The Chinese were the first to make this sweet mixture of snow, fruit and milk 4000 years ago. Even before that a Greek doctor Hippocrates recommended frozen food as a cure for diseases because he believed it has a vitalizing effect. Alexander the Great used to treat his commanders with sweetened snow. Ice and snow mixed with fruit, honey and rosewater was the favourite desert of the Roman emperor Nero.
It was in the middle ages when ice-cream found its way to the European courts. It is said that Marco Polo, a famous Croatian traveller and adventurer brought it to Italy. However the first ice-cream shop was opened in Paris in 1686 (the shop was run by a Sicilian Francesco Procopio dei Coltelli), and regular customers included famous names like Rousseau, Voltaire and Diderot.
From then until today this exquisite ice desert has taken an important place in desert menus of all excellent restaurants.
The first ice-cream factory was founded in Baltimore, USA in the middle of 19th century. Ice lolly was created by accident – 11-year-old boy left a glass of lemonade with a spoon in it, on a windowsill. That night the temperature fell and in the morning he found a lemonade ice-cream on a stick (spoon). In 1924 he applied for a patent for his ice lolly.
More sophisticated version of ice-cream is sorbet with at least 25% of crushed fruit, but without milk and eggs. Ice –cream can be made with whipped cream which is also very tasty but has high milk fat. A lighter version is ice-cream made with milk. Nutritionists recommend ice-cream made of yoghurt and fruit.
On a hot summer day it is difficult to resist having this delicious refreshing treat. There are many types of ice-cream to choose from, both in ice-cream shops and supermarkets.

As more and more woman are turning away from hormone replacement therapy and seeking natural relief from hot flashes the herb sage has been recognized as an option. So if you are struggling with what to take for hot flashes sage may be the answer you are seeking.
A 2005 study at the School of Public Health, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, discovered that in a controlled trial sage and alfalfa reduced severe hot flushes by 60% compared with a placebo. The antihydrotic (reduce levels of perspiration) properties in sage help to decrease hot flashes.
Sage, a safe source of estrogen, is an extremely medicinal herb and is used in treatment of hot flashes, while helping to reduce excessive sweating, typically night sweats. Studies have shown that after three months of taking Sage Extract Tablets, hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms can be improved greatly. Also Sage has been reported in the prevention of blood clots making it useful in heavy menstrual bleeding.

Sage is a good herbal tea to relieve the hot flashes of menopause. How to make Sage Tea: You can make the tea shortly before bed for three nights, then once every few days thereafter. Begin by using 1 ½ teaspoon of dried sage or ten large fresh sage leaves. Pour approximately one cup of boiling water over the sage or ten large fresh sage leaves. Let the tea steep for five minutes and strain. The result will be bitter, but can be sweetened with honey. If the bitter taste of the tea repels you try a different form of the teas such as pills or capsules.

Many people grow sage for making tea in their garden. Electing to grow your own sage is an excellent way to ensure the sage is organic. Sage makes an attractive statement in the garden, and is available in a number of varieties from the common gray green to the startling tri-colored stage. So if you are searching for what to take for hot flashes the answer maybe in your garden, coming directly from nature.

Prior to consuming any herb for hot flashes, I suggest you do your research and check with a progressive and knowledgeable health practitioner.

If your answer is yes, then you may what to try omega 3 fish oil. Omega 3 fish oil is a concentrated source of fish oil. It generally comes in capsules or you can obtain it by consuming foods rich in the oil. Omega 3 fish oil has been attributed to relieving a variety of discomforts associated with menopause. During menopause fluctuation in hormones and decreasing estrogen will take place. Omega 3 fish oil may help reduce hot flashes that menopausal women experience.
Omega fish oil can help reduce hot flashes that menopausal women experience because of the fluctuation in hormones and decreased estrogen. Hot flashes and night sweats, unfortunately, maybe all too common in the life of a woman going through menopause. Now listen to this, continued great news, according to WomentoWomen.com, a team of Italian scientists in 2005 completed testing that showed a “progressive and highly significant reduction” in hot flashes from regular doses of omega-3.
Some women complain of and experience depression during menopause which is caused by women fluctuating hormones. It also indicates that the woman’s fertility is ending. According to studies by Journal of Affective Disorders a regular intake of omega-3 fish oil can lessen women from depression symptoms by up to 29 percent. This is good news because depression affects all aspects of a woman’s well-being.
According to the University of Maryland Medical Institute Menopausal women have an increased risk of heart disease and osteoporosis, so it is vital to protect the heart and bones. Omega 3 fish oil has been reported to lower cholesterol levels, improve blood pressure, improve blood circulation and strengthen the bones and joints in a woman’s body. Women over 40 especially need the added protection fish oil offers for the safeguarding of heart and blood vessels as well by reducing triglyceride levels.
Omega-3 fish oil stabilize hormones that cause hot flashes and night sweats, but also the hormones that can cause, the unwanted, menopausal weight gain and mood swings. Because of the hormone variations a woman may experience mood swings. That is where Omega -3 fish oil can assist in regulating the hormonal balance to create a more balanced mind and body.
You can find these fats in a variety of sources, including spinach, mustard greens, wheat germ, walnuts, flaxseed (and flaxseed oil), soybean and canola oil, and even pumpkin seeds. But the very best source is fish. Here are a few fish with higher levels of Omega-3, to help you stop hot flashes naturally: mackerel, trout, herring, and tuna, blue fin, salmon, sardines, (canned), sturgeon, tuna, albacore and whitefish.
Prior to consuming any herb for hot flashes, I suggest you do your research and check with a progressive and knowledgeable health practitioner.

It is another useful and natural menopause treatment for hot flashes. Maca root assists with increasing the amounts of estrogen in a woman’s body then creating a balance between estrogen and progesterone. Maca Root contains levels of helpful vitamins such as Vitamins B1, B2, and B12.

For a considerable number of women, menopause may be a whole host of discomforting symptoms to contend with. The most common symptoms are hot flashes, fatigue, loss of libido, irritability, migraine headaches and even depression. The symptoms are caused by the reduction in estrogen and testosterone in menopausal woman.
A Maca root supplement assists in the restoration of hormone levels and is commonly used to lessen the dreaded hot flashes and as a result serves as natural relief for hot flashes. This is exciting news for women.

Instead of taking hormone replacement therapy, thousands of American women depend on a root crop from Peru for menopause relief. Maca is a vegetable root which is related to the potato family and grows in the high Andean plateaus of Peru at extremely high altitudes.

This root is called maca, and it has been a popular Peruvian remedy for thousands of years. Only lately have Western women realized how critical maca can be to their health.

Unlike phytoestrogenic plants like Black Cohosh, which work on the ovaries to regulate their functions, Maca works on different organs like the adrenal gland, pituitary gland, and the pancreas to reduce the symptoms of menopause.

It should be noted that the herb Maca does not replace human hormones with plant-hormones or plant estrogens like other herbs such as Black Cohosh and other phytoestrogen herbs. Maca actually supplements a woman’s body and causes the pituitary gland to produce bio identical human hormones which result in increasing estrogen, progesterone and testosterone hormones naturally.

This ancient remedy has also been found to maintain the libido during menopause by increasing the endocrine gland’s output. Take note that maca itself does not contain any hormones; rather, its effects on the pituitary gland produces the precursors needed to raise progesterone and estrogen levels.

Unlike hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which shocks the body and throws it into a state of confusion, Maca’s effects work slowly, naturally, and produce very few if any side effects.

Maca root is receiving exceedingly positive responses from holistic health practitioners and women who have tried the herb. Menopausal women who are seeking natural relief for hot flashes may want to check out this Peruvian remedy.

I can remember when I began to experience hot flashes. There were times when, while doing my daily activities, working at my desk or completing my daily chorus, I would suddenly experience a feeling of intense heat along with sweating as well as heart palpitations. The sensations would typically last for two to thirty minutes for each occurrence. Oftentimes the sensation of heat would begin in my face and course throughout my body.
The hot flash event would repeat a few times each week or sometimes constantly throughout the day. They were always unpredictable. A sense of lethargy would accompany the hot flash sensation. After experiencing embarrassment, frustration, irritability and sometimes even depression I decided to visit my local health food store. I wanted to talk with a nutritionist about my symptoms. After providing the nutritionist with the symptoms I described above, she informed me that I was experiencing menopause.
The nutritionist suggested I try Damiana an herb for hot flashes. Prior to the suggestion, I had never heard of the herb. I tried it immediately and the rest is history….I began to take Damiana daily. Both my hot flashes and lethargy symptoms were diminished significantly. So for years now I take Damiana as a part of my daily herbal supplement because it has improved my stamina considerably. In addition, it relieves any menopausal symptoms I may have, i.e., hot flashes, migraine headache, bloated sensation and lethargy.
There are two types of herbs for menopause relief. They are phytoestrogenic and non-estrogenic.
A phytoestrogenic herb contains components of estrogenic which is produced by plants. The estrogens from these herbs treat the hormonal imbalance by initiating the plant-based estrogens into the body.
Non-estrogenic herbs are plants that do not have estrogen properties. As a result of menopause, the estrogen produced by the ovaries is reduced significantly. Non-estrogenic herbs for menopause do not contain estrogen or hormones but stimulate hormonal production within the body.
After doing additional research I discovered that Damiana is used as an herbal medicine to treat a wide variety of conditions. The herb has been associated with helping with low estrogen, hot flashes, impotency, infertility, menopause and PMS (pre-menstrual tension). Damiana can be taken as an extract, capsule form or crushed dry leaves.
Prior to consuming any herb for hot flashes, I suggest you do your research and check with a progressive and knowledgeable health practitioner.

Also called cow clover, bee-bread, and purple clover, red clover is now being thought of as a “cure-all” for menopause symptoms including a natural relief for hot flashes.

Menopause symptoms are the result of a drop in estrogen. This drop causes hormone imbalance in women who have reached middle-aged. Isoflavones (isofavones are water-soluble chemicals found in many plants) are capable of augmenting and stabilizing these lowered hormonal levels, curbing the severity of these symptoms of low estrogen levels. The isoflavones in red clover balance the body’s estrogen levels by copying estrogen. This process helps to relieve menopausal women suffering from a hormone imbalance. According to some reports, red clover’s benefits have been proven to help relieve various symptoms of menopause which include night sweats as well as hot flashes.
Red clover is one of the premium sources of, phytoestrogens, i.e., plant estrogens that mimic the female sex hormone. These phytoestrogens help to increase the levels of estrogen in our bodies, Isoflavones are water-soluble chemicals found in many plants, thereby reducing menopausal symptoms. Red clover also contains many vitamins and minerals including calcium, magnesium, niacin, potassium, chromium and Vitamin C.
Benefits of Red Clover
Studies on red clover show that it does seem to reduce menopause symptoms of hot flashes and mood swings which is a natural relief for hot flashes. In a recent study in the Netherlands, women taking a red clover supplement reported a 44% decrease in their hot flashes over 8 weeks. Red clover is also thought to be helpful in fighting osteoporosis. Because it contains high amounts of calcium, red clover may slow down or even prevent bone loss. Red clover also increases the amount of high-density lipoprotein, or “good” cholesterol, in the bloodstream. This has been linked to reducing the risk of heart disease in menopausal women. So with the added benefit of providing natural relief for hot flashes Red Clover is not only nature’s beauty but medicinal as well.
Conversely to the previous studies on the effect of red clover as a natural relief for hot flashes, more recent studies have not been as promising. One study was conducted at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. After comparing red clover to a placebo the herb did not prove to reduce hot flashes or night sweats.
With the reports from various studies at hand you will need to do your own research to determine if red clover provides natural relief from hot flashes.
Prior to consuming any herb for hot flashes, I suggest you do your research and check with a progressive and knowledgeable health practitioner.

How Does Dong Quai Work?

The National Institute of Health, Office of Dietary Supplements states that it is still unclear how this herb works. “It remains unclear if Dong Quai has the same effects on the body as estrogens, if it blocks the activity of estrogens, or has no significant hormonal effects”.
Some lab tests suggest that Angelica sinensis contains compounds that may help reduce pain, dilate blood vessels, and stimulate and relax uterine muscles.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Because we don’t know the effect on estrogen receptors, women with estrogen sensitive breast cancer and those using birth control pills, should be careful before using Dong Quai.
One website we have found stated that you should avoid “essential oil of Don Quai” because of it contains some cancer causing substances.
Read carefully about potential risks and contra-indications before you start taking Dong Quai, especially if you are using certain prescription drugs or other herbal or natural supplements.
Always check with your health care provider before taking Dong Quai or any other supplements.

It gives relief to the liver when it under goes extra stress due to imbalanced hormones which makes it a great herb for hot flash natural treatment.
A woman’s hormone production level can become unbalanced and when that occurs the liver undergoes a great amount of stress. Dandelion root has been used as a general liver tonic, making it a useful menopause herb in a roundabout way.
Dandelion has been known to be an excellent strengthener for the liver, the dominate center for hot flashes. All parts of the dandelion are edible and have medicinal and culinary uses. Dandelion leaves are very nutritious and can be used as an herb to lessen hot flashes.
Dandelion root is deemed to be one of the safest and most popular herbal remedies. It supposed to strengthen the entire body, especially the liver and gallbladder. Efficient liver function is critical for overall good health.
It is also recommended for frazzled or stressed, internally slow, and sedentary people. In addition, a cup of dandelion tea can act therapeutically for anyone who consumes too much fat, processed foods, and sugar.
Suggested use for Dandelion roots, eat raw, steamed, in a salad, sautéed or braised in olive oil with a dash of spike seasoning or even dried, roasted and ground into a coffee substitute. The flowers can be used to make dandelion wine, but they also can be added to a salad. If you used in a salad, the greens should be picked while still small and tender, before the first flower emerges because the larger greens tend to be tougher and bitter and better for cooking.
The greens are higher in beta-carotene than carrots. The leaves are rich in potassium, antioxidants, and vitamins A and C and the iron and calcium content is super even more than spinach. You also get vitamins B-1, B-2, B-5, B-6, B-12, C, E, P, and D, biotin, inositol, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and zinc by using a tasty, free vegetable that grows wild in your neighborhood. Dandelion is an overall health enhancing food not to mention an effective hot flash natural treatment.
Prior to consuming any herb for hot flashes, I suggest you do your research and check with a progressive and knowledgeable health practitioner.

The colour of the leaves ranges from light green to dark green, burgundy and purple. The leaves are pointed and reddish at the tip. A stalk grows from the middle of the rosetta with star-shaped flowers on the top. They can be yellow, red or purple and they flower for several weeks. After that the rosetta dies but by that time it has already produced many small rosettas (chicks) so the circle of life goes on.
It is known for its hardiness and it can be found in rock gardens, or growing freely on walls, rocks, and roofs. Its Latin name Sempervivum means always alive, and it actually describes the plant’s ability to survive unfavourable conditions. Because of its ability to store water in the leaves it can survive dry seasons.
The leaves change colours depending on the season and the most colourful time is in spring. Its beauty and hardiness makes it ideal for rock gardens, flower beds or balconies.

The houseleek is also a healing plant – it contains polysaccharides which have a positive effect on immune system and cancer diseases; ethereal oils, malic acid and formic acid, resin and other substances. The juice from its thick leaves is used for healing earache. Put a few drops of freshly squeezed juice from the leaves into the ear canal. It is also used to cure burns, small wounds, ulcers, warts and corns. The juice or squashed leaves are also used as a compress to cure stings, cracked skin, herpes, haemorrhoids. You can also use the leaves to make tea which has anti-inflammatory diuretic and refreshing effect. Therapeutic effects of the houseleek have not been fully researched and that is why it is mostly used in folk medicine.
