Here's Homicide's 2006 album Tha Nekrophone Dayz. This album got 4 stars in The Rolling Stone Magazine (Asian edition) and lots of publicity and it is a great, great album. Hard beats, deep, critical, political lyrics and even though they disbanded in 2007 they still have a large following here in Bandung and the rest of Indonesia, not just in the hip hop scene but in the punk/hardcore scene also. They're all good friends of mine and most of the members are still very active with bands like Eyefeelsix and Trigger Mortis

Sebuah group Hip Hop / Soul / Jazz, yang terbentuk di Bandung pada 27 Agustus 2006 oleh 3 mahasiswa UNPAR kebetulan mereka memiliki misi yang sama yaitu untuk mewakili Indonesia di industri musik internasional. Meskipun seluruh lagunya dalam bahasa Inggris, The Boogiemen keeps the Indonesian essence proudly. Dengan tujuan untuk mengambil Hip Hop Indo ke jalur yang benar (menurut saya ini bukan Hip Hop Indo soalnya tidak ada bahasa Indonesianya sama sekali dalam lagunya) inventing major breakthroughs becomes a top priority for this band and everyone involved. By combining old-school Hip Hop beats, sounds of jazz and guitar distortions gave The Boogiemen a huge responsibility which is to entertain music lovers in Indonesia and even worldwide by providing satisfying and addictive live performances.

“Rap saved my life,” Ice-T says in his opening monologue for Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap, and it’s a statement that defines the entire film. This directorial debut from the rap star isn’t a story about the glamorous lifestyle that its stars often lead, nor one about the notorious violence sometimes synonymous with the genre. His documentary is instead a loving tribute to rap as seen through the eyes of someone who truly cares about his craft.

For anyone with only a casual interest in the genre, The Art Of Rap is a must watch. He uses his relationships with some of its most legendary names – including Melle Mel and Grandmaster Caz – to paint an insightful portrait of rap’s fascinating history. It explores with tremendous vivacity its evolution from jazz and blues, and how it was fuelled by the poor social conditions many black Americans suffered through during the early 1970s.

Even for rap connoisseurs, Ice-T’s film (made alongside music documentarian Andy Baybutt) still manages to be riveting. His charismatic interviewing style and noticeable kinship with the subjects allows a phenomenal access into their psyches that fans will rarely have been privy to. Seeing Nas angrily explain how racism has prevented rap from being recognized as a serious music genre is mesmerizing for instance, as is witnessing the physical anguish Immortal Technique goes through to write a great song.

“Rap saved my life,” and it’s plain to see in Something For Nothing: The Art Of Rap why it will continue to be an important voice for people around the globe. It may not be the definitive guide to the genre – Ice-T’s aforementioned adoration of rap music means he’s unwilling to investigate some of its more controversial elements – but it celebrates both of history and the talent of the music excellently.

If evidence were ever needed to make a case for rap’s consideration as a true art form, this is surely it.
