Flu vaccinations do not protect you from getting the flu.  When you catch the flu, vaccinations should, and in most cases, reduce the severity of the flu.  When you are injected with the virus, your body builds its own immunity to that virus.  H1N1 Swine Flu vaccine is no different.

Virus strains can become resistant to antiviral drugs – similar to other diseases.  The H1N1 Swine flu virus strain is resistant to older antiviral drugs, such as amantadine and rimantadine.  Health officials tell us that Tamiflu (oseltamivir) works well against the H1N1 Swine flu virus.  Tamiflu and Relenza (zanamivir) are two effective vaccines for the H1N1 Swine flu.  But, you have to take the vaccine before you contract the flu.  The big unknown is how long these antiviral vaccines will remain effective in your system.

There are some actions that you can take on your own without your doctor’s advice.  The H1N1 Swine flu is spread through the air and on contact.  The most obvious preventive actions  are to wash your hands often and wear a mask.  Those two actions are very effective.  However, our culture doesn’t wear face masks as other cultures do, to keep from spreading a disease, or to keep from catching a disease.  Washing our hands works well when in contact with others, but often we forget to do that after answering a phone or opening a door.  It still amazes me the number of people using the restroom who don’t wash their hands – but, that’s another story.

So, what else can you do besides washing your hands?  Build up your immune system and keep it strong and robust.  Several articles that I’ve read recently indicate that N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) might be helpful in maintaining your health during this or any flu season.  NAC is an amino acid coupled with a protein component.  It is a precursor to glutathione.  Every cell in you body can synthesize glutathione from three different amino acids, with L-cysteine being one of them.

Glutathione is a major weapon in your body’s arsenal for better health.  It is an antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals.  It builds your immune system.  It is also a mucolytic agent, meaning it breaks down or thins out lung-clogging mucous resulting from various respiratory diseases.  Your liver is critical for glutathione synthesis.  NAC has been shown to help in the detoxification process for liver and lung disorders.

Some Italian studies have shown that there is statistical evidence that NAC has been effective in reducing the severity of flu-like symptoms.  In some cases it appears that NAC was able to reduce the likelihood of even catching the flu.

Other herbs and supplements that are believed to be effective in the treatment or prevention of flu-like symptoms are: vitamin D, elderberry, licorice root, ginseng, whey protein and possibly vitamin C, Echinacea and zinc.  There is a concern that many of these herbs and supplements work by improving your immune system.  There is some speculation that any kind of immune-stimulants might make flu symptoms worse, or even worse, result in death.  Why?  Because it is believed that the H1N1 Swine flu virus has been more deadly to those with healthy immune systems.  My personal belief is that I would rather have healthy a robust immune system to ward off any flu virus, or any other contagion that I might encounter.

Swine flu which is also known as H1N1 is a flu-like virus that can spread from person to person. It is different from the regular flu because it is affecting many young healthy adults and kids and the number of people getting hospitalized is larger. Back in April 2009, the number of people catching the swine flu virus started to become concerning. World health organization got involved and decided to assess the situation. Many people were getting sick with flu like symptoms and what made it odd was that it was happening outside of flu season. It was also not affecting the typical people who would normally catch it. A third of people over 65 had immunity to it and young babies were not suffering as much as the older kids were. It was striking healthy young people and making them very sick.

It also spread from country to country very fast and started sending healthy people to the hospital. Although many people have only suffered mild cases there were still higher than normal amounts seen in the hospital and even suffering death. Most people who died from swine flu, died from the result of an illness associated with it.

Not only were healthy young people catching swine flu and having a hard time with it, so were people in the high risk groups. These groups include; pregnant women, people with asthma, kidney disease, lowered immune systems and people with diabetes.

Symptoms of the disease include but are not limited to; fever, sore throat, stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. Vomiting and loose bowel movements have been noted but are not in every case. A person could have one of these symptoms or all of them. It also has been reported that in many of the deaths that people seemed to be getting better when their fever returns making them very ill.

It was advised that immediate help should be sought if any of the following symptoms happen, in kids; fast and trouble breathing, bluish, not waking up, fever with rash, not wanting to be held and irritable, and not wanting to drink. In adults the list include; breathing trouble, pain in chest, dizziness and confusion, and vomiting that doesn`t seem to stop.

Swine flu germs seem to stay on surfaces for two to eight hours and someone infected with swine flu is contagious one day before and up to seven days after.

The best way to prevent swine flu is to wash hands frequently and not put hands up to the face in public. If a family member is sick, try to keep everything clean and stay away from that person as well as keeping hands washed. A vaccine has also been developed and is available for everyone to take.

Swine flu is spread by either touching a contaminated surface and then touching your mouth or nose or eyes, or it can be spread by breathing in the air of someone infected, since it is also air born. Not everyone is catching it, and the duration of sickness in people is different, it is also striking hard on people randomly.

However the 2009 pandemic is a new strain, and is in fact a hybrid of five different flu viruses: North American avian influenza, human influenza, North American swine influenza and two swine influenza viruses typically found in Europe and Asia. The strain has both Eurasian and North American genes, suggesting it evolved through international travel and contact between sufferers of different viruses.

The outbreak is believed to have begun on factory farms in Veracruz, Mexico, although there is evidence that it first arose among Asian pigs before being transported to America in a human host. When the virus first came to prominence in March this year, the Mexicans tried desperately to keep a lid on it; however there was little they could do to counter the reality of daily global travel and constant cross-border migration, and the virus spread rapidly. In June, less than three months after the Mexicans noticed the virus, the World Health Organisaton declared swine flu a pandemic.

Thankfully, it now seems that swine flu virus activity may have peaked in the US and some European countries – however other countries are still reporting sharp increases, so we`re definitely not out of the woods.

What are the Symptoms

Even if you have the virus, there is a strong likelihood you will experience only mild symptoms; these include fever, sore throat, coughing, vomiting nausea or diarrhea. In the majority of cases, the virus will have passed within six days.

However, if you are currently pregnant, or suffer from asthma, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, pneumonia or neurodevelopmental conditions, your susceptibility increases sharply. Swine flu can cause severe health problems for people in these health brackets, so, if you do fall into one of these categories, it`s best to take proactive measures.

What do I do if I have it?

If you are showing mild symptoms, such as coughing, sore throat or diarrhea, there`s little you can do but shut your doors, close your windows and sit it out at home. It`s not as severe as the plagues of the seventeenth century, where the authorities barricaded the infected inside their homes and daubed red crosses on their doors; but you will have a better chance of stopping the spread of your symptoms if you stay away from crowded places such as gyms, shopping malls, bars, clubs and restaurants. And you`ve got an excuse to get out of school or work – every cloud has a silver lining!

If you are starting to feel more severe symptoms, or if you more vulnerable to the virus for the reasons given above, it is recommended that you seek out a course of anti-virals and antibiotics straight away; oseltamivir or zanamivir are highly recommended.

How do I stop it spreading to me?

There is no protection against seasonal flu by existing vaccines. A recent study made by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that children had no preexisting immunity to the new strain however adults had some degree of immunity, particularly those over 60.

However a number of vaccines are available for swine flu: these include Pandemrix, ACAM-FLU-A, Fluzone, Influvac, Live attenuated (FluMist) and Optaflu. Consult your doctor or pharmacist to source the best available solution.

Swine flu is diagnosed by taking a test in a specialized laboratory and the best treatment available now is prevention by vaccination. The effort and work by many laboratories has resulted in producing vaccines to prevent the disease and the first vaccine was a nasal spray vaccine released in October, 2009. This vaccine has been approved for all age group individuals from 2 to 49, except for pregnant women who are not recommended to inject this vaccine.

However, another injectable vaccine made using killed H1N1 became available from October second week, and is approved from 6 months child to elderly, besides including pregnant females. These vaccines have received approval by the CDC only after undergoing clinical trials in the aim of proving that these vaccines are safe as well as effective. However, this does not overrule the fact that caregivers need to be aware of the guidelines of injecting this vaccine.

There has been a report that two antiviral agents, Tamilflu (Oseltamivir) and Relenza (Zanamivir) help in reducing Swine flu affects and also prevent the A and B influenza symptoms. However, indiscriminate use of these drugs should be restricted, besides these drugs are not recommended for people suffering with flu symptoms for over 48 hours or more. Conversely, patients facing severe infections may need additional measures like ventilation assistance and treatment of infections such as pneumonia occurring in patients with flu infection. There are interim guidelines suggested by the CDC for pregnant females to the given treatment using two antiviral agents.

population, or about 100 million people, according to
flu expert Ira Longini, from the University of
Washington’s School of Public Health.

Initial supplies of the swine flu vaccine, which will
be available sometime between mid-September to late
October 2009, are expected to be very limited — barely
enough to inoculate the 160 million people who are at
high risk of becoming infected.  An even bigger concern
is whether the fast-tracked vaccine is safe and
effective — since it’s being rushed to market without
the appropriate testing and safety evaluations.

There is a growing suspicion in the general population
and among certain members of the medical community,
including Dr. Joseph Mercola, the publisher of a
popular self-titled natural health newsletter, that
being exposed to this new swine flu vaccine might prove
to be more dangerous than the swine flu itself.

A new book, “The One-Minute Cure: The Secret to
Healing Virtually All Diseases,” offers compelling
evidence that the swine flu virus can be rendered
powerless in the body when one self-administers a
natural oxygenating substance. Madison Cavanaugh, the
book’s author, states that public fear is incorrectly
placed on the swine influenza virus itself. “Microbes,
germs, harmful bacteria and viruses, such as the swine
influenza virus, do not cause disease in and of
themselves,” Cavanaugh states.

“They do seek their natural habitat — such as an
oxygen-deficient body — rather than being the CAUSE of
the disease. It’s no different from the way mosquitoes
seek out stagnant water, but do not cause the pool to
become stagnant.”

Cavanaugh’s assertion is consistent with the findings
of Dr. Rudolf Virchow (1821 – 1902), also called the
“Father of Pathology.”

It is also supported by Louis Pasteur, the notable
19th century French chemist and microbiologist best
known for his remarkable breakthroughs in the causes
and prevention of disease, who recanted his germ theory
of disease at his deathbed, stating, “The microbe is
nothing. The terrain is everything.”

The terrain of which Pasteur spoke refers to an
oxygenated environment in the human body, which makes
for a strong immune system. A weakened or suppressed
state of the immune system only occurs when the human
body lacks oxygen, thereby allowing viruses, such as
the swine influenza virus, to breed.

It therefore stands to reason that the swine flu
virus does not CAUSE disease, but rather seeks out an
environment where it can thrive best — and that is in
oxygen-deprived bodies.

“A sufficiently oxygenated body is uninhabitable by
disease,” Cavanaugh states, and viruses can neither
survive nor thrive in it. Therefore, the best defense
against microbes, germs, harmful bacteria and viruses,
such as the swine flu virus, is to keep the body
oxygenated.”

Cavanaugh’s book, “The One-Minute Cure,” discusses
the therapeutic use of the only natural substance which
stimulates the movement of oxygen atoms from the
bloodstream to the cells to a dramatically greater
degree than is usually reached by other means.
