Dependent Factors - Calculation of GATE Marks, Score, Rank & Percentile

The following article showers light on the various dependent factors on which the calculations of GATE Marks, Score, Rank & Percentile are based. I have collected this data from various reliable sources and have compiled it in an easy-to-understand way so that you can have a clear idea about the intricacies behind these terms that decide your fate in GATE.

GATE Marks
Depends on :
Number of Correct answers, Number of Wrong answers
Working Formula :
+1 or +2 for each correct answer &
-1/3 or -2/3 for each wrong answer; depnding on the question type.

GATE Score
Depends on :
GATE Marks(m), Average marks in your paper(a), Standard deviation of marks in your paper(s), Average (global) marks in all papers since 2007(ag), Standard deviation of (global) marks in all papers since 2007(s)
Working Formula :
Score = 10[ag+sg{(m-a)/s}]

So note, GATE Score depends on not just your performance but also on 'performance of candidates of your same paper this year' plus 'performance of candidates of all papers since 2007'.

GATE Rank
The dependent factors regarding calculation of GATE Rank are not disclosed by the GATE organisers. Also it revolves in the air that the working formula is changed every year. No matter what but the probable factors would be like :
Your GATE Score, GATE Cut-off of your Paper, Sectional Cut-off parameters, if any (Not sure. It may be a rumour.), Number of attempted questions, Section-wise marks etc.

GATE Percentile
Depends on :
GATE Rank(r), Number of Candidates in your paper(n)
Working Formula :
Percentile = [(n-r)/n]*100

Note:
Two candidates of same paper can have same Marks, same Score & same Percentile even, but not all 3 same together. Whereas, two candidates of same paper can not have same Rank.
So, GATE Rank is the only stream-wise criterion which determines an absolute differentiation of candidates.

SetUp Eclipse CDT using MinGW for Windows

The standard Eclipse CDT IDE (for C/C++) needs integration with the GNU toolchain, before you can start making your C/C++ projects in Eclipse (the world's best Open-source IDE, Integrated Development Environment). This includes GNU's make, gcc compiler, and gdb debugger utilities. For windows, MinGW and Cygwin are the two main platform choices for acquiring the toolchain. It is important to note the difference between them. Cygwin produces executables that use the Cygwin POSIX runtime. MinGW produces native Windows executables that do not require a separate runtime.

In this tutorial I'll show you how to setup Eclipse CDT using MinGW toolchain in a Windows Platform.

1. Install MingGW Offline Installer (mingw-6.3.exe , 7-zip Self-extracting Archive) in the C:\ drive.
- The Installation Folder Structure would be like...

Android Offline Installation Procedure (Windows)

In this tutorial, I'll show the 'Android Offline Installation Procedure' for computers on a Windows Platform which do not have a direct Internet Connection.

1. Install Android SDK Manager, Revision 16.
- The Android SDK Tools Package is the only package that gets installed.

2. Close the Android SDK Manager & Go to the SDK Installation folder "C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk".

3. In the sub-folder 'platforms' extract the contents of the Android Platform (Android Platform 2.2, API 8, Revision 2). You may need Windows Administrative Privileges.
- The SDK Installation Folder Structure would be like...
"C:\Program Files\Android\android-sdk\platforms\android-2.2_r02-windows\"
*ant\
*data\
*images\
*skins\
*templates\
*tools\
*android.jar
*build.prop
*framework.aidl
*sdk.properties

- Now Start the Android SDK Manager, you'll see that one more package (the Android 2.2 SDK Platform package) has got installed. Close the Android SDK Manager.

- Click 'Apply' & save the changes.
- Goto Windows -> AVD Manager.
- Create a 'New' AVD, Android Virtual Device.
- Close the AVD Manager.

Facebook scam

Recently a Facebook scam message chain has spread over the most popular social networking site FB, which claims that as Facebook is becoming overpopulated, they are deleting inactive members & further to prove that your account is active, you need to copy the message and send it to a minimum of 15 of your friends within 2 weeks.

Well this is nothing but a hoax mail, so don't carry on the chain. Don't let the scammers rule Facebook. Official Facebook will never ask you to do such to prove the activeness of your account. They have other means to check so, you know well, i guess. All this is nothing but a Facebook noise to increase traffic on FB servers, & to see how far the spam can spread. They do indeed, are benefited by this.

Well friends, it was really tough for me to design the full form of ABHINAV based on my blog's niche indeed. After a lot of permutations & combinations, my grey cells finally ended up with
'A Blog Hosting Intra-engineering Notions of Academic Ventures'.

The word 'Abhinav' is Indian word which means 'new' or 'novel'. So, it was rather a necessity that it's expanded form must mean something near to its original meaning & also must reveal my Blog's niche based on my profile as a blogger. After all, being an Abhinav this Abhinav wanted an abhinav expanded form for the word Abhinav, concealing the Abhinav'ness of Abhinav the Prince. Hope you understand.

Java for Dummies

Nowadays, the amount of excitement Java has generated, may get you the impression that Java will save the world or at least solve all the problems of the Internet. Not really. Java's hype has pushed it far beyond of its capabilities, and while Java is indeed new and interesting, it really is a programming language with which you write programs that run on almost any platform, yet designed. While in this respect, Java is closer to popular programming languages such as C++, Visual Basic, than it is to a page description language such as HTML, or a very simple scripting language such as JavaScript.

Specifically, Java is an Object-Oriented Programming(OOP) language developed by Sun Microsystems. Build after C++, the Java language was designed to be portable(Platform-Independent) across Operating Systems, both at the Source and at the Binary level.

Now to learn Java there are plenty of Books, but the problem most of the students face is that most of the books are written in a style such that the reader has to have a hand or some experience in programming in some other language like C++. Hence, I beleive the book 'Beginning Programming with Java for Dummies' by Bary Burd, Wiley Publication is the best book for learning Basic Java for those too who don't know C++ that well.

Get SMS alerts of your Emails on your cellphone in real-time

I recently discovered a trick used by some on how to get message alerts of our emails on your mobile phones & that too in real-time(soon as they happen), and also without any rentals to cellphone operators.

All you need first is to have a Windows Live Id or a Hotmail account. If you don't have it then click here to create a new Windows Live account. Note, When you open a Windows Live Account you automatically sign up for a hotmail account too. So, go on, sign up for your account & get back here, I'll wait. Got it? Great. So, let's move on.

Next, you have to forward all your Emails (or those you wanna have SMS alerts for, using filters) from your main Email account (like Gmail, Yahoo mail, Rediffmail) to your Windows live Account (xyz@live.in).

Note:-

If your main email account is already Hotmail only, then you don't need to do this.
If you don't know how to forward Emails from one Email account to another then click on this link 'Forward mails from one email account to another in real-time'.

    Now, just login to your Windows Live Account or hotmail account & configure your mobile/SMS settings option in the account's General Options section.

    From now onwards, any mail you get in your main Email account will be forwarded to your mobile as an SMS. Enjoy.. Moreover, you can also reply to the mail via SMS (Normal charges applicable).

Forward mails from one email account to another in real-time

We all have multiple email accounts for different purposes & its time-consuming & worth troublesome to keep track of all of them, if you don't prefer to use an Email client software like Mozilla Thunderbird. The best solution to this is to aggregate all mails into one main account and manage this account for all your personal, professional & social mails at one place.

Also many of us prefer Gmail (the top player of Email world) only. So I've decided to put up in this post on how we can forward our mails from a gmail account to our preferred email account.

Suppose we have one gmail account with Email Id as old_g@gmail.com & we wanna forward our mails to to the preferred account i.e. new_pref@xyz.com then...

For Gmail users only
Goto Settings --> Forwarding and POP/IMAP
Then in the 'Add a forwarding address' section provide the new forwarding email address ( i.e. new_pref@xyz.com) and click on 'Send verification instructions'. Now follow the instructions thereafter.

Other users
Generally Mail Forwarding options can be found in Settings /Options section of any Email providing interface. Any problems ask me.

So now whenever you'll get a new mail in your old account, it will be forwarded to your new account in real-time(soon as they happen) & you'll get it in your new account as if they are sent from the original sender to this account of yours.

Don't ignore your Hard Disk maintenance.

Are you really ignoring? If yes, then the life span of your hard disk is decreasing each day, & sooner you'll be facing the blue problem of Hard Disk Crash which may lead to a nightmare if worse conditions so prevail that Data Recovery becomes impossible even with Recovery tools like Pandora Recovery.

Hence, there's a need of some routine maintenance of hard disks for fast, smooth, & healthy performance. The heuristic part is that every OS offers maintenance tools, but a handful of Enthusiasts use them.

Here, I'll discuss about 2 predefined tools in Windows OS viz.
Disk Cleanup & Disk Defragmenter.

Disk Cleanup
Almost every activity you do in a computer (from installing applications to updating them or just surfing), involves creation of temporary files which causes the disk to fill up & also causes fragmentation of data. Some programs don't even bother to delete them. Hence, Windows provides this disk cleaning tool.
Goto Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup
Now just select the drive you wanna clean, then you are given a few options on what to clean. Select the ones you may prefer & click OK. That's it.

Disk Defragmenter
With the size of apps & other media getting larger these days, their regular use causes fragmentation (Dispersed arrangement of memory elements) of files on the disk. Obviously, this slows the access to the files. Hence, this tool re-arranges the memory elements to increase their contiguity for a faster access time.
Goto Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter
Now select the drive & analyze for fragmentation. If defragmentation is required, go ahead & start it.
There are also some Third-party good defragmentation tools like IOBit Smart Defrag etc. which you can use with more features like Scheduled defrag, Auto-defrag etc.

Note: You should run a Defragmenter once a week for optimum results, coz Very frequent use may damage your hard disk.

Recover Permanently Deleted Data (Shift+Del or Empty Recycle Bin)

Today I will share a trick for newbies on how to recover lost data, deleted permanently using the Shift+Del scheme or Empty Recycle Bin scheme in Windows.
Well, when you delete files like this, the files never get Permanently deleted (though Windows says so, Misnomer). It still exists on the hard disk. This is termed as 'Data Remanance'. The file names only are deleted from the system directory. Hence, you can use a wonderful freeware tool called
Pandora Recovery to recover the mistakenly deleted data. Note, there are many such tools but this one is one of the most simple to use with a user-friendly GUI Wizard.

Best 5 Download Managers for Windows

Of course, nowadays, one might not ask why not just use a good Web Browser to download files. Well, Web browsers cannot split up downloads into segments or threads like Download managers. Hence, I tested some of the download managers to deliver this post on the Best or Top 5 Download Managers.

The test was based on the following features, I looked for.

Resume support
Mirror Search support
Flash Video download
Prioritised downloads
Categories downloads
Bandwidth allocation
Browser Plug-in
BitTorrent support
Scheduler

Free Download Manager (FDM)
As the name suggests, it's free and with possibly the most features I have seen including the above ones. It has an Easy-to-use GUI with small RAM usage about 15MB.
FDM supports BitTorrent Protocol & also comes with an Upload manager. It has a unique feature called Community Options to get or give comments/feedback by other users, on files you are downloading. The bad part is that Flash Video download feature is a bit quirky.

Orbit Downloader (Link)
Another freeware, with simplistic approac. It doesn't have a BitTorrent support, FTP support or a Video converter like FDM but is one of the best Flash Video grabbers. It has a filter system to set the file types that are allowed or not to download. Also, the best part is that it uses only 4MB of RAM.

FlashGet (Link)

It used to be a freeware, but is now free. It has some additional features like Categorised Download, Scheduler & even a good monitoring filter. It has a Site Manager which functions as an FTP explorer. The worse part is that it uses a high amount of RAM about 32MB.

Internet Download accelerator (IDA)
It's a shareware with 5 variable speed limits. IDA has its own FTP Explorer & more user-friendly than FDM. IDA can download Flash video but doesn't have a video converter like FDM. Also no BitTorrent protocol support .

Internet Download Manager (IDM)
It has got almost good features, but it's not a freeware. It has a better browser integration through Plug-ins than FDM, but unlike the latter, it lacks features like BitTorrent support, Remote Access, Community support & Video converter. If you really want to pay for a Download Manager than use a freeware, then IDM should be the choice. It only uses 6MB of your RAM.

So, now it's upto you to decide which one suites your requirements the best.

Today I, here, will share about the various Linux Distros & the Distro Evolution Graph. Firstly,

What is a Distro?
A Linux version or Distribution is commonly referred to as a Distro.

How many Distros of Linux are there?
Currently, there are more than 360 Linux Distros, with different releases, offering wide range ofspecific & generic purposes.

Which are the most popular Distros?
Some of the popular distros are Ubuntu, RedHat, Fedora, Debian, OpenSuse, Gentoo, Puppy Linux, PCOSLinux, Mandriva, OpenGEU, Knoppix etc. with the 1st three being the most widely used.

Now, let's get into the Distro Evolution Graph. Actually Distros of Linux have been around almost as long as Linux itself, & many distros have spawned child, grandchild & even great-grandchild distros. A better understanding of distros can be made by knowing their roots in the family tree as they came from. The following chart is known as the Disto Evolution Graph.

How to Install Windows 7 from USB Drive

Bootable Non-Live way - Only for installation.

Here, I give a short & simple way to install Windows 7 into your system from a USB drive.The benefit you get with this native support for USB installation is that you can easily install Windows 7 on ultra portable machines & netbooks which don't have optical drives and at the same time, the speed you get while installing from a USB drive is much faster than installing it from an optical drive. So why not give it a try.

Follow the following steps to start off:

Windows 7 logo

Take a 4GB (or higher) flash drive.
Plug this drive into a Vista or Windows 7 machine.
Open the 'Command Prompt' with Admin rights by right clicking on the cmd icon & selecting "Run as Administrator".
Type in 'Diskpart' (without quotes) & hit Enter.
Type 'list disk'.

This will show you the number of disks connected to your machine. See which is the one with 4GB space.

Now run the following commands assuming that the disk name is disk 1, else replace disk 1 with the correct number for your disk.

Diskpart>Select disk 1
Diskpart>Clean
Diskpart>Create Partition primary
Diskpart>Select partition 1
Diskpart>Active
Diskpart>Format fs=ntfs //This will take time
Diskpart>Assign
Diskpart>Exit

Now copy all the content from your Windows 7 DVD to this pen drive.

And it's done. Enjoy a fast installation experience.

Note: The commands only work in Windows Vista or Windows 7.
