Bloated Egos in Bollywood

The latest example of bloated egos in Bollywood is provided by the verbal duel between Aamr Khan, Idiot No. 1 in Three Idiots and the pseudo-secular intellectual Javed Akhtar.

It is true that both of them have reached a certain stature in the film industry and have contributed their bit to the movie world. They also have a lot to contribute still. It is also true that both of them have their share of admirers and detractors alike.

But it does not mean that those who try to poke their noses in everything are the only ones who can contribute.

The argument arose from a discussion on who contributed more to the success of a movie song. The occasion was a meeting to sort out worldly royalty issues between producers and lyric writers.

Aaamir Khan, just as he had tried to intervene in the Three Idiots dispute with Chetan Bhagat, tried to intervene saying that lyric writers did not have much to contribute to the impact of a song. While he tried to downplay the role of the lyricists and claimed that only the star actor makes a contribution to the success of a song, Javed Akhtar took umbrage and a heated argument followed.

If truth be told, film songs become popular more by the sense of hearing than by the sense of sight. Not everyone goes to see the movie whose song becomes popular. Many songs become popular even before the movie is released everywhere and many a song played on screen by mediocre stars or of miserably failed movies become popular. It is the combined effort of the lyricist and the music director that creates the maximum impact of the song. Of course, Aamir Khan is totally wrong in giving more credit to the actors. Even Javed must know also that without good music composition, a superlative lyric will also remain effective only with a small number of people.

So where both are wrong, it is not proper to take sides on the issue about which the debate became ugly. The objective of both sides primarily revolved around money rather than a debate purely about merits.

But considering the actions of Aamir Khan thereafter where he sent in his resignation from a certain committe about Copyrights, it does seem that the actor is going overboard. His ego certainly seems to be bloating rather much as can be seen from his letter to the Hon'ble Minister for HRD Kapil Sibal.

Aamir wrote that though he felt he had a lot to contribute, “I cannot make any meaningful contribution in this atmosphere. Aggression of this type leaves me feeling very disillusioned and sad and I am unable to function.”

Well, the Minister or the Government can be hardly concerned in his personal arguments with Javed Akhtar and the offense taken by him and it would be inadvisable for the Minister to even attempt to keep him on the Committee. If he wants to resign, let him resign. He is not the only one who feels he has a lot to contribute, there will be a hundred others more brainy than him even within the industry.

Let such bloated egos be deflated as soon as possible.

Three Idiots in One

Aamir, the all-knowing Bollywood hero has done it again. (see previous)

At first, he got some cheap publicity by traveling all over the country in different attires to attract attention. The film 3 Idiots for sure, has done exceedingly well and Aamir may be giving a pat on his own back thinking that it was his gimmick that resulted in the Box Office success.

By all accounts, it is a movie well made and all those involved should get due credit. It is another thing that true to typical Bollywood style, the producer, director and actor have ignored to give due credit to Chetan Bhagat, whose book Five Point Someone provided the base for the movie.

Understandably, the author of the book is aggrieved that his name appears at the end of the title credits almost as an “also ran”. Now that the movie has done well even beyond the wildest expectations of the makers, they are upset that Bhagat is making noises in public.

Both Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra took great pains to tell the world that the story is written by someone else working for them. They also got flustered and angry amidst persistent questions raised by the media.

Unfortunately, the truth cannot be hidden by angry shouts and assertions. As early as February 2008, a Bollywood blog had reported that the Hirani was going to make a movie adaptation of the book with Aamir in lead. See here. Even when the movie was released, many reviewers clearly mentioned that the entire movie was largely based on the book. See for example here:

And yet, the movie makers insist that the movie is developed by their own genius. Aamir, the other genius who has acted in the movie, suggested during the media meet that Chagat was raising objections to gain publicity. Well, the idiot should know that whatever he (Aamir) did was all for cheap publicity, only for having acted as one of the three idiots in the movie. So, the person based on whose book the movie is made has every right to speak out which is far from saying that he is doing it for publicity now that the movie is such a success.

It is difficult to tell Aamir, the irrepressible, to shut up and keep playing his movie roles which he is good at. Self-styled geniuses are like that.

And as for plagiarism, Bollywood is known for it for so long. Making clones and copies is an obsession with Bollywood –it is truly the Ulhasnagar in movie world.

Even reputed movie makers like Mahesh Bhatt (another self styled genius) are not known to be averse to plagiarism. The song Ya Ali from his movie Gangster was a straight copy from an Arabic song by Guitara which he must have known. Listen

There are many sequences in his other movies which were straight copies of Hollywood movies which has already bee reported widely. Even Aamir starrer Rang De Basanti is said to have been based on All my Sons and Jesus of Montreal.

So Bollywood has always been shameless and brazen when it comes to copying whether movie themes or music. It is not going to make any difference to them if people like Bhagat keep believing in Gandhi and Truth. The irony of it all is that this controversy is actually further helping the movie even if it will help Bhagat sell some more copies of his book to people curious enough to make a comparison between the movie and the book.

Idiotic Promotion

Our friend (not a great friend of some bollywood colleagues) Aamir Khan is up to his antics again.

This time, in order to promote his film THREE IDIOTS (he being one of them - why did he not perform all the three idiots himself? One wonders.) he is visitng various places in India with a dress change tactic.

The tactic is obviously not intended to hide his identity or his idiosyncracy at all. In fact, he is going out of his way to make sure that media is made aware of all his moves and his visits to various places is given good coverage.

No wonder, his arch adversary Khan Shahrukh is not amused and is passing snide remarks against Khan Aamir. Other rivals may just be waiting for the right opportunity to give him a jab here or a jab there.

The media, like the fools they sometimes appear to be, eagerly gobble up such opportunities and give him free publicity, just to fill up their own time slots. One suspects that media must be charging him normal advertisement rates.

Judging by the manner in which our public also rushes to see such movies simply based on idiotic publicity stunts, Aamir Khan and the likes of him laugh all the way to the bank.

Let us hope that the public will become wiser and more mature, unlike those who indulge in such stunts only to fool the people.

As everyone in Bollywood wants to say his or her two bits worth on issues which they do not understand, two of the Bollywood characters have praised Rahul who for all intents and purposes is considered by most people to be rather dim but propped up by some good professional media management by his party.

Some time back, Shatrughan Sinha, belonging to another political party BJP, sang praises of Rahul. In doing so, he deeply embarrassed the party that made him a Member of Parliament.

Khamosh raho!

This is what happens when people with exaggerated notions of their own importance try to outreach themselves.

A few days back, Jaya Prada, who was lucky enough to be elected under the SP banner due to the efforts of Amar Singh, although no one in the party thinks much of her, also said that she likes Rahul and showed confidendce in him. It is likely that she might have said these words as proxy for Amar Singh because the latter is desperate to get into the good books of Congress Party inspite of being give a hard kicks earlier several times. Incidentally, Jaya Prada is the same lady who visited a flood sricken area in a boat recently and when the boat started rocking, was seen weeping and saying "hoooo hooooo hoooo hoooo" by millions on the TV.

It is clearly evident that at least Bollywood film stars do not have what it takes to become good politicians...Amitabh, Jaya Bachhan, Govinda, and now these two.

Why cannot they find some other worthwhile pursuits and make way for genuine persons to become members who can make genuine contribution as members of parliament?

Then again, having seen the caliber of other MPs, who are equally bad, let these two continue to make fools of themselves and their parties.

Big Bachha

It is very difficult to understand what Amitabh, regarded as a superstar once upon a time, is trying to prove.

He has been appearing more and more on TV advertisements promoting all sorts of useless products. It is not clear whether his goal in life at this stage is to earn fame or money by appearing in such advertisements.

Now the news comes that he is going to act as the "Boss" in a stupid reality show on the TV called Big Boss which tries to present cheap excitement to the viewers by showing imbecile fights amongst the participants, some foul speech, some titillation etc. etc.

Perhaps, Amitabh needs to do all this for money. On the other hand, it is more than likely that he is entering his second childhood at the same time trying to appear very mature. Another possibility that cannot be ruled out is that seeing his son and daughter-in-law getting so much popularity, and his wife also being in politics, he does not want to be left behind and fade into ignominy and wants to remain in the public eye in any way possible even resorting to cheap gimmicks. Even his writings in his Blog increasingly look like meaningless ramblings of a teen keen to show writing abilities. Perhaps, he should take now seriously to twitter.

More and more, he is being his true self and behaving like a real Big B (Big Bachha).

As far as the movie industry is concerned, there are some like Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand who would like to live a dignified life in their twilight years whereas some like Amitabh, rather than doing something useful for the society, indulge in frivolities, pursuing activities that do not matter. It is true that men considered to be role models are after all merely men of straw.

One thing is sure as far as Amitabh, the angry young man of yesteryears is concerned:

He is neither young nor does his anger, if there is any left, make any difference to the public in this day and age which belongs to Akshaykumar, Shahrukh, Aamir, Salman, Saif and other Khans.

Bollywood Bakwas

Aamir Khan put his foot in his mouth some time back with his Bakwas on Narmada.

After a long time, there is now a competition of sorts amongst Bollywood ladies to indulge in such Bakwas.

First, it was Shabana Azmi, the self-styled secular face amongst Muslims, but in reality, a thinly disguised fanatic. She made an absolutely absurd statement that Muslims cannot get a place to stay in Mumbai. This was one of the most irresponsible statements made by her. Earlier too, she has been taking up various causes and stirring up trouble. But this statement took the cake. No one, whether Muslim or not, in right mind can believe such incredible utterances which have no substance. The statement appers either thoughtless or just to appease her own folk.

The second insensitive statement was made by the wife of Amitabh Bachchan that she would speak in Hindi since she was talking about a Hindi film. This statement was deliberately designed to poke fun of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and Shiv Sena who have been quite justifiably trying to espouse the cause of their own language in their own state.

It is high time that the husbands of both these ladies ask them to shut up and concentrate on being good housewives.

If they cannot live without making fools of themselves, they should then go to places where they might feel themselves more welcome than in Mumbai, which is the city that has made them for what they are - false goddesses.

Such statements are designed to create disharmony amongst the peaceful people of Mumbai.

MY FREEDOM OF SPEECH

Mahesh Bhatt, the fountainhead of wisdom in the film industry, filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking to force theatre owners to show a movie in their theatres, claiming that the fundamental rights of expression of the movie maker were violated by not showing the movie in theatres.

The petition was one in which Mahesh Bhatt did not have a locus standi and even if he had, the argument to force theatre owners to show a movie was without any merit. It met the fate it was expected to and was summarily dismissed at the preliminary hearing stage itself. Mercifully, he did not ask the Court in the petition to compel even the public to go and watch the movie.

The absurdity of the grounds of the petition must have been known even to Mahesh Bhatt, intelligent as he appears to be, and definitely to his lawyers. Yet, he went ahead with the same. It is apparent that it was deliberately done merely to project himself as a saviour of Bollywood in times of need and in the bargain earn some more publicity. It was hardly meant to rescue Aamir Khan from the consequences of his actions in the name of exercising his freedom of speech.

The Supreme Court, in its brief order that consigned the Petition to the bin, had this to say:

“We are not inclined to entertain this petition in view of the relief sought for.
The writ petition is dismissed. However, we may add that if any exhibitor wants to screen the film and seeks protection of the police official, it goes without saying that the same shall be provided in accordance with law.”

Is the order not one of straightforward, summary dismissal? One would think so. The second part of the order is simply stating the position as it exists -even without the Petition -that if any exhibitor seeks protection of the police, it shall be granted in accordance with law.

But what does Aamir think of the order? He says:

“I welcome the Supreme Court stand on the release of Fanaa, asking the authorities to provide security to theatres wanting to screen the film.”

If Aamir interprets and projects the remarks of the Court as a “stand” taken by the Court on the release of his film, it only displays his own poor understanding or an unsuccessful attempt to fool the people.

Showing his grandiose self-importance, he goes on to put the entire blame on others, including the film fraternity.

With a view to make people believe that the opposition to his actions is not from the people of Gujarat but only from a small group, he says: “It is now upto the BJP Youth Wing workers to decide whether or not they want to respect the Supreme Court, freedom of speech and democracy.” Once again, he falsely implies that the Supreme Court has come out in his favour. Freedom of speech and democracy are the other two phrases he has learnt to use liberally to defend his own actions.

During his interview, he once again tried to unnecessarily drag the Supreme Court by saying : " If people want an apology from me, why do not they ask for apology also from the Supreme Court as I am saying the same thing that Supreme Court says." Also a couple of months back, sounding as important as Supreme Court, he had said in a show of conceit: " Supreme Court will be watching the progress (of rehabilitation) during the three months. Even I will also be observing the progress myself."

This time round he also tried to use some emotional stuff on the people of Gujarat, thus: “I would only like to appeal to the people of Gujarat not to be fooled by all the propaganda against me. They only have to look me in the eyes to realize the kind of love I have in my heart for Gujarat and its people.” Perhaps, his pretentious self does not let him realize that the people have been hurt by his actions, not by the look in his eyes. If he has even the slightest of concerns - forget love - he should try to show a willingness to understand the minds of the people.

To cap it all, he does not even spare his colleagues in the industry who made the mistake of speaking in his favour. According to a news report, he seemed disappointed at the kind of support he had received from the industry. "It is upto the film industry to decide what its future course of action is. The whole nation is watching to see whether it takes a concrete step, or whether it takes a weak step or nothing at all," he added, putting the entire burden of bailing him out on the film industry while he merrily continues to sing the tune of having the freedom to express his thoughts as he likes.

Bollywood, it seems, is damned either way – whether it supports him or does not support him.

It is still not late for the industry to realize the hazards of blindly supporting people having exaggerated ideas about their own importance as well as their own views on various issues and find itself in the wrong for doing so. Bollywood needs to reflect carefully on extending support in future to anyone in their industry who wants to exercise his or her own freedom of speech and expression without bearing the responsibility for the same. After all, Aamir or others who exercise their freedoms rather freely from time to time do not consult the industry before doing so.

This particulat instance is not an issue of freedom of expression in films, as for example, smoking scenes in movies, where the entire industry has a strong case against a government action (read this article). In this incident, Aamir, by his individual actions, has clearly offended the sentiments of a large number of people. It is the adamancy of one person refusing to appreciate the legitimate objections (see previous article) of millions of others that is preventing a solution to the impasse. Incidentally, it would be appropriate to cite the instance that is very much alive, relating to the candidature of industrialist Rahul Bajaj for Rajya Sabha. A major political party is opposed to his candidature ostensibly because he has been vociferous in expressing his views against the government's proposed policy on reservations. He has simply been exercising his freedom of speech and expression and yet, he has managed to offend a political party that swears by democratic traditions. Aamir, on the other hand, has succeeded in offending a large section of the public.

Having said all this, it is nontheless clear that Bollywood has always been weak in its ability to restrain its own flock. It is doubtful if it can make people like Aamir see reason and make amends for actions that not only result in great ill-will but also economic harm for the industry.

AAMIR ISSUE and freedom of expression

a non-bollywood, non-political view

TV channels and newspapers have extensively carried interviews by Aamir Khan on the Narmada issue in which he a) defended his right to freedom of expression and b) claimed that he had only talked of redressing the plight of the displaced persons, like any other person concerned for the well-being of adivasis, farmers and poor people would do. He also said that he was only reiterating what the Supreme Court said in this regard.

It is true that he, like any other person in a democracy, has the freedom of speech and expression. It is also true that he appeared to be talking only about rehabilitation.

However, the point of view of the people of Gujarat that, perhaps, could not be clearly presented, needs to be understood in context. There is a long background and history leading to the present feelings of people in Gujarat.

The Narmada project was initiated nearly 45 years back in 1961. For various reasons related to government decision making and other obstructions, the project has till today not seen the light of day.

The project has a tremendous significance for Gujarat and the people see it as the key to the development, prosperity and growth of their agriculture as well as industry, besides being a source of water for their thirsty millions.
The delay in implementation has had a unimaginable adverse impact on not only the costs of the project, which have escalated tremendously, but also delays in getting its benefits, which also carry a massive cost in terms of delayed development.
The delays have been compounded by various agitations carried on over the years and still being carried on by Narmada Bachao Andolan.
NBA, whose actions have established its identity as an anti-large development, anti-dam movement, has been agitating since 1986 and has been instrumental in causing serious impediments in the implementation of the project at every stage.

Unfortunately, apparently without having any background of the project and NBA’s past role in delays on the project, Aamir Khan chose to join and speak from the NBA platform, effectively identifying himself with NBA.
The fasts and agitation spearheaded by a group of professional protestors of NBA ostensibly to support rehabilitation, were undertaken to put pressure on the government as well as even the Supreme Court, which was already seized of the matter FOR THE MAIN PURPOSE OF STOPPING WORK ON THE DAM not for rehabilitation. Aamir would have logically ascertained cause of the NBA agitation and known that the purpose of their agitation at that time was to stop construction.
Aamir chose to join the agitation at that point of time. He would certainly be aware that his celebrity status would provide a strong impetus to the NBA banner. Therefore, even if he himself might not have said anything about stopping the dam, the effect is the same as if he had done so. Even being charitable and assuming that he was unaware of the objectives of NBA, he is responsible for the consequences of joining without being aware.
The project is at a critical stage and with NBA’s relentless efforts to STOP the construction on the project; further delays would simply be disastrous for the country and Gujarat in particular. The project is designed to benefit four states in which over one fourth of the country's population lives.
Considering the extremely sensitive and delicate stage of the matter, it is but natural for the people to fear that his actions on the back of NBA platform would further compound and lend strength to NBA’s efforts, leading to the project being scuttled.
Therefore, his actions are justifiably seen as completely against the interests of Narmada project even if he did not utter a word about stopping the dam. His ill-timed comments from the platform of NBA, which is recognized by all those who have followed the developments over the years as being fundamentally anti-project, have naturally invited the anger that he is facing now. Even his comments on rehabilitation were apparently based on the NBA’s contentions, which have been seriously disputed in the Supreme Court.
In his defense, Aamir Khan also vainly dragged Supreme Court into the issue by saying that he was only repeating what Supreme Court was saying. It should be remembered that whatever was said as regards rehabilitation by the Supreme Court while deciding the NBA case was logical and it could hardly have said that it should not be done. It is not quite correct to hide behind the Supreme Court while defending what he said during the NBA agitation.
It is futile to claim freedom to exercise the right of speech without responsibility and without adequate knowledge, from a platform whose AVOWED PURPOSE FOR THE AGITATION AND FAST WAS TO STOP WORK ON RAISING THE HEIGHT OF THE DAM.

In the above background, it is naïve or deliberately misleading of Aamir Khan to keep claiming that he has not said anything against the dam but only spoke and will continue to speak about rehabilitation.

Every citizen, including Aamir, has a right to freely express his or her opinion and views on any matter, including the Narmada project.

At the same time, all those who are offended by HIS actions, according to their own perspective, have a similar freedom and right to express their unhappiness in speech or actions against his actions, as long as they do this within the confines of the law. This right is all the more stronger for the millions whose lifelines could be threatened by further delays in the project. It is not material whether the views are expressed by a hundred or a thousand or a million voices.

Some of those who support Aamir Khan have also expressed a view that those opposing his actions are guilty of ‘intolerance’ not fit in a democracy. This is an unfortunate view. It is to be remembered that the freedoms of speech and expression are essentially subjective matters. The essence of the freedom is to allow an individual to express a view in the way he or she sees it. Similarly, the definitions of ‘tolerance’ and ‘intolerance’ are also a matter of subjectivity and depend upon the facts and circumstances of each situation and the individual. An arbitrary level of tolerance and at what stage tolerance turns to intolerance cannot be dictated by others, although they may express their views of what they consider intolerance. Tolerance and intolerance as far as expression of views is concerned, cannot be defined in isolation; it has to have a relation to the situation and context. History, including that of India is replete with examples of events that would be within the limits of tolerance in normal circumstances but which resulted in strong reactions. Even in day-to-day life, innocuous actions sometimes result in unexpected responses, which ordinarily would be regarded as intolerant reactions.

It is interesting to examine this aspect in the present situation. On the one hand, are people who have been suffering for decades due to the delays in completion of a development work that is a national project – a project that is likely to bring succor to millions by way of supply of drinking and irrigation water and power. These are the people who have been waiting patiently for all these years for the project to come to fruition but which some people are hell-bent to sabotage one way or the other. Every delay that occurs takes these people farther away from their dreams and denies them the basic needs like water. Every delay also results in massive cost increases, which affect the entire country and the tax - payers. For any person of reasonable understanding of what a development project of such magnitude means for the country and for the people, it should be clear where the larger good lies. On the other hand, there are people who are agitated and angry and feel aggrieved because a film is not shown in one part of the country. These are the people who cry foul and claim that those who oppose Aamir are ‘intolerant’. Only those who have a sense of balance and maturity can discriminate and understand as to whose reactions display intolerance.

The subjective nature of the definition of ‘intolerance’ can be shown by an illustration: When Aamir made his remarks at the time of the NBA agitation, a certain film maker opposed these strongly, questioning Aamir’s right to speak in this regard. When Aamir, apparently trying to find ways to show how equally concerned he was for other causes, offered to speak for the cause of displaced Kashmiri pundits, the filmmaker suddenly found it necessary to come out strongly to support Aamir the very next day.

If because of the controversy created by Aamir, the producer and others connected with Aamir’s film are suffering, it is incidental and unfortunate, but they can blame and look only to the source of the problem to find a solution. In the meantime, they can take solace in the fact that the people who are supposed to benefit from the Narmada project have suffered untold hardships and a greater loss than theirs over the years, also due to the actions of NBA whose platform Aamir used to express his wise humanitarian concerns. These unfortunate people will continue to suffer these hardships and losses long after those connected with the film have made their millions, a part of which they want to make from Gujarat.

The right to freedom of speech and expression is guaranteed to all. However, the exercise of that right carries with it the responsibility to bear the consequences. This applies not only to Aamir but also to those who may express their feelings in his favor or against him.

It is ironic that people who show overwhelming concern for the rights and plight of those who are unable to exhibit a film, are completely oblivious of or indifferent to the rights and fate of those who have been all along deprived of the fruits of a development project that may well take half a century before it is completed.

Perhaps, according to those who cry hoarse based on their own notions of undemocratic and intolerant action, that is how the largest democracy in the world is supposed to function.
