to the ghost of Lady Juana Maria de los Dolores de Leon Smith, wife of Sir Harry Smith, who died in 1872.
• Explore High Street and enjoy the architectural gems to be found there. Stop at Church Square where you’ll find the Cathedral of St Michael and St George which has the tallest spire in the country.
• Get a 360 degree view of the city at the Observatory Museum (10 Bathurst Street). This 19th century building originally the home of Henry Carter Galpin, a watchmaker and jeweller, is now a museum that houses an observatory and the only working Victorian camera obscura in the southern hemisphere. It was here that the Eureka diamond was identified in 1867.
• There are lovely coffee shops all over our town that offer delicious refreshments to all.
• Albany museum complex (Somerset Street). The Natural Sciences Museum and the History Museum just down the road from the Old Provost are filled with extraordinary artefacts. The museums are open until 4:30pm and are closed on weekends and public holidays.
• The 1820 Settlers’ National Monument is also a magnificent piece of architecture to visit – A superbly equipped building that has been the centre of creative thought and activity.

We cater for functions held at A White House guest house including weddings,  stork parties and birthday parties for young and old. We also have an indoor and outdoor conference and seminar facilities available for medium size corporate groups. We offer safe on-premises parking, electric fencing, and an access control card system at the gate and front door.

• Painted the guest house roof a beautiful fresh green colour.
• Painted the pool outside area and the inside of the units a lovely fresh colour.
• We added flat screens televisions and reverse-cycle Air Conditioners in all the rooms.
• Lay upgraded Wi-Fi cables and new top of the range routers.
• Installed an electric fence around the whole property and had a top security access control card system installed at the gate and front door.
• Had a new, top quality roof installed at the pool entertainment area, as well as braai facilities for the use of the inside rooms.
• New personalized Amenity Range in all the rooms.

Grahamstown Festival!

We are very proud to have you stay at our magnificent guest house!

Today is the official first day of the Grahamstown Festival, and we are extremely excited! Thank you to all our wonderful guests for your loyal support. We appreciate our new guests booking with us and our old guests always coming back to visit us.

We are also looking forward to all future guests experiencing and enjoying the hospitality and pampering at our guest house!

We at A White House Guest House would just like to thank all our guests for staying with us during this years’ 2014 Scifest.

Here are just a few things that some of you maybe didn’t know about the Scifest.

Scifest Africa, South Africa’s National Science Festival, was established in 1996 to promote the public awareness, understanding and appreciation of science and mathematics, to facilitate the learning of these fields in an informal way, and to encourage the youth of South Africa to follow careers and become leaders in these fields.

Scifest celebrating the theme “Into the space!”

Schools from all over the Eastern Cape came to view the festival this year in our little town Grahamstown.

An expected 65,000 visitors attended the festival this year. Over 500 events that will explore spaces big and small, such as anatomy and the brain, astronomy, the atmosphere, architecture, biotechnology, the 50^th anniversary of the Canadian Space Agency, geographical regions, nanotechnology, psychology, underground and underwater exploration, space sciences, the SKA, the universe, and any other space you can think of, including good old parking spaces!

Thank you for all our wonderful guests that stayed with us over this period.  It was an absolute pleasure to meet you.  We look forward to seeing you all for another visit, or over the next bigger and better 2015 Scifest.
