Diwali is around the corner and no surprise the slot has been taken by Yash Chopra’s SRK starrer JAB TAK HAI JAAN. On paper, this movie ticks all the right things including the music by A R Rahman. We will have to wait and see how good the movie is.

Challa is a sweet Punjabi song in which we can see SRK strumming the guitar though not very convincingly. The song is in the key of Am with relatively easy chords which can be played in open shape. Go ahead try out the song and let me know how it feels!

I am back with a new song that beginners are gonna love! All of you who have now got a hang of Basic Open Chords, this song will be a nice addition to your list of “playable songs”. In the key of Em, this song uses open chords C and D only. Moving between these chords should also be very easy.

The Punjabi song, sung by Ayushman himself, has a very nice and crisp strumming pattern. It involves couple of UP strokes at equal intervals. Here goes the strumming pattern:

So, how many of you loved the movie Rockstar? Loved it or not, you can’t really dislike the awesome music by A R Rahman! Amongst all the wonderful songs, the one that stands apart for me is Jo Bhi Main which essentially captures the crux of the whole movie very well.

The song revolves around one of the Jazz chords, Em7 – E minor 7th chord, although the song is by no means Jazzy . (Is it just me or has A R Rahman recently used 7th chords in quite a few of his songs?) Another interesting chord is C6. Other than that it uses basic open chords like Gmaj and Dmaj. So beginners can easily play this song.

So how do you play this Em7 chord? Here is the chord representation. Pretty simple. Hold the (very easy) Em chord with your 1st and 2nd finger. Now put your pinky (little finger) on the 2nd string, 3rd fret. Hit all the strings as the root note is open 6th string. Sounds nice? That’s Em7 chord.

C6 chord? Again very simple. Here’s the chord representation. Hold the regular Cmaj chord and just lift your 3rd finger from the root note, 5th string to get the C6 chord.

Now that the chords are done, what about strumming pattern. The pattern that works for this song is this:

This strumming pattern works for the whole song. You can ornament the pattern by adding more strokes at the end to make it sound richer.

The first month of the year 2011 comes with a beautiful song by Pritam sung by Sonu Nigam (original) and Naresh Iyer (Reprise) from the movie Dil To Baccha Hai Ji.

Pritam has used his trademark arrangement pattern for this song as well but still, listening to it feels like a fresh breath of air. The movie itself is getting good reviews.

Hello everybody,

Regular readers would have noticed that the blog hasn’t been updated for quite some time now. And there is a reason for that which I would like to share with everybody.

Since past few weeks, I have been planning a bike trip to one of the most beautiful and dangerous locations on Earth – Leh / Laddakh – Heaven for bikers. After lots of researching and planning, I am glad to tell you all that everything is in place and I, with one of my office mates, will be embarking on this grand trip from tomorrow, i.e., 24th June, 2010.

This song is a beautiful fusion of classical suitar with the beautiful strumming of acoustic guitar and a spray of electric guitar here and there. It’s a very short song which has been sung superbly by KK. I love his voice! Strumming pattern is very similar to the one used in Aye Khuda.

If you want to avoide barre chords, you can use a capoe on the 4th fret and play simple open chords. It is given below.

Aye Khuda is a nice little composition with simple chords which any beginner guitarist can play with a few hours practice. Make sure you add it into your list of songs for practice. More importantly, practice the strumming pattern which is not very tough if you are comfortable with rhythms.
