Now I'm usually skeptical about any conspiracy theory, especially the ones that are religion-based and the ones that go viral this way. What made me more doubtful was the inscription itself. The font resembles nothing in Arabic, in fact it almost looks like cursive..

If you invert the picture it clearly reads Louis Vuitton!

It seems that either someone had manipulated the picture to create controversy, or that simply - since these appear to be cheap knock-offs - the sole molding was inverted, creating this blasphemous shoe.

كلا ليس العدو الصهيوني الغاشم الذي اغار على محطات الانتاج. انها الدولة اللبنانية المستغشمة التي تتحفنا مرة اخرى بفلم من افلامها.

مؤسسة كهرباء لبنان اكتفت بالقول ان العمال في محطة الزهراني تعرضوا للتهديد فـأحبوا أن ياخدوا off - معليش حرام عم يتعبوا الشباب.

من هدد العمال وكيف؟ لن نرضى بعد اليوم ان نصدق كل مايقال لنا.

للتذكير فقط ان المؤسسة مررت على الشعب الغشيم القصة عينها عام 2007. كيف؟ أتذكرون عندما كانت الكهرباء متوفرة على مدار الساعة (في العاصمة بيروت على الاقل) حين وقعت معركة نهر البارد؟ حينها تحجج المسؤولون ان معمل دير عمار يتعرض للقصف وارتأوا حفاظا على سلامة العمال ان يعلقوا العمل فيه شي جمعة جمعتين ويقننوا الكهرباء ثلاث ساعات في اليوم ريثما تنتهي المعارك. عال، كرمى لعيون الجيش صبر الشعب.. ولا يزال يصبر حتى يومنا هذا..

هل تنوي مؤسسة كهرباء لبنان تكرار نفس الأكاذيب على المواطنين؟ أين وزارة الطاقة والدولة بأمها وابيها مما يحدث؟ هل يجب علينا ان نتعود على الظلام؟

The Beggars of Hamra Street

An old man soliciting money from café goers

Hamra. A street with a unique charm, combining all sorts of places from mosques, to churches, to restaurants, to pubs - a magical amalgam of all sorts of people from the veiled woman to the one with the skimpy outfit, to the.. erm... beggars.
Unfortunately, the beauty of Hamra has been tarnished with those persons who have become an essential part of it.
A year or two ago beggars - if any - used to be the polite kind who would sit quietly in a corner with their hand extended, or the artistic type, like this guy (link) which was at least tolerable. Well, Not anymore. What you come across now is the sort of beggars that actually follow you around and pick on you so much that you're no longer able to sit at sidewalk cafés, shop, or simply go for a walk without being harassed by them. This has become a major annoyance for both shoppers and shopkeepers; waiters at sidewalk cafés are constantly having to shoo them as they relentlessly try to solicit money and on some rarer instances food.

The beggars you see are (un)surprisingly very well organized and seem to collaborate with each other and work in shifts, and they also have people dropping them off and picking them up from their corners using either motorcycles or "service" cars. They are organized as follows:

The woman with a baby: This woman is usually in her mid-twenties to her thirties, with an infant on her hand. I have personally witnessed on several occasions a baby being handed over from one woman to another for use as a prop, so it's not necessarily the woman's child.
The old man/woman in need of medicine: They will usually brandish some prescription to "prove" that they need them - it's almost always fake.
The woman who goes "solo": At first it's not clear why this woman is begging at all - a perfectly healthy young woman who's physically able to work. The truth is that in many cases these women actually prostitute themselves to men with lower income (like van drivers) and use begging only as a cover-up.
The swarm of kids: These are 5-12 year-old kids usually work in groups, selling chewing gum or flowers, wiping your windshield, or just soliciting money. Although they are the bulk of the begging workforce, their gang leaders seem to leave them without food as they are the most prone to accept food instead of money.

I chose Hamra to talk about its beggars because the begging problem has become very pronounced in this touristic area. However, all over the country, the number of beggars have been noticeably increasing over the years and they have been becoming more and more organized. The question is, who's responsible for fighting this phenomenon? I remember that the Lebanese Police has cracked down on them many times but as anything in Lebanon it only lasted for a couple of weeks. My concern here is not just that beggars are unsightly; to the very least the mafias working these beggars are violating many laws and humanitarian rights from child labor, to child abuse, to forced prostitution.

This is where I urge the authorities to take action to tackle this problem, to put these kids in school and put the mothers who use infants as props in prison and take their babies away. Most importantly this is the time to hold the mobs unjustly benefiting from beggars accountable for once. Will this ever happen?

Regardless of the blatant sectarianism still sadly rooted in this county, I would advise owners of projects such as Beit Misk to work more on their PR, people going in and watching is actually good advertisement, la shou bet 7awlo kel shi la mourabba3at amnieh! كنت عم بتسحّر من يومين وإذ بقلب عا محطة حاطّة أم كلثوم..
أنا من يومين اكتشفت عن جد شو يعني الإنسان يسلطن مع إنو أنا بحب الموسيقى و بألف و بعزف وبغنّي عا قد حالي (وعا قدّ إلهامي).. الحاصلو، اول مرة هالقدّ بتمعّن بأم كلثوم هيّ وعم تغني. صدقوني السمع مش متل الشوفة.. مش غريب أبدا كيف كانت العالم تنطر كل ليلة خميس مناطرة لتسمع الست. أم كلثوم كانت هي وعم تغني، تغني الغنية - تتفاعل مع الكلمات، تضحك معها وتنفعل معها وتبكي معها - واللحن كان أصلا لابق على الكلمات. أم كلثوم كانت فعليا تحس الأغنية ومع ان صوتها جبار ما كانت تغني لتستعرض صوتها متل كل المطربين اليوم (راح ارجع للي مش مطربين) بل كانت تغني لأن بدها تغني.
للمقارنة عم جرب لاقي حدا بأيامنا عنده هل كمية التفاعل مع الأغنية.. مين جورج وسوف؟ كتير مابيحبو وكتير مغرمين في بس الاجماع إنه مؤدي ممتاز وأستاذ، يمكن أفضل مؤدي على الساحة بس برضه مش متل ام كلثوم.
الطرب ايام زمان كان كل واحد يغني لراسو. ماحدا ياخدها غلط بس لما ام كلتوم كانت تغني كنت تحس هي والملحن واللي كاتب الكلمات وحتى الجمهور ضاربين بانجو. هلق هني يمكن ماحدا منن ضارب شي بس الحب الحقيقي للكلمة والموسيقى كان الو نفس المفعول.. تصوروا هلق جمهور يسمع أغنية ساعة ساعة ونص وما يمل!

مطربين اليوم من وقت ما بلشت برامج الهواة متل سوبرستار حفظوا كلمة "عُرب" وصاروا كل ما دق الكوز بالجرة بدهن يستعملوا بين كل عربة وعربة، عربة. صار الطرب استعراض عضلات مش للاستمتاع. عندك العرب وعندك من بيقدر يطلع بالطبقات أعلى (آدم مثلا كل أغنية خلص الدمع تبعته ارتكزت على كلمة واحدة "وشفيت" يللي بخرق طبقة الأوزون فيها). أو متل معين شريف اللي أنا بحب صوتو كتير بس لطالما زعجتني في شغلة إنه بس يغني يده بتمشي مع صوته مش مع احساسه. يعني بس يطلع بالنوتة بيدلّ بأصبعه لفوق وهكذا دواليك. مان إنت منك قائد أوركسترا إنت مطرب! شغلة من الشغلات كمان إنو واحد بعدو طالع من برنامج هواة بعد 6 أشهر بـكونوا علموه سولفيج ومقامات شرقيه بيكون جايي عمقابلة بيصير يطلع بقائد الفرقة بـكل ثقة و بـيقلو "عطيني بيات الري وحياتك".. انو خيي فهمنا إنك pro مشينا!

هيدا بالنسبة للمطربين أما اللي مش مطربين فـحدث ولا حرج. بعدني من شي 3 سنين عم جرب اعرف شو يعني بطل شغل الحلبسة!
بعدين أنا هيفا أنا أو أنا دانا.. اهلين ربيع وهبي تشرفنا. أو بخصوص الالحان ال copy-paste من تركيا واليونان؟ يا خيي الاترك صاروا يحكوا سوري ونحنا بعدنا عم نسرقلهن الحانهن!

رح وقف نق لأنو مابعود اخلص بس راح اتركن مع مقارنة بين أم كلثوم و أمال ماهر مثلا ياللي هي تعد من متخصصي أم كلثوم عم بـغنوا سيرة الحب وحكموا بأنفسكم الفرق بالأداء والتفاعل مع الكلمات.

Krateen Ep.1: The Sleepy Girlfriend

Krateen! is a short comic strip which I inspired among other things from my daily life. I'll be posting strips here weekly (well I'll TRY!), every Wednesday. This first strip is about my girlfriend, who keeps falling asleep when we talk on the phone at night. Apparently my voice is too soothing for her to handle :p.

Eating Cheap in Lebanon: Places that will fill you up without breaking your wallet

My friend and I went last week to a certain well-known "Cafe", the "Big" one if you're wondering, and we were charged L.L. 16000 for a bottle of water, some vegetables, and nuts. My friend ordered a L.L. 40000 plate that was very average, and the whole experience was not worth the money.Some restaurants and cafes in Lebanon are becoming so ridiculously overpriced, you could spend your entire salary just to eat out.
There are many places, in and around Beirut, where you can still eat a delicious and fulfilling meal, have fun and still keep your money for whatever else.

Some of the cheap places I know and like are:

Malak Al Taouk (Bliss, Jounieh, Achrafieh, and Furn el Chebbak): One Tawouk Extra will fill you up very well. The sandwiches are huge and cheap (5000 for a sandwich).
Snack Hammoudi (Zkak El Blatt): A very tiny snack with a couple of stools that might drive away the inexperienced, this place however is worth the try (be prepared to eat while standing). Go all the way and get yourself an Escaloppe sandwich with extra garlic (toum extra). Will set you back L.L. 3500 and will kill your hunger for the rest of the day.
Go Tango (Koraitem or Beirut Arab University): Huge portions and very reasonable prices. My all-time favorite is the Zinger which is, well the same to the identically-named KFC sandwich, but around twice bigger. I also like their appetizers (twister fries are a very tasty way to block your arteries :D ). You can have a decent meal for around L.L. 15000.
Falafel Sahyoun (Bechara El Khoury): Falafel is a staple of Lebanese societey, a synonym for being hungry and having little money. While you typically need at least two sandwiches to satisty you, a sandwich is for only L.L. 1500. Best Falafel in town.
Barbar (Hamra or Spears): A Beiruti placemark that everyone knows. I especially love the Shawarma there. Best enjoyed just standing there on the sidewalk next to the ever-present policeman (Darakeh) who will most likely be eating a sandwich himself, but that's another story. Will fill you up for L.L. 10000 or less.

If you're willing to spend a bit more, in the vicinity of L.L. 20000, on a meal and want something delicious to eat I suggest these places:

Napoletana (Hamra): Their pizzas are just moutwatering. Make sure you try the Quattro Staggione and the Regina.
Roadster Diner (Ashrafieh,Jounieh, Hamra,Verdun, and others): The combo Fajitas are awesome, and if you like it spicy try the Cuban 220 burger. For dessert, prepare yourself for a sugar rush wih the Marbeled Mud Pie.
T.G.I. Friday's (Downtown or Jounieh): You absolutely have to try the Quesadillas mmmm. Excellent food quality overall and good service, I also like how they put a piece of peach in the peach ice tea.
Crepaway (Hamra, Furn el Shebbak, or Jounieh): My personal favorite is the Cajun Chicken platter and for desert, none other than the Godfather himself, James Brownie. Did I mention their salads are awesome? Try the Salsalada. Note however that unless you're willing to deal with a swarm of teenagers and preteens never go to the Jounieh branch on a Friday night, or you'll feel like an old geezer in no time.
Burger Nation (Hamra): This one is a new favorite of mine. The meat is of a very good quality, and the buns and ingredients are fresh overall. You can create your own burger (yes, this is the new fad) or order something from what they have. Delicious.
BOB's Easy Diner (Verdun, ABC Ashrafieh and City Mall): OK I was hesitant whether to include this one. You see the food is great but the atmosphere was so-so. Went to the Verdun branch with my girlfriend and the waiter wouldn't leave us alone, always "checking on us", and taking our platters away.. There's something called being TOO nice (khalas ya khayyeh)! Alright I would understand if the waiters did this on a busy day, but the place was almost empty then, they had better left us sitting there instead of hurrying us out; besides they overdid it with the jokes in the posters, and Bob's rules (something along the lines of eat, enjoy, get out!). Anyway as I said the food is great, but maybe next time I'll go to another branch. Try the Ranchero Chicken or the Smoke House burger.

Ok, I really took a long time out this time!I have to thank Ali Seifeddine (@BloggerSeif) for giving me just the nudge i needed when my long break from Abou El Zelof was in the back of my mind for the past few days.
Anyway my previous post سجني الصغير could give you a clue what kind of a hectic lifestyle I've had for the past couple of months; and this is why I haven't been writing lately.
