First of all, I’ve never seen such wonderful Nepali movie before. And another thing, Loot – a film by Nischal Basnet is the first Nepali movie to create lots of positive buzz in Social Media.

Social Media is not just meant for Hollywood & Bollywood but Social Media is playing great role for the success of Nepali movie Loot. If there is no social media, or let’s say if Loot has not used Social Media, particularly YouTube & Facebook, Loot has not become such hit then, because we know standard of Nepali movie.

As compared to a PC, the iPad has almost every feature that is used for the day to day work. Now the biggest question arises that could an apple iPad completely replace an office computer? The answer is critical though. The iPad might have many features to replace the PC but it could also have some shortcomings as compared to a PC. Office computers can be used for various purposes such as development, testing, writing, designing etc. Some of the common functions executed by an office laptop and the iPad are listed below:

If the above features and usability are taken into account, one can say that the iPad is capable of replacing the office computer without any hesitation. The iPad can never replace the PC if software development, photo editing, graphic designing, gaming is taken to consideration.

But the iPad is easy to use and mobility is the biggest advantage of the iPad.

Apple iPad offers the basic HTML editors not the rich text editors provided by a PC. So, it becomes tough for the users to format their text as per their wish.

The iPad also lacks the flash support in it which is a huge problem for the users who work on flash supported files frequently.

It is a hell of task to upload images while blogging in an iPad. It consumes a lot of time to upload images and to publish the text that passes many levels to be published.

Even for note taking purpose apps need to be installed in it. It is quite a good task to install an app for every function you want to work with.

The final verdict

Of course, the iPad is a useful product for professionals now, yet it is not fully equipped to replace the office computers or PCs fully as some of the office works cannot be performed by the iPad. It can complement the office computers in an effective way though.

Nepalphotography.org, an organization run by young Nepali photographers launched the website www.npfoto.com on Thursday, 29 September 2011. Npfoto.com is an online photography gallery showcasing works of talented Nepali photographers.

Currently launched as a "beta" version, Npfoto.com allows invite-only members who can submit photos to the gallery. Once a submission is received, in-house panel of judges will assess the photo and decide whether to approve or decline the photo. "We are trying to feature only the best quality works in this website. Our slogan is 'awesome is what awesome does', because we intend to attract only the most 'awesome' photographs of Nepali photographers," said Gaurav Dhwaj Khadka, the founder of Nepalphotography.org and member of panel of judges in Npfoto.com.

"The Npfoto.com website features a gallery, an online photo submission page, a photo archive and social tools like liking and commenting that also makes the website an engaging social experience," says Swapnil Acharya, the developer of the website, "Rather than just having bland displays, we would like to see people engage in knowledgeable discussions in the website. This website isn't just about showcasing remarkable photos, but also a place from where new talents can learn and be inspired."

The developers of the website have claimed Npfoto.com to be of cutting-edge quality that showcases only the finest works. "There are already so many photography-related organizations and groups in Nepal so it is necessary for Npfoto.com to excel both quality-wise and credibility-wise," said developer Acharya. "Currently, we are focused towards releasing the final version of the website," said Khadka, "Once we have a full-fledged website online, we will be organizing photo contests, discussions and workshops as well. Another exciting highlight of Npfoto.com will be an annual photography award, where winners will be picked from photos showcased in the website throughout the year."

Nepalphotography.org has been actively involved in the field of documentary and fine-art photography, filmmaking and photo exhibition since 2006. It has organized 2 nation-wide photo exhibitions, and is currently producing five short films as well.

Nepal Engineers’ Association (NEA) website (neanepal.org.np) has been hacked and defaced by hackers. Hacker seems to be fond of Rajesh Hamal jokes. They have placed Rajesh Hamal Jokes on NEA website.

NEA website has been defaced by hackers while engineers were busy in election. The election for new executive committee for Nepal Engineer’s Association is going to held on 16^th of September 2011. Site was last updated on 1st August 2011.

Hacker also uploaded a hacking tutorial in NEA website. They have shared a tutorial on how to make free calls worldwide using Skype.

Nepal Engineers' Association (NEA), a non-profit professional organization, was founded by a group of young enthusiastic engineers in 1968 with a noble aim of developing engineering professionals to promote the development process by application of engineering sciences and technologies and at the same time increasing the interaction, goodwill and cooperation among engineers in Nepal and protect their professional rights.

Google Server in Nepal

Search engine giant Google Inc. in association with Nepal Telecom has installed its cache server in Nepal, reports Nagarik Daily.

According to report, Google's cache server has been installed in Nepal Telecom office in Jawalakhel. “With the installation of Google cached server in Nepal now users can use Google services faster than before”, said NTC official. “After the installation of Google server, Internet bandwidth uses has been decreased”, added another official.

Since cache server is a dedicated network server that saves Web pages and other Internet content locally. Users request will be handled by Google cache server that was installed in Nepal Telecom Office. Now Nepali internet users can use Google Services such as Gmail, YouTube, Google Plus, Google Maps and several other Google products faster than before. A cache server both speeds up access to data and reduces demand on bandwidth.

According to report, the service is in testing phase and Google's engineer are here in Nepal to train NTC technicians and engineers.

Thanks to Google and NTC. Hope now I can stream YouTube HD videos and can sign in to Gmail within a second.

Ncell Connect Datacard at Rs. 1

The first Nepali private mobile operator Ncell has been offering “Ncell Connect Datacard” at one rupee.

In this offer, “Costumers can get Ncell datacard at 1.13 rupees (including VAT). For this you need to buy Ncell SIM at 99 rupees and 1000 MB data package, which costs you 789.87 rupees. Overall you will get 1000 MB data with Ncell Datacard at 890 rupees (including vat).”

Offer is available from Ncell Centre – New Baneshwor, New Road, Durbar Marg and Pulchowk till September 12. The data card for this offer is available in Kathmandu only but it works in all 3G coverage areas of Nepal.

According to Ncell, “The service enables subscribers to avail of a high speed internet connection up to 3.6 mbps with a USB data card. Data usage depends on the data size. In 1000 MB data package,you will be charged Rs.0.70/MB (excluding tax).”

Ncell, the first private sector mobile operator had launched Nepal’s fastest internet service —‘Ncell Connect’ one year ago on September 2010.

NTA Preparing to Auction WiMax Spectrum

The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) is preparing to invite requests for proposals (RFPs) to auction spectrum for WiMax technology known as wireless broadband access. The technology allows service operators to provide voice and high speed internet service even in remote areas.

The telecom regulator has assigned 30 MHz of spectrum to Nepal Telecom (NT) without competition based on the decision of the of Radio Frequency Policy Determination Committee under the Ministry of Information and Communications. The NTA is presently preparing to assign spectrum to one private sector telecom operator and one internet service provider (ISP) company through an auction.

The government has fixed the base price of Rs 800,000 per 5 MHz for the auction of WiMax spectrum. Three months ago, the committee had decided to assign spectrum to two telecom operators including NT and to an internet service provider to provide WiMax technology-based services. Being a state-owned company, NT was provided spectrum without an auction. However, NT will be charged the fee quoted by the telecom operator obtaining spectrum through the auction.

“We are planning to issue RFPs within a month,” said Bhesh Raj Kanel, chairman of the NTA. He added that the telecom operator obtaining spectrum through the auction would be able to provide both data and voice services while the ISP would provide data service only.

The NTA has allocated 2.3 GHz and 3.3 GHz band for offering WiMax tech-based voice and data services. According to the provision set by the committee, the annual spectrum fee for WiMax spectrum will be Rs 300,000 per MHz for an internet service provider. Similarly, the charge for the telecom operator and NT has been set at Rs 7 million per MHz per year. NT has speeded up work on WiMax by calling global tenders with a focus on broadband service for rural areas. It has set a target to bring WiMax services to all the village development committees (VDC) in the country by the end of 2012. “Since we have already been assigned the needed spectrum, we are working to make available 200,000 lines for the rural sector,” said Surendra Prasad Thike, deputy managing director and spokesperson of NT. He added that the company had been making preparations to award contracts to eligible vendors.

Immediately after the government’s decision to allocate spectrum for WiMax services, NT had invited tenders to establish wireless broadband access using WiMax in 2.30-2.40 GHz band to every VDC and municipality in Nepal with a minimum data rate of 256 kbps for downlink and 256 kbps for uplink. NT will award the contract for the West and East Network within a week having a capacity of a total of 100,000 subscribers.

NT aims to provide a broadband network solution through this project which is envisaged to be capable of providing quad-play services of voice, data, video and mobility. The vendor wining the contract for the West Network will build a network covering 1,923 VDCs and 24 municipalities in Gandaki, Lumbini, Dhaulagiri, Rapti, Bheri, Karnali, Seti and Mahakali zones. Similarly, the network to be built in the East section will cover 2,092 VDCs and 34 municipalities in Bagmati, Narayani, Janakpur, Sagarmatha, Koshi and Mechi zones, according to NT.

Metropolitan Traffic police has joined Facebook. Metropolitan Traffic Police Facebook page will be used to disseminate information about traffic, as well as to interact with Public.

I’m not sure but probably, this is the first Nepali governmental organization to use Social Network which aims to serve people via Facebook. If Metropolitan Traffic Police effectively uses this platform then it will be the must easiest and effective way to disseminate information about traffic.

Traffic Police can post their update on Facebook page by informing this area is blocked, heavy traffic etc, where as other public can also post update about their location. The Website of popular English Daily The Himalayan Times was hacked yesterday (26, June 2011) evening by DarkExp0ser, though the site was already up now.An anonymous called DarkExp0ser (possibly member of Pakistani Cyber Army PakCyberArmy.net and HackAll.net) claims that they have hacked the website of Most Read English Daily of Nepal, The Himalayan Times. At site’s homepage hacker says, site was hacked since it was hosted on Indian Server. And hacker also suggests an admin to secure their site.

At THT homepage,dialog box appears saying “Hacked by DarkExp0ser! I’m terrible sorry but it’s your own fault. SECURE YOUR SERVER! ~DarkExp0ser~” . Hackers have left their message with background music on THT Homepage. Hacker message reads like this:

This site has been hacked by DarkExp0ser!
Admin, you should secure your server, cause your security sucks!
Fix that problem, or maybe another hacker will come and destroy your whole Server.
You got owned by DarkExp0ser!

“This union is a win-win for both parties,” he said, adding that the acquisition will also provide a worldwide market for Endeavor Human Resources and e-governance expertise, besides providing career opportunities for over 250 domestic IT professionals in next two years.

“With the deal, SPI is strengthening its foothold in Asian market and accelerating its global growth,” chief executive of SPI Sid Mookerji said.

“The alliance will enable us to bring together a convergence of operations and technology,” he said, adding that the company will continue to stay committed to its global customers worldwide.

“Kathmandu has an immense talent pool and SPI believes that this city can become the next sourcing location for world class knowledge workers,” he added.

Established in 1994 as an external service provider of global IT solutions focusing on the retail vertical, SPI is a technology services and financial solutions organisation specialising in retail and dedicated to substantially maximising profits for global clients.

Similarly, WorldLink Technologies, established in 2001, is a software solutions provider with extensive experience in consulting, development and implementation of enterprise applications across government, banking and financial services and other industries.

After an announcement made by US President Obama today, Osama Bin Laden ruled in an Internet.

Today President Obama announced that Osama Bin Laden had been killed. Obama added, the United States was in possession of Laden body. President said that he has been killed in firefight following US raid in Abbottabad, Pakistan near Islamabad.

After his announcement, within an hour news reports about the Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden, spread all around the web.

This news has been spreading all over the internet, from social networking site Facebook, Twitter to Blogs and Websites. TV Channels have done live of President’s announcement.

Broadlink Changed 3GB Plan’s Rate

Broadlink has changed it’s special package rate of Rs. 300 with 3GB to Rs.499.

In an announcement company said, with effect from 15th April 2011 they are increasing the price of the 3GB plan to Rs.499 with 1 month validity.

Following is the company statement

We had launched special package of Rs. 300 with 3GB download/upload and validity with 1 month. This was a special package for CAN Infotech 2011 only , however , we extended it for 2 months to facilitate our customers .

With effect from 15^th April 2011 we are increasing the price of the 3GB plan to Rs. 499* in order to maintain the service quality and support to our customers.

This plan is very beneficial for customers who have limited use of internet and are not heavy users of internet . Customers who have heavy internet usage can refer to our other unlimited packages .

I’ve been using 3GB plan with Rs. 300 though I used to go to Indreni Height, Sanepa (Broadlink’s Headquarter) every time to buy Internet Cards. With the change in their plan, I feel It’s not justifiable to pay Rs. 500 just for 3GB. And even more I don’t think We will get 3GB card in other outlets.

Rs. 300 and 3GB was quite justifiable, but now they have increased their price from 300 to 500, and its too much. UTL can be better option for me (?) because UTL offers unlimited download/upload in Rs. 500 per month. While Broadlink offers 128kbps unlimited internet for 15 days with Rs. 500 or limited 3GB internet for 1 month.

And fact is that, I just need internet to check Email, Facebook, Twitter, Blogs. And I’m ready to pay Rs. 300 for 3GB plan but not Rs. 500.

One Hour Internet Outage in Nepal

Internet service was disrupted on 10th April in Nepal by Internet Service Providers’ Association of Nepal (ISPAN). ISPAN is an umbrella organization of Internet Service Providers (ISP) in Nepal.

ISPAN says as a part of protest program internet service has been disrupted for an hour (1pm – 2pm) on 10th April. According to ISPAN, “the ISPs are being held liable for the misuse of the Internet service by their customers. Even though the police have not built even a single successful legal case against ISPs, they are misusing their privilege to hold anyone in custody in the course of their investigation and targeting ISPs. The threat of unwarranted police action has created an environment of fear among ISPs and is hampering our ability to provide our services and conduct business.”

According to ISPAN, “In last few months the directors and staff of ISPs are being held in custody and taken to court when a customer of a respective ISP has been identified to be operating illegal call bypass. ISPAN condemns such act of misuse of authority by concerned authorities. This has adversely affected the daily operation of ISPs and has created fearful environment over job security and investment to expand the services”.

ISPAN disrupted internet service by saying, they need a safe environment to do business. ISPAN demanded, ‘They want a safe environment free from the fear of unwarranted police action to conduct their business and provide the services that they have been licensed to provide’. ISPAN had submitted a memorandum to the regulator – Nepal Telecommunications Authority on 8th April about this protest.

Is it Legal/Ethical to shutdown Internet Service?

Though they are facing problem from police and government bodies, but does it mean that internet service should be disrupted? I don’t think its ethical to shutdown internet services.

And one of the ISP, Broadlink says, “We highly regret the inconvenience caused to our valued customers due to our protest programs. However, we firmly believe that you will also support us in our endeavor to make Internet, a healthy service and help us to operate in peaceful environment”.

So, Do I support them or switch to any other alternatives? But one thing is that, ISPAN issue should be addressed immediately by Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA). And at the same time, ISP should become responsible to their loyal customer.

Further More why NTA / ‘Nepal Government’ is not addressing this issue of ISPAN? ISPAN have submitted their memorandum on 8th but till today NTA is not addressing issue of ISAPN, WHY? It seems ISPAN’s demands are legal, as they say whoever (individual/customer) have done call bypassing should be punished by authority not an ISP. Though theirs demand sounds legal but they shouldn't had disrupted internet services. It’s pathetic idea to disrupt an Internet Service in this age. ISPAN demonstrated corporate irresponsibility which cannot be accepted.

At last, I would like to condemn the ‘ISPAN internet outage’ and hope this issue will get high priority in NTA and solved immediately.

ISPAN has called off their protest program after NTA has formed a committee to investigate about this VOIP issue.

Facebook Users From Nepal [INFOGRAPHIC]

Do you know ? Only about 2.2 percentage of whole population of Nepal have access to Internet. And among them 0.85 Million people uses Facebook.

Social Networking site Facebook has about 0.85 Million users from Nepal. Data shows among0.85 Million users, 0.59 Million users are Male whereas around 0.26 Million users are Female. Data says it seems hard to find single Nepali lady in Facebook. :P

Infograph shows that 58% users from Nepal are single whereas 17% is in relationship and 26% are Married. Majority of Facebook users from Nepal are Male and 41% Male single users are interested in Female. But interesting only few numbers of Female single users are interested to opposite sex (Male). Data says only 4% of Female single users are interested in Male. May be this is because of structure of society.

But if we refer to age group, then data shows amazing result about Nepali Facebook Users. More number of girls/female are interested towards opposite sex in their teenage. But after 30, interest of Female decreases to almost zero.

At 17, The interest level for female peaks for the first time. (Female : 17% & Male : 5%)

At 20, The interest level of female decreases rapidly while that of male remains steady. This is the turning point of trend and since females were at the end of their teenage (Female : 14% & Male : 10% )

At 25, While the interest of female is decreasing rapidly, the interest level in male starts to decrease only after the age of 25, but gradually. (Female : 4% & Male : 8%)

At 30, By the age of 30 years, the interest level in male is about 2%, but the interest level in female is almost zero.

March 21st, today Twitter is celebrating it’s 5th birthday.

Twitter was founded by Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone and Evan Williams 5 years ago.

Micro Blogging site Twitter has 200 millions users world wide and operates more than 140 million tweets a day. About 25 billions tweets were recorded last year.

Five years ago, on March 21, 2006 Creator, Co-founder and Chairman of Twitter Jack tweeted his first tweet by saying ‘just setting up my twttr’ .

At that time Biz Stone had designed logo, Evan had registered domain called “twttr.com” and Jack was up to programming things. Biz had suggested to use ‘twttr.com’ but Jack was not happy since twttr doesn't have any vowels, in a tweet Jack explained.

According to Jack, “@Noah came up with the name & managed, while @florian & Jack programmed twitter on Ruby on Rails”. On Micro blogging site twitter Jack says, “Originally I was going to program twttr in Python, C, & Ocaml. But, I got @florian who was a core contributor to Ruby on Rails”

Twitter things (mostly programming) was planned to finish in 14 days, but their excitement drove them to non-stop work and they have moved first. They started on 14th March and finished on 19th March.

This was the first logo of Twitter designed by Biz.

Twitter is a social networking and micro blogging site that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. According to Oxford English Dictionary Twitter is "a short inconsequential burst of information, chirps from birds." Battle of Browsers : Firefox 4 vs Chrome 10 vs and IE 9

On 14th March, Microsoft released the next generation web browser IE 9, an updated version of Internet Explorer.

With the release of IE 9 by Microsoft, browsers battle have already started in an Internet. Few days ago, Mozilla released Firefox 4.0 RC while Google Chrome recently updated to version 10.0 and rolled out a new Settings interface.All three major browsers dubbed themselves as the fastest browser of planet and also claimed they have improved and advanced ‘JavaScript Engine’ and supports HTML5. And yes of course, all three major web browsers supports the latest web standards and provide speedy page rendering.But it is quite confusing to determine the best browsers among them.

We used to make a joke on Internet Explorer (IE) saying, “IE is the number one browser to download number one browsers Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox” . But with the release of IE 9, experts says scenario might changed, because IE 9 seems promising browser and supports the latest web standards. Tech Pundit around the web are gossiping, “IE 9 is a promising web browsers, that Microsoft has ever made”.

People who are sticking with Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, Will switch back to Internet Explorer? Definitely Not, people will not switch back to IE9 who are using Chrome or Firefox though IE is claimed as fastest browser. In a test performed by various firms suggests that with added GPU acceleration (support for Hardware acceleration) IE 9 is faster than others. Arstechnica reported, “Due to added GPU acceleration, Internet Explorer 9 feels very fast : Even scripting-heavy Web applications render quickly, animate smoothly, and perform well.” However Firefox 4.0 and Chrome 11.0 are also going to add this GPU acceleration in their final release, So does this matter to us ? No, Not at all. It’s just for record saying, which browser have used GPU first ? Final Version of Firefox 4.0 is coming on March 22.

But Gigaom suggested, Google Chrome is ahead of browsers. Gigaom says, in Acid3 test Chrome marks 100 out of 100. Not only in Acid3 test but, IE9 lags behind Chrome, Firefox,Opera and Safari in the HTML5 test, Kraken JavaScript benchmark. While Arstechnica says, on the SunSpider Benchmark, IE9 feels very fast. One thing is that, IE9 follow web standards though it lack some standards. I must say, IE 9 has got a new design with one click access to favorite sites. They have redesigned their tab to improve browsing experience and as Google Chrome IE9 comes with combined address and search bar. And another great thing is that, Now we can download other browsers much more easily because IE Download Manager keeps a running list of the files which are being downloaded from the Internet. No doubt now, IE9 looks clean and simple and has also widen the screen area since Microsoft trimmed down their browser UIs. It is said that, with default settings, IE9 is now the most space-efficient browser on the world.

However IE9 is better among IE but not among browsers, and we must appreciate an effort of Microsoft. Microsoft is trying to show that, they are also capable of making next generation browser. And Microsoft is trying to follow web standards, it’s a good news.

Mozilla Firefox and Google Supports thousands of add-ons and extensions respectively, but I’ve not heard IE9 provides such add-ons and extensions. And browsers without extension and add-ons are useless, at least for me. Also, sadly IE is only for Windows and can be used only on Vista and Windows 7. IE9 cannot be used on XP either. But Firefox and Chrome can be used in any OS.

I’m using Chrome as major browser in Windows and Firefox as major browser in Ubuntu as Google Chrome do not render Unicode properly in Ubuntu. Google Chrome and Firefox are the best browsers for me. Data shows,most people are still using IE but majority of population is moving towards Chrome and Firefox leaving IE behind. Even our blog stats shows, majority of blog viewers are using Firefox and Chrome though majority are using Windows as their Operating System.

Firefox 4.0 RC Available for Download #Firefox

A long awaited next generation web browser Firefox 4.0 Release Candidate is available for Download.

Firefox 4.0 moved out of beta and Mozilla Foundation released RC for users. Firefox 4.0 beta users will be upgraded automatically to RC and then RC users will be automatically upgraded to final release of Firefox 4.0.

Firefox 4.0 supports HTML 5 and it includes new and improvement JavaScript Engine called JägerMonkey. It’s better than Firefox 3 and comes with many features and improvement such as new tab browsing experience and more screen space. Mozilla says, “From faster start up times and graphics rendering to improved page load speed, you'll notice the difference instantly.”

According to Mozilla, they have tested Firefox 4.0 RC on a Dell Optiplex 760 (Intel Core2 Duo), Windows 7 Professional and found above results (shown on above picture).

Facebook Fan Pages Got New Layout

After changing the design & layout of the Profile pages few months back, now Facebook has changed design & layout of its Facebook Fan Pages and has also added some new features on Fan Pages.

In a special announcement, Facebook announced that “Facebook pages are getting an updated layout and several new features to help you engage with your fans.”

Following are the added new features of Facebook Fan Page.

Notifications when fans interact with your page or posts

A place to showcase photos along the top of your page

A news feed for your page

The ability to Like and post on other pages as your page

Now one can use their Facebook Fan Page, to interact with other page as well. If user want to use Facebook as Fan Page then After upgrading, user need to click “Account” option and can toggle between user page and Fan Page accordingly.

Facebook is giving option to upgrade fan pages earlier, Fan page Admin can switch to new layout and can use new features. And by default, All pages will automatically be upgraded on March 10 by Facebook.
