Yesterday Monday March 19, 2012 I went for a walk at the grounds of Kawanoe Castle. It has been a while since I have gone out for a relaxing walk. It’s hard to believe I have lived in Shikoku Chuou Shi for almost 3 years and I have never gone to visit the castle. It was a very nice an relaxing walk and I am looking forward to spring getting warmer!

March 12, 2012 Yomiyuri Shimbun

One year has passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami struck Japan. I know this is a cliche saying but it’s hard to believe a year has already passed. It’s still hard to think that 19,000 people the died that day. Today I was performing close-up magic a event and at 2:46PM everybody paused for a moment of silence for the people who lost their lives that day. It was a powerful moment. There have been a lot of issues here in Japan after this event such at the problems of the Fukushima Nuclear power plant, but I feel the country is healing. A lot of great people helped out during this tragedy and are rebuilding the Tohoku region. Sometimes I feel that the problems at the Fukushima nuclear power plant have over shadowed the victims of the quake and tsunami. This week and especially  today there have been a lot of TV programs showing many of the untold stories of what happened one year ago and you can’t help but feel really emotional every time you hear these stories or see the images of the distruction.  Although where I live in Japan was not effected by either the quake or tsunami the fact that it’s the same country, a country where I am currently a permeant resident, has made us all here value each other a little more. Here is to the memory of those lost last year.

Over the past few weeks my friend Shinnosuke and I have been working on creating a Duo stage magic show. This is the first time that I have ever worked to create a magic show with someone where we will perform with integrated routines. I have done one off duo routines with Shinnosuke before but now we decided to create a show together. We started working on it at Joyfull a Japanese family restaurant.  We filled the tables with our MacBooks and iPads to create the format of the show and brainstorm routines and how to integrate them together. After working on some the parts individually we brought everything to Takamatsu in Kagawa Prefecture where we have use a nice big space for rehearsal. We set up the backdrop, props and did a very rough run through of what we put together. We reworked out things that didn’t work and where able to streamline the ideas we had on paper. This completed the first phase of our show creation, now we are working on writing the scripts for the various routines and building props. In March we will be able to try the next stage of the show. We hope to get some magicians and non-magicians to come out to our beta show to give us feedback and see how the show starts to feel in front of people. I am looking forward to crafting our show into a fun show full of magic and laughs.

On Friday February 3, 2011 My magic friends Shinnosuke, Masashi and Kinnikun performed at Hakubi Fruits Cafe and Bar in Takamatsu, Kagawa prefecture. It was a great show with awesome magic friends. The audience was also awesome and they really enjoyed the show and were fun to perform to. The venue itself was excellent. We did a stage show, a close-up show then table hopping after. I hope to get the chance to perform there again very soon! Thanks everyone!

Winter 2011

2011 was an interesting year. A lot happened on the world front. Here in Japan of course we had the big earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. For me the year had its ups and down but was mostly good. I made a lot of new friends this year, and had the opportunity to perform for a lot of great people. I also became more organized this year. This for me was the great for my self motivation.  I also was able to learn a lot of new things and tried to improve myself. I hope that 2012 will be a more peaceful year and I would like to wish all of you all the best in 2012.

My Aquarium

It all started with one male Betta Fish I saw for sale at a home centre this summer. It was all alone in a small bowl and I thought about using it my show. Years ago I had used a Betta for a trick in my show and I had thought about doing it again. This little guy looked lonely and was only 400 Yen. So I bought him and went to another store and bought a bigger tank for him. Then it began. After that I decided to buy a few more fish! I bought some Rummy Nose Tetras and some Penguin Tetras. After that I bought some Ghost Shrimp.  Then I realized that perhaps the tank was to small. So I bought a bigger tank. This is the one posted in the blog. In the smaller tank I now keep the Male Betta and separated from him a female Betta. The big tank has, those same Tetras plus some small Green Neon Tertas, and a flying fox and is filled with water plants and a CO2 system. Buying just one Betta fish turned into an expensive yet fun hobby! I have yet to use the Betta in my show.

It’s been a long time since I have been able to go sightseeing. Last week December 11, 2011 I went to Kurashiki which is located in Okayama Prefecture. I went to visit the old town in the Bikan district. What a wonderful place! The place is filled with 19th century buildings. There are a lot of great shops and good food! Japan has such great food! What I enjoyed was the relaxing and peaceful  atmosphere of this place. I could really imagine 19th century Japan. I was there for only a few hours but I could have spent a lot more time there looking through the various shops and enjoying the good food. It was such a refreshing day trip for me. I can’t wait until I can go visit another great place soon!
