Banish Stains from Your Home

Stains are every house owner’s worst nightmare. Each stain is different and requires a special kind of treatment. Stains can be classified into categories such as intentional stains like wood stains or paint, accidental ones like food and drink stains, and natural stains like rust. Usually detergents and stand-alone stain removers are used to get rid of stains. While some stains are easily removed with the help of cleaning products, certain others are of a fussy nature and require special treatment. Read on to find out some simple tips on how to make your living space stain-free.

Hand or machine wash is very effective in removing greasy stains like oils, butter and machine grease. Rubbing detergent or dry-cleaning solvent directly on the stain can also prove helpful. If a yellow stain remains after solvent treatment, make use of bleach to remove the stain.

To remove greasy stains from non-washable items, the stain must be sponged from center to edge with a stain-removal agent. This process must be repeated several times and the stain dried completely before the next sponging. Absorbents like cornstarch, corn meal and French chalk are effective in removing stains from non-washable fabrics. Applying a coat of baking soda paste to the stains has also proven useful in removing tough stains.

The most effective method to remove non-greasy stains, i.e., those caused by coffee, juices, and ink is to soak the cloth in cool water. The stain may usually come out in half an hour’s time; but sometimes the cloth may have to be soaked overnight. If the stain still persists, use liquid detergent and wash with cool water. Bleach must always be used as a last resort. To remove coffee stains, mix egg yolk with warm water and rub on the stain. Wash it off after some time and voila, the stain will disappear.

In addition to quenching thirst, cola can also remove rust as the phosphoric acid in the soda works wonders to bring the item to its original glory. A combination of baking soda and white vinegar will give a complete makeover to your favourite brass pieces. After applying the paste to the pieces, it should be rinsed off and dried with a soft clean cloth.

In order to clean your dirty sink, mix four tablespoons of baking soda with water. Wet a cloth with the mixture and then clean the sink. After the sink is dry, repeat the process once again with a clean dry cloth. To unclog sinks, first pour ½ cup of baking soda, followed by another ½ cup of white distilled vinegar. Once the mixture has bubbled over, rinse with hot water.

A mixture of vinegar and few drops of baby oil in warm water is the perfect cleaning agent for vinyl and linoleum floors. This mixture is very effective in removing both greasy and non-greasy stains. It is very important to remove stains from carpeted areas as soon as possible. Paper towels or an absorbent cloth are very useful in blotting up the stain. You must repeat the soak and absorb treatment till the stain disappears. A mild solution of ammonia and cold water does wonders in removing stains from hardwood floors.

Bleach, vinegar and borax powder are usually used to remove tough stains from toilet seats and bowls. Pour half a cup of bleach in the toilet bowl. Clean it thoroughly after few hours. Vinegar is best left overnight in the toilet for a better result. It is very helpful in removing lime scale and hard ware deposits.

Cleaning Up Your Home with Condiments

The Importance of Keeping Friendship Alive

“Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you what you actually are”, is an old saying. Friendship is a relationship that has the strongest of bonds with no written laws. However, once a career and a family life come along, most friendships are put on the backburner. From spending hours on end in the college canteen or over the phone with friends, we reach a phase when we see them only a couple of times a year and catch up over the phone on just special occasions like birthdays and festivals!

The demands of being a wife, mother, family man or career person leaves very little time to spend with friends. Mobile phone chats, SMS and Facebook do seem like saviours—you at least know where your friends are and how they are faring. But is that really enough to keep a friendship thriving? More so, are these interactions enough for your own good? Friends help you stay sane. They take you back to days when you didn’t juggle the multiple roles you have today; which means, a chat with friends actually strips you off the “extra” baggage, revealing the real you! Isn’t that precious?

Tina, a work-at-home-mom, needs to catch up with her friends at least once a month. SMS, phone calls and interactions over Facebook is a given! “I lead a mad, mad life! There’s work, my baby, my home and family to take care of, not to mention a never-ending list of errands. Meeting my friends once in a while helps me relax and takes me back to a time when I was a free bird,” says Tina. “I know people who’ve stopped catching up with friends after marriage. So, here’s how you can protect your garden during the monsoons and keep it looking fresh and green all through.
Monsoon is a time when plants need the least amount of watering. Even a day or two of dry spells during rains are okay for your plants. However, if you do feel that your plants need to be watered during a dry phase, do so early in the morning or at late evening. Nonetheless, avoid overdoing it; it is the monsoon season after all. The problem starts when it rains continuously for a number of days, flooding your lawn and destroying the result of your toil.
Creating rain channels, so that the rain water collects and soaks underground, is one method that you can adapt. This can be done by making a shallow drainage, which will allow the water to seep through the ground. By zoning the areas, you can design a neat rain channel using landscape plants.
Weeds, pests and fungus are other threats that the lawn or garden faces during monsoons. Organic lawn fertilizers help to get rid of these threats and at the same time nourish the soil with nutrients. Often, people use a lot of nitrogen-rich fertilizers. Look for brown patches on your lawn. If you see them, it means you have used excessive fertilizers and need to cut it down.

Mow the grass from time to time to avoid overgrowth, as this can make your lawn look disheveled and shabby.
Apart from the availability of sunlight, the drainage system and also the design of the house, the soil too has to be checked. The soil should neither be too sticky, like clay, nor should it be too loose like sand. You can do a small test yourself to know if you have got the right kind of soil. Take a handful of soil and hold it tightly. If it is in between the clay texture and the sand texture, this is the right kind of soil you need. If it holds tightly together, it means it is sticky; and if it slips between your fingers, it is sandy.

The ravages of monsoon are at its peak in Kerala. And just as the month of Karkidakam takes its toll on the human body and mind, your home can also suffer several damages. With a little care and effort, you can rainproof your home and furnishing this monsoon.

Monsoons may result in creaking furniture, damp sofas and smelly interiors. High levels of humidity lead to damp sofas and fungal growth. Clean them using a dry cloth and apply an antiseptic liquid on the infected area. It is a good idea to clean the sofas using a vacuum cleaner, once a week. A dehumidifier can keep antique furniture safe, and a pest control exercise before the monsoons will keep away termites, beetles and cockroaches.
Fungus setting into wardrobes is another major issue during the rains. You can leave desiccants inside the cupboards to avoid dampness. Avoid keeping damp or semi dried clothes in the wardrobe. Leaving naphthalene or camphor balls will help prevent fungus.

It is advisable to keep away carpets during the monsoon. Roll them up and store them in a dry place. Garden chairs should be kept indoors during rains. This will prevent cracking or chipping of the paint. Indoor plants should be preferably kept outside for sometime during the rains.

The cracks and the gaps in the walls should be filled with white cement or Plaster of Paris on a temporary basis. And don’t forget to get them repaired after the monsoon season.

Place a basket near the front door so that you don’t have to carry dripping umbrellas indoors. Also,dedicate a space outside the house for wet shoes.

There is high chance of short circuits during the monsoon; so get the electrician to fix even a minor problem before the rains.

To keep your homes smelling good this season, always have potpourris, incense sticks, aromatic candles and room fresheners handy.
