Emerging Playwrights Present Travelling Light II

Emerging playwrights are gearing up to present their new short plays as part of Aberystwyth Arts Centre's 'Travelling Light II' project.

For the past 9 months a selected group of new writers have been meeting at Aberystwyth Arts Centre as part of a Writers in Residence Project. Working under the guidance of playwright and Creative Wales Award winner, Kaite O'Reilly (pictured), they have developed a series of short plays.

The plays will be presented as rehearsed readings with a cast of professional performers directed by Gilly Adams. Two plays will be shown on each night. A post show discussion about the plays and the process will take place on both evenings.

Tickets for this performance are £5 (£3) one night / £8 (£5) for two and can be booked by contacting the Arts Centre ticket office on 01970 62 32 32 or online at www.aber.ac.uk/artscentre

Travelling Light II will run at Aberystwyth Arts Centre on Monday 16th and Thursday 19th November at 7.45pm.

Professor Ian Clark, of the Department of International Politics at Aberystwyth University, said early signs indicate a “gloomy picture” with little chance of a treaty being agreed at the summit on December 12 and 13.

Milestones of Welsh Democracy

The next Llafur Day School is 'Milestones of Welsh Democracy': from Chartism to the National Assembly.

The Day School coincides with the 170th anniversary of the South Wales Rising in 1839, the fact that in 1929 women were able to cast their vote for the first time, and 10 years of the National Assembly in Wales.

The event will be held in the Senedd, Cardiff Bay on Sunday 8 November. It will be preceded by the Llafur AGM.

11.15 am Llafur AGM

1 pm Welcome: Professor Sir Deian Hopkin (Chair)

1.15 pm Professor Lord K O Morgan ‘ Issues in democratic change in Wales from Chartism to Devolution’.

This seminar is intended to guide heritage managers, education and outreach officers, and museum and local government officers in Wales and further afield through some of the newest technologies available for researching and promoting heritage sites. Conference papers, seminars and practical training sessions will be combined to cover the latest technical survey and interpretation techniques and their practical application in heritage interpretation and education. Anthony Motors Volkswagen is hosting the Timeless Polo Film Festival to launch the latest model of its own timeless classic – the new Polo.

Voting for Aberystwyth’s most loved film takes place throughout October with the winning film being shown on the big screen at the Commodore cinema in Aberystwyth on October 29th.

Cardi Kids Community Site For Children's Clubs Groups & Events

www.CardiKids.com is a community site for children’s clubs, groups and events in the county of Ceredigion. The site has been set up by young mum Emma Prichard who was frustrated at the lack of information about clubs, groups and events she could attend with her baby daughter Elysia.

Connectage offered their services free of charge to design and build the web site for Emma. Connectage.com provides a full range of online services to put the web at the heart of an organisation. They specialise in effective e-commerce, powerful online communities and integrating the web with business. Connectage.com creates great websites in publishing, retail, media, local government and the NHS. Their work on www.cardikids.com has resulted in a fully bilingual Web site resource for Parents and children from 0-19 which shows the clubs groups and events available throughout the county of Ceredigion.

Emma’s husband Al translated the site into Welsh and now together Emma and Al will be updating and adding clubs, groups and events to the site on an ongoing basis. Morris Minor Automobile which took part in the vintage car rally at the Aberystwyth and Ceredigion County Show.

The Morris Minor was a popular British motor car aimed at the family market. It was the work of a team led by Alec Issigonis, who would go on to design (and be knighted for) the successful Mini.

Man Dies After Collision With A Lorry Near Aberystwyth

A 19-year-old man has died after the car he was a passenger in was in collision with a lorry near Aberystwyth, police have said.

The crash, between a Renault Clio and an articulated lorry, happened on the A487 at Pen Cwm Mawr.

Dyfed-Powys Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash, in particular the occupants of a white van.

Aberystwyth & Aberdeen Scientists Collaborate In Zinc Tests

I found this fascinating article today:

Aberdeen scientists are seeking 100 healthy male volunteers for a £1 million study to understand how zinc from food can affect human metabolism.

The research will use breakthrough technology to measure chemical changes taking place within the body as a result of eating different amounts of zinc in food.

Scientists from the universities of Colorado and Aberystwyth will collaborate in the study which is funded by the Food Standards Agency.

Police Appeal For Whereabouts Of Milford Haven Man

Police are appealing for information as to the whereabouts of a Milford Haven man who has gone missing from hospital in Aberystwyth.

Michael Jones is originally from the Milford Haven area. He was a patient at Bronglais Hospital when he went missing and was last seen in the hospital at around 1.30pm on Thursday July 23rd .

Morris Cowley (1919) Vintage Car Rally IMG_4361, originally uploaded by aberystwyth-online.

Morris Cowley Automobile which took part in the vintage car rally at the Aberystwyth and Ceredigion County Show.

The updated Cowley for 1919 had an engine made by the British branch of the French Hotchkiss company, which was essentially a copy of the early Continental unit which was no longer being made. It was the basic model of the Morris two car range of the time with the Oxford, which used the same engine until 1923, having leather upholstery and upgraded lighting as the de-luxe version.
