When we moved into the new house I thought the mailbox was really cute, but not functional. I have a little bit of mailbox paranoia. I can imagine all kinds of way my mail could get lost... blowing away, being snatched, etc. This mailbox definitely wasn't going to cut the mustard.

Aaron spotted this mailbox at Home Depot for half off. Someone had already bought it, put it together and brought it back because they didn't have anywhere to bolt it down. I thought it looked like overkill at first but he talked me into it and I'm so glad.

It looks really cute next to the house and I love the security! The front has a slot for the mail carrier to drop stuff in and we use a key to get it out. I can rest easy now that our mail is safe.

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://www.aaronsaysjennysays.com/2010/05/she-says-i-love-our-new-mailbox.html" title="She says... I enjoy getting mail...but never thought of it as "kewl". That was until we got this! Prior to getting this we had a normy mailbox. We'd been lookin around for one like this but normally you'd have to give an arm and a leg for one of these babies, and I am rather fond of grabbing stuff and walking so that simply wasn't an option.

It just so happened that we were in Home Depot and spotted this baby with a 1/2 off sign! I went to check it out and asked one of the sales associates what was the cause for the low price? Was it hot? Was it broken? Missing pieces? What?! Turns out that it was none of the above. A lady and her husband had bought it, put it together and brought it home. Once home they couldn't figure out how to secure it - so they brought it back for a refund. Welp, their misfortune turned out to be our gain. Not only did we get it for 50% off but I was able to use my 10% military discount too!

As you can see the styling of this thing is pretty sweet, but the functionality is what I love. This thing not only stores more mail than your standard box but also keeps it secure. This is great for J and I as we are always out and about. Now we don't have to worry about the mail getting stolen.

She says... it's easy being green at Starbucks

Since we just celebrated Earth Day, it seemed like a green post was in order. Sometimes it can feel like living sustainably is a huge undertaking. We have taken on some challenges like growing our own veggies, installing a rain barrel and composting. But there are lots of little things you can do to... and those small things add up.

One of those small things we have tried to do is use reusable mugs when we go to Starbucks. It might seem insignificant but imagine if everyone used a reusable mug when they went to Starbucks, picture how many paper cups could be saved. We got the ones above for our summer Buck Buck drinks of choice, iced mochas.

This mug is one Aaron got me for hot drinks. I like it because I like to get the size "short" - one smaller than a tall and this is equal to a short. Two other bonuses is that it keeps my drink warm longer and it doesn't spill.

Now I'm not gonna pretend that I remember to bring one everytime I go to Starbucks. We try to keep them in the car, but when you ahhhh don't wash them right away that doesn't always work out. But you can't beat yourself up over it. As long as you keep trying, we're gonna get there.

He Says...keepin it Green at Starbucks

If I could put a restaurant in my basement it would be Starbucks! I love the place, and to be able to roll outta bed and get a hot cup of fresh coffee would be saaweeet. Unfortunately the company doesn't currently offer the basement franchise plan so until that happens Jenny and I will continue to go there...A LOT. Seeing that we go so often and because we try and be environmentally conscious, I have decided to get a very large mug so that I can drink my weeks worth of coffee and only have to wash the huge mug once. Kidding. We do have ceramic cups we keep in the smart car so we can have them when the Starbucks mood strikes.

We have found that Starbucks, or Buck Bucks as I like to say, has some very cool reusable options for their hot and cold beverages. One I really like that we got last summer are our reusable cold bev cups - they actually look like the regular cups you get but they are double walled so they don't do that annoying "sweating" that most cups do in the summer. Combine that great engineering with a cool lookin cup and you got me hooked. I also love that we were able to get cups that are proportional to us..I am huge.

This winter Starbucks came out with some cool reusable thermosy type mugs that also came in the appropriate size for each of us. What I like about the cup is that the top is easy to open and unlike some travel mugs, doesn't hold the coffee in the lip of the cup and then spill on ya on your way to a meeting. Thanks Starbucks for thinking of that...my pants and shirts thank you too.

One thing to note is that I do not like huge unruly bushes next to houses. Never have. First house we had, Jenny went away for a weekend and 'ZIP' bushes were out and new nicer looking plants were in their place.

BEFORE

AFTER

Pair my disdain for ugly bushes together with the ownership of this new beautiful piece of engineering genius and you get my latest project on the house. I like to refer to it as "DEATH TO BUSHES". When we moved into the house it made me tick to see all the bushes smooshed up against the house just hangin' out all over with no shape, no symmetry, no redeeming value - plus there were some in very random places - 1 standing off to the side of the porch, 1 standing off the side of the garage - what is that about?

Pre-DEATH TO BUSHES

Welp, seeing that we moved in right before winter hit, I was unable to get out there and lay down my wrath on the bushes...that was until last week when the weather warmed. Again Jenny was away for business and it was just me against the bushes. I am pleased to say that I won. Something so satisfying to taking something you don't like and making a new clear palette full of possibility.

Post DEATH - Cleaned up and ready for new 'us' landscaping

It's not all about rage filled chainsaw wielding fury - I love making the house 'ours'. The bushes that were there were NOT 'us' and so therefore they had to go. I am excited to start to make changes the yard and landscape that reflects what my little buddy and I love, and now that the 'ooglay' is gone we can begin.

She says... he gets carried away with a saw & an axe

Aaron hates bushes and shrubs. That's all there is to say. I discovered this with our first house. There used to be nice shrubbery in front of the sunroom. It was a bit messy at first but after some trimming, it was just typical greenery. Aaron hated it with a passion. He tore a big shrub out of the backyard and put a little fence up to hide the garbage bins and I think that started a trend.

I came home from a Storytelling Conference to find that the bushes that were once in front of the house (photo above) were suddenly gone (photo below).

Granted he planted some really cute flowers there instead, so I couldn't say much.

That was his plan. Divert her attention with pretty flowers and she won't notice.

But it's hard to miss a pile of green carcasses out on the curb.

Now we are in a new house and there are shrubs galore. Or shall I say there were. My parents got Aaron a chainsaw for Easter and now the yard looks like this.

Am I happy about chopping down every living thing in the yard? Not completely. But Aaron has a vision and as long as he promises a plan with new plantings that is our compromise.

Phase one of Operation Yard Improvement clearly is one of cutting down and clearing out. Stay tuned for phase two which is plotting and planting.

I heard a song on a Lincoln commercial I really liked and when I looked it up it was Shiny Toy Guns. Major Tom is my all time favorite Shiny Toy Guns song.

Everytime I heard them after that I liked them more and more. I really like how Chad Petree and Sisely Treasure's voices (cool name) work together. Sisely just kicks butt period.

When we were in Stratton, VT for the Burton US Open we could hardly believe it when we found out Shiny Toy Guns was playing a concert there. Check out Sisley's rainbow hair and sparkle tights. Awesome.

It was one of the best concerts I have ever been to because I was in the front row. They played all my favorite songs.

Here is my current favorite song - You Are the One.

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://www.aaronsaysjennysays.com/2010/04/she-says-shiny-toy-guns-is-my-fav-new.html" title="She says...
Here is one of my favorites...Ricochet. Great song for listening to in the car...just easy on the gas.

RICOCHET! from Shiny Toy Guns on Vimeo.

Here is another that I really like...Ghost Town. In most cases screeching would be unpleasant but somehow in this song Sisely makes it work and its amazing. Plus this video - the animation is just freakin kewl.

Ghost Town from Shiny Toy Guns on Vimeo.

When we were visiting Stratton, Vermont for the 2010 Burton US Open we were pleasantly surprised to find out that they would be playing a show ON THE MOUNTAIN! It was amazing! Snow under our feet, band sounded great, and mountains all around...plus we were right in the front row! If you haven't checked these guys out go do it now.

We have been going to Toronto for while now, mostly for the Toronto Film Festival every September. Once of the best things we have discovered in Toronto and gone back to again and again is a small cafe called Crepes a Go Go. It is a charming little spot run by a woman who moved from Paris to Toronto as a cinematographer and ended up doing this instead. She is usually there dashing around and casting her eye over every detail. She delivers your crepes right into to your hands at which point she carefully tears back the paper and wishes you Bon Appétit!

As you can see we really do go back year after year. I love the savory crepes and the sweet crepes. My favorites are the Parisienne with scrambled egg, swiss, mushrooms, red onion and dill and one they don't have on their online menu which is orange marmalade and dark chocolate. The crepe with good ol' maple syrup is delicious also.

If you want a restaurant where you can have a mouthwatering crepe and be fussed over this is the place.

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://www.aaronsaysjennysays.com/2010/03/she-says-crepes-go-go-is-one-of-my-fav.html" title="She says...

Who knew that a thin pancakey food could be sooo good. I think the great thing about this place is the variety, sweet or savory, they gotcha covered. Plus the location is great - right on Yorkville and you have the option, if the weather is nice, to sit outside and enjoy the views.

One of my favorites sweet crepes is the Big Ben Brie - brie cheese and fresh raspberry jam - delicious and pure genius.

Check out all the different kinds o crepes!!

For a savory crepe I'd recommend either the Cote d'Azur or a Popeye. Both of them cheesy and delicious! To wash it all down, they also produce their own drink they call Limonana. Its a lemonade with mint infused into it. It might look a little weird at first because of the little pieces of fresh mint in it but trust me - its gewd!

While you're there you've gotta talk to the owner - super nice and very interesting story. Before opening the restaurant she was a cinematographer She decided to take the passion she had for making great movies into making amazing crepes! You gotta check it out - we've been going since we found it in 2005. Just look at how excited I looked!
Well this mean lookin little bugger kicks bacteria off your toothbrush using ultraviolet light. According to Zapi '..uses germicidal ultraviolet light to kill 99.9% of germs on your toothbrush in just minute'. I think that .1% of germs that gets through are the nice kind so I am ok...ok, I just made that up, but cmon .1% is nothin.

Why does it matter to kill that stuff on your toothbrush? These germs cause stuff like gum disease, colds, and bad breath...and oh by the way there are a ton of 'em in your bathroom. Not to say I am a germaphobe...I've been known to pick a Skittle up off the ground (if its under 5 seconds)...but I do think there is something to getting all that gunk off your brush.

If that doesn't sell you on it...did I mention that it has a cool glowing blue light? It looks very cool when you're going to bed and there is the ominous blue germ killer death ray radiating from the bathroom. Check it out here are some other cool designs. They just look like germ killin' machines!

They really caught my attention when they started making these egg shaped versions. What can I say? I'm a sucker for cute design.

I don't know how much of a risk toothbrush bacteria really is. I mean I haven't sanitized my toothbrush since I've been brushing my teeth but I seem to have made it through ok. But once you start thinking about it, you start to get visions of crazy germs all over your toothbrush.

The only thing holding me back was the prize of these babies. $30 to $35 seemed a bit much. Woot to the rescue! Woot Kids more specifically. They had Zapi Ya Ya for $15! Love Woot!

So I ordered one and Aaron got one too. I'm curious to read what Aaron posts... I know he got a kick out of the particular Zapi he got... but was he being kept awake at night, fearful of bacteria running amok on his toothbrush? I think not.

Was I suckered by bacteria paranoia? Possibly. Was I blinded by a cute contraption to hold my toothbrush? Definitely.

The LaBrea Tarpits! It's the location of big puddles of tar that trapped animals for ages. The puddles are still there and they continue to bubble and gurgle away. Inside you can see displays of critters they pulled out of there.Another thing to try out is hiking Runyan Canyon. In-n-Out Burger.... (here is the secret menu in case you needed it) The fried are just kind of ehhhh, but the burgers. I don't know what they put in those burgers to make them better than any burger on earth but it's working. The chocolate shakes are great too.

And Jamba Juice! Seeing it again now that it is on DVD reminded me why I loved it so much.

#1 the outfits - I loved Summer's vintage clothes and Tom's hipster combos of shirt and tie with a zip up hoodie.

#2 the color - There aren't many movies that make such good use of color. There are some scenes like the greeting card conference room where you realize everyone is wearing shades of grey and beige. Then there are some scenes like Tom's "morning after dance" where blue makes an impact.

#3 the music - of course we get to hear Zooey sing but the rest of the soundtrack is great too... a mix of eighties classics with new indie hits that really help tell the story. Tom mentions how he hears music when he sees Summer - cue "She's like the wind".

#4 creative story telling - the timeline jumps around from day 1 of the 500 days to day 345. Scenes are repeated with different points of view. It doesn't get confusing, it adds richness to the story.

#5 actors - other than Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel the other actors are relatively unknown. They all have great performances from Tom's 30 year old in a 13 year old body's sister and his kooky friends.

If you can't tell by now, I absolutely loved this movie. There are some movies that I could watch over and over and this is one of them.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 259px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_4q-HXpY6MBE/S48zLdaD-0I/AAAAAAAAAUA/GcBDywE2gCg/s400/500DaysPoster.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5444626746479737666" />

He Says...500 Days even a dude can enjoy

Is this a "chick flick"? Honest answer - kinda. I think this has plenty for everyone though. The writing is good and there is enough comedy in this so that its not all romance - so if you don't like "romance" flicks, you will be fine. This is a good film.

Sometimes in movies like this its the standard "hey I am a square guy but whoa you are a crazy girl that doesn't live by the rules so how can this ever work?!" but not with this. I think both characters in this film are pretty evenly matched. They are also believable which for me is a good thing because otherwise I get distracted by it and in the back of my head I'm constantly thinkin "oh cmon".

Below is my favorite scene. This is him coming out of his apartment the morning after he and Summer "seal the ol' deal" - Hilarious

This is one of those movies that bounces around a lot from different points in time, but unlike Memento it doesn't leave you sayin "Heh?!". This movie also brings in some artistic feeling without being to crazy and annoying. Only problem with a real fire is that it can be dangerous and you can end up lookin like a toasted marshmallow if you're not careful.

Enter the electric fireplace! All the look, feel and sound of a real fireplace without the fear of charred body parts. The new house has a bigger master bedroom so one thing we were able to fit in there was an electric fireplace. We were able to find one for a great deal at the Depot for half price add to that my 10% military discount and you have one happy guy...me.

The great thing about this fireplace is that you don't have to worry about venting this baby. Just find a wall it looks good on, plug it in any outlet and get yourself ready for the show. To top it all off it has a remote so you can turn it on from anywhere in the room - this feature reminds me a little of something Quagmire might have on Family Guy, but I think its giggity giggity goooood.

She says... our electric fireplace makes our bedroom feel like a B&B

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_4q-HXpY6MBE/S43VQZsD-zI/AAAAAAAAAT4/oC7sWvhhMPI/s400/fireplace.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5444242002311117618" />We are getting still getting used to going from heating a 1400 sq ft house to a 3000 sq ft house. While the downstairs can be comfortable, the rooms upstairs are a bit chilly. Our solution? An electric fireplace. We figured it would take the edge off and add a little coziness to our bedroom. We don't have a lot of bedroom furniture either so it's a nice place to put picture frames. (Avert your eyes from the wallpaper!)

We planned on getting the fireplace as our Xmas gift to each other but didn't end up looking until a month later. Turns out that worked out great because all the fireplaces were on clearance at Home Depot! We got a $800 fireplace for $350! It had a couple small scratches but Aaron fixed those with a touch up pen.

The electric fireplace definitely warms the room up and when I'm laying in bed watching the flames I feel like I'm staying at a bed and breakfast. And the best thing? The REMOTE! Hah! I don't even have to get out of bed to turn it off!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_4q-HXpY6MBE/S43VDoGn0rI/AAAAAAAAATw/3xmvaGhQwfU/s400/remote.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5444241782842315442" />

She says... Which doesn't make sense, I know. I was so surprised when I first heard Scarlett Johansson sing. But she sure can sing and I love her with Pete Yorn. They go well together and their album Break Up is a moody toe-tapper. There aren't many albums where I like every song on the playlist, but this is one of them.

Not only do I like the music, but I like the mood they have created around the album. This hint of a story - were they "together" and they broke up?... the Relator video, the photos all point to it. When an album can create this ambience, well that is pretty cool.

Oh and how great does Scarlett look as a brunette?

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://www.aaronsaysjennysays.com/2010/02/she-says-i-could-listen-to-relator-over.html" title="She says... Add to that Pete Yorn and you got yoself a classic hit. This is one of those songs that you can't help but tap your toes...well unless you don't have toes, in which case I am sorry for being so insensitive.

This is a tune that you can turn the volume up and sing at the top of your lungs while driving to work. Having said that I have embarrassed myself several times while doing just that. So listen to this in your car at your own risk...you've been warned.

I think it has a catchy melody but the sound is so unique that it doesn't get annoying after hearing more than a couple of times. I am really excited to see more music come out of these two. I am hoping this isn't the only record they will make together. Definitely check this out.

She says... Then it was a Cheerleaders USA. Now instead of girls in shorts carrying wings, you will find the Sunrise Steakhouse & Grill. I was interested in stopping because the sign said "Korean BBQ". I am half Korean and I love Korean food. Well I love my mom's Korean food and I'm always trying to find something close to it.

Once we got inside the menu appeared to be more Japanese. They have large tables where the chefs "perform" and cook your meal. Chop Chop Fire Fire as I affectionately call it.

We preferred to sit at a smaller table with a hibachi. You can get shabu shabu where you cook your food in a pot of hot broth or you can grill your meat and veggies on the hibachi. We went with the steak and veggies. The steak was a little bland until we got the dipping sauce and I would have liked more veggies, but it was pretty good. Sometimes I think it's weird to go out and pay for food that you have to cook yourself, but really there is something about it that is so much fun.

The best part was the salad dressing. Yes the salad dressing. The meal started with a bowl of miso soup and small salad. The house salad dressing was so good I almost licked the bowl. It is a sweet dressing with a hint of garlic. (Ok maybe more than a hint, it hits you after you are done eating.) I loved it so much I asked if you could buy it and you can! You can buy it by the pint or the quart. I bought a pint that night and went back later for a quart.

I think the big chef tables would be fun for a big group but for now - all I can think of when I see Sunrise is SALAD DRESSING!

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://www.aaronsaysjennysays.com/2010/02/she-says-sunrise-steakhouse-grill-was.html" title="She says... It throws you off at first look at the sign..."Steakhouse & Bar, Korean BBQ, etc, etc..." there are five different names but it all spells out G-O-O-D.

There are a couple of things you can do when you go. If there's just two of you I would definitely recommend the hibachi. This is where you have the fire right at your table which add a little excitement to the meal! We found that ordering one meat and one veggie plate plenty o food for two. Your meal comes with miso soup and a salad - which by the way the dressing is AH-mah-zing and they sell it by the pint or quart so make sure to pick some up.

If you're with a large group, go for the chop chop fire fire (as Jenny likes to call it) table - its where the chef cooks in the middle and you sit around and oh and ah at the onion volcano and rice balls chucked at your neighbor. Overall this is a great spot and I would definitely check it out again!

He Says...This juicer kicks grass

Ok, haven't actually tried juicing wheat grass YET, I just couldn't resist saying that. I thought about getting a more expensive model like the Jack LaLanne Power Juicer but I liked the price and the look of the Waring - kinda has that retro thing going for it.

The thing I like about it is that there are few moving parts so it makes for easy clean up...those fruits make a mess when they meet their maker! It also only has one switch - 'on/off'. It's had plenty of power for everything I've thrown at it so far. This is a good thing for me - seeing that I have somebody that really likes her juice!

What could make this thing better? If this juicer had a larger chute it would be nice as you do have to chop your fruits a few times. That is the only drawback to this...honestly a small price to pay for this machine. Plus you don't have to look at the box with LaLanne and his creepy eyebrows laughing at how much you paid for his machine

She says... When we started our detox there were a lot of juice recipes on the plan. Seemed like the time to get a juicer had finally come.

I thought we would have to pay a couple hundred dollars to get a good juicer, but we found the Waring Professional Juice Extractor at Target for $60 and it came with a $10 Target gift card. It had good reviews so we went with it.

I have to admit. Aaron is the juicer. He is the juice master. I haven't run it once since we got it. I think he really enjoys annihilating vegetables and fruits.

I haven't used it but it appears to work well. It works through a carrot like nobody's business. I never looked at broccoli and though "Ooooh look at that juicy piece of broccoli" but by George that juicer gets juice out of broccoli!

So I think the juice works great cause I am getting tasty concoctions like carrot, beet and apple juice!

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://www.aaronsaysjennysays.com/2010/02/she-says-i-love-our-juicer.html" title="She says...
