In 2005, Taj Hotels joined forces with New York City’s legendary Pierre Hotel to set a new standard in luxury hospitality. Together, Taj and the Pierre have created a remarkable combination of Old New York charm and contemporary panache. One of the defining elements of this equation is an exquisite collection of contemporary Indian art that grace the Pierre’s first floor.

Donated from the private collection of the Tata group, this must-see collection hosts many of the leading names in contemporary Indian art, including Prafulla Dahanukar, Akbar Padamsee, and Ganesh Haloi, to name but a few. Head of Sale at Sotheby’s Southeast Asian Modern and Contemporary Art Priyanka Mathew guided Whitewall on an in-depth tour of the nuanced collection recently. The contemporary movement in India began in 1945, following the Republic’s independence from the British Empire. While many pieces in the collection echo the influence of western movements, particularly cubism, the work of all represented artists reflect their desire to express the heart of Indian culture.

The collection also hosts three works by Maqbol Fida Husain. Husain’s career began in the 1940s as a billboard painter. He is now one of India’s most well known modern artists and the “grandfather” of contemporary art movement. Pieces such as Untold Story, Between the Spider and the Lamp, and Sitarare exemplary of his broad, quick strokes and ability to capture both tremendous energy and emotion.

This collection can be viewed during monthly art tours guided by Ms. Mathew (advance reservation required) or on self-guided tours that will begin in October.

India's most famous modern artist M.F. Husain died on Thursday in London, media reports said citing family members.Husain, who was aged 95 and known as the "Picasso of India", died at the Royal Brompton hospital in London.

"India didn't have the privilege of seeing him in his last moments, that is a huge loss for this country," Jitish Kallat, one of India's leading young artists, told NDTV news.

"As an artist several decades younger than him, I feel like a part of the canopy has blown off," he said. "He evolved the public notion of what it meant to be an artist in this country."

Maqbool Fida Husain, a Muslim formerly based in Mumbai, was accused by Hindu hardliners of insulting their faith for portraying goddesses in the nude in some of his paintings - a depiction that he said symbolised purity.Following threats by a radical Hindu group and thousands of legal cases filed against him for offending "Hindu sentiment," he moved to Qatar in 2006 and accepted Qatari citizenship in 2010.He said he was content to be a non-resident Indian and that he had no qualms about losing his nationality, as India does not allow dual citizenship."What's citizenship? It's just a piece of paper," he said. "Wherever I find love I will accept it."Ninety-nine percent of Indian people loved me and they still love me. I'm an Indian-origin painter. I will remain so to my last breath," he said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has condoled the death of M F Husain. In his condolence message, Singh termed Husain's demise as a “national loss”.

Life-time achievements
From the year 1990 till 2011, MF Husain had been the highest paid painter in India.
The luminary was honored with several prestigious awards including the Padma Shree in 1955, the Padma Bhushan in 1973 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1991.
Besides his paintings, Husain will also be remembered for his movies like ‘Gaja Gamini’ that stars his muse Madhuri Dixit and ‘Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities’ featuring Tabu.

His six-decade career began in the late 1940s when he joined the Progressive Artists' Group founded by Francis Newton Souza. These group of young artists aimed to disengage from the idyllic nationalist traditions of the Bengal school of art to imbue in their works a more avant-garde approach.

He is famously known for his Shwetambari exhibition at the Jehangir Art Gallery in Mumbai which consisted of two halls masked with barren white cloth, coils of which embraced the floor with torn newspapers.

Billed as one of the most expensive artists in the subcontinent and in Asia, Husain leaves behind six children and a fleet of 13 swanky sports cars that included a trademark red Ferrari and the latest model of a Bugatti that he acquired year before last on his birthday. And of course a vast legacy of art - unparalleled.He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1973 and was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1986. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1991. He was also honoured with the prestigious Raja Ravi Varma award by the government of Kerala.

The passing away of Maqbool Fida Husain, India's leading international face in contemporary 20th century art, marks the end of a golden era in India's tryst with new-age art in an Indian idiom.

Although Picasso is still the world’s best generator of million-dollar auction results, collectors are apparently not that hungry for his works as to push the bidding to any price. Indeed, while the offer of top-quality Picasso works continues to flow, buyers remain discerning.
This was clearly visible at Sotheby's 3 May sale in New York: of the 32 lots estimated at $1m or more, only 17 actually got beyond that threshold and only 4 of the 10 works by Pablo PICASSO presented that evening went beyond their low estimates.
The star work of the sale, Picasso’s Femmes lisant (deux personnages), only just reached $19m against a low estimate of $25m. Before the sale, encouraged by the London result in February of £22.5m for La lecture ($36.2m, double its estimate), optimists were predicting a better result for Femme lisant than the $35m high estimate!

And the “Picasso effect” also underperformed for three other major works in the Sotheby's catalogue: Couple à la guitare sold for $8.5m vs. a low estimate of $10m; then Femme nue assise contre une draperie and Vue d'une fenêtre were bought in against low estimates of $2.5m and $5m respectively.
In total, 8 of the 10 Picasso works presented that evening sold for $51.6m, accounting for nearly a third of the sale’s total revenue, but substantially below the auctioneer’s expectations of between $60m and $85m from the ten works. Last year, at the same New York sale, Christie's generated $127m from the Picasso signature.

The Impressionist & Modern Art sale at Sotheby’s on 3 May presented 59 prestige works generating a final total of $149m. At the last market peak (May 2008), the same sale generated $208m from just 48 adjudications.
This year’s revenue total was relatively good when compared to the $52m from the same sale in 2009, but was still substantially lower than the announced figures: expecting a total of between $158m and $231m from the evening, Sotheby's did not even reach its lower total... an outcome that has not occurred since 2009, at the bottom of the market dip.

The “Monet effect” expected in London
Another major disappointment from the May sales was Claude MONET, the second pillar - along with Picasso – of these annual prestige sales. Sellers and auctioneers alike appear to have substantially over-estimated the market's appetite for the leading French Impressionist’s work… The result: Monet’s superb 1914-1917 Iris mauves, actually failed to sell. Christie's presented the work with a $15-20m estimate having sold the same piece for $3.5m in 1997. The 2011 estimate implied a +320% value accretion for this painting that had already produced the best result for an Iris painting by Monet. His Les Peupliers received a more enthusiastic reception, tripling the price it sold for in November 2000 ($6.4m, Christie's NY), although the $20m it generated this year was only equivalent to the auctioneer’s low estimate.
The pulse of the market is expected to accelerate in June with the Christie's London sale of part of the stock of works belonging to the gallery of the famous art dealer Ernst Beyeler who died in February 2010. The stock contains, amongst other works, a Nymphéas painting by Monet. Remember that Monet’s Le bassin aux nymphéas (1919) fetched $71m in June 2008 at Christie's in London.

Mirza Mohammed Ali Baig is one of the few artists in the country who remains sole custodian of miniature-art tradition

Intricate work:Mirza Mohd. Ali Baig displaying a miniature painting done by him. HYDERABAD: The unassuming countenance of Mirza Mohammed Ali Baig belies the 450-odd years of remarkable legacy he is bequeathed to. He is one of the few artists in the country, and probably the only one of his stature in the city, who remains to be the sole custodian of the miniature-art tradition that flourished in the city during the Mughal period.
Also well-versed in Persian, Kangda, Ajanta, Deccani, Chugtai and Nirmal art traditions, he was visited and commended by none other than the famous Nobel prize winning novelist Orhan Pamuk as ‘one of the master miniature artists in India'.
A peek inside his modest dwelling at Yakutpura will reveal amazing assortment of art works, some of which took months of toil for completion.
“I began painting at the age of seven, inspired by my uncle Mirza Akbar Ali Baig. Later, I joined the Nirmal Industry Training Centre to learn the trade. However, unable to tolerate the commercial atmosphere prevailing there, I quit,” Mr. Baig recollects.
Later, he fine-tuned his skills under the renowned artist Iqbal Hussain. Working from home since, he created thousands of masterpieces which adorned homes and establishments around the world.
He has won many honours, and his Micro Painting of Mughal Emperor Shahjahan, Queen Mumtaz Mahal and Taj Mahal, all four inches in size, won him an award in the Third International Competition of the World Federation of Miniaturists in 2004. Fifty-five long years of engagement with microscopic details might have left him failing in sight, but not in spirit.
He still works continuously for six to seven hours. He makes his own brushes, thin enough to work the minute portions.
“When I was much younger, I would sit from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. on a painting.
It would take unwavering attention of two to twelve months to finish a single painting. Nowadays, nobody has the patience,” he laments.
Under ‘Guru Shishya Parampara', an initiative by the Union Ministry of Textiles, he trained 24 students in two batches of 12 and six months respectively, which, according to him, “is not enough to learn how to draw an eye properly”.

A portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to mark the Diamond Jubilee of her coronation is his latest work.

High-End Art Poses Possibility for Investors

BOSTON (TheStreet) -- Despite the economic volatility of the past couple of years, the art market continues to set records.

Back in November, hedge-fund billionaire Steven Cohen bought Andy Warhol's 1962 painting Coca-Cola for $35.4 million at auction. Another Warhol, at a seperate auction lasy year, Men in Her Life, a black-and-white silkscreen depicting Liz Taylor and Debbie Reynolds, sold for more than $63 million. Overall, the modern pop artist is poised to join the ranks of Monet and Picasso in terms of appraisals and sales.

Given the massive inflows and outflows of art collectors, is artwork ready to take the leap from hobby to commodity, from private equity to mutual funds? A small but growing movement is seeking the securitization of the high-end market, following the lead of Russia and India.

Working against such a development is an unregulated marketplace that is often more Wild West than Wall Street. The art world can be a shady place, full of backroom deals, insider trades, subjective pricing, theft and forgery. Whim, rather than economics, guides much of business dealings.

Sergey Skaterschikov, however, is among those who thinks art can thrive as a formalized asset class.

Skaterschikov is founder of Skate's Art Market Research, which provides investment research on the world's most valuable art and art industry companies. Skate's Top 5000 is a database and index of the world's 5,000 most valuable artworks based on publicly reported auction prices.

He says the auction season this fall confirmed that the art market is "clearly emerging as a strong alternative investment market" and that "the masterpieces segment alone in Skate's Top 5000 absorbed about $700 million in net capital inflows for the three-month period against the backdrop of currency fluctuations, European Union woes and overall global economic uncertainty."

The total volume of trading in Skate's Top 5000 art stood at $3.63 billion as last year drew to a close, roughly $6.1 billion per work of art.

At a forum last month in Miami, Skaterschikov was among those discussing whether there will soon be a new trend of institutional investment capital allocated to art as an alternative asset class.
