Normally the onset of Mesothelioma cancer is quite slow. Patients will begin to experience symptoms such as lower back pain and chest pain. These symptoms may also be accompanied by weight loss, fever and difficulty breathing. Unfortunately, once Mesothelioma develops, it quickly becomes aggressive and treatment must be sought immediately.

Can Mesothelioma be treated?

Doctors are able to use several traditional methods of cancer treatment for Mesothelioma cancer, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Like all forms of cancer, detecting the disease at the earliest stage possible greatly increases the patient's chances for survival. If you have worked in an industry such as construction or suspect that you may have been exposed to asbestos, be alert for symptoms and contact your doctor immediately.

Read more here...

View the original article here

How to Learn About the Mesothelioma Cancer Diagnosis Process

Mesothelioma is the term used to define cancer that afflicts the tissue surrounding the body's organs. Mesothelioma also affects the fluid and tissue in the space between organs. This makes mesothelioma one of the more difficult cancers to detect, as symptoms usually don't appear until the cancer is in more advanced (and more dangerous) stages. If you suspect you may have mesothelioma, it's important to begin the diagnosis process as soon as possible.

Understand the Mesothelioma Diagnosis Process:

Expect a CT Scan to be one of the first tools used in a mesothelioma diagnosis. The CT scan is able to process a detailed image of your abdomen to determine

Know that an X-ray is a common first step in any mesothelioma diagnosis process. Although it cannot directly detect the presence of mesothelioma, a chest X-ray is capable of detecting a thickening of the lining of the lungs.

Use the PET scan as another tool to detect the presence of mesothelioma. Although still technically in trials, PET scans introduce radioactive glucose into the body. These radioactive sugars become concentrated in cancerous tissue, although simple scar tissue is known to attract them, as well.

Expect fluid and tissue samples to be taken as a diagnostic tool, although less invasive methods like the CT scan or the MRI are more common.

Know that surgery is sometimes used in the diagnosis process, since it can be difficult in some cases to conclusively identify malignant tissue.

Avoid asbestos at all costs. Asbestos is the leading cause of mesothelioma, so people who are exposed through construction, mining or manufacturing should be tested for exposure on a regular basis.

Overall Tips & Warnings:

Be aware that the Patient Bill of Rights give you the authority to participate in any and all decisions related to your treatment. You can say yes or no to any treatment option presented, as well as any and all diagnosis options that are available.

Ask your doctor to explain the diagnosis process to you in plain English. If you speak a different language, ask for a translator. It's your right.

Stop smoking right away, particularly when facing the possibility of mesothelioma treatment. Smoking is known to intensify the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Continue to abstain from smoking after your treatments are done.

Feelings of depression and anger are quite common in cancer patients. Learn to deal with this flood of emotions by speaking to a religious leader, friend, therapist or support group.

View the original article here

Mesothelioma Cancer - What to Tell Children

What to tell your children if you suffered or been diagnosed with the mesothelioma cancer?

The amount of information you should give them depends on their age and how grown up they are. Being honest is one thing but giving them all the information at once may be too much. Try spreading it out a bit to ease the shock of the inevitable outcome.

Questions can be answered on a 'need to know basis' initially but as more hospital vists are undertaken and the patient is unwell at times then more detail needs to be offered. Getting the same question over and over again from young children can be difficult at times but it should be realised that this is a normal part of their development.

Teenagers may have a particularly hard time as they now have to cope with additional strong emotions and extra responsibilies, as well as the usual emotions which are part of their development into adults. They may need to turn to others outside the family if they find it difficult to talk to family members e.g.family friend, teacher or counsellor.

Grief raises its head everywhere and it is important to reasure children that it is not their fault that this illness has happened. It seems to be common amongst children that they feel they are to blame and these feelings could last for some time.

Additionally, they may need to be put right about what they have heard from friends and other people as it may not be correct.

Children need to be dealt with sensitively but honestly. But manage the communication of information according to age, maturity and circumstances.

Article by:

c) Paul Curran, CEO of Cuzcom Internet Publishing Group and webmaster at Information on Mesothelioma, providing information about mesothelioma and mesothelioma news.

View the original article here

How to Prevent Occupational Exposure to Asbestos

Asbestos is a generic name for a group of dangerous fibers used in the construction business. Asbestos fibers can separate and be easily inhaled, causing considerable damage to the lungs and other organs. Asbestos is a highly-regulated material and many occupational safety measures are in place to prevent exposure to it. Following are some steps for avoiding occupational exposure to asbestos.

Repair the free flowing fibrous area. Many issues arise because the area that contains the asbestos has been damaged and the fibers are freely floating through the air. Repairing the effected area may include wrapping the asbestos, removing it and replacing it with a newer, less harmful substance, or enclosing the effected area.

Wear a HEPA filtered respirator that has been individually fitted for you. There are many respirators on the market to choose from. A dust particle mask is not sufficient protection from the airborne fibers. You should wear a mask certified safe by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Consult an OSHA specialist for more information.

Wet the asbestos when working with it. Wet fibers are heavier and fall to the ground or don't free-flow in the air. The point is to not inhale the fibers, so making the fibers heavy will help prevent this.

Train the employees on the dangers of asbestos. A major part of both the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) is to prevent exposures in the workplace through education.

View the original article here

Mesothelioma Cancer Clinical Trials - New Chemotherapy And Drug Treatments

I read an article few days ago regarding the mesothelioma cancer clinical trials somewhere from the internet. The article was all about studies of new treatments in patients who are diagnosed with the mesothelioma cancer.

These treatments are most often new chemotherapy drugs, or sometimes surgery in combination with a drug treatment. Researchers perform a clinical trial when there is some reason to believe that the treatment under evaluation may aid patients. In general researchers perform clinical trials to determine whether a treatment works, whether it is more effective then existing treatments, whether the side effects are too severe to justify the treatments use, and which patients benefit most from the treatment. At any given time, there are usually between 15 to 20 active clinical trials throughout the world investigating new therapies for mesothelioma cancer. Researchers are conducting more than half of those trials in the United States.

While being treated for mesothelioma cancer, a doctor may suggest that a patient look into a clinical trial. Though this does not mean that the patient has no other hope, the patient should be aware of the risks associated with clinical trials. No one knows in advance if the treatment will work or exactly what side effects will occur.

Researchers conduct clinical trials in steps called phases. Each phase answers certain questions. Clinical trials are usually classified into one of three phases.

Phase I trials evaluate how doctors should administer a new drug (i.e. by mouth, injected into the blood, or injected into the muscle), how often, and at what dose. A Phase I trial usually enrolls only a small number of patients, sometimes as few as a dozen.

Phase II trials continue to test the safety of the drug, and begin to evaluate how well the new drug works. Phase II studies usually narrow the focus to a particular type of cancer.

Phase III trials test a new drug, a new combination of drugs, or a new surgical procedure compared to the current standard therapy. Researchers assign participants to the standard group or the new group at random. Phase III trials often enroll large numbers of people and may be conducted at many doctors' offices, clinics, and cancer centers nationwide.

The benefit of participating in a clinical trial is that a patient can receive a treatment that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has yet to approve and they may be of substantial benefit. Additionally studies have shown that mesothelioma patients that participate in clincial trials tend to live longer and received better care than those who do not partcipate.

For more info regarding this Mesothelioma cancer clinical trials please visit here.

View the original article here

Mesothelioma Cancer Patient's Guide to Nutrition

At some point during our childhood we have all been told to eat our vegetables. Forcing down tasteless green beans and brussels sprouts were supposed to make us taller and stronger. Well, so it is for mesothelioma cancer patients. Diet is often an overlooked subject for cancer patients, but eating the right nutritional foods for strength and energy is just as important as taking the proper medication.

Mesothelioma cancer patients undergoing treatment must follow a special cancer diet devised by their nutritionists. Cancer diets involve eating the correct amounts of protein and calories as well as drinking the right amount of water to keep the ailing body replenished and energized. The body needs plenty of nourishment when it is going through chemotherapy or even when the patient is taking certain medications.

Doctors and nutritionists may also recommend a special cancer diet because many mesothelioma patients tend to lose their appetites due to worry over their condition. Also, those who are undergoing treatment may choose not to eat because of the unpleasant side effects they may experience. Chemotherapy, for example, and even some particular medications may cause an imbalance of nutrients that must be corrected in order to keep the body as strong as possible and to keep the patient from losing an excessive amount of weight. Other side effects of mesothelioma treatment include nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, a change in the sense of smell or taste, and/or constipation.

Below are some of the important nutrients patients are encouraged to include in their mesothelioma diet:

Protein is important for any cancer patient because it helps repair tissue damaged by surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. Protein also helps maintain a strong and healthy immune system, lowering a mesothelioma patient’s risk of infection after aggressive cancer treatments. The National Cancer Institute recommends increasing protein in a cancer diet with cheese, milk, ice cream, yoghurt, eggs, nuts, peanut butter, meats and fish.
Fats are an essential part of the cancer diet because they supply the body with the necessary energy it needs while undergoing treatment. The amount of fats (meaning the number of calories) a cancer diet should consist of is dependent on a mesothelioma patient’s age and body size. The National Cancer Institute recommends increasing caloric intake with such foods as butter, milk, cheese, honey, sugar, granola and dried fruits.
Water is another essential element of the cancer diet. Without a substantial amount of water, the body will dehydrate. It is important that anyone undergoing cancer treatment receive enough water to keep their bodies hydrated and replenished. The details of every patient’s mesothelioma diet will vary. Some patients will need to incorporate more fat into their diets, while others may need more protein. It is important that patients devise a cancer diet under the guidance of their doctor and nutritionist to ensure that they receive the proper amount of nutrients to improve their quality of life.
By Maggie Kay

View the original article here

Signs And Symptoms Of Mesothelioma Cancer or Disease

In this post below we will discuss the signs and symptoms of the Mesothelioma cancer or disease...

Symptoms of mesothelioma cancer or disease may not appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Shortness of breath, cough, and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma.

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and cachexia, abdominal swelling and pain due to ascites (a buildup of fluid in the abdominal cavity). Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia, and fever. If the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face.

These symptoms may be caused by mesothelioma or by other, less serious conditions.

Mesothelioma cancer that affects the pleura can cause these signs and symptoms:

chest wall pain
pleural effusion, or fluid surrounding the lung
shortness of breath
fatigue or anemia
wheezing, hoarseness, or cough
blood in the sputum (fluid) coughed up

In severe cases, the person may have many tumor masses. The individual may develop a pneumothorax, or collapse of the lung. The disease may metastasize, or spread, to other parts of the body.

Tumors that affect the abdominal cavity often do not cause symptoms until they are at a late stage. Symptoms include:

abdominal pain
ascites, or an abnormal buildup of fluid in the abdomen
a mass in the abdomen
problems with bowel function
weight loss

In severe cases of the disease, the following signs and symptoms may be present:

blood clots in the veins, which may cause thrombophlebitis
disseminated intravascular coagulation, a disorder causing severe bleeding in many body organs jaundice, or yellowing of the eyes and skin
low blood sugar level
pleural effusion
pulmonary emboli, or blood clots in the arteries of the lungs
severe ascites

A mesothelioma cancer or disease does not usually spread to the bone, brain, or adrenal glands. Pleural tumors are usually found only on one side of the lungs.

View the original article here

Treatment Of Mesothelioma Cancer

Treatments for mesothelioma cancer or disease depend on several factors such as the location of the cancer, the type of mesothelioma, the stage of the disease, patient's age, the medical history and the general health of the patient.

Each person diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer or disease requires different type of treatment, such as the frequency, the aggressiveness, and the method used to treat mesothelioma.

There are many kind of treatments for mesothelioma cancer or disease, each intending to attack cancer cells while attempting to address symptoms. Often, patients wants to pursue the most aggressive treatment possible at the beginning when diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer or disease. The last possible treatment for mesothelioma cancer is by means of a radiation theraphy.

Radiation treatment or radiotherapy is simply the use of high-energy x-rays that destroy the cancer cells and its surrounding area while doing as little harm as possible to the normal cells.

When treating mesothelioma cancer, radiotherapy may be aggressively used against the cancer cell in cooperation along with surgery or chemotherapy for an effective battle against mesothelioma cancer. If the patient are not well enough for a surgery, then radiation therapy can be used alone as a sole treatment.

Radiotherapy is also used to control the symptoms. This form of treatment can reduce the size of the cancer and reduce pain, discomfort, and or breathlessness.

In our future article we will discuss about the topic of how to cope with the potentially life-ending mesothelioma cancer.

Until then..enjoy your reading!

View the original article here

Treatment Of Mesothelioma Cancer By Chemotheraphy

In today's article we will be discussing the other alternative for treatment of Mesothelioma cancer by means of a Chemotheraphy.

Chemotherapy is a treatment that involves using chemical substances. The chemical substance used in chemotherapy is “anticancer drugs” that works against and destroy cancer cells in the body.

Often, chemotherapy will be administered through the use of injections. The anticancer drug will be injected into the vein. Physicians may administer it directly in the affected area in hope to target the mesothelioma tumor more effectively. If not injections then it would be given in the form of pills.

Please keep in mind that chemotherapy is not considered as a solution or as a cure. It is often used in combination with other forms of treatment to better battle against the cancer cells. The goals of chemotherapy are to control the cancer by slowing down its growth, to relieve symptoms, to shrink tumors, and to destroy microscopic disease that may remain after surgery.
The downside to chemotherapy is the side effects. While chemotherapy seeks out cancer cells and destroys them, it also temporarily reduces the number of the normal cells. It is the damages done to the normal cells that are causing the side effect.

Depending on the type, dosage, and how your body reacts to chemotherapy, the side effects may include the following…

1. Nausea

2. Vomiting

3. Hair loss

4. Weight Loss

5. Fatigue

6. Diarrhea

Hope this article will help readers to better understand the other alternative method of treatment of Mesothelioma cancer.

View the original article here

Treatment Of Mesothelioma Cancer By Surgery

In this posting we will discuss one form of treatment of the mesothelioma cancer, that is through surgery.

Before you consider surgery, please consider your overall health. Make sure your health is evaluated carefully by a doctor. Make sure your doctor have you tested to make sure that you don’t have metastatic disease. Metastatic disease is cancer that spreads to distant area of your body.

There may be an occasion where cancer is only in one area of the pleura, where surgery can be used to cure mesothelioma cancer. Using surgery, it can remove part, or all, of the pleura and tissues closes to the cancer. Sometime, the affected side which involves the pleura, whole lung, and diagram are removed along with the tumor.

Even though you may do the surgery, beware that even surgery may not cure mesothelioma cancer. It is important that you discuss this with your doctor before hand so that you have the full understanding of what is happening/going on with the surgery. Only you can consent the surgery, so please make sure you have a full understanding of what is involved.

Sometime, in order to achieve the full effect of surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy may be involved in order to ensure that mesothelioma cancer is, at best cured.

After operation, sometime it can take many weeks to recover from the surgery. In order to speed up recovery, it is best to be active as possible. If you are required to stay in bed, keep regular leg movements to stay active. To help out with the breathing exercise, a physiotherapist will work with you on this.

Intravenous infusion and drainage tubes will be on you in order to maintain and monitor your overall health. Tubes usually go away when you begin to eat and drink normally and when the overall health improves.

You may feel some pain or discomfort after the surgery. This is quite normal and by making a request to the nurse or doctor, you can control it with painkillers. Be aware that pain or discomfort may persist for few weeks. Be sure to ask your doctor on what to do about the pain.

Mesothelioma cancer patients usually go home 5 to 10 days after the operation. When you go home, be sure to exercise often but gently to build your strength. Be sure to ask your doctor on type of exercises that are appropriate for you. Typically walking and swimming exercise will suffice for those with surgery in the approximation of lungs.

In the next posting we will discuss another form of treatment for the mesothelioma cancer that is by chemoterapy.

View the original article here

Free mesothelioma and asbestos books

Being a very complicated disease, as all types of cancer are, mesothelioma experts have gathered enough mesothelioma information to fill several books on the subject. Asbestos is also a subject that is covered in several books, some referring to its’ qualities, others to the risks it poses and mining techniques.

Available at some shops, these books will mostly cover health related issues. You will probably be able to find several books that clearly explain how asbestos is able to cause mesothelioma, how it can be avoided and how other related diseases can be treated. Here are some examples of such books:
Lorraine Kember's "Lean on Me - Cancer through a Carer's Eyes"Paul Kraus “Surviving mesothelioma and other cancers – A patient’s guide”A general asbestos and mesothelioma book describing how it can be treated or even prevented, available in any mesothelioma center
Support books on lung cancer and treatment options should be able to provide with an insight of some of the details that come with this type of diseases. Cancer patients should consider getting such a book, because, among other vital information, it also provides with stories about other mesothelioma patients and what they did to make their life as normal as possible and not be morally affected by the disease.

Other mesothelioma and asbestos books contain legal information about asbestos litigation and every detail that needs o be attended before filing claim. Books about the mineral asbestos are also available and will provide with detailed information regarding asbestos materials, toxicity levels of the mineral and pictures of asbestos fibers under the microscope.

If you are looking for useful books at the lowest possible prices, try looking for them in mesothelioma treatment centers, charity foundations or mesothelioma and asbestos information bureaus. Even if these location do not have mesothelioma books on sale the people there will be able to provide with contact details to nearest store that provides such books.

It would be an interesting reading material a book on mesothelioma treatments. You will be able to see how asbestos treatment methods evolved and how close we actually are to a cure for this type of diseases.

Please feel free to contact asbestosis and mesothelioma centers at any time regarding mesothelioma and asbestos books. We can recommend some of the best and the lowest possible prices, and we can also provide with details about the way you can purchase them. By breathing in fibers of asbestos, you are increasing the risk of getting the cancerous disease.

At first, the link between asbestos and mesothelioma could not be made because of the long period of time that goes by from being exposed to asbestos to diagnosis of mesothelioma. But a study in South Africa during 1960 made the link between the two.

Many people come into contact with asbestos fiber through either their occupation and or living in at-risk areas.

Examples of at-risk occupations and living areas are as following:

• Asbestos product manufacturing (insulation, roofing, building, materials)
• Automotive repair (brakes & clutches)
• Construction/contractors
• Maritime
• Miners
• Offshore rust removals
• Oil refineries
• Power plants
• Auto Mechanics
• Boiler makers
• Bricklayers
• Building Inspectors
• Carpenters
• Drywallers
• Electricians
• Floor Coverings
• Furnace Workers

View the original article here

What is Mesothelioma Cancer or Disease?

What is Mesothelioma cancer or disease?

A lot of us still didn't know what is MESOTHELIOMA Cancer or Disease? Well this blog will tell you more or less some of the information regarding Mesothelioma cancer or disease. It is hope that by posting some of the info on this Mesothelioma cancer or disease the general public or readers out there will have the ideas or knowledge regarding this killer disease.

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is almost always caused by previous exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral. It is distinguished from other minerals by the fact that its crystals form long, thin fibers. The inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause a number of serious illnesses, including mesothelioma and cancer. Since the mid 1980s, many uses of asbestos are banned in multiple countries.

In this disease, malignant cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the body's internal organs. Its most common site is the pleura (outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity), but it may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity) or the pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart).

Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or have been exposed to asbestos dust and fibre in other ways, such as by washing the clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos, or by home renovation using asbestos cement products. Unlike lung cancer, there is no association between mesothelioma and smoking .
Mesothelioma cancer can develop in the tissues covering the:

The pleura

The tissues lining (or covering) the lungs are called the pleura. There are two pleura. These can be called pleural membranes. The gap between them is called the pleural space. The pleura are fibrous sheets. They help to protect the lungs. They produce a lubricating fluid that fills the gap between the two pleura. This helps the lungs to move smoothly in the chest when they are inflating and deflating as we breathe.

Mesothelioma is most often diagnosed in the pleura. This is known as pleural mesothelioma. Because it is so close, pleural mesothelioma can also affect the sheet of tissue covering the heart - the pericardium. Doctors call the pericardium the lining, although it is on the outside of the heart. It protects the heart and allows it to move smoothly within the sac that surrounds it. So it does much the same job for the heart as the pleura do for the lungs.

The peritoneum
The tissue lining the abdomen is called the peritoneum. It helps to protect the contents of the abdomen. It also produces a lubricating fluid. This helps the organs to move smoothly inside the abdomen as we move around.Mesothelioma of the tissues lining the abdominal cavity is known as peritoneal mesothelioma. It is much less common than pleural mesothelioma. It is unusual for mesothelioma to spread to other parts of the body. But if it does, it does not usually cause troublesome symptoms.

View the original article here

mesothelioma

                          mesothelioma :: Mesothelioma        /* */#content .diskuze label.postTextLabel {display: inherit !important;}
Mesothelioma Mesothelioma treatment, diagnosis and related information for patients and families. There are three recognized types of mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of the disease, accounting for roughly 70% of cases, and occurs in the lining of the lung known as the pleura. Peritoneal mesothelioma occurs in the lining of the abdominal cavity, known as the peritoneum and pericardial mesothelioma originates in the pericardium, which lines the heart.

An individual may be at risk to develop mesothelioma if he or she was exposed to asbestos in the workplace or at home. Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos and the inhalation of asbestos particles. In most cases, mesothelioma symptoms will not appear in an individual exposed to asbestos until many years after the exposure has occurred. Those with a past asbestos exposure history experiencing symptoms should consult a physician with experience in accurately diagnosing mesothelioma. The earlier mesothelioma is diagnosed, the more likely it is to be caught at an early stage. At earlier stages of mesothelioma progression, more treatment options are available and oftentimes a better prognosis is given. Additional mesothelioma information and statistics can be found in this section.
Mesothelioma Treatment
Once an individual has been diagnosed by a qualified mesothelioma doctor, the next step is to discuss mesothelioma treatment options and to develop a treatment plan. Recent scientific research has produced significant breakthroughs with regard to treatment protocols for mesothelioma patients and more options are now available for managing mesothelioma and supporting improved quality of life. Newly diagnosed mesothelioma patients often have many questions for their doctors about the treatment options that would be most effective for them. Conventional treatment options for mesothelioma include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Recently, chemotherapy drugs including Alimta® and Cisplatin have showed promising results in some patients.

Mesothelioma clinical trials as well as experimental treatments are other options that certain mesothelioma patients may be eligible to participate in. Our site features a comprehensive mesothelioma cancer treatment section that includes important information for patients and families. We've included resources on top mesothelioma experts such as Dr. Sugarbaker, as well as a comprehensive list of cancer centers where mesothelioma treatment takes place. Beyond the conventional treatments for mesothelioma, certain alternative therapies may provide assistance to mesothelioma patients. We continually update this section of our site as new mesothelioma treatment information becomes available. Check back often to read about the most recent advances.
Asbestos Exposure and Cancer
Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of mesothelioma cancer. Inhaled or ingested asbestos fibers may cause an inflammation of internal tissue and disrupt organ function which leads to the development of mesothelioma. Asbestos products were used extensively throughout the 20th century in a wide variety of applications. Asbestos companies continued to produce these products even after they were known to be hazardous and harmful to workers and their families. Many of these products were responsible for asbestos exposure sustained by both the individuals who manufactured the products as well as those who used them at commercial, industrial and military jobsites. Renovation and construction both at home and in schools and other public facilities also posed high risk areas for asbestos exposure.

Asbestos related cancer is common among military veterans who we exposed on naval ships, in shipyards and at military bases. Naval ships where exposure occurred include aircraft carriers, battleships, destroyers, submarines, warships and others. Some prominent shipyards where asbestos was prevalent include Brooklyn Navy Yard, Norfolk Navy Shipyard, Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, Long Beach Naval Shipyard and Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. At commercial and industrial locations including refineries, power plants, steel mills, auto production facilities and large construction sites, many workers were put at risk. Some of the occupations of workers at risk include electricians, plumbers, boilermakers, carpenters, mechanics , machinists and more. Additionally, if you lived with someone who was regularly exposed to asbestos and washed their clothes, you could be at risk for second hand asbestos exposure.
Veterans and Mesothelioma
Although rare, mesothelioma affects veterans from all branches of service: Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. As mesothelioma has a long latency period and can remain dormant for several decades, veterans who served our country from 1930 through 1980 are just now being diagnosed with the disease.

Navy veterans who worked in navy shipyards and or served on our nation's warships and submarine's from WWII through the Vietnam War were exposed to high concentrations of deadly asbestos and are at a high risk for developing mesothelioma. Boiler rooms, engine rooms, sleeping quarters, and other areas of naval vessels were the most common areas where asbestos was present. As a result, Navy veterans are at a greater risk of developing mesothelioma. Medical support and treatment centers are available to veterans who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma. If you are a veteran and believe that you were exposed to asbestos, you should inform your physician during your next visit.
Mesothelioma Lawyers
Asbestos manufacturers and distributors made a concerted effort to hide the dangers of asbestos from the public, while at the same time profiting heavily from the sale and manufacture of harmful asbestos products. Those suffering from Mesothelioma can seek compensation from the manufacturers of asbestos and asbestos-containing products by hiring a competent mesothelioma lawyer. When deciding whether or not you should pursue your legal rights as a mesothelioma victim, you should think about the following three things. First, asbestos manufacturers had knowledge of the dangers of asbestos and knowingly put hardworking men and women at risk. Second, treatment for mesothelioma can be very expensive. Third, by exercising your legal rights, you can protect your loved ones in the future.

Once you make the decision to pursue your rights, a competent asbestos attorney will maximize recovery from both viable and bankrupt asbestos defendants. Over 65 asbestos trusts have been established holding billions of dollars combined across them. These asbestos trust funds have been set aside to help compensate those workers who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer or other asbestos related diseases. The legal process to compensate mesothelioma victims is not overly burdensome and should be strongly considered to help offset treatment costs and to provide financial security for loved ones.
Read more: http://www.mesothelioma.com/#ixzz1kZpRwSQi

      Tags:Treatment|and|Lawyers|cancer|surgery|client|doctor|products|Veterans|symptoms|Lawsuit|Asbestos|mesothelioma|settlements|Peritoneal
Back Homepage About Us Contact Us Feedback News Photogallery Guestbook Blog Products Our Team FAQ Events Calendar Portfolio Advertise Here Privacy policy Search site Contact
Mesothelioma
    faceunigue@gmail.com
© 2012 All rights reserved. The agency has asked Chicago Attorney General Lisa Madigan to seek an injunction to prevent the contractors, Zidan Management Group and Dubai Construction, from tearing down the building, which contains a large amount of asbestos materials.

The EPA claims that its inspectors discovered that the two companies were not following proper asbestos removal procedures during the initial phases of demolition. In most cases, proper procedure involves safely removing asbestos materials before demolition begins or wetting these same materials before demolition so that fibers aren’t able to be released when the building comes down. The EPA also notes that they had no notification of the demolition and that the companies did not properly inspect for asbestos before work began.

Hence, the companies’ negligence led to the detection of unsafe levels of asbestos in the air around the building, which was constructed during a time when asbestos use was quite commonplace. The IEPA now wants a licensed, outside contractor to develop a plan to address the contamination.

Airborne asbestos fibers can be quite dangerous. Anyone working in the vicinity of such fibers without wearing proper protective gear, including masks, can inhale the fibers. These tiny, sharp particles can become imbedded in the lung area and cause the formation of cancerous tumors and an eventual diagnosis of mesothelioma.
Share your thoughts with us on Facebook

View the original article here

Asbestos Removal Questionable at Old Sugar Refinery

Brooklyn, NY - The future redevelopment of the former Domino Sugar refinery in Brooklyn is already garnering the attention of local labor unions who claim that the developer chosen for the project is considering a “shady” asbestos company to tackle the removal of the carcinogenic material from the site.

An article in The Gothamist reports that Two Trees Management, which will be overseeing the project over the next decade, has raised eyebrows for considering a company whose past involvement in similar projects is questionable at best and has resulted in a few lawsuits. And it’s all done in the name of saving a few dollars, say the members of Local 78, a union that consists of lead, asbestos, and hazardous waste laborers.

The union claims that not only did the company, New York Insulation, fail to pay its employees but they also left a hazardous mess behind after doing work at the Department of Education in Brooklyn, which was being turned into condominiums. They claim that during that particular job, asbestos material was literally flying out the window,

Jed Walentas, son of Two Trees founder David Walentas, claims the company is doing the right thing by hiring New York Insulation, proclaiming “total confidence” in the company. He also said they were “better than any other bidder, union or non-union.” Jeremy Soffin, the company’s PR director, agreed, adding that Two Trees has had “excellent experience working with New York Insulation in the past.”

The old refinery on the East River was built in 1856, and by 1870, records show, it was processing more than half the sugar used in the U.S. Though it was rebuilt after a fire in 1882, most of the old buildings remain on the site. The Brooklyn plant ceased operations in 2004. Three of the buildings have landmark status, but the others – which are full of asbestos – will be either demolished or renovated.

State and federal laws demand that asbestos removal be done by a licensed contractor trained in such procedures and that it be done in ways so as not to release dangerous fibers into the air, where they can be inhaled and cause mesothelioma cancer and other diseases.

View the original article here

Clean-Up Halted at Old Asbestos-Filled Hotel

Pat Guth contributes news and insightful content for the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance. Raton’s code enforcement officer, David McCarty, notified Waste Bureau Chief Analie Ashley-Marx late last week that recent tests from the charred site show that some materials left behind do indeed contain more than 1 percent asbestos. Furthermore, the material is in unstable condition, which means it’s “friable” and can release hazardous particles into the air.

El Portal owner Andy Holman claims he was unaware of the situation. He notes that when the private inspection firm he hired presented him with results, they didn’t tell him that they detected any levels of asbestos that required special attention. Hence, he moved on with the clean-up, unaware of any concerns until officials halted the process late last week. Unfortunately, some of the toxic waste had already been dumped in the city of Raton’s municipal landfill, which is not licensed to accept asbestos waste.

As a result, Holman will probably receive some sort of “notice of violation” and may even be fined for the error. Chuck Akeley, the Solid Waste Bureau’s enforcement manager, said they’ll make a determination when “all the facts are in.” The media was not informed as to how the city gained the information about the improprieties.

“We’ve been working very closely with Raton,” Akeley said of discussions between the Solid Waste Bureau and the city. “We want to see this debris disposed of properly… and that’s the goal. He does not believe the debris currently left behind poses a health hazard to those who live or work in the area but encourages residents to abide by the warning signs posted at the site so as to avoid asbestos exposure, which can cause cancer.
Share your thoughts with us on Facebook

View the original article here

Investigation Continues in Paterson, NJ Asbestos Incident

Pat Guth contributes news and insightful content for the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance. The city’s law department and the state’s labor department have confirmed that they are involved in the investigation as is Sheriff Richard Berdnik, who is interested in learning the facts because the inmates used in the project were part of his Sheriff’s Labor Assistance Program (SLAP).

“Our guys weren’t equipped to do that and we weren’t educated to do that,” said Michael Jackson, a member of the executive board of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Local 2272, referring to the municipal workers. “The city tried to cut costs and it put people in danger.”

Coke claims, however, that the workers were never in danger of asbestos exposure. He says all employees were given masks and gloves while working inside the Ellison Street structure and that air and dust samples were taken and came back negative. Others say that Coke brought in a fan to clear the dust before the samples were taken.

Now, the inmates and municipal workers remain worried about their health, aware that inhaling asbestos fibers could eventually cause severe respiratory problems and issues such as the development of mesothelioma cancer.
Share your thoughts with us on Facebook

View the original article here

Iron Range Community Gets Answers about Taconite and Mesothelioma

Duluth, Minnesota - Individuals who’ve spent a lifetime working in Minnesota’s taconite industry gathered last Friday evening to hear the long-awaited results of a study that could explain why the levels of mesothelioma in that region of the state are much higher than elsewhere in Minnesota.

An article in the Duluth News Tribune reports that the study found a definitive connection between the length of time an individual works in the taconite industry and an increased risk of developing mesothelioma, a form of cancer normally associated with asbestos exposure. However, the study also noted that the culprit particles that could be causing the disease are largely confined to the mines, and that, in general, they should not be reaching the surrounding communities.

Dr. Jeff Mandel, head of the University of Minnesota’s Workers Health Study research team, says the mines have safety standards and procedures in place to protect their workers but there’s still risk to those in the industry.

“This is a dusty job,” Mandel said. “No matter how you look at it, it’s dusty work. You have to make sure you protect yourself.”

But Mandel says he and his team still haven’t really found the smoking gun that explains the high rate of mesothelioma among taconite workers in Minnesota. Records show 82 Iron Range workers have died in recent years of mesothelioma, a disease that can take up to four decades or more to develop. That means some may have worked in the mines as early as the 1960s or 1970s.

“What’s new in the results released Friday is the definite link to the taconite industry,” said the article. “Every year a worker spent in the industry increased the risk of mesothelioma by 3 percent,” reported the researchers.

Researchers were focusing on what they call “elongated mineral particles” or EMPs. It was a “potential link” between cumulative exposure to workplace EMPs and mesothelioma in taconite works that seemed to appear probable during the research. “However, the link is not felt to be certain,” the team reported.

Attendees did, however, rejoice in what they viewed as a cadre of good news that came out of the report, namely that:
Air quality in communities surrounding the mines is better than in most parts of Minnesota in terms of particulates in the air.Exposure to dust from taconite operations is, in general, within safe limits.Spouses of taconite industry workers are at no greater risk of contracting dust-related lung diseases, like asbestosis or mesothelioma, than the general public in Minnesota.

View the original article here

Judge Imposes $850,000 Civil Penalty for Asbestos Violations

Steubenville, Ohio - A judge in Jefferson County, Ohio has imposed a large fine on the owner of a former steel facility and his affiliates for what he described as “massive asbestos violations.”

According to an account in the Norwalk Reflector, the sanctions against Arthur David Sugar, Sr.; David Sugar Excavating, LLC; Honey Creek Contracting, Inc.; Excavation Technologies Inc.; and ADS Leasing are the result of shoddy practices that occurred during the demolition of the former Weirton Steel Mill in the town of Steubenville, Ohio. The court found that the defendants showed a blatant disregard for laws governing asbestos handling and removal. Specifically, in some cases they failed to remove the material before demolition or did so in an improper manner, and also failed to notify the Ohio EPA of their intention to remove asbestos from the facility.

“Asbestos is widely known to be a dangerous, cancer-causing material which must be abated in any demolition,” Attorney General DeWine said when the verdict was announced. “The aggressive penalty issued against the defendants in this case shows that endangering Ohioans by failing to properly manage asbestos will not be tolerated.”

In 2011, Sugar and Honey Creek pleaded guilty in a United States District Court to one count of conspiracy and four counts of violating the Clean Air Act rules related to the proper removal and handling of asbestos. As a result, a trial ensued in 2012 at which time the defendants’ liability was debated, resulting in the recent penalty.

“As attorney general, I take my role in protecting the health and safety of Ohio families very seriously,” DeWine said. “I will continue to work with Ohio EPA to make sure Ohio's laws regarding asbestos are enforced across the state.”

An abundance of asbestos was used in steel mills across the country throughout much of the 20th century, so it isn’t unusual to encounter the material when doing demolition or renovation at an old mill. Asbestos may have been used in building products like floor or ceiling tiles or could have been employed as insulation for boilers, generators, pipes, and electric wiring. Individuals who worked in steel mills were constantly being exposed to the carcinogenic material. Hence, those workers are still candidates for developing diseases such as mesothelioma or other cancers.

View the original article here

Proposed Missouri Legislation is Double-edged Sword for Mesothelioma Patients

Kansas City, Missouri - A proposed bill in the Missouri State senate might just assist mesothelioma patients in obtaining more and better workman’s compensation for their pain and suffering if their disease was caused by asbestos exposure on-the-job, reports an article in the Lake Expo, but it will also take away their right to sue employees for their negligence.

Legislation known as Senate Bill #1 is making its way through the state government, dealing with a number of issues including one that will specifically impact those who’ve developed mesothelioma because of occupational exposure.

“The bill clearly defines ‘occupational diseases due to toxic exposure’ and requires that they be covered under workman’s compensation benefits,” state representative Ray McCarty recently told a group of business persons gathered for a meeting in the Lake of the Ozarks area. He explained that the bill would prevent employees from suing their employers over diseases such as mesothelioma.

However, McCarty points out that certain provisions in the bill would provide more and larger workers’ comp payments to individuals with mesothelioma, asbestosis, coal worker’s pneumoconiosis (or “black lung disease”), and seven other ailments. Victims of mesothelioma, for example, would receive 300 percent of the state’s average wage for 191 weeks.

Though Missouri governor Jay Nixon was at first resistant to signing the bill, changes to the original language caused a change of heart and the governor, whose family has been affected by mesothelioma cancer, is now expected to sign the bill after it passes through both the house and the senate. Many individuals are concerned, however, that this bill will prevent victims from suing for much-deserved compensation.

For decades, employees in a variety of occupations were regularly exposed to dangerous asbestos materials while on-the-job. Individuals employed as construction workers, auto mechanics, electricians, pipe fitters, insulation workers, and in a variety of other jobs have long been prime candidates for developing mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases. As mesothelioma has a long latency period, many of these individuals are still being diagnosed today, despite the fact that asbestos use was generally halted at the end of the 1970s.

View the original article here

Asbestos Labeling Law Passes through Washington House of Representatives

Olympia, Washington - A bill which demands that all products containing asbestos and sold in Washington State stores be labeled as such, informing buyers that the product they’re purchasing could be hazardous to their health if not handled properly, has passed the second step towards becoming a law.

The Spokesman-Review reports that the proposed bill passed the House of Representatives this week with a vote of 65-28 in favor of the proposition, which was first introduced by Democratic Senator Andy Billig of Spokane.

Generally, the bill pertains mostly to construction products, many of which still contain small amounts of the harmful mineral. Under the proposed legislation, these products will be clearly labeled, allowing purchasers the option of finding a substitute product that does not contain hazardous asbestos.

Advocates for individuals already suffering from asbestos-related diseases due to on-the-job exposure, including construction workers, see the bill as a step in the right direction, though many believe the use of asbestos in the United States should be banned.

According to the article, the House first turned down an amendment proposed by Rep. Shelly Short, R-Addy, to lower the potential maximum penalties for not labeling from $10,000 to $1,000. Rep. Dave Upthegrove, D-Des Moines, explained that rather than a fine, violators are more likely to get a warning and the opportunity to take corrective action. The higher figure is a maximum, not a set amount for every infraction, he explained.

The next step in making the asbestos labeling bill a reality is a signature by Washington State Governor Jay Inslee. These small asbestos fibers

blow in the air and still remain for a long time. When breathed into the body are toxicity.

Below are all types of mesothelioma

Pleural Mesothelioma:
Most cases of mesothelioma begin in the pleural mesothelioma. The cancer affects to the lungs and

prevent the lining and cavities of the lungs. It's a build up of fluid between the lung lining and the chest

cavities.
