Arpeggios in Guitar

Arpeggios is a great form in music.
The word arpeggio (ar-peh-jee-oh) comes from the Italian word 'arpeggiare' which means 'to play harp'
You will learn arpeggios in intermediate stages on your learning process. Its a great way to add color to your playing, basically arpeggios is a broken form of chords simply notes of the chords played individually not strummed together.
In arpeggios you have to play only the chord notes on a particular chord,

Example - In G major chord you have to play the arpeggios form only using the notes G B D

In Cm chord you have to play the arpeggios form only using the notes C D# G like this.

In guitar major triad and minor triad are most common chords for playing arpeggios. When you are beginner in playing arpeggios always start with the root note and end on the root note that means start on the low pitched root note, play up according to the time signature then go back down then back up to the root note.

Arpeggios can be played in ascending, descending order or randomly.
Arpeggios can be played in different time signature and in different speed, arpeggios can play in slow style and also fast style and for more improvisation arpeggios are played with the passing note its sounds very beautiful and its add more color on your playing. Passing note means suppose your playing C major chord, in that progression you have F major chord on the next bar then what you can do.. You can play C D E note individually before hold the F major chord but remember one thing you have to do this on time whatever the time signature is you have to maintain the rhythm.
You can play arpeggios in different ways like alternate picking, sweep picking , tapping, finger picking , pull off, legato.

At first start play slowly gradually you can add speed on the fast arpeggios pattern, practice hard and daily for best results and practice until you are totally confident and controlled on the playing.

Barre chords or full shape chords is a pattern of a chords form in guitar and other
string instruments. To hold the barre chords place your index finger flat across the neck and press all strings. In open Chords there are open string in shape but in barre chords there is no open string all strings will be hold with proper finger shape of each chords and the index finger are place across the neck. Basic chords are 3 types major, minor and dominant seventh. Chords Construction

A chord is a combination of three or more notes play simultaneously.
The combination of the three notes is based on a formula that is called Chords formation formula.
There are various notes combinations are possible for many chords, so identify easier each chord receives a different name.
The notes in major and minor scales have specific names that is called Scale Degrees. They have a number and a name both.
Scale Degree numbers
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

Name of the scale degree
• Tonic.
• Supertonic.
• Mediant.
• Subdominant.
• Dominant.
• Submediant.
• Leading Tone
Scale degrees have these names because the names indicate their function and also their position to each other on the scale. Just like the tonic is the primary note or called root note and the subdominant is below the dominant note, and leading note leads to the tonic note.
For learn about chords formation formula you should learn major and minor scales notes properly.

Chords Categories

1) Triads Chords or Three Notes Chords,

Triads Chords or Three Notes Chords

Triads or three notes chords are major, minor, diminished, augmented and suspended chords. Triads are exactly 3 notes, major, minor, diminished, augmented and suspended chords play with more notes its simply doubling some of the notes, that means you are playing same note on different octave, just like in C major chord you are playing C note on 5th string 3rd fret and 2nd string 1st fret both note is C but this C note is in two different octave.

Seventh Chords

Seventh chord is a 4 note chords that have
tried notes plus seventh degree above the chords root. Seventh chords usually means a dominant seventh chord, when major or minor not specified.
The most common seventh chords are major 7, minor 7, and dominant 7.

How seventh chords look like

C7 = C dominant seventh
CM7 = C major seventh
Cm7 = C minor seventh

Extended Chords

Extended chords are ninth, eleventh, and thirteenth, these chords are considered the extended chords. Just notice one thing that ninth (9),eleventh(11), and thirteenth(13), are same two(2), four(4), and six(6). That means in scale C, the 2nd and 9th note both are D note, 4th and 11th note both are F note, The 6th and 13th note both are A note. So, now you can ask
that if 9, 11, 13, notes are same as 2, 4, and 6 so why we are calling 9th, 11th, 13th. The reasons behind this is when you use extend seventh chords then that is called 9,11,13, the 7th is the highest degree of a seventh chord they are extended with higher numbered notes.
If you know the major scale notes then its a very easy to understand the chords formation formula.

Major Chords Formula

1st note or tonic, 3rd note or mediant and 5th note or dominant, you can shortly written 1-3-5 degrees of a scale.

Example

First chose a root note, such as C

Now apply the chords formation formula which is written above
As per formula first, third, and fifth note of the major scale create a major chord.
So C major chord has the notes C E G.

Extended Chords Formula

Extended Chords uses is very occasional in music. Mainly rock and pop musicians use extended chords. Extended seventh chords formation is a same way like seventh chords. We are ascending in order that's
why we are using the names 9th, 11th, 13th
instead of 2nd, 4th, 6th.
You will see one thing on 13th chord that is 7 notes when guitar have only 6 strings,
So what will you do?
You simply omit some notes by yourself
and another guitarist should play the omit
notes that means for playing 13th chords
you have to need two guitarist together.

Minor Scale Formation

In music theory minor scales means three scales pattern or three type of scale.

1) Normal minor scale

2) Harmonic minor scale

3)Melodic minor scale

Minor scale have unique relations with the major scale, that is called relative minor. In Staff notation relative major and minor scale share same key signature.
To build a minor scale go to the 6th note of the major scale and start to build 8 note scale from that note, you can get the 6th note of a major scale either going 6th step up or ascending from the tonic or root note or 2 steps down or descending.
So C major scale and Am minor scale share same key signature, G major scale and E minor scale share same key signature.
Natural Minor Scale
Natural minor scale is a diatonic scale that is built by starting from 6th note of its relative major scale.
So A is relative minor of C major and conversely C major is relative major of A
minor. Every major scale has a relative minor, which start from the 6th note or 6th step of any major scale.

Example - 6th note of F major scale is D

So F major relative minor is Dm

Harmonic Minor Scale

The harmonic minor scale has the same notes as the natural minor scale except that the seventh note is raised by one semitone or half step up, create augmented second between the sixth and seventh note. Harmonic minor scale 7th to 8th note is leading tone the tonic because it is a semitone lower than the tonic, in natural minor scale whole tone lower than the tonic.

Whole Step and Half Step

Whole step or full tone and half step or semi tone is the distance between the two notes.

Semi Tone or Half Step

Semi tone or half step means distance from any note to the very next note, semi tone up means half note higher then the previous note and semi tone lower means half note low from the next note.

Full Tone or Whole step

Full tone or whole step means two semi tone are put together. Full tone up means two semi tone higher than the previous note and full tone lower means two semi tone lower than the next note.

The only naturally half step or semi tone are between

E -F and B - C

E - F and B - C is semi tone distance. Between these two pair of notes only have semi tone or half step distance, all other pair of notes are full tone or whole step distance.

Example

C to C# is semi tone or half step up and C# to C or Db to C is semi tone down. C to D is full tone

or whole step higher and D to C is full tone or whole step down.

On guitar each fret distance are semi tone distance and two fret distance are full tone or whole step distance. First fret to second fret distance is semi tone or half step distance and first fret to third fret distance is full tone or whole step distance.

On piano each key whether it white or black is half step or semi tone apart from the next key.
The distance from the first white key to in between black key is semi tone or half step distance, and the distance from the first white key to second white key with a black key in between two white keys is full tone or whole step distance, only there are no black key between E-F and B-C.

Key Signature

Key signature is a set of sharp flat and natural symbols placed on staff in musical notation. Key signature are written just after the treble clef beginning of the notation. They can also written in other part of the notation after the double bar line. Key signature means the particular note should be played higher or lower than the corresponding natural notes and its continue till the end of the notation or up to the next key signature. The sharp symbol on a line or space means that particular note in all three octave should be played one semi tone high from the natural note that means if the sharp symbol is written on fifth line that is F note then you have to play F# in the notation and that is also called Scale G major. If sharp symbol is written on Fifth line that is F note and third space that is C note then you have to play all the F and C note sharp in the notation,

and that is called Scale D major.
The flat symbol on a line or space means that particular note in all three octave should be played one semi tone lower from the natural note. If the flat symbol is written on the third line that is B note that means you have to play Bb in the entire notation and that is called Scale F major.

If the flat symbol is written on third line that is B note and forth space that E note
that means you have to play Bb and Eb
that is called Bb major scale.
If there is no key signature that means all notes are played on their normal position or natural that called Scale C major. In C major scale there is no sharp or flat note.
If any others note should be played sharp or flat except key signature in any notation then the sharp or flat symbol should written before the particular note.

but EF and BC are written closely, that means there is a note between C D, and that note

is C# between D E and that note is D# between F G that note is F# between G A that note

is G# between A B that note is A# and E F and B C is written closely because between

E F there is no E# and between B C there is no B#. E# and B# are not in music.

explain but when you write notation the sharp sign appears before the note that is to

be sharp not after the note. Remember to use correct finger for fret.

In musical notation there are five main types of notes that have different timings of playing duration

Music is made up with sound and gap or hold the resonance. Notes will tell you when to play and the rests will tell you when not to play.

This symbol called Treble Clef

This symbol called treble clef. This symbol is given in the beginning of the notation.
It means which music is written after this symbol that can be played in all treble instrument,
not only in guitar. Treble instrument means guitar, violin, harmonica, saxophone, sitar, sarod, etc.
In piano and keyboard treble clef part played in right hand part after the middle C note

Time Signature

Top Number Indicate – How many beats in a each bar, and

Bottom Number Indicate – What kind of note gets the beats.

Barlines

According to the time values barlines is given in the notation.
Barlines are given to play the music in strict rhythm, without
barlines there will be no strict rhythm that is called adlibitum
or adlib.

Basic finger exercise

Finger exercise is very essential for build coordination between right and left hand.

Proper fingering and picking and controlled on playing is very vital.

although a little difficult at first but daily practice makes you perfect and give you total control needed for play the guitar effectively.

Always practice with an even steady rhythm and not try to play fast the main target is control on playing.

When you achieve total control on this exercise then try to speedup gradually. Do practice this exercise until you have total control on the fingers and can be played without hesitation and both hand coordination will be perfect.

How to Read Music

Music written on a staff which have 5 horizontal line and the gap between two lines called space.

The lines comes from down that means first line comes from down to up. Below the first line called

bottom of the stave line and similarly on the above of the fifth line called top of the stave line.

There are also have line on above of top and below of the bottom called ledger line

Musical notes are written on this lines and spaces each line and space of the stave has different

alphabetical name called notes. musical alphabet have 7 letter A B C D E F G. Music is read from left to right just like a read a book.

Memorize these note names and their playing position. When the notation write
then the note name and playing position will not be written, you have to identify
the note only by their placement on the stave.
The first three fret of guitar called nut position and these notes are written in nut position.
These same notes can be played also in others position that will be explain later.

Guitar need to be tuned before playing. There are three main ways to tune guitar. You can tune guitar using electronic tuner or can tune listening with your ear and can tune with keyboard.

Tune by Electronic Tuner

Electronic tuner comes with in built microphone for tune accostic guitar and for electric guitar you can directly plug your instrument cable into the tuner then follow the directions of your tuner. Electronic tuner is easy to use and accurate way to tune guitar.

Tune by ear

Tuning using your ear it is a advance process. You have to judge the pitch of the note by listening the note, its need some time for the beginners.
For tune with ear at first you need a reference E note from any other instrument then match the pitch of E note with first string open E note, then play E note on 2 string 5th fret and match with first string open E note, then play note B on third string 4th fret and match with open string B note on 2nd string then play note G on fourth string 5th fret and match with 3rd string open G note then play note D on 5th string 5th fret and match with 4th string open D note then lastly play note A on 6th string 5th fret and match with 5th string open A note.

How to Hold Guitar properly

Sit down on a chair, your feet must be on the floor. Put the waist of the guitar on your right leg (if you are right handed) and back of the guitar must be touch your body. The neck of the guitar should be horizontal to the floor.

Put your little finger on the soundboard over the pic guard the most common way. No need to press hard. Hold the plectrum between your thumb and first finger and plectrum and thumb should form a angle.
