How did Starbucks get its name?

In 1971, an English teacher, a history teacher and writer started a coffee roasting business in Seattle.

It’s not surprising that such an intellectual group would have an affinity for classics like Moby Dick. In fact, Starbucks was nearly called Pequod, the name of the whaling ship in Moby Dick. Thankfully, one of the partners rejected the name. Instead, they went with Starbucks, the name of Pequod’s first mate.

Although Starbuck was a fictional young quaker from Nantucket, there were a number of real sailors from that era with the name “Starbuck.”. Naming a coffee company was’t the first time the name was borrowed either. There is an island in the South Pacific, a popular region for whaling, called Starbuck Island.

Starbuck Island was heavily mined for phosphate in the late 1800s and many ships were wrecked there. The high frequency of shipwrecks was probably caused by the reefs that surrounded the island, but there is a mythical explanation too.

In Greek Mythology there are seductresses who lure sailors to shipwreck on the coast of their islands. These mythical creatures are called Sirens and the Starbucks logo contains one.

Please don't be ashamed of Uttar Pradesh yet. Congress ruled the State for the Majority of the duration Pre Independence to Post Independence.. from 1939 to 1989 ( barring the Periods of Emergency.. Thanks to your Grand Mom Indira G. and a couple of transitional Governments)

8 out of the total 14 Prime Ministers of India have been from UP, 6 out of those 8 have been from Congress...

I think your party had more than half a century and half a Dozen PM's to build a State...

The Reason Mulayam Singh, subsequently came to Power is because your party wasn't exactly Gandhian in their dealings in the State.. So May be If you look at in totality the present chaos in UP is the outcome of the glorious leadership displayed by Congress in UP for about 50 years!

Most of us have been to school. Many of us have been to college. Some of us have been to graduate school. And few of us go on to get a PhD. So what is knowledge?

I throw this question open to everyone. We learn a lot of things when we study in school. But many a time, we learn much more through our experiences than our books. So if you were given a choice, between selling your experience or selling what you learnt in educational institutions (assuming both cost an equal amount of $1,000,000) which one would you choose? Then comes the question of who deserves to know what. A lot of the people who are doing their undergraduate degree in India have a feeling that they are not where they want to be. Many get frsutrated with their stream of study. Sadly very few realize there are no barriers that prevent you from gaining knowledge. True, being an engineering student, you might not get to study finanace in as great a detail as the finance student themselves, but no one will stop you if you wish to acquire that knowledge. No one's going to stop you from reading the same books they read. No one's going to stop you from learning from the same teacher as them (unless the teacher himself doesn't wish to grant you the knowledge you seek). Thats the funny part about life. We complain about being stuck with a choice (sometimes for the next 4 years and sometimes for our whole life), but little do we realize that we have the power to control it.

I don't wish to digress into talking about controlling your destiny because the paragraph above may imply that. What I would like to mention is how we accept what is given to us rather than seek out what will not be given to us. Since I'm from an engineering background, its better if I talk about engineering students. India is probably one of the few countries in the world, where so many intelligent students decide to choose an engineering stream after 12th even before they know what each stream offers. Many of them realize that they did something wrong for 4 years and try to correct that with an MBA. Many do engineering just to do MBA after their bachelor's as they believe it's a good combo. Many like their stream so much they go on to pursue a masters and doctorates and then there's the vast majority which wonders what they are doing studying in a particular branch. So often we wait to find out what we like rather than proactively seek it ourselves. We wait to see what our branch teaches us, rather than see whats in this world that we find interesting. The point I'm trying to make here is, many a time, an engineering student gets entangled in his branch and fails to see the beauty of other fields. Of course, the common problem is 'lack of time' but to be honest, thats not true. The fun part about learning things that are not taught by your branch is that you will never get tested in it. That knowledge is free for you to accumulate and use as you see fit. And you won't be judged on it. Many students fail to capitalise on this thought process. For example there are so many artists amongst engineers who keep their artistic pursuits only as a hobby. Why doesn't the Indian student break free from structure and regulation to do what he likes. Ofcourse, we all know the answer to that one. But I hope and I look forward to the day, where an engineering student becomes an artist and keeps his engineering degree as a backup, as compared to the other way round as many people choose. I look forward to the day, when a student in a particular stream decides to learn things from other fields, because he's tired of learning only what his teachers teach him. I look forward to the day when the Indian student finally decides to break free of academic structure to seek knowledge on his own and completely fullfill his curiosities.

I bought a Hohner Silverstar Key C Harmonica some months before and I have been playing my Harmonica since then. My Harmonica is Key of C. I am learning some songs on my Harmonica and trying my best to practice them so that they sound natural.

What is ragging?

This post is about the meaning of term ragging and to state clearly who can rag and who cant. What type of ragging can be taken and by whom? Is ragging bad or are the ill effects of ragging bad?

In NIT Surathkal, three final years and one third year have been punished as one year backlog for being falsely implicated in ragging. Sources say that they were brutally beaten by wardens and then locked in washroom for 22 hours. Even after being brutally beaten by the wardens, which has caused them to undergo medical consultation, and later being rusticated from the hostel, they are also punished with academic backlog for one year.

Who has the proof that those guys actually ragged?

Who has given the wardens the right to beat the students?

Is beating someone to the extent which lead them to be hospitalized not ragging?

On the other hand, one guy in PG, who is said to be from Madhya Pradesh committed suicide on this Tuesday.

College is trying to hide these things as they feel that it will spoil college reputation but if it were like this, all the editorial pages in newspapers would be banned and the media would be banned too.

If voice is not raised now, it might happen to you too in the coming years.

Facebook has become the largest social network of the world with more than over 500 million users.

Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook initially for creating a network of a bunch of Harvard students. And its too surprising that it became a big hit in just a period of two weeks and much more students in Boston Area started demanding for such social network. After such a demand, Zuckerberg and his friends Dustin Moskowitz and Chris Hughes started working on it and after four months, 30 more colleges wereadded to Facebook network.

The idea of Facebook came in Zuckerberg’s mind from his high school activity. His high school was Phillip Exeter Academy. There in his school, a face book was passed to each student so that they could write their comments in that and which would help know their classmates for the coming year. This school activity idea was brought to internet by Zuckerberg which led to a revolution.

Then they found their first investor Peter Thiel who was the cofounder of PayPal and he invested $500,000 in Facebook.

Facebook kept opening its social network for different high schools and universities and then finally, Facebook started giving access to anyone with any email id in September 2006.

It was heard in summer of 2006 that Yahoo tried to buy the Facebook company for $1 billion and Zuckerberg had made a verbal agreement with Yahoo to sell his company but within a few days, Yahoo’s stock prices went down and it was paying only $800 million so Zuckerberg cancelled the deal. Later again Yahoo put up a bid for $1 billion but Zuckerberg refused and he had earlier too rejected lion with such a deal with Viacom for same $1 billion in March 2006.

Facebook has got to be the 6th website to have most traffic website in United States and top photo sharing website with more than 4.1 billion photos uploaded.

Providing more and more relevant content makes the search engines happy. If you put advertisements on your website, then see if those ads are relevant to what your website is about. If they are really relevant, then they can help visitors in some services that they might require at that instant. Like if I visit a website for booking for vacations in Goa and if I get to see an ad about hotels in Goa (may with some special attractive offers), then I may click that ad and book for the hotel at the same time.

Search engine like the way the website is designed for customers and how it is updated. If you are really paying attention to your visitor’s needs and requirements, then you can trace your way in top search results. But it’s still a game of cat and mouse to play with search engines.

In present time, Internet and Web is not the same as it was before ten years ago. Many new technologies are being introduced and the way of using the Internet has changed a lot. These trends have led to a feeling that Web is entering a ‘second phase’ – a new, ‘improved’ Web version 2.0. It is a type of more social and participatory phase. Its theme is mass participation, where participation takes the form of creating, editing or ranking content

Web 2.0 is an interactive and social Web facilitating collaboration between people. This is distinct from the early Web (Web 1.0), which was a static information dump where people read websites but rarely interacted with them. A Web 2.0 website allows its users to interact with other users or to change website content. Media coverage of Web 2.0 concentrates on the common applications/services such as blogs, video sharing, social networking and podcasting. It represents a more socially connected Web in which people can contribute as much as they can consume.

The term Web 2.0 was coined in 2004 and promptly trademarked by O’Reilly Media. It’s not a very specific term; rather, it’s an umbrella that covers many technologies and approaches. It encompasses blogs and wikis, peer-to-peer file sharing and open source, web services, cost per click and multi-platform delivery.
