In private: Ethan Beavers give life to the Docteur Jones

I bet everybody knows Mister Jones, the guy whose name is the same as his old dog Indiana (which was the name of Georges Lucas’ dog by the way) The saga created by Georges Lucas and Steven Spielberg was born on a beach in Hawaii just after the release of Star Wars in theaters. A couple of years later the coolest archeologist was chasing tresures across the world.

The saga was such a success that we had 4 movies, tv series, books, games, action figures and of course comic books.

At the beginning Marvel comics was publishing the adventures of Indiana Jones and then Dark Horse got the rights (in 1990) and relaunched the adventures of Jones in 2008 with a brand new team Phillip Gelatt as the writer and Ethan Beavers as the artist. (The adventures of Indiana Jones are published by Dark Horse in the US and by Delcourt in France. The second issue was released in September 2009 in Uncle Sam country and at the beginning of February 2010 in France.)

I want to thank the talented Ethan Beavers who agreed to answer some of my questions.

Lex: First and usual question, how did you came to the comic book industry?

Ethan Beavers: I started looking for work in comics around 2003. I had a strong feeling that I should give comics a go, so I went to the San Diego Comic-Con and showed my work around. To my surprise, I got a couple jobs right away. At first it was pretty slow going, but I kept at it, and eventually had enough work going to quit my day job.

Lex: How do you usually work with a script writer?

Ethan Beavers: It depends on the job. Sometimes I work closely with a writer, sometimes I have no contact with the writer.

Lex: Can you tell me a little bit more about your work with Warner Bros? On which projects have you worked?

Ethan Beavers: I only worked on one show at WB, and only one episode. I storyboarded part of the Justice League unlimited episode called “Patriot Act”.

Lex: You’ve done pencils for volume 7 and 10 of Star Wars: Clone Wars adventures along with other artist, what have was your role on it? Are you going to work on other Star Wars issues?

Ethan Beavers: I was a penciler/inker for those books, and I worked on Vol.8 as well. For the present, Dark Horse has other artists for their current Star Wars books.

Lex: Indiana Jones (published by Delcourt in France) is another collaboration with Dark Horse comics, can you tell me more about your story with Dark Horse?

Ethan Beavers: For that one, They asked me to try out for the book- I did, and I got approved. I tried to bring a little Sunday comic strip feel to the work. mostly I was influenced by Frank Robbins “Johnny Hazard“.

Lex: Have you tried to work on animated series?

Ethan Beavers: Yeah I have, but I haven’t been as successful getting work in animation as I have in comics and children’s books.

Lex: What’s next for you?

Ethan Beavers: Right now I’m illustrating a children’s book Called “NERDS” as well as doing Ben 10 and Samurai Jack short

stories for the “Cartoon Network Action Pack” book at DC.

The things 3D will bring to us… part 1

Des films en 3D, des univers en 3D, des boîtes de céréales avec du 3D dessus, etc. On entre clairement dans l’ère de la 3D, même si cette technologie existe depuis plusieurs années.

Les films en 3D c’est franchement pas une nouveauté, on est d’accord. Tout le monde ou presque connait les salles IMAX et les attractions utilisant la 3D. Je me rappelle encore de mes voyages au parc Futuroscope il y a au moins 10 ans, où cette techno me paraissait fantastique.

Aujourd’hui la 3D se résume pas uniquement au port de lunettes mais, à tout un tas d’utilisations plus ou moins utiles pour l’homme. On la retrouve dans les jeux vidéos, le cinéma, la conception d’objets, la science etc.

Alors, je ne vais pas m’étendre sur toutes les utilisations que l’on peut faire de la 3D sinon ça pourrait prendre dix plombes.
La 3D fait son cinéma:

Alors, je vais volontairement faire l’impasse sur le film Avatar, car on en entend suffisamment parler un peu partout. Le film est très beau visuellement, c’est un exemple dans l’utilisation de la 3D pour le cinéma et ça va donner lieu à bien des changements mais, je reste assez déçu par le scénario.

J’ai trouvé un bel article sur le cinéma en 3D, réalisé par Cédric Muffat de DVDrama en 10 pages, mais malheureusement il date un peu. Je vous invite malgré tout à le consulter. A l’époque on disait que le frein à la 3D dans les cinémas (hors IMAX) était, en partie du moins, dû à la qualité des rendus 3D et à l’importance des scènes en reliefs. Souvent les films utilisés le relief dans quelques scènes seulement et le tout servait plus le département marketing que les spectateurs. Hors maintenant les technologies que nous avons-nous permettent d’avoir des rendus de haute qualité.

Par exemple le logiciel Massive, utilisé sur la trilogie du seigneur des anneaux (et accessoirement sur Avatar) permet de simuler des foules virtuelles. Ce logiciel permet de donner une intéligence artificielle à chaque personnage.

Sur la scène du gouffre de Helm dans “Le seigneur des anneaux: Les deux tours”, les troupes des Rohirrim font face à des milliers d’Uruk-hai venus les trucider. Cette scène à fait appel au logiciel massive.

Et là voilà une démo de fonctionnement du logiciel Massive. Dans cette exemple on génère une foule de personne dans une salle de sport de combat.

Du coup vu les résultats de films comme Spykids 3, Non je déconne celui là est naze ! Mais plutôt de film comme Avatar et tout les Pixar. Alors, non seulement on va avoir plus de films réalisés en 3D mais, aussi à regarder en 3D.

Dans le genre lourd et sans doute très pourri : Piranha 3D, SpyKids 4 (comment peut-on faire un 4 à un truc pareil!!)

Kate Beckinsale: Underworld and after…

Almost everyone has heard about Underworld. A movie of Vampires fighting against Werewolf for centuries. With the success of the first movie, the studio decide to create two movies one with the story beginning just after the first one and the other one telling the story before those two. The movies that followed the original were not really as good as the first one. And another time it shows that most of the sequel are usually not as good as the original one.

At least in the second opus, the beautiful Kate Beckinsale was always there in her beautiful latex dress molding and just for that, it was worth to watch it. Besides, I think at first that’s why I rented the DVD. But the third … Even the beautiful Kate was gone. That’s not to say that Rhona Mitra is not sexy but far from good as Kate is…

Underworld another movie, again?

Well, a rumor which has started to travel on the web on a possible return of Kate Beckinsale in her role for a fourth movie. Although for now the rumors are instead reported that she could play a less important role than in the previous ones. However the fact of seeing her returning to the franchise is quite nice. As the blog io9 said, this is not too hard to believe, since her husband Len Wiseman will be the director of this fourth movie.

The weirdest rumors are that this story could take place in space and in 3D (according to Variety). I can imagine a fight between Vampires vs. Lycans in 3D but in space… It could go a little too far and not necessarily for the best.

Imagine a chase in weightlessness? lycan doing a three meters leap with an helmet on his head? Well ok I’m exaggerating a bit

The Vampires in space, was already done in the past and I let you this read article with some very nice examples of that.

Makma Studio has a brand new website online!! And guess who is behind that? Yes that’s me ! I took the job on this website just after a huge server crash. This crash wasn’t all bad because the Studio has decided to launch a brand new website with a new design. In order to be closer to everybody we decided to install a blog platform so this way it would be easier to post article and interact with people on every topic.

But wait who the hell is Makma?

MAKMA studio was founded by Stephan BOSCHAT and Edmond TOURRIOL in 2001. MAKMA is specialized in visual arts and especially in comics. MAKMA’S artists can play a part in any stage of the creation of a comic book: writing, pencilling, inking, lettering, coloring. MAKMA gathers more than forty artists from all around the world with different styles: European “bande dessinée”, American style comics, mangas. MAKMA’s newest projects include Zeitnot and Last Seduxion (euromanga), Mix-Man and Urban Rivals (super-hero / action comics).

I’m working with Edmond Tourriol in order to get this website on track, now it’s about content and there’s a lot to talk about, believe me. I hope you will enjoy this new website as much as I do.

The Coins: comic book’s first page

Luc Besson presents: The minimoys in augmented reality

Vendredi dernier chez Dassault Systèmes, nous avons eu la visite du maître Luc Besson, afin de nous présenter son nouveau film, à savoir “Arthur et les minimoys: La vengeance de Maltazar”. Évidemment j’étais parmi les premiers à m’inscrire pour cette séance exceptionnelle.

Arrivé devant l’amphithéâtre avec mon boss Jacques, on se munit de lunettes 3D et on se place au premier rang pour pouvoir être le plus prêt possible de Luc Besson. Alors, évidemment je regarde autour de moi impatient de voir Besson arrivé et nous présenter le film. Arrive alors Medhi Tayoubi, le directeur stratégie et marketing interactif, il nous indique que Besson viendras après la projection du film et que les lunettes 3D qu’on nous a distribué ne serviront pas pour le film, mais pour une séance spéciale après le film.

La Vengeance de Maltazar:

La projection du film se passe bien, comme le premier, “Arthur et les minimoys” est un film destiné au jeune public et par là même, passe un peu moins chez certaines personnes. Cependant, si on se place du point de vue de la cible, le film est plutôt bien ficelé. Simple bémol sur la vitesse à laquelle Arthur et son grand-père devine le plan de Maltazar. Sans aucunes explications ils arrivent à tout comprendre trop fort . Un peu déçu de voir la princesse indépendante si peu active dans le film (simplement à attendre son prince charmant).

Comme le dit si bien Besson, la fin est frustrante et nous laisse un peu sur notre faim. Normal le film est divisé en deux pour avoir une durée qui s’adapte à son public.

Encore une fois c’est un film pour enfant…

Maltazar en live chez Dassault Systèmes:

Medhi revient sur scènes et nous présente un petit “Making of” du spectacle “La féérie des eaux” qui a eu lieu à Paris au Grand Rex entre le 18 novembre et le 1er Décembre. Le spectacle précédé chaque scéance du film “Arthur et les minimoys”. De grands panneaux permettront aux équipes de Dassault Systèmes et d’Europa Corp d’animer les personnages d’Arthur en direct pendant le spectacle.

Ensuite viens le moment de rencontrer Maltazar, “himself”. Sur l’écran géant de l’amphithéâtre apparait en 3D Maltazar, controlé par un ingénieur équipé d’une jolie combinaison. Cela permettant à Medhi de discuter avec le grand méchant du film en direct. Cette même représentation avait d’ailleurs été faite lors de l’avant première du film devant une salle remplies d’enfants. Luc Besson, alors présent, avait même fait venir plusieurs enfants sur la scène pour les faire interagir avec l’ennemie d’Arthur.

Rencontre avec Luc Besson:

La présentation terminé, il était temps de rencontrer Luc Besson en personne. Impréssionné et stressé, j’était comme un gamin en voyant descendre un des réalisateurs pour qui j’ai une grande admiration (Spielberg étant mon maître )

Sur scènes Besson nous raconte la rencontre avec Dassault Systèmes, fait quelques remerciements et nous invite à lui poser des questions.

- Pourquoi Arthur et les minimoys n’est-il pas diffusé en 3D avec des lunettes?

Luc Besson: “Les modélisations et les scènes sont tellement bien faites qu’on a presque l’impression en regardant le film que c’est diffusé en 3D et cela aurait fait un peu trop du coup. Ensuite le public étant les enfants, il est difficile de leurs demandé de garder sur le nez des lunettes en cartons vertes et rouges pendant toute la durée du film.”

Et je n’ai pu résister à lui poser une question qui me brulé les lèvres depuis quelques années:

- J’avais vu une interview, dans laquelle vous disiez que vous ne feriez que 10 films. Est-ce vrai?

Luc Besson: “J’ai dit ça moi? Oui j’ai dit ça. Mais j’ai changé d’avis A l’époque je venais de finir deux films, qui était le 5ème élément et Jeanne D’arc et je n’avais eu que 4 jours de congé. J’étais fatigué. Ensuite j’ai écrit un scénario “Adèle Blanc sec” qui était destiné à être fait en BD, mais je me suis dit que j’aimerais le faire en film.”

Et là c’était top. Luc Besson n’allait donc pas s’arrêter là. D’autres DVD vont pouvoir venir compléter la collection Besson qui se trouve dans mes étagères. La fatigue et le raz le bol lui avait fait dire qu’il ferait 10 films et terminée, mais un artiste peut-il s’arrêter réellement?

Ensuite une photo et la scéance était terminé. Luc Besson et repartit et moi j’ai vécu un superbe moment. Luc Besson va continuer à faire du cinéma et moi je vais continuer à me dire qu’un jour j’en ferais autant

Dollhouse, what’s next? a comics?

Well after my last post about Buffy the Vampire slayer let’s talk a little about “Dollhouse” the TV show of Joss Whedon cancelled by the fox after only 2 seasons.

With a good casting (Eliza Dushku was back with Joss Whedon for the 3rd time) and an exciting plot, we first thought that this tv show will be good. But everything is gone bad for this show as soon as the first episode. The ratings will never be enought and the fox finnally canceled the show.

Season 2 premiere, had decreased by -41% (2.6 million viewers) compared to season 1 premiere(4.7 million beaten by “Supernanny” and its 6.1 million)

So everybody ask Joss whedon is he was going to adapt the show as a comic book and continue the adventure like he did for buffy. The first answer was “No”! But at San Diego he said “I know how we can do it as a comic.” So everything is open for this strory and Dark Horse could end up with a Dollhouse series, but Joss Whedon will have to work on the script in fit into the comic book format.

To continue the Dollhouse’s adventure it seems that Fox have mounted a web game alternate reality game (ARG). The game will begin with a new website for the mysterious Rossum corporation, the corporation, which is at the origin of the “Dollhouses” and the technology to create the “Actives”.

In any case all of this proves that, Joss Whedon is never short of imagination and he always finds to develop his projects.
