Travel Health: Useful Medical Information For Good Health Before Your Departure, During Your Trip And After Your Return.

The diseases most commonly seen in travellers are diarrhoea, malaria (if you travel in a malaria-infested area), accidents (when travelling by car or swimming), wound infections and sexually transmitted diseases.

- Diarrhoea is caused by contaminated food and drinking-water. You must therefore be careful if your are travelling in poor hygiene conditions.

- Malaria is transmitted by mosquitoes, so the first thing to do is to protect yourself against these mosquitoes.

- In order to prevent accidents during travelling, it is wise to apply the same precautions as those taken at home. In addition, it is very important that all wounds should be thoroughly disinfected in order to avoid infection.

· TRAVELLER’S DIARRHOEA

Many intestinal infections are attributable to infections picked up by mouth or hands. With a little care most of these illnesses can be prevented. Hepatitis A, typhoid fever, polio and cholera still occur in countries with poor hygiene, but these diseases are easily prevented.

However, the chance is rather large that you will still contract a light and/or nondangerous form of traveller's diarrhoea. Traveller's diarrhoea almost always spontaneously clears up after a few days, but can nevertheless be irritating. And a risk to your overall and travel health.

In the first place measures must be taken against dehydration. Likewise, treatment of the symptoms must be considered in order to reduce the number of bowel movements and relieve other symptoms such as fever, vomiting and stomach cramps. Sometimes a more serious form of diarrhoea occurs, for which specific treatment with antibiotics is indicated or where hospitalisation or fluid replacement appears unavoidable.

It takes only a few basic preventive measures to make your trip a success : Total prevention of traveller's diarrhoea is impossible and it is obvious that preventive measures can seldom be strictly followed at all times. But following preventive measures do significantly reduce the risk of contracting serious diarrhoea: In order to maintain good travel health wash your hands before eating and avoid (if possible):

- raw vegetables and fruits that you have not peeled yourself
- uncooked or unpasteurized dairy products
- insufficiently cooked sea foods (+ Hepatitis A !) and meat
- “local meals” which do not smell fresh
- ice-cream bought from street merchants (industrial ice straight from the deep-freeze is probably safe).

Cooked meals should be served hot. The place where you eat is also important. A meal taken from a stall presents a greater risk than a meal taken in a restaurant. Avoid restaurants where there are a lot of insects.
Avoid tap water and ice-cubes. Bottled water and soft drinks are safe. Watch out for bottle caps that have already been used.

It is very important to disinfect drinking-water on adventure trips. Total sterilisation of drinking water is impossible. The following measures considerably reduce the contamination risk and safeguard your travel health:

- Boiling the water is very effective.
- A good alternative is chemical disinfection with chlorine drops (e.g. Hadex®, Drinkwell chloor®; available in sport shops specialized in outdoor activities) or chlorine tablets (Certisil Combina®; chloramine tablets; available at the pharmacy). Their effect can be improved by first filtering unclear water. Silver salts (Micropur®, Certisil Argento®) are not very suitable to disinfect water, but they keep disinfected water germ-free for a long time.

For adventurous travellers conscious to travel health it is best to buy a portable water-filter. The use of antibiotics in order to prevent diarrhoea before it occurs can be dangerous + Also the use of other preventive medications is not recommended.

. How to treat diarrhoea?

It is extremely important to consume sufficient liquid and salt in order to prevent dehydration. You can do this by taking salt solutions, but tea with lemon, broth, soft drinks and fruit juice, supplemented with salt crackers are tastier. Commercial salt products are available on the market (ORS-solution).

Taking an anti-diarrhoea preparation (loperamide, e.g. Imodium®) can greatly reduce the number of bowel movements, with a considerable reduction of the complaints as a result. Imodium® may only be used by adults and older children and only for treating ordinary watery diarrhoea: 1 capsule after every loose movement up to a maximum of 4 per day.

Antibiotics are indicated :

1. If blood, mucus or pus are present in the stools.
2. If after 24 to 48 hours, there is no sign of improvement and the diarrhoea is accompanied by fever (above 38.5 C) or severe abdominal cramps, or if there are more than six stools per 24 hours and especially when these also occur at night.
3. Or if because of travel circumstances a quicker solution is absolutely desirable . Appropriate antibiotics are only to be used on doctor’s prescription

· SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES

Casual sexual contacts tend to be higher while on holiday abroad. Sexually transmitted diseases, particularly AIDS, form therefore an important risk for travellers. Quite often unintentional and unsafe sexual contact takes place under alcohol influence. Prevention while on holiday abroad is no different from the precautions you take at home. Adequate use of a condom, preferably bought at home, is absolutely essential. Only a water-soluble lubricant should be used, but it only offers a partial guarantee (e.g. KY gel). Vaccination against hepatitis B is advised. Always consult your doctor if you think you are at risk, even when there are no symptoms.

· MALARIA (swamp fever, malaria)

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by a parasite (called Plasmodium) transmitted by the bite of the Anopheles mosquito. There are four different types of which Malaria falciparum is the most dangerous and the most widespread. The incubation period – the time between an infecting bite and the appearance of the disease – varies from ten days to four weeks (rarely several months).

The symptoms include attacks of fever, but can initially be quite similar to influenza. If adequate treatment is not started in time, an attack may sometimes result in death within a few days.

. Where does malaria occur?

Malaria only occurs in those areas in which Anopheles mosquitoes are present : in the tropics and in a large number of subtropical areas. From a height of 1.500 to 2.500 m onwards, depending on temperature and climate, Anopheles mosquitoes are either rare or non-existent.

In most big cities there is little or no risk at all of infection, except in Africa where a real risk exists.

Risk also exists in the suburbs of the big cities in Asia (e.g. in India). In a number of areas the risk varies according to the season.

. How can malaria be prevented?

It is very important for travel health to avoid mosquito bites : the Anopheles mosquito only bites between dusk and dawn, is rather small and hardly makes any noise.

- In the evening wear light-coloured clothing which covers your arms and legs as much as possible. Apply repellent cream with a DEET basis (20 to 50%, for children and pregnant women preferably 20 to 30%) to the uncovered parts of your body. Repeat this every four to six hours (it will not protect you all night).

Non containing DEET repellents were less examined; Autan-Active. and Mosegor. are however excellent safe products.

- Sleep in rooms that leave no access to mosquitoes, (mosquito nets on the sills, electrically-warmed anti-mosquito plates, air-conditioning) or sleep under a mosquito net impregnated with permethrine or deltamethrine hung over the bed with the edges tucked under the mattress.

If these measures are carried out correctly, the risk of malaria will be reduced by 80 to 90% and travel health is maintained

. The intake of pills as prevention

There is no drug efficient enough to prevent malaria 100%, which means that quite often a combination of measures is preferable. Also the drugs used have changed over the years. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of drugs should be considered against the risk of malaria infection. These risks are dependent on the visited country, and on the region, the season, the duration of your stay and the kind of trip.

Some people might be troubled by the side effects while taking antimalarial drugs. These are usually mild and are not always a reason to stop taking the pills. Sometimes it may be necessary to change to another type of medication due to intestinal problems, allergic reactions or other intolerance symptoms.

Therefore it is the doctor who can best decide for each individual which drug to use. This explains why individuals from the same group may end up taking different drugs.

Finally, as no drug is 100% effective in preventing malaria, it is important that if an attack of fever occurs in the first three months after your return from the tropics, a malaria infection should be considered as a possibility despite the correct use of the drug prescribed.

However, it is reassuring to know that malaria, provided it is recognised in time, is easy to treat without any danger of recurrent attacks. The belief that "once malaria always malaria" is totally untrue.

Movement in a room creates changing social dynamics. And language is a social activity. Also, when students move they become more aware of their environment. This is a sort of heightened sensitivity. It increases their perceptive skills. The input is channeled straight to the brain.

When we move, we breathe deeper. We get lots more oxygen. This helps us think better. But really, moving is just plain more fun. When we get up to do an ESL activity (as opposed to sitting down), I can see many more smiles.

ESL activities are supposed to help students learn English so they can use it. Reading and writing can help with this. But I feel that listening and speaking are the master skills that underlie them.

If we make activities that encourage listening and speaking, our students will learn better. And deeper.

So I have four ingredients in my ESL activities.

Repeating

You need to memorize a lot to learn a language. And repetition is essential. Ask yourself: Do you have activities that help the students repeat the target language? So they can hear it many times, and say it many times?

Listening

Unfortunately, it is easy to start listening and then give up soon because, well, simply, we don\'t understand it. And often students don\'t have to listen. They can guess very well. We have to change that by making activities with question and answer. A bit of randomness is good. So that students need to listen to the question, or perhaps another student’s prior answer to make a good response.

Listening to English passages that have reductions can be fun. The students know the words, but can’t understand them due to the reductions. They really pick up their attention to these listening activities.

Speaking

Let the students interact with each other, and exchange information. It doesn\'t always have to be deep and meaningful if the target language is challenging. Flashcards give good ‘seeds’ for the students to start talking about things.

A Sample

In my classes we have a ball learning English. Literally. I have a ball. Everyone stands up (movement). We throw the ball and catch it (more movement). We ask questions to each other (speaking, listening). We keep doing this (repeating). The set of questions is limited. For instance, general routine questions. What time do you..? Where do you...? And so on.

There is one important thing to remember. Throwing balls is fun but not for too long. It makes repeating more fun but not for too long. Perhaps 4 to 8 minutes of fun is good.

In terms of the total physical response method, verbs are the center of the vocabulary teaching, because only the teaching of verbs can be possible through the commands-responses way. The vocabulary to learn are decided not by related texts or grammar rules, but by whether they are easy to act out in the classrooms (Asher, 1977: 4). The three methods based on behaviourism all attach much importance to drills and constant exercises in the teaching and learning of vocabulary.

Then comes the communicative view of language learning which mainly focuses on communication ability instead of grammatical accuracy. The natural approach method which considers vocabulary an important part of learning is based on this view. Krashen and Terrell (1983: 156) think that students\' attention in this approach should not be on vocabulary learning but on communication, and true vocabulary acquisition should be encouraged. In this approach, the teaching pays more attention to the students\' interest and emotional state, and students are supposed to learn vocabulary through relevant input and master the complete information of vocabulary rather than only vocabulary itself.

Vocabulary learning is the foundation of foreign language learning, and it is closely related to the development of English learners\' listening, speaking, reading and writing ability. However, the result of vocabulary teaching is not optimistic in China. How to memorize vocabulary effectively has always been an unsolved problem. Traditional vocabulary teaching methods mainly focus on the teaching of vocabulary meaning and usage, and the students learn by rote. Therefore, the students always find it difficult to remember and use new words with such mechanical methods. Dual Coding Theory (DCT) belongs to cognitive psychological perspective which hypothesizes two sub-systems in the cognition process: one verbal and the other non-verbal. The verbal system manages the representation and processing of language in all its forms, whereas the nonverbal system deals with the representation and processing of nonverbal objects, events and situations. The primary form of nonverbal representation is mental imagery. The paper tries to probe into Dual Coding Theory and its application in English vocabulary teaching. The purpose is to explore vocabulary teaching methods based on Dual Coding Theory and find out whether they are effective in vocabulary teaching. Through the experiment, the effect of the vocabulary teaching methods based on Dual Coding Theory is testified. Therefore, the conclusion can be drawn that the DCT-based methods are effective in vocabulary teaching. Hopefully, the findings of the paper can be of some reference value to vocabulary teaching and learning.

1.1 The Background and Significance of the StudyVocabulary is a central factor in language, and it takes a fundamental role in language. Psychometric studies suggest that vocabulary takes a very central role in reading ability, together with other specific factors such as decoding, comprehension and rate (Sadoski, 2005). As is always cited that 'Without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed' (Wilkins,1978). Therefore, vocabulary is the premise of language learning. What vocabulary to language is brick to skyscraper. A good command of vocabulary is the guarantee of learning second language well.Literature review reports a waxing and waning of the importance of vocabulary in research and teaching over the last 100 years. In the early times of English teaching in China, structuralism prevailed for decades, which mainly focus on grammar and sentence patterns. Therefore, vocabulary did not receive much attention. Usually the main vocabulary teaching model is that teachers just teach the meaning of words and students are required to memorize the words. Gradually, the significance of vocabulary draws more and more attention with the evolution of linguistic theory. Currently, the study of vocabulary teaching and learning has become a popular issue of linguistics. As to English major students, however, vocabulary is still a big problem. English major students are supposed to take TEM-4 and TEM-8 examinations to check their English proficiency, and the basic vocabulary quantity demanded for the two tests is 8000 and 10000 respectively. So it is not an easy task for the English major students to remember so many words. And in the class, teachers usually do not spend much time on vocabulary teaching, neither do they find a very effective way for vocabulary teaching. There is still a lot to explore about the effective methods of vocabulary teaching and learning.Dual Coding Theory (DCT), first proposed by Allan Paivio (1971) , holds that there are two systems in human cognition process: the verbal system and non-verbal system. The information processing in people\'s mind is accomplished in two different channels forming two different representations. The theory belongs to cognitive psychology, and it has been used to guide first language teaching in western countries and achieved some progress, but it has not been widely applied in China. There has been a few research about the application of DCT in middle school vocabulary teaching and college English teaching, but studies about the effect of DCT on vocabulary teaching of English major students is still a blank. Therefore, the study is meaningful to help the teachers and students to find an effective way to teach and learn vocabulary. To sum up, the study is significant in two aspects. First, it will further the research of the application of DCT to English vocabulary teaching in China. Second, this study may provide some other methods of vocabulary teaching and learning to teachers and students.

1.2 The Purpose of the Study The study aims at finding a solution to make the English major students be more effective in vocabulary learning on the theoretical basis of DCT. The teaching methods based on DCT not only focus on verbal language, but also on nonverbal representations. This paper is supposed to explore the way to apply DCT effectively into the teaching and learning of vocabulary.

1.3 The Organization of the PaperThe paper consists of five parts. The first part is the introduction of the whole paper, in which the background, significance, purpose and organization of the paper are included. The second part is the literature review of the studies on DCT and vocabulary teaching. The third part is about DCT and the DCT-based vocabulary teaching methods. Several vocabulary teaching methods based on DCT will be introduced in this part. The fourth part is about the research, in which the specific steps of the research will be illustrated. The last part is the conclusion of the whole study.

It seems that practically every day, there is a new fad in teaching kids to read. Fortunately, kids learn to read using a wide variety of styles, so No matter what is in fashion, most of the kids will have very little trouble. Unfortunately, No matter what teaching curriculum is used, some kids have trouble learning to read. There is no single answer on how to learn reading, but if your kid is having difficulties with it, there are many things to try. Unfortunately, there are even more things to avoid.

You see, teaching kids how to read is big business. This means that anytime someone can come up with a new program that promises to solve all of your learning to read problems, they can make a lot of money off of it. The more unscrupulous the business, the more money they stand to make off of learning to read. When I worked as a tutor, I saw this all the time. We would often lose kids to clinics that would promise to raise their reading level 3 to 5 years in six weeks! This promise was impossible, of course, but they would prey off of hopeful parents who just wanted to solve their kids reading problems and have it over with. In reality, learning to read – especially for learning disabled students – can be a long and difficult struggle. Nonetheless, it is worth sticking to it.

If your child is having a problem learning to read, it is crucial that you get him or her tutor. Above all, do not go to one of the big learning centers. The best places to learn to read are small, independent tutoring clinics. Learning to read from the big factories is almost always a mistake. They tend to teach out of a book, and are not able to tailor their programs to individual children's learning styles. As a parent of a student having trouble learning to read, you need to understand as quickly as possible that there is no simple answer to your child's learning problems. Only through a combination of strategies will your child successfully learn reading.

Unfortunately, a lot of parents make bad decisions at crucial stages. If your child is having trouble learning to read, the longer you wait, the worse things get. He or she will feel stupid, hopeless, and worthless. I have even seen kids give up learning to read because they have little success with the programs their parents try.

Getting Kids To Play With Learning Toys

Picture yourself, if you will, as a child experiencing the middle of summer. It's that time of year when the soft threat of school looms over a child's head, almost destroying the lazy days that they have grown used to. Your biggest worry might be what teachers you will have soon, or whether your sister will leave you alone during an upcoming slumber party. It is a magical, happy time, full or wonder and endless confusion about how the world really works.

For many people, the above scenario is one that they wish they had never left. Adulthood can be difficult, and thus there are times when one wishes to escape to just about anywhere else. But being a kid wasn't just about fun, games, and supposedly unfair parental rulings. In order to succeed later in life, a child must be educated; this is not an endeavour that most of them would be enthusiastic about. Therefore, if you want your offspring to learn what they should at certain crucial stages, without realizing they are learning, you should consider educational toys.

These exercises should start when they are very young. Perhaps, as a toddler, you should present them with simple toys that help them grasp the concept of colours, shapes, and so on. At this stage, they will see them as nothing but something colourful and interesting to occupy their seemingly endless free time with; the concept of education will not enter their minds. Make sure, however, that any pieces of the toy are not so small that they could be easily swallowed. Throw away or hide anything of this description that you do find.

As they grow older, it will be a bit more difficult to get them to interact with learning toys. As this is true, you will have to become clever in what you give them. Do not pressure them into playing with these specific toys; you may quickly find that they will rebel and refuse to have anything to do with them at all. Instead, sneak them in with their other playthings, and see what happens.

With technology always changing, there are always new innovations when it comes to interactive toys. Some come in the form of video games, while others integrate a lot of sounds and stimulants to keep their attention. When truly successful in its goal, the child may know that they are supposed to be learning something, but they will not care. But this does not mean that you should drive to the nearest store and buy everything you can grab. The educational toys you purchase or receive as gifts should complement the child's personality. If you know something will never get their attention, don't bother with it.

It is a fact of life that children and toys go together naturally. So if you want certain milestones to be met in their life, you must consider investing in the entertainment that will get their brain thinking; even if they are not aware of it. You may replace one for another as the years go by, but never doubt that they are important. Remember to mix these options with more physical activities, such as biking or swimming, and your offspring will have the perfect balance of body and mind. What parent would not want that? They are our tomorrow, and every step must be taken to get them on their way.
