If you run a hotel for example, and a reviewer complains about broken air conditioning, a reply apologizing for the inconvenience but advising that as a result every AC unit in the hotel is being checked and repairs carried out where necessary will reassure those thinking of booking a stay with you. Likewise, if you run an online store and reviewers complain about high shipping costs, a response advising that an economical option is soon to be introduced as a result of their feedback will give peace of mind for future customers.<br />

<b>4.* </b><b>Encourage the Reviewer to Contact You Directly</b><br />

In some instances, a bad reviewer will refuse to be pacified and may want to respond to your own response. Don’t be drawn into a war of words online in an effort to prove that you are right. Invite the user to contact you directly in order to discuss the matter further. This gives you a forum to put forward your response and means you can offer a personal apology – it’s harder to stay mad at someone with a genuine desire to correct poor service face-to-face than it is arguing with a faceless brand online.<br />

Speaking to the person directly also means you can offer a token gesture for their inconvenience such as a discount on future purchases, free shipping or a free upgrade without opening yourself up to a deluge of complaints from people simply wanting something for free.<br />

A bad review doesn&#8217;t mean doom and gloom, but it does need to be handled appropriately quickly and completely before it has a chance to cause lasting damage to your online reputation. Considered by many as a black hat-type online marketing technique, this process brings visitors to the Web site through a third-party piece of data stored in the browser with or without their knowledge.<br />
<br />
The white paper names the top 10 cookie stuffers based on a list of criteria, including size, reach and traceability of the stuffers. Size must be a minimum of 30 cookie stuffing incidents daily per <acronym title="Uniform Resource Locator - The address used to reach a web site (like abestweb.com).">URL</acronym>. The reach must include at least three or more different clients with affiliate cookie stuffers. Traceability is the ability for Convertro to identify the cookie stuffer. The problem is that many cookie stuffers use blank referring URLs, making it impossible to identify the stuffer by name. Only the publisher ID is available.<br />
<br />
The paper also explains the techniques used to track online activity so search marketers can learn about what Convertro calls affiliate program scams. Attribution marketing techniques and technology for both online and offline channels can capture this type of data.<br />
<br />
Generally, the techniques of the company on the list have several things in common. Merchants pay for clicks they would have received without the help of the affiliate. With the exception of the second-largest cookie stuffer, <a href="http://skimlinks.com/">SkimLinks.com</a>, all other cookie stuffers tap into browser toolbars or plug-ins, according to the white paper. The other common themes include users installing the toolbar in exchange for a revenue share, or cash back; donation to a charity; or coupons.<br />
<br />
Narrowed down from 50 candidates, Convertro names <a href="http://shopathome.com/">shopathome.com</a> as the No. 1 cookie stuffer and Skimlinks.com at No. 2, followed by <a href="http://s3pc.freecause.com/">s3pc.freecause.com</a>, <a href="http://plugin.we-care.com/">plugin.we-care.com</a>, <a href="http://365koopons.com/">365koopons.com</a>, <a href="http://dropsavings.com/">dropsavings.com</a>, <a href="http://socialingot.com/">socialingot.com</a>, <a href="http://deedorgreed.com/">deedorgreed.com</a>, <a href="http://rebategiant.com/">rebategiant.com</a>, and <a href="http://alot.barginmatch.com/">alot.barginmatch.com</a>.<br />
<br />
Aside from identifying the companies, Convertro details the cookie-stuffing method and any known affiliate IDs. For example, at shopathome.com users log in and download a toolbar. The toolbar opens whenever a user goes to a site that is part of the affiliate network, even if they enter the site by directly typing the domain into the browser or through a search engine. The toolbar offers coupons for products on the site. Sometimes the coupons offer extra savings, but other times they are standard offers the consumer would get without it.<br />
<br />
For TrueCar.com, the coupon offers &quot;haggle-free pricing and no cash back. Haggle-free pricing is TrueCar.com's standard offer, according to the white paper.<br />
<br />
On some sites, if the user clicks to reveal the coupon without committing to use it or buying anything, their browser is redirected to a <acronym title="Uniform Resource Locator - The address used to reach a web site (like abestweb.com).">URL</acronym> with the affiliate ID. This is cookie stuffing. The <acronym title="Uniform Resource Locator - The address used to reach a web site (like abestweb.com).">URL</acronym> will read: shop-at-home-video-kohls.avi.<br />
<br />
The known cookie stuffing for skimlinks.com uses a JavaScript tag that turns merchant-related links into affiliate links. The user clicks on a clean link to the site and skimlinks.com JavaScript code redirects the user with an affiliate link embedded. The user is not aware that they have clicked on an affiliate link. In this case, the white paper explains that marketers would have received the clicks for the site visit anyway, even if they didn't rely on an affiliate marketing program.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div>I've been a huge fan of CMS apps for quite some time, and have built many a Joomla &amp; Wordpress site. When they work, they work great, but when things go wrong, it can be a disaster.<br />
<br />
As a bit of background, I was following 'good practice' and upgrading components a few months ago... one of which reset the default behavior of URLS (appended a unique ID to EVERY <acronym title="Uniform Resource Locator - The address used to reach a web site (like abestweb.com).">url</acronym>, and changed <acronym title="Uniform Resource Locator - The address used to reach a web site (like abestweb.com).">URL</acronym> case). It took me a couple of days to notice something was VERY wrong, and a month to fix the damage caused. The site is still suffering in the <acronym title="Search Engine Results Page - The page of results that you see when you search for a keyword on a search engine.">SERPs</acronym> as a result. <br />

And now I have a second component (in which I have 400 entries) that is serving up duplicate content. The Joomla developer can't fix the issue - but he has replaced the faulty component with a new version. It's missing half the features of the original, and I&quot;m not happy.<br />
<br />
So I have decided to go BACK to standalone scripts - will port my 400 entries to a new platform, where I can EASILY add 301 to htaccess (no longer dependent on fancy auto-generated <acronym title="Search Engine Optimization - Actions taken to try to improve placement within search results.">SEO</acronym> components!), and control changes without cache issues, performance lags, etc etc.<br />
<br />
I just wanted to share this experience - when you depend on a CMS, you need to make sure you fully understand the repercussions of changes &amp; upgrades. I can find my way around a script, but I'm not a developer, and don't have the luxury of &quot;extensive&quot; testing before applying a change to the site. Unless you have good support, keep it simple.</div>

I discovered affiliate marketing during my frosh year of college, studying to be an electrical/computer engineer, which I spent most of my free time figuring out how I can both pay for college and use the rest to provide basic living conditions for my family...I dropped out, couldn't afford it. After almost six months I have been studying to build necessary skills, such as understanding exactly what affiliate marketing is and different ways to promote affiliate products, etc. which includes <acronym title="Hypertext Markup Language - The stuff web pages are made of.">HTML</acronym> editing, <acronym title="Cascading Style Sheets - A webpage coding concept that helps separate content from layout.">CSS</acronym>, as2-3, a little XML, and a little graphic design, in addition to continuing my c++ studies which I plan to use as a base to learn Javascript and SQL as well. All which will provide me the ability to build myself into a super affiliate with a self-made traffic generator. However, I am still stumped, even by the simple things, such as deciding what niche I wish to compete in, etc.<br />
<br />
I joined this forum in an attempt to find or be found by an affiliate who would be willing to coach me, not so much hold my hand, but stand behind me and push me forward when I slow down too much. I feel I'm in real need of a teacher...and yet I have nothing to offer.<br />
So if anyone is looking for a worthy student to pass on their knowledge too, I'm the man. Thank you.</div>
