Dogs LOVE Christmas!

Our Cairns love Christmas. This is a photo from Christmas 2007. We always have a stocking of toys for Molly and Jack to open. Some of their stocking gifts are their old toys that I wrapped up. They just enjoy the unwrapping process so much and it's a fun activity for them.

Jack especially loves toys that talk. This year we got him replacement #3 of the Pip Squeak Duck dog toy, some kind of goofy toy called a Deedle Dudes cow and a Skinneeez skunk.

Speaking of skunks, Molly got sprayed by a skunk today while we were out on our walk. Oh boy ... another story for another day!

Hunting Season and Pets

It will be deer hunting season here soon and that means our area of the country will be inundated with people dressed in orange and non-stop gun fire from daylight to dark. We live in a rural area that is a hot spot for deer hunters, and to someone who doesn't hunt but who does a lot of outdoor exercising and dog walking it can be quite frightening.

Last year I bought Molly and Jack their own little day-glow orange vests from the coolest dog supply resource, Ugly Dog Hunting Company. (Funny name!) It was tough finding a dog hunting vests small enough to fit my little Cairns, but they work okay. Darn if they aren't just the cutest little four-legged furballs! Wouldn't you agree?

He barks excessively especially when we have company. He isn't barking to be mean, he seems to just want everyone's attention. We've tried using a spray bottle, shaking a can with coins in it, and putting him in timeout, but none of these techniques seem to stop him from barking.
Kansas State Dog: Cairn Terrier?

Should Kansas name the Cairn Terrier breed their state dog? I would vote a resounding "YES!", and so does a resident of Wichita who owns Cairns and is trying to get Kansas lawmakers interested in the idea. Read the full Associated Press news release below. I'd also like to hear what you think. Do you think that Kansas should make the Toto dog, the Cairn Terrier their state dog? It's a pretty controversial topic right now in Kansas.

Dog Staph Infection

Poor Molly May, our female Cairn Terrier. The vet told me yesterday that she had a staph infection likely brought on by a seasonal allergy. Happy Jack has it too but not as bad as Molly at this point. I took Molly to the vet as soon as possible when I discovered her belly was covered with little reddish bumps and her privates area was swelled about twice the normal size. She was having trouble eliminating and it really reminded me of how I felt when I had a urinary infection.

How to Get a Puppy to Follow You

"I am trying to train my new puppy to follow me during our daily off leash walks, but she seems distracted by all of the normal outdoor things like leaves, birds, twings, etc. She just ignores me when I call her to follow. Do you have any puppy training sugestions that will help? We live in the country and it is perfectly safe for her to be off leash. I still want to keep a close eye on her and these walks are a fun activity the family can do together with our new pup. ~Bridget

Housebreaking Accidents Happen

Sometimes housebreaking accidents do happen. And sometimes these accidents teach the owner more than it teaches the dog. Happy Jack has been housebroke for well over a year, but today he had an accident that surprised him and me!
