This watch may be a sleeper hit in the watch world - and one of my favorite Marvin watches in their current collection. It has the feeling of a classic sport chronograph watch - but in a modern package. Sized large at 44mm wide, the steel case feels solid while the leather strap feels soft. Looking at the various colors on the dial, I am reminded by one of my favorite sport chronograph watches that are no longer made. The Zenith El Primero Rainbow. The name was a bit deceiving, as it didn't have THAT many colors in it, but enough to make the dial stand out more. The Marvin M103 watch shares that look. Most of the dial is black with the steel tones, while there are splashes of red, white, and yellow.

You also get the classic looking framed chronograph subdials, while the seconds subdial is not framed in a white ring. This is done for style (to remind of a bi-compax layout), but is also there to help keep your eyes on the right dials when you are using the chronograph timing function. Using the chronograph is easy with the large classic shaped oblong pushers - while the wider and flatter than usual crown is also retro inspired. You'll love the Marvin crown logo that looks embossed into the watch crown. On the other side of the case you'll find an engraving of the initials of the original founders of the Marvin brad - a detail you find on all Marvin watches.

Having a thin polished bezel gives the M103 a large look given the 44mm wide case. The sapphire crystal is raised and nicely beveled. A look that is common in Marvin watches. For another piece of brand identity you can see the red number "8" on the watch dial, as well as the color of the reserve side of the leather watch strap. Like all nice Marvin watches. the strap has a really high quality made buckle - again with the Marvin logo. One reason that I keep mentioning where the Marvin logo is placed, is because many watches that don't have these "signed" piece feel too much, as though they are made from sourced watch parts (this is especially the way I feel when I see a watch strap buckle without a brand signature on it). Marvin has the feel of a more brand dedicated product that isn't part of a common parts bin. Thus you get this special attention on the crown, buckle, and on the back of the strap.

Even though the watch is retro and sporty, it is still a nice watch. And with that comes some requisite polish and shine - which I like. I am going through one of those "check out my watch" phases, and I like a little sparkle. This is a trait that Marvin is good at, and the brand certainly has it down when it comes to presentation. From the packaging, to the advertising, Marvin does a fluid job at making you feel good about getting and owning their products. Still, I need to remind you that the watches aren't available in the US, but they will be soon I predict.

Usability for the watch is good. The chronograph like I said, is easy to read. The hands of the watch could use a little bit of a size increase maybe. This is always a tricky thing. Because if you make the hands on a chronograph watch stick out too much, they obscure the chronograph, and if they are too thin, they are hard to read. The lume on the hands is thin, but existent. The Marvin M103 is not the best timepiece for night viewing, but it is manageable. The watch case is water resistant to 50 meters - enough for a watch like this. The matte black leather strap is a good match for the character of the watch, and tapers from 22mm wide at the lugs down to 18mm near the bottom for comfort. Tapered watch straps tend to be more comfortable to wear - which is why Rolex has been doing it for year with most all their metal bracelets.

Inside the watch is the an automatic Swiss ETA Valjoux 7750 chronograph movement. The hard workhorse movement is the gold standard for mechanical chronograph movements in many watches. It has a 12 hour chronograph, day, date, and a 46 hour power reserve. You can see the movement through the watch's exhibition caseback window.

For me, the M103 watch is a good all-around timepiece, with a price of $2,400. With a good mix of sport and formal style, you can wear the watch with jeans, shorts, suit, or a black leather jacket. I feel that the watch exudes a sense of practicality and being functionally minded. Its non pretentious, and genuine. A watch like this makes you approachable, and also communicates that you are tasteful and enjoy nice things in life. I personally like the watch a lot and certainly enjoy wearing it.

I am about to discuss modified Rolex watches more often. I have been fascinated by this concept for a while and it is about time I delved deeper into this world. There are really two major types of Rolex watch modifications. One is modifying new Rolex watches, while the other is modifying older or vintage Rolex watches (usually Submariners and Daytonas). This is the Pro-Hunter Military Single Red DeepSea. It is one of the former varieties of Rolex modders (there they secretly buy up new Rolex watches to do their mad scientist work on the watches). Pro-Hunter starts with a Rolex DeepSea Sea-Dweller, and ends up with this interesting result. What I like is that the watch is immediately noticeable as a Rolex, but has its share of little differences that give it that "pimp my Rolex" vibe.

One thing that is interesting is that Rolex apparently hates these watches. I've been told that if you have a modified Rolex watch, never send it to Rolex for servicing (they might not exactly send it back the same - and with a "restoration" bill). Chew on that. Not such a big deal though as Rolex movements are famously easy to work with. I sometimes ask watch makers their favorite movements to repair or work on, and "Rolex" is often the answer.

A big trend on modified Rolex watches is to make them black. Why? Not sure. Black is a hot color, and Rolex has no watches that it sells in black. A color such as blue or red is often applied as trim. The dial of the watches get some special treatment, and often the modified watches (at least the really good ones, get specially engraved casebacks as well. Some people want only subtle alterations to the designs they love (which would include the Pro-Hunter watches), and others want something a bit more wild (not a mild!).

The Pro-Hunter Military Single Red DeepSea is different than the version without the term "Military Single" in it that it comes with military style NATO straps. The other version has a matching black steel bracelet. There are also some minor differences on the dial. The black applied material is DLC (diamond like carbon). You all know me for going ga-ga over this coating compound for its look and scratch resistance. Here it is done in a nice shiny manner. Pro-Hunter made just 100 of these watches.

Pro-Hunter took a brand new Rolex DeepSea Sea-Dweller Ref. 116660 - which is a great watch to begin with. The watch has a massive 3,900 meters of water resistance is and sized well for a Rolex at 43mm wide. Like all Rolex DeepSea Sea-Dweller watches it has a helium escape valve, more or less perfect rotating diver's bezel that is made in ceramic, and a date window minus the magnifier lens. Don't forget that on these newer Rolex Sea-Dweller watches, the lume glows blue. Pro-Hunter gives it a special, individually numbered engraved caseback. This Pro-Hunter Military Single Red DeepSea collection was made around March of 2009, so they are still fresh. While there are many Rolex modders out there, Pro-Hunter is one of the good ones known for quality results. The price on James List for this hard to find number is about $16,000.

One aspect of watch-making that has made a huge impact on the luxury watch market during the past three or four years has been the materials used. While many companies have focused on high-tech materials, U-Boat's Italo Fontana has been breaking ground with a more traditional metal: sterling silver. The new Classico 925 series is the perfect example of how the Italian watch manufacturer has taken advantage of the precious metal's unique properties to offer its clients rare and extraordinary versions of their popular models.

On their own, or coupled with more modern materials, precious metals like gold and platinum have been linked to high-end watches since the start of horology. Silver, however, has been somewhat excluded from the production of luxury wrist watches for men. The metal has mostly been used on pocket watches and ornamental jewelry watches for ladies. Perhaps this has been due to its inclination to oxidize and low hardness, but thanks to today's obsession with vintage items, the unique look that the silver's "patina" offers works perfectly. Available in November, U-Boat's Classico 925 series consists of the CA925 chronograph with a beige dial, and the A925 with a black a silver dial.

The U-Boat Classico A925 is based on the basic 53mm Classico watches. The case is entirely made of .925 sterling silver and is finished with a fine brushed polish. The A925 is equipped with a thick sapphire crystal and see-through exhibition back that offers a view of the infamous ETA 2824 calibre through a skeletonized silver plate. More silver is present in the dial's numeral and index hour markers. A black plate, placed on top of a silver one, has the hour indicators cut out of it to reveal the precious metal bellow. Basically the time is indicated on what is sometimes referred to a "sandwich" dial. A black leather strap finishes the simple monochromatic look of the watch. Combine this with the lustrous qualities of sterling silver and you got yourself as elegant a U-Boat watch as you can get.

The CA925 is part of the new Classico automatic chronograph collection. These run on ETA's 7750 calibre. This silver chronograph watch is available in 53mm as well as the more accessible 45mm size. The tan leather strap shows how these watches can be dressed more casually. The strap retains its luxurious feel with an alligator leather lining. The "sandwich" dial on the CA925 is made up of a beige plate revealing carbon fiber hour markers.

The U-Boat 925 sterling silver watches are for U-Boat watch enthusiasts, who demand a little extra. They will be produced in limited quantities and, as with the gold Classico models, offer the opportunity of customization with an engraving on the back of the case. The metal's softness and susceptibility to oxidation is an important aspect to note. While some may shy away from a watch that changes color slightly over time, the vintage style created by the "patina" (color created by the oxidization of silver) is the exact reason why many people have chosen these particular watches over their stainless steel counterparts.

Pictures: Two images of the Classico A925 with black dial and silver hour markers, and engraving on its side. Two images of the CA925 with a beige face and with see-through-back displaying the 7750 automatic movement.

A while ago this interesting LED watch was being displayed as a concept in Japan. I talked about it here in my excitement. Myself, and many others got really excited at the concept - though it had a few questionable characteristics that seemed to keep it from being practical. The big issue being power consumption, that I did of course mention. 100% even did exactly what I suggested they do, and that is display the time "on demand." This way you can maximize battery life by only displaying the LED lights when you want to see them (by pressing some button most likely) - saving battery life. Not sure where the button is going to be placed though.

What is so cool about the design is that it is not really a watch, but a bracelet - one that has a hidden display for the time. The concept was very cool and I am happy that it will be available for sale soon. There has been no date announced yet but it should be within the next few months. Prices will likely be $400 and under given its electronic quartz movement and Chinese construction. So neat to see exciting concepts come to life. Thanks again Japan (and 100%)!

This article is about two things. First, about the very nice Seiko Ananta Spring Drive watches (yes they are available in the US), and also about "what you need to know about the Seiko Spring Drive movement." In addition to the Spring Drive version of the Ananta watches, there are also versions of the watches with in-house made in Japan, Seiko automatic mechanical movements. Though I am going to save additional discussion of them for another article.

In a nutshell, if you don't already lust for a Spring Drive watch, you should. Let's talk more about the Ananta watches. The watches are important as they represent the first higher-end Seiko watches that have come to America in a long time. In fact, they are world market watches meaning that they are to be sold globally. The watches are based on the look of Japanese katana swords. No doubt you'll see this look all over the watch from the sides of the case to the hands, and the hour markers. Little katana touches are all over the watch, even on the automatic rotor, to remind you of the "sharp" influence. By the way, when I was in Japan visiting Seiko we visited a traditional Japanese sword maker who still makes the awesome "samurai style" swords. As a kid I grew up utterly wanting one of these (and still do). To hold an actual one in my hands (not just some look-alike) was truly awesome. It took a lot of will power for me to hold back, and not find a watermelon to hack up.

In addition to the blade looks, the watch case also features something that Seiko calls blade polishing. The mirror polished surfaces are done in a special technique that gives them a superior shine and polish compared to most of what is out there. I got to see a little side-by-side discussing the differences and I agree that the Seiko blade polish system is easily superior. The polishing is done by hand, and another touch of luxury that is easy to appreciate.

Ananta watches are big, at 46mm wide (and between about 14mm - 16mm thick depending on the model). Still, the watch fits well, and doesn't slide around. Even on smaller Japanese wrists the watches looked good, and will look good on your wrists too. They make a wonderful statement, are and built just as you'd expect from a luxury Seiko watch. The cases are in a few parts, while the case is secured with screws to the bezel part. Thus, there is no real caseback piece. This allows for the back to be very smooth and curved a bit. The case is further 100 meters water resistant. Plus, to remove glare, the sapphire crystal is anti-reflective (AR) coated.

The bracelet on the watches are really well done. Lighter than you'd expect, but done so on purpose to enhance comfort. Still, the links are all solid and very well polished - they are also close together, with the bracelet having mostly no gaps. The links have interesting beveled edges that increase the sense of style. While the watches have a functional feel, they are the antithesis of boring, and this concept carries over to the bracelet. The bracelet has a push-button locking clasp and a great looking "Seiko" logo engraved on the clasp. The watches are also available with an alligator strap - also with a folding clasp.

The watch is really all about the dial - which looks great. First and foremost for Seiko is function. As you can see the Chronograph and GMT models are extremely easy to use and read. For a simpler look you can go with the GMT model. It has the time, date, GMT hand, and a power reserve indicator. Very clean lines, and impressively bold, yet beautiful. The chronograph model adds a 12 hour chronograph to the mix, with the chronograph subdials being stacked for the easiest reading possible (all the chronograph hands are also red). Let me tell you why Seiko high-end chronographs are the best on the market to use (in my humble opinion). First, the chronograph movements utilize a column wheel and vertical clutch (if you don't know what these are, that is OK, but they are things you want in a chronograph movement). In addition to being accurate (and actually increasing the power reserve time on the Spring Drive watches!) they utilize a "ready, set, go" feature. The chronograph pushers have a two-stage operation. Let me explain this simple but important concept. Press the chronograph start/stop pusher down and you feel a gentle springy resistance until it comes to the first stop. You've just gone from "ready" to "set." Then press down a bit more and you start the chronograph. The chronograph starts precisely when you press the pusher down the second time, without any lag time. This way you start the chronograph at just the right time, and it feels so nice! The second you try it, you'll be sold - I was. It might even make you use the chronograph function much more than normal. The chronograph is also used for the tachyemeter scale on the bezel. That is a function no on uses. A limited edition version of the Ananta Spring Drive Chronograph a clean, bare bezel.

The watch dials themselves are beautiful. A lot of this has to do with the large diamond polished hour indexes. You'll see spots of quality luminant near them on the chapter ring where the numbers for the GMT hand are placed. The hour markers and the hands (also the power reserve indicator strip) reflect light in a wonderful way that give it a prism-like feel. Look closely and you can see little rainbows of colored light gently playing on the surfaces. It is quite impressive. If you've never experienced a Spring Drive movement watch, you'll be impressed with the seconds hand. You know how mechanical watches have a "sweeping" seconds hand, well Spring Drive takes that a step further. I won't get into a big discussion on this, but on Spring Drive watches, the seconds hand moves in the most perfectly smooth manner you'll ever see. Seiko calls this "Glide Motion" hands, and it just means they are buttery smooth in their cutting through time.

I could go on and on about the Spring Drive movements - but I will spare you. They are all hand made and assembled in Japan by highly trained people. The movements are just like mechanical movements, but with a big difference. No escapement. Instead, power is sent directly from the mainspring to the rest of the movement. But there is a catch. The power is regulated by something called a glide wheel the slows down the power moving out of the mainspring. Think of it as a brake. The degree that the power is slowed is regulated by a oscillating quartz crystal. The quartz crystal moves when electrical impulses are applied to it. This electricity is generated right there, from the power moving out of the mainspring barrel. The real trick for the watches was having a long enough power reserve, due to the need of having it generate a small electrical current. It took Seiko almost three decades to make a practical Spring Drive movement. The Spring Drive movements have 72 hours of power reserve on average (closer to 100 hours with the chronograph function activated, opposite of standard mechanical watches).

Each of the Spring Drive Ananta watches have different movements. The chronograph model has a Seiko caliber 5R86, while the GMT has a Seiko caliber 5R66. You can see an image of the 5R86 movements above, as well as a cool diagram with actual parts that I photographed while at the Spring Drive manufacture in Japan (click on that image to make it larger). Seiko Spring Drive movements are accurate to within about 1 second a day (which is pretty much equivalent to quartz movement based watches). So with a Spring Drive movement based watch, you really have all the things you love about mechanical watches with the accuracy of a quartz movement. Oh, and just to be clear, the mainspring is powered by both the automatic rotor or hand-winding via the large crown. In all ways, these movements are top notch from construction to performance. Really the apex of what Seiko is known for.

Hard to think of complaints about the watches. I would have liked for there to be a Seiko signature or logo on the crown, but that is a minor point. Also, the GMT hand is kind of strange to adjust until you get the hang of it. It is totally independently adjustable (thankfully in one hour increments), but the process of doing so is different than in Swiss movements. Otherwise the watches are hard to beat. Even though they are pricey, they are an incredibly good value in comparison to European watches. Retail prices for the Seiko Ananta Spring Drive watches range from about $5,500 - $8,100. Certainly worth looking at if you are a Seiko fan, or just like the looks. Plus, if you are looking for a quality timepiece with GMT and chronograph functionality, these watches are hard to beat. Forgot what you think Seiko watches are if you simply think they are reliable inexpensive watch. There are plenty of Seiko watches that fit into that category, and there is also this new world high-end Seiko watches that you'll soon become more and more familiar with.

Monaco's Horus watches represent the ultimate in rich people talking about rich watches. Pretty much that is only who they care about even marketing to. So consider me learning about these watches against their wishes almost! Maybe I am exaggerating, but brands like this have product launch parties on boats were only select people are invited. Let's put it this way, the brand's mascot is a falcon, and yes they have a real falcon. Only falconers needs apply to hang with the Horus watch crowd. The brand is new, and have a few interesting things. I want to share with you their Horus Ultramarinum (Marine) watches. Obviously meant to remind you of a luxury boat, the dial of the watch looks like the instrument panel of a fine ship, with the deck wood to boot.

Actually all this pomp and circumstance a round the selling and unveiling of watches is a good thing. Horus founder Andre Grossman obviously knows how to put on an impressive show, and if you look at the Horus website, you can tell that he goes after where the money is. See link to the site below. Probably exactly what I would do. Also check out the cool watch box that the Horus Ultramarinum comes in. There is obviously some eletcro machinery at work there. It looks like the top opens and closes by itself. Maybe it is like those fancy trashcans you can get at Bed Bath & Beyond that open with a mere waive of your wrist. Do you think Horus likes being compared to things you can get at Bed Bath & Beyond? I doubt it. Do they have those in Monaco? Would it have marble floors? At the very least we know that you can move the lever on the front of the watch case at it will open. Not just that, but the watch actually lifts out of the box on a pedestal for you to pick up. Get it? Fancy....

Now on to the watch. First, the Egyptian theme of the Horus brand is clear. The name, the bird, the inexplicable need for a pharaoh's fortune to own the watch. I love Egyptiany stuff, so I am glad to see it being applied when possible. The Ultramarinum watches are custom ordered and the dial is design after the instrument panel of the world's older steam boat (full steam ahead!) This boat is the Monaco based SS Delphine, which is coincidentally the ship on which Horus launched the Ultramarinum watch. The case of the watch is in a unique shape that reminds me of those coin operated telescope stands they have at certain public places with a view. Also like older style parking meters. Right? I like the look though as refined and adapted into a watch case. Horus is the only brand that uses compressed carbon in their cases, but this is not an element of this particular watch (that is used in their "Dualis" watch) . Instead, the Horus Ultramarinum has lots of grade 5 titanium. The watch looks gold though. So I am not sure if this is a different model or perhaps a PVD application or gold plating. The case is 48mm wide at its widest point and 54mm tall. The dial clearly is made mostly of a small plank of wood. Nicely done in fact.

Listen closely, cause now it gets weird. In addition to the flying tourbillon in the movement, it has a special complication I've never heard of before. You can speed up and slow down time! Creepy! The HR 1057 movement was made in collaboration with BNB Concept (you should know them). This fact makes me feel comfy that the movement is pretty well made. It has 387 parts and an 80 hour power reserve. Functions on the watch include an off-centered time, retrograde seconds, power reserve indicator, and a chadburn. Using the lever located on the case at about 10 o'clock you can adjust the chadburn to go "faster or slower," just like you would on a steam ship. In the middle neutral position the watch tells the correct time. Move it forward and time will go faster. Move it backwards and time will go slower.

Remember that putting the lever and chadburn back in the middle position will always return the watch to the correct time. Why does the Horus Ultramarinum do this? As a novelty. To time travel, or to make it so that you can look at your watch and say "look at the time. I gotta go," more often and it look later than it is. Trust me, this is a more useful, useless novelty than some I have seen (that means you Franck Muller Secret Hours watch). It is kind of cool as well. Oh, and The Marine watch is water resistant to 200 meters, which is actually not bad given this type of watch. Good if your luxury sailing vessel capsizes. Down with the ship, does not need to mean down with your investment.

The strap of the Horus Ultramarinum watch is all custom, and the customer can get it in any manner of colors, styles, and even with jewels (why?). The smallness of the actual watch face may prevent this timepiece from being an adept daily wear, but it is still a fine novelty for your growing uber luxury watch collection. I really want to see that mechanical watch case in action! Not sure about price, but you know what I keep saying about "if you have to ask.."

Visit Horus's website here for a cool video of the watch.

Last March I was very intrigued by the marketing images of this new Roger Dubuis Easy Diver SED Tourbillon watch with its intense level of skeletonization, in carbon fiber, that looked like tree branches. If you look closely, you can tell that the movement is barley even there. The biggest parts are the one minute flying tourbillon and the mainspring. Surprisingly, the manually wound Roger Dubuis caliber RD 02 SQ3 movement has a 60 hour power reserve (movement bears the Seal of Geneva). One thing that I want to make clear is that the "branches" of the movement are done in carbon fiber - which now makes it clear what you are looking at. I've never seen anything like this before. Like other models in the Easy Diver line, the watch has other carbon fiber sections built in, such as here seen on the sides of the lugs.

The Easy Diver SED Tourbillon is really large and really light. The 48mm wide case is in all titanium an feels light as a feather. Give then fact that the movement is barley there, this fact makes a lot of sense. In addition to the rubber strap with a titanium deployment, there is some rubber sandwiched into the construction of the case. Everything about the watch is very sporty, but also luxurious. Look closely at the slanted chapter ring around the dial - you'll notice that the hour markers are rubies. Very cool in my opinion. There is a sly nature to Rober Dubuis watches that present luxury in an unapologetically pronounced manner, without the pretention that you might expect from a luxury watch company.

A lot of the design ethic of Roger Dubuis watches reminds me of Versace. Both literally and figuratively. See for example the pattern on the sides of the rubber strap and you know what I mean. Roger Dubuis is also humorous with their watches. There is something fun and at the same time sully about the watch. You need to relax and take the piece not so seriously, even though it does have a lot to be impressed with. It is important to appreciate the watch on various levels, technically, horologically, and artistically. You get a hint of this sentiment by the name that Roger Dubuis places on the rear of the watch, "Tourbidiver." The very notion of a tourbillon in a diver's watch is silly, so you need to appreciate it for the humor in the concept. Plus, the watch is a true diver's watch with a rotating diver's bezel, as well as 300 meters of water resistance.

This limited edition Roger Dubuis Easy Diver SED Tourbillon watch has less than 300 pieces out there. Retail price for the watch is about $125,000 - but retailers are making deals! I got to check out this cool Roger Dubuis as one of their authorized dealers here in CA, at Lussori in Carmel-By-The-Sea. A good example of a wild luxury watch from an interesting luxury watch brand.

Hey guess what. You can hear me now (more often than just in review videos) in addition to reading me. John Biggs (of CrunchGear.com and WristWatchReview.com) and I have started a new venture with the HourTime podcast show. We will be doing at least a couple of shows a month, talking about watches, between two watch guys. You'll be able to submit questions, comments, and of course topic requests. For more information, or to listen to the shows, visit HourTimeShow.com.

We just released our first show. It is still a bit rough, the audio levels need to be tweaked so we sound as "delightful" as possible. It is gonna get better from here, and I understand that you'll be able to subscribe to the show on iTunes soon. I'll likely post here on aBlogtoRead.com with each new show. Enjoy.

I can really appreciate this watch from a functional level. Truth be told, I don't think that Bremont had to do too much new stuff to make the Bremont Martin-Baker MB-1 or MB-2 watches as durable as they are. It was more a matter of applying existing techniques to make the watch as durable as it is. The difference really is in the physical testing that the watches underwent to test out their durability. Basically they can survive the uber amount of g-forces you experience when being ejected out of an airplane via ejection seat, and the subsequent jerky ride back to Earth.

The MB-1 model is only given to people who undergo this journey in a real life situation. The MB-2 model is available to everyone else, and is just a little by different cosmetically. Decent looking watches as well, with that now signature, Bremont style.

This watch comes with a great back story. A tale of a man they called crazy. A tale of a man, who probably is crazy, but we can all love him for that. It all started with Romain Jerome and their previous 'lord & ruler,' Yvan Arpa. The watch community generally has the perception that Yvan Arpa is a bit of an... eccentric. One who creates ideas that are pretty wild. Half the time the ideas work, the other times, they most surely don't. One example of a failed idea was an all rusted watch (on the outside) enclosed in a hermetically sealed glass case. The idea was that once the glass was broken, the watch inside was guaranteed to work. To make a long story short, once some wild and wealthy people bought and subsequently broke the glass, the watch did not work at all - having been totally rusted through.

Other ideas do work, such as Yvan's Titanic DNA watch for Romain Jerome. The watches worked so well, that they not only saved the dying Romain Jerome brand a few years ago, but catapulted it into a money making phenomenon with an incredible series of back orders. Flash to July 2009, and Yvan Arpa is forced out of the company by a disgruntled board of directors. Seemingly fett up with Arpa less than conservative personality. He and his managing team were out. The move was very strange, because Yvan WAS the Romain Jerome brand, and without him, the company was likely to wither away once the Titanic DNA concept became stale.

Arpa sued Romain Jerome for wrongful termination, and won via decision by a Swiss court. They found that he hadn't done anything wrong, and Romain Jerome was in the wrong. What his future holds in unknown. What his present holds is this Black Belt watch. Yvan Arpa is known to be a martial arts enthusiast, participating in it himself having a black belt. Perhaps he was constantly threatening to fight (literally) the Romain Jerome board, which is why they freaked out.

Arpa and a few others have collaborated on a new watch concept called the Black Belt Watch. The idea is a watch that will only be sold to people who actually have earned black belts. The watch will be officially launched at the end of October, 2009 at a martial arts fighting event. Black belts who want to buy the watch won't be limited to any specific type of martial arts. Any type will do assuming you have achieved the highest level of expertise. When placing an order for the watch, you need to attach a copy of your black belt award certificate.

The watch is pretty interesting, but subdued, especially for Arpa. It has black belt and marital arts themes through and through. The all-black color is meant to remind you of its influence, as the watch has five different black shapes all over it. The strap is a special textured rubber over calfskin leather (that has been made water proof). The look is meant to remind you of kimono material, or also the material black belts are make of. The watch itself is likely large (Arpa's style), and is done in steel having been coated in black PVD with a satin finish. The bezel has Japanese Kanji numerals as the hour markets. With 100 meters of water resistance and the nice construction, the watch is meant to be relatively durable.

On the dial you'll see the iconic belt and knot from the activity that the watch is meant to honor. The "Black Belt" logo on the dial does look a bit cheesy, you have to admit. At the same time you get the idea. The hands of the watch emulate the look of Shinai, which are wooden swords used during sparring practice in the Japanese art of Kendo fighting. Inside the watch is an automatic mechanical Swiss movement. Which brings up another important point, the entire watch and movement are made and assembled in Switzerland.

One the rear of the watch is the most important phrase. There is engraved "For Black Belt Only," apparently in rose gold. To me, it is a lot like those cheesy hats that remark "I am number 1." At least here it is hidden on the back. If there was ever a watch that was based on emotion, it is this. I don't know how many black belts there are in the world, but if you see someone with this watch, ask them to prove it to you. I suppose the alternative is wearing your black belt on the exterior of your clothes all the time. So to the kick-ass nation out there, get yourself one of these watches. Cause if you went through all the work of getting a black belt, you want people to know! Price for this watch actually isn't too bad given Arpa's track record. You can "apply" to get one for the retail price of 3,000 Swiss Francs.
