I drew on this T shirt for my sister yesterday. She saw something similar while out shopping but couldn't afford so got a T shirt from Primark and handed me some paint and a permanent marker.

Havana Arts Festival

2012-05-05T14:07:00.001+01:00

For this illustration brief we had to design a poster for the Havana Arts Festival 2012 and redesign the logo for Havana Club who would be sponsoring the Festival.

Arkitekt Magazine Design

2012-05-05T13:42:00.001+01:00

For this typography brief we had to design 2 double page spreads and a cover for Arkitekt Magazine. The first double page was a news spread containing 5 different articles and the second was one long article. We had to use our own images so that we could art direct them ourselves.

Children's Picture Book Illustration

2012-03-11T22:54:00.000+00:00

The current brief for illustration is children's picture books. We have do complete a single and double page spread for the Book Moon Rabbit by Natalie Russell.
One of the first thing that I wanted to do was to see how a child would draw a rabbit. So I went to the school where my mum works and asked the Reception class to draw me a rabbit (In return I had to draw a golden coach to help the learn about the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and then got roped into sticking pasta on it and helping paint it!). This is a small selection of there drawings.

I then started to create my own rabbit character.

I decided then that I wanted to try and create a 3D rabbit.

The bottom rabbit is the one that I chose to use.

I then made a "set" for each of the pages that I had to illustrate.

These are the final images that I will use once I have added the text.

London

2012-02-18T22:48:00.000+00:00

On Wednesday afternoon I went down to London with my Mum and sister. The main reason for going was to see the David Hockney Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Art but as well as this we went to see The Lion King at The Lyceum Theatre in the West End and did some general wondering around London too.

The Lion King. Such an amazing show everything was great the costumes, singing, acting, set design, choreography and make up.

The David Hockney Exhibition was also really good and I was so glad that I had the opportunity to go to this exhibition. There was such as good collection of his work all together.

Working around London there was so much graphic design and typography.

Fortnum and Masons. Exterior and Inside.

We also when to the Ripley Believe It or Not Museum. A Horse made out of plastic utensils, Debbie Harris created with a Cassette tape, Envelope with hidden message and a dress made out of toilet paper.

These are the final designs for my CD Cover Design.

Experimental Typography

2012-02-08T23:59:00.003+00:00

The new brief for typography was just 2 weeks long. In the first week we had to use elements from the Radio Times to create three sets of three A4 more visually interesting layouts.

For the second week we could use any magazine to create two A3 layouts.

CD Cover

2012-02-07T19:18:00.001+00:00

The new brief for developing illustration practise is to design a CD cover front and back. We could choose any music that we liked. The music that I choose was Laura Marling and Mumford and Sons collaborating with the Indian Dharohar Project. This is a mixture between contemporary British Folk and Indian Folk music.

The idea behind the first image was trying to and show both the British and Indian elements. The first way that I thought of ding this was with animals due to the fact that the wildlife of Britain and India are so distinctly different. In the first image the British wildlife is on the left or the West facing the Indian wildlife on the right or the East.
The second image is the same as the first only this time the wildlife is coloured based on the flag of the country that it is from.
For the third image i created a similar piece to the first only this time the animals are more stylised in there form. I wanted to do this to show the contemporary element of the music.
The fourth image is the same as the third but this time in a similarly way to the second image I have used the colours of the countries flag only this time just an outline which I think works much better that the full colour.
I also looked at the different instruments used by the British folk artists and the Indian. In the fifth image I used water colour paints an a thin fine liner pen to outline the collection of instruments. In the sixth image I used a similar style as before in the placement of the images and used the brown fine liner again.
In the last image I was looking at ways in which I could add typography to the cover.

New Visual Communication Skills

2012-01-22T14:47:00.002+00:00

The new Visual Communication Brief is Inside/Outside Letterforms. We are to photograph letter forms from interior and exterior environments which will be put into a sequence of about 30 images.

Digital Layouts

This shows some of the development of my layouts for my double page spread for the first half of the brief.

Story and Character

2011-11-14T20:56:00.001+00:00

This is the story that I have written about Lady Wulfruna for my zine dps. It's fiction very loosely based on the tale of Lady Wulfruna.

It was a dark time in 985, Harold Bluetooth and his cronies were at it again. What were the people of Mercia going to do? Well there was one person out there that maybe, just maybe could help them… and her name (yes HER name) was Lady Wulfruna.

Bluetooth’s gang, the Vikings, attacked hard, pillaging innocent villages. It didn’t take long to find them. Just follow the trail of mess, destruction and fire, and everything that went along with it, mainly the screaming and crying. It pushed her forwards.

It wasn’t long before she caught them up, but she had to do this right. She had to use her three strongest powers against them, lady-ness, beauty and most of all wealth. Three things that they didn’t have.

It was a hard fight; there was many of them and just one of her. But they couldn’t over come it her power was too much. They knew it was over and had to retreat, Bluetooth himself was the hardest to win over but once his protective shield was broken he was just as easy as the rest. It was over.

As she walked back through the villages the crying stopped, the fires stopped, it all came back together. Her power of wealth was working extra hard. Nobody noticed her as she walked through but she didn’t mind, her job was done.

As a reward the king gave her a grant of land but she couldn’t accept such a gift so in turn she gave it to a local church. This land would one day become the centre of Wolverhampton.

Character.

I have am planning on testing photographs that I took of the Lady Wulfruna statue but also have created an illustration using Adobe Illustrator of a stylized Lady Wulfruna. I have then altered the colour simply in Adobe PhotoShop. The top image is the original, the second image has a filter and the third is using the sepia effect.

Zine Introduction

2011-11-14T18:23:00.001+00:00

As the next part of Typographic Fundamentals brief we have to create another dps for the introduction to the zine.

I have found this part of the brief easier. I think this is because I have more experience with layouts and because the words were given to us which made it easier for me to visualise how it could look on the page.

Zine Ideas

More ideas for my double page spread (dps) for the zine.

Editorial Brief Continued

2011-11-12T22:55:00.001+00:00

So the editorial brief...

Research on Mars and its surface.

Experimenting with media to create the effect of Mars surface.

Traditional collage technique using painted backgrounds and magazine images as well as papers to at details.

Computer collage using the same images from the magazines.

Using one of my initial ideas and editing the background to change the colour of the planet from black and white to reds.

Using a similar idea to my initial ideas to create a final image.

Newer Illustration Brief

2011-10-29T22:06:00.001+01:00

The new brief for Applied Illustration Practice has moved on from children's illustration to editorial illustrations. The article that we have been given is called Why to Avoid Getting Pregnant on the way to Mars.

These are some of my initial ideas based on the article using collage with assorted papers and images from magazines.

Final Illustration

2011-10-29T21:53:00.000+01:00

This is the background for the final illustration for Skelllig.

Using collage and image transfer.

The finished piece.

Illustration: It's getting there!

2011-10-15T15:41:00.002+01:00

Continuing on the Skellig brief I have yet more experiment.

These images above use just a normal collage technique (cutting and sticking) to add a bit more detail to the scene.

These images however use an image transfer method. I uses white acrylic paint which i them placed printed images right side down in to the paint (shown in the image at the top of this section), after letting the paint dry the paper can carefully be rubbed away to leave the images. This technique works well for this brief as it does not leave a perfect image so links well to the worn used feel of the garage.

Graphics!

2011-10-14T22:03:00.000+01:00

Finally got round to uploading some graphics work!

Some layouts for my typography modual.

New Illustration Brief Continued

2011-10-10T17:31:00.003+01:00

So I've been working more on my new illustration brief. Looking at collage and continuing experimentation with stenciling.

New Illustration Brief

2011-10-08T20:15:00.001+01:00

So in Applied Illustration Practice we have had a new brief. Similar to the last brief however this time we can use colour and are producing a whole page illustration. This brief is using an extract from the book Skellig by David Almond.

So researching I looked in to tea chests and thought about that reclamation yard near where I live, Les Oakes and sons in Cheadle Staffordshire.

I then started to look at the text on the tea chests. I produced this look using a stencil hand cut from card and the LetraSet LetraJet with ProMarkers.

Had a bit of a mishap on the Skellig on accidentally pressed the trigger on the LetraJet. Oops!

I'm Back

2011-10-08T20:02:00.000+01:00

Been really busy because I went home last wednesday, but I'm back now. So what's been happening, well, a lot really.
Finished off the first Applied Illustration Practice brief.
