Reseller Tips 26 • Bring Stale Inventory to a BST Shop

We’ve talked in the past about only sourcing what you love, as well as there being a lid for every pot. However, sometimes items will just not sell, at least not quickly. What to do in a situation like this?

Well you could run a sale, or just have patience and hope they sell one day, or donate them....or you could bring them to a consignment or buy-sell-trade shop. Buy-sell-trade (or BST) shops are such a great way to refresh your inventory. BSTs are places like Plato’s Closet where you can sell or get store credit for your stuff.

I recommend checking the website or social media accounts before heading to a BST, because some of them have very specific rules and can be quite picky with what they buy (understandably). But if your stuff is new-ish, trendy, clean, and underaged, you can probably get a few bucks or some store credit to buy new inventory. You might take a loss, but it could be worth it to get rid of things that aren’t doing well for you! A new start!

Reseller Tips 25 • Create and Maintain an Inventory System

I mentioned in the past that one of the first pieces of advice I give to new sellers/resellers is to buy a scale. Another important introductory tip is to create and maintain an inventory system.
It’s a terrible feeling when you sell something and quickly realize you don’t know where it is. Or if you sell similar items and can’t determine which one you sold and which you didn’t! To avoid that stress (or having to refund and disappoint your buyer) please start an inventory system ASAP.
You can create a very simple SKU system and a little Google sheet. It doesn’t need to be complicated (but totally can be if you’re a spreadsheet freak like me)! Simple: Item title or description, SKU number, location. Complex: price, listed date, sold date, quantity, profit, etc.
If you’re new to the game, start one now. If you’re old to the game, start one now. It may seem daunting, but will not take as much time as you think (I promise) and will save you time in the long run.
A detailed spreadsheet can help with analytics as well, but that’s a story for another time. Leave a comment if you need any help! 📈

Reseller Tips 24 • Thrift with a Friend

Thrifting by yourself is great. It gives you an opportunity to wander and get your steps in, score some awesome items, have alone time (even if you're in public), listen to audiobooks or podcasts, and shop without worrying about someone else. But thrifting with a friend is such a fun way to switch things up!
I like thrifting with my mom, my sister, my boyfriend, and my friends when they have time; and here’s why! You have a buddy with you to make jokes with or point out funny or interesting things you find. Sometimes when I thrift alone, I’ll text funny items to people, but it’s not the same as holding up a hilarious t-shirt and having a giggle.
It’s also great to have a second set of eyes. Your friend might spot something you missed!
I like taking my boyfriend with me because he’s a little more picky than I am, and he’ll be honest with me if I want to buy something and it’s a little ridiculous. He helps me keep my tab low. 😂

Reseller Tips 23 • Stop Scrolling

Of all the tips I’ve ever given, this one might be the one I struggle with the most. Here’s Lauren, having a super fun and productive morning. Here she is checking her phone while she eats lunch. Here she is three hours later, laying on the couch watching Instagram reels. Wait what how why??
Don’t get me wrong, we live in a world in which our phones are almost a necessity, and what a valuable resource! Everything at our fingertips!
But when you’re mindlessly scrolling, or doom scrolling, or simply wasting precious time on your phone, you need to put it down and walk away. And I know that’s easier said than done (especially during a pandemic) but it is doable.
Some tips:- Just put it down and walk away- Put it on airplane mode or do not disturb- Set up the built in feature of monitoring your time on social media or other apps- Download an app that shuts it down for you- Film yourself working as a time-lapse (if you're recording with it, you won't keep checking it)- Set a timer or reminder for allotted scrolling time, and when it goes off, ya done!

Reseller Tips 22 • Browse a Section You Normally Skip

Just like trying a new thrift shop is a fun change of pace, trying a different section of the thrift store is also a blast. I typically stick to the housewares and women’s clothing sections, but every so often I’ll have some extra time and wander to electronics, records, the front counter where they keep the “expensive” items, or even linens or kids!
You literally never know what you will find, especially if something is put in the wrong section accidentally. I’ve found awesome vintage t-shirts in the kids section so many times. And it feels like a silly little victory. 🏆
Next time you have a few minutes, wander around and see what you can find!

Reseller Tips 21 • Rest

When was the last time you really rested? If your answer isn't within the last week, I'm gonna need you to do it ASAP. You can't pour from an empty cup, friends!
And I'm talking about real rest, not scrolling your phone or watching Netflix on the couch.
I'm talking about lavender lotion slathered. blackout curtains closed, weighted blanket on, no phone or alarm nearby straight-up: RESTING!

Reseller Tips 20 • Take Advantage of USPS

An important piece of advice for new or seasoned sellers or resellers is to take advantage of the United States postal service. And I don't mean “take advantage" in the negative connotation, I mean that you should take full advantage of all the great supplies and services they provide.
First up: supplies! Did you know you can pick up in store, or order online, free priority and express mail shipping boxes and mailers? Check out the website or your local store.
Also don’t forget to schedule your pickups to save time going to the post office. And as always, remember to be kind to the workers. They deal with a lot!

Reseller Tips 19 • There's a Lid for Every Pot

Many many moons ago, when I was a teen, I worked at Marshall’s as a cashier. To make work a little more fun, I would play a game and guess what kind of people were shopping and what their plans were for the day, based strictly off of what they were buying. Still to this day I wonder what the cashier thinks about me based on my random items at Target or Home Depot. Like oh a plunger, duct tape, and succulents... hmmm.....?
The point of this little tale is the expression “there’s a lid for every pot”. Sometimes when I’m sourcing or going through old items to sell, I wonder “who on earth will want to buy this random sweater or trinket?” But I can almost guarantee no matter how seemingly random the item may be, someone somewhere will want it for some reason. Examples: vintage (unused) underwear, old iPod boxes, vintage scented powder with a cracked lid, accessories with names or initials embossed or embroidered on them, I could go on and on. Keep that in mind while sourcing!

Example: I try to post on Instagram once a day. I’ve realized lately that I always forget to post on the weekends. So I bum myself out about being “lazy” or whatever. Until this past weekend when it clicked—why don’t you prepare two posts for the weekend on Thursday or Friday? That way you can just post 'em without thinking too much about it and even if you’re busy?? Hello, so obvious right?

Today’s tip is quick, but it’s a good one! If you sell on Poshmark, Mercari, eBay, etc...please send offers to folks who like your items. Everyone likes a good deal, or at least thinking they’re getting a good deal. Many of my past sales on Poshmark have been from accepted offers. As long as you aren’t losing money or the deal, what’s the harm? The goal here is to get these items into happy new homes, not sit in a bin in your basement, right?
Okay, your homework is to go send some offers. Hope you make a sale! 🤑

Reseller Tips 16 • Source What You Love

Being a reseller is so cool. You’re saving items from going into a landfill, helping folks feel their best at lower prices, and making extra money while doing it. A particularly cool thing about reselling is most of the items you source have been used previously (except for deadstock/NWT items), which means you essentially have a second closet! That’s why I always recommend sourcing items you love!
Another reason I love sourcing things I love is just in case the item doesn’t sell, I can keep it, use it, and love it! Just don’t do this all the time, because then you’re just shopping, not sourcing. 😉
Sourcing what you love is great too, because you have more fun while doing it, and I think that really shows in your photos, listings, social media, and general attitude towards reselling.

Reseller Tips 15 • Get a Plant

This is perhaps a frivolous “tip” but I don’t care because I gosh dang love some houseplants. Plants are a perfectly simple and low cost way to brighten up your workspace, literally and figuratively! Even if you don’t think you have a green thumb, I promise there are a lot of indoor plant options which are terribly easy to take care of. I have a plant that I water once a week that’s been with me for about 5 years! Okay but you insist you won’t be able to keep a plant alive? Keep an eye out at your local thrift store for a faux plant or succulent. I see them all the time! Hope this tip brightens your workspace and your day! 🪴

Reseller Tips 14 • Try a New Thrift Store

Has your favorite local thrift store been a dud lately? It happens once in a while. Why not change things up and check out a new shop? In the past, I’ve skipped over small non-chain thrift stores, consignment shops, buy/sell/trade stores, church thrift stores, flea markets, yard sales, and estate sales...just to go to the same old Goodwill. Most of the time, different shops have at least one cool item to bring home, and it is simply just a fun change of pace from the same old thing. Be adventurous and try a new spot today. Who knows what you might find?

Many years ago at a blogging conference in Austin (Texas Style Council, anyone??), a speaker included the now-possibly-overused quote in her speech: Comparison is the thief of joy. How true is it though, babes?? In literally every aspect of your life you can face impostor syndrome or low self esteem because you see someone else’s life and wish yours was like it. This is something I’ve been working on for a while and I’m not perfect, maybe 70%, but it has saved me probably tens of thousands of dollars and almost as many hours of stress. Now I do believe a little comparison can be a good thing. It inspires you to create something new or to be better than you were yesterday. But if we spend our days wanting what others have, we will never appreciate what we do have. So maybe you see folks on social media posting about how many sales they made this weekend, or a trip they went on, and you feel crummy about it. I suggest you reframe the comparison in a way that inspires you!

How to Unsubscribe from Paper Mail + an email template!

After I started my monthly charity donations, I noticed I was getting a lot of paper mail from those charities and other organizations. I don't mind "junk mail" because I have a pretty good system of quickly recycling everything. However, I kept thinking that these organizations could better spend their money if they weren't sending me mail I was immediately throwing out. So I created a template to email and request to opt-out.

It's so easy. Either check the mail for an email address or simply google it. Then email the following:

Subject: Opt-out from Mailing List Request

Body:
Hello there,

I'm requesting to opt-out of paper mail deliveries for the following address:

FirstName LastName
Address
City, State Zip

Please let me know if you are able to do this, or please forward me to someone who can assist with this. Thank you so much!

Best,
Your Name

You should hear back from them within a few days, and stop receiving mail within a few weeks! :)

Reseller Tips 12 • Don't Try, Do!

To paraphrase the great Yoda: don’t try, do! I’m so guilty of saying “I’ll try to do this” or “I’ll try to get that done this week.” But what if I just said “I will get that done this week” or “I’m doing this!”
So often, we find ourselves procrastinating on things, perhaps because we think it will be harder than it is, or because we want something done perfectly. But what if we stopped trying and started doing? (Is that the tagline for Home Depot or something?)

Something I see SO often in blogs and on social media is how to have a work/life balance, particularly if you’re a small business owner. It’s the age old question. And one I was actually discussing with my mom today!
I told her that I wanted to work on cross-stitching and embroidery projects, but I feel like it’s a waste of time, unless I’m going to sell the finished products. Am I nuts??
I had a flashback to the many, many days spent as a kid simply making crafts and enjoying myself. Maybe we hung up the art, maybe we threw it away. Who knows? But I did it for no real reason, and I think I need to get back to that.

Here’s another simple tip for you on this lovely day: take a walk! Even if it’s 20 minutes, get outside and get some fresh air. I struggle with this sometimes; I feel like I can’t leave my apartment without a destination and for such a short amount of time. But I truly never regret it when I do. If you don’t have someone to walk with, bring headphones and listen to a podcast. It will clear your mind and reinvigorate you for the rest of the day. What are you still doing here? Go take a walk!

Hello friends! I’m here with you today to share a short but sweet tip. List out your goals.
Have you really thought about your goals, like why you’re doing what you’re doing? Where does your money go and where would you like it to go? Would you like to own a brick and mortar shop one day or are you reselling on the side to pay for a vacation or put money into a kid’s college fund? Where do you want to be, what do you want to have? Sit quietly with yourself and really think about it. Then list them out and figure out your plan of attack. It’s like a brain dump, but for your life instead of your day!
I suggest this because sometimes we get caught up in societal needs and wants and pressures, and we find ourselves doing things because we should and not because we want to. If you physically write out your goals and see them all in one place instead of sporadically floating around in your head, you may see things more clearly and can figure out what makes the most sense for you!

Reseller Tips 8 • Be Kind to the Postal Workers

We all know the feeling of rushing to the post office just to be slapped in the face with a long line or a seemingly rude employee and other frustrated customers, right? It’s stuffy in there and everyone is in a bad mood, and the lighting makes everything seem grey, and you can’t wait to send off your mail and get the heck out of there.
I’d suggest you switch your mindset when in these scenarios, but better yet: don’t get into these scenarios in the first place! Allow me to explain.
Whether for reselling or just for your personal life, I highly recommend getting a scale (read more about that here). You can print mailing labels yourself, either through your reselling site of choice, PayPal, or USPS online.
Then you can either schedule a pickup from USPS from your house, or drop it off at the Post Office without waiting on line!
Also, keep in mind that the people out delivering the mail or sitting behind that counter work HARD for us, and freaking especially hard this past year with the pandemic, election, and crazy holiday season. They are people like you and me, dealing with hundreds of customers per day. Sure mistakes happen, packages get lost, and people can be rude. But if you switch your mindset, go into the post office with a smile (behind your mask), play a game or text a friend while you wait, and you and the worker will be happier for it!

Reseller Tips 7 • Listen to a Podcast or Audiobook

I have to admit, I was late to the game with podcasts. When they first became “a thing,” I assumed they were just boring people talking about boring things like (at the time, what I considered to be boring) politics and finance. Then one day, someone suggested My Favorite Murder, which is an insanely popular true crime podcast. I listened to every available episode and immediately started filling up my queue with more true crime, historical, and comedy podcasts. Nowadays, barely a day goes by that I don’t listen to at least one episode of one podcast.
While there are soooo many different types of podcasts, I’ve found a lot of reseller related ones to be incredibly resourceful and insightful. Some of the time, the content isn’t necessarily new to me, but hearing it from a different voice can open my eyes to something else. I’ve also found “self help” or improvement type podcasts to be helpful as well, especially about focus, money, minimalism, and the ecosystem. Almost anything can be helpful when heard at the right time!
The same can be said for audiobooks as well. I sometimes have a hard time just sitting down and focusing on reading a physical book. But audiobooks and podcasts are a great way to gain insight and knowledge while doing other things, like washing dishes, taking a walk, commuting to work, shopping, pretty much anything!
