The diamond jubilee celebrations of Queen’s reign will also feature an interesting exhibition of gemstones of the royalty. Besides other precious gems on display there will also be the jewelry that is studded with diamonds that are the pieces of the world's largest diamond, Cullinan diamond. For all those hearing this name for the first time it is the largest rough diamond of gem quality that had been discovered till date. It weighed 3,106.75-cts or 621.35g which was eventually divided into nine large gem quality stones, seven of these will be on display at Buckingham Palace's 2012 summer opening.

The precious diamonds are set in brooches, a ring and a necklace and they have been worn by the Queen throughout her reign, and the other two stones are now part of the Crown Jewels.

This exhibition will showcase the long 200 years long association that the royalty has shared with these colored gemstones. But the pieces of the Cullinan diamond hold a special place in this unique collection. Interestingly at the time of the discovery at a mine near Pretoria in South Africa in 1905 this Cullinan Diamond, was simply discarded as no one thought it to be to be anything more than a huge crystal.

As it was uncommonly huge almost three times the size of any other diamond nobody thought it to be of any significance. But later, the clerks who had thrown away this enormous stone out of the window had a second thought and finally they were convinced that it was in fact the real thing!!! So, it was treasure and got its name after the owner of the mine Thomas Cullinan. Four years later after being cut and polished in two large gems, they were formally presented to Edward VII in the year 1909.

All those interested in viewing these historical gems can visit the Jubilee Celebration exhibition which is going to be held from June 30 to July 8, and from July 31 to October 7.

Largest Pink Diamond

One of the world’s largest pink diamonds was found at the Argyle diamond mine and so this 12.76 carat diamond is going to be known as The Argyle Pink Jubilee. Reports are that it is the largest pink diamond ever found at these famed mines located in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. These are the largest producer of pink diamonds in the world.

Though it is still premature to tell the price of this gem but it is expected to be at least $10 million according trade experts in Australia. The owner of these mines Rio Tinto informed that the mine will be productive for another 10 years supplying these pink diamonds and it seems that this is going the largest pink diamond ever found at the mine, he added.

As for the details this Argyle Pink Jubilee is a light pink diamond and is similar in color to The Williamson Pink that adorns the brooch of Queen Elizabeth II. She received this diamond as a wedding gift and was later set into this brooch at the time of her Coronation.

As for how soon this gemstone will be showcased, the expert diamond polisher Richard How Kim Kam, who is going to polish this pink diamond said first of all it will take two months of assessment and planning, and it will take another 10 days to cut and polish the diamond as a single stone.

It is only when the diamond has been cut and polished that it will be graded by a team of international experts and showcased to the world. Then later this year it will be sold as part of the annual Argyle Pink Diamonds Tender.

Usually large pink diamonds go to museums or are gifted to royalty. Some of these even end up at auction houses. In its history of 244 years Christie's auction house has only sold 18 polished pink diamonds that were over 10 carats.
