XI IT Programming Tasks

Hello again!
Its time to get the hang of writing meaningful programs. Try the following:

Simple Calculator: Write a program in VB to mimick a simple business calculator, which has buttons for basic mathematical tasks (+, -, *, / and Square-root) and a text box to allow the user to input the numbers which need to be operated upon and the result thereof.
A Basic Paint Tool: Write a program which allows the user to do the basic paint & draw operations on the form. (Each operation will be run/selected by clicking on the corresponding button)

Choose radius using a scrollbar and hence draw a circle (using Circle command) at the point where user clicks the mouse
Draw a square of fixed size (using Line command) from the point where the user clicks the mouse
Draw an arbitrary shape using the mouse as a pen.

A crypting engine: Write a program which takes an input text from the user and then encodes it in the following way (Caeser code): A-01, B-02, C-03, D-04 ... Z-26; so ABHINAV will look like 01020809130122
A Bouncing Ball: Write a program to simulate a ball bouncing as if it is confined to the boundaries of the form, i.e. when it reaches the edges of the form it reflects according to the laws of momentum conservation (i.e. angle of incidence = angle of reflection). To make the ball move, you may draw a filled circle and redraw it with background color OR you may use a image of a sphere as a ball and move it using the 'top' and 'left' properties. To judge if the ball has reached the edge you should know the pixel boundaries of your form, i.e. if it is 1000 x 1000 or 3000 x 500, etc. (for this use the width property of the form object)
Generate Pascal's Triangle: Write a program to generate Pascal's triangle on the form. It is the arrangement of coefficients of a binomial expansion. (see the description and second diagram on wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascal%27s_triangle) You may limit the rows of the triangle to be up to 6.
Addition of Matrices: Write a program which will add two 3 x 3 matrices whose elements should be taken as inputs in 2 sets of 9 text boxes. (each set arranged like a matrix) Can you upgrade this program (ignore the form) to deal with a larger matrix?

XI IT Assignments - Controls: Events & Properties

Hello Programmers,
Run through this tutorial cum assignment to get a hang of various controls, their properties and the most used events associated with these controls. Try the following and send me the answers or the codes (zip all files - frm & vbp - and send) on the mail id: events@abhinav.ac.in

Form
This is the most basic control. You have already seen some events on this object.

What is the sequence in which the events Activate, Load & Open occur? To find out, write a simple code for each of these events to display a msgbox saying that the event has occured. Now run the program. One by one the messages will popup showing you what happens and in which order.
What does the KeyPress event do? To find out trap this event, i.e. write a small code at this event, say like - MsgBox "Hello". Now run the program and try pressing a key ...
What do the MouseUp and MouseDown events do? Trap these events like described above and find out the difference between the two states of the mouse buttons - Down (pressed) and Up (released). Be sure to write different msgboxes (i.e. saying something different) for each event. Maybe you can also try the following - instead of msgboxes, print something different on the form for each event.
How can you change the background of the form from within the code? At form_click write a code to change the property of the Form.BackColor property (mind the dot between Form and BackColor), i.e. set the value of Form.BackColor to something new. Run code and see
What do these properties do - WindowState, Caption & ControlBox? To find out ... write a code at Form_Click which changes the value of these properties (one property at a time). To guess which values work, look at the property in the Property Sheet which pops up when you right click on the form and select "properties".

TextBox

What does the PasswordChar property do? You can either write a code like the ones above to modify this property at run-time or set different values at design-time and then run the program to see what happens.
How does the MultiLine property work? You know how to test a property by now ...
How are the Enabled and Locked properties different? Try setting the values for each in turn and see what happens? Each property has two possible values, so you have to try out four combinations.
What if you trap the Change event and run a msgbox when it occurs? You know how to trap events ... just write a code for that event of that object. In the code write a simple msgbox to say something.
How do the GotFocus and LostFocus events work? Trap them and find out ... You can trap them at the same time as two different codes (one for TextBox_GotFocus and one for TextBox_LostFocus)

Online lecture assignments for XI Sc

Hello Programmers,
To use this medium effectively, refresh this page every 10 min or so for as long as the lecture is in session, since I will update this post time and again. You can also try coming in on NetMeeting (if that works) by reading the instructions on our web.

Here you go:

Given three numbers a, b & c you can find out which is the largest of them by comparing each number with the others in turn. Can you do this in a program? The logic goes like this:

1. Take a, b, c from the user

2. Is a > b and c ... then a is largest

3. Is b > a and c ... then b is largest

4. If none of the above, then c is largest

Now what will you do if you need to find the largest among say a 100 numbers??? Can the same logic work?
Using arrays makes life better while computing large data. So try this logic

Take the numbers as inputs into an array having an appropriate size, say 'n'
define an arbitrary high value - max - maybe 0
Run loop from 0 to n
In each iteration, check if the i'th element of the array is larger than max
If the ith element is bigger than max, change the value of max to the ith element
at the end of the loop you get your value in max

Will give you more assignments with arrays and using the File commands by the evening. Try them over the weekend.

Assignments for XI Sc - IT

1. Simple Controls

A. Write a program to take the price of raw materials A & B from the user and hence compute the cost price. Show the same to the user in a box and then calculate the selling price with 20% profit added to the cost price. Show the same in a separate box. Use four text boxes and name them properly

B. Now add a button to the earlier program so that you can run the calculations when the button is clicked and not at Form_Load or Form_Click. If you dont know about buttons ... look below

C. Now add a check box (called AddProfit) to the earlier code / form. Hence change your code so that, it will add the profit to the cost price, only it the AddProfit box is checked (i.e. there is a tick mark in it) else, it should simply show the cost price as selling price

About Buttons:

Use the toolbox you see on the left, OR open the same from the spanner & hammer icon on the top. Click on the plain rectangle below the "A" icon and to its right. Then drag and drop on the form to make the button. In the code window create a code for the button (which by default is called button1) and for the event Click, .... i.e.

About Check Boxes:

The toolbox has a symbol of a box with a tick mark. Click on it and then drag and drop on the form to create the control (i.e. checkbox). If while the code is running, the box is clicked upon and it is blank, it takes the value as true and shows a tick mark. If the box already has a tick while the program is running, it will become blank and its value becomes false. You can use the value as follows in your code:

2. Diagnosing Loops and Branches
How will the following program work. Go over each line step-by-step like the debug feature of VB and fill up the table below with the values of the variables as the loop goes over different iterations

Problems in submitting PDF Answer sheet

To submit the answers to the EE AIO, you have to do the following

Make sure you have Adobe Reader 8.0 and above. If you dont have it, download it. If you have already entered data into the answer sheet, try further steps - else, write down your answers somewhere and redo it with the proper version.
Enter your details and answers in the PDF you download from our web site
Do Not Save the PDF. Its of no use.
Click the Submit button
It asks for email application to use - Desktop App / Internet Mail / Other. Choose Internet Mail
It tells you to save a data file in XML format on your hard disk. Save it and remember the location
Close the dialog box, keep the PDF open. (Once you close it your data is gone)
Go to your email website, like GMail or Hotmail ...
Compose an email to exam.abhinav@gmail.com
Write the subject as EE_IX (or XI) and roll no
Attach the data file (.xml) you just saved to this email and send it

About the EE paper

There is some glitch in the EE paper for Std XI. Apparently there are more questions than there is place in the answer sheet.
I have modified the answer sheet to accomodate 40 questions. So write all the answers as numbered and the teacher will sort it out later.
Note that some diagrams are not in the paper, but rather connected through a link on the net.

What is the sequence for the events given below and when do they occur for the given object?
a) Textbox - Change, KeyPress, KeyDown, Validate
b) Command button - Click, GotFocus, LostFocus, KeyPress

Draw an equilateral triangle (should actually look like it) whose one vertex is the point at which the user clicks on the form.
