A new feature we recently added is a "download as pdf" function. We offer all our paying members this.
This means that you can get your moblog - all pictures and all the text you written over the years, or since yesterday depending on when you signed up and for how long you have been moblogging with us.

The sum we ask our users to pay is decided by those who pay -that is, you pay what you think it is worth to download your blog as a pdf.

And what do you do with the PDF? Well, for one thing it is a backup. If we decide to shut down mobilblog.net (which we are not) or if you want to print it, email it, or maybe just save it as a gift. Say for instance, that you have moblogged your first year in highschool, or your vacation, or any other period of time worth making a book about that you want to share or save.

Well, my pdf is like a photodiary, now securely stored for grandchildrens to find when I am gone, hopefully many years from now. (if they have pdf readers ;-)

The Everyday Seen Trough a Camera Phone

Karin Wagner wrote a paper from the Conference "A European Cultural Studies Conference in Sweden", held at Linköping University in June 2007.

I have mentioned Karin Wagner and her work on moblogging before.

Now her first paper is published. The moblogs she has been following are moblog.co.uk, mobilblogg.net (which is the one I'm connected to), albinogorilla from Denmark and the dutch moblog.nl.

The research project she is called "From celluloid to pixels: Network and ritual around e-cinema and mobile phone Camera". The mobile phone part of that project is hers.

The image of everyday life is in focus for this paper, and sure, those pictures are very common on moblogs, and a few examples from mobilblogg.net are in the paper to illustrate that.

Launch of moblog and photoblog for new parents

We have been working hard lately,creating a moblog/blog/vlogg/daily journal for newborn babies, or actually, their mothers (or fathers).

It is the local newspaper that figured "since we always have had a lively family section with newborn ads - why not take this to the web? "

They have worked with us earlier on some projects (for example creating a moblog for the towns soccer team).

So they asked us to come up with a solution where they could offer new parents to publish pictures and videos of their little ones.

The result was launched in may, and has since then received a steady stream of new parents signing up, and posting pictures via MMS, mail and uploads, creating photo albums and writing daily entries.

The newspaper is happy, since they have a well defined audience for their advertisers (strollers, toys, baby-clothes, all parents knows what I am talking about).

Grandparents, friends and the like can subscribe to notification via email when a new picture of the baby they are subscribing to is posted.

There also seems to be a growing communication between the parents, sharing a lot of their experiences, asking each others questions and such, which could indicate the birth of a community.

What makes a moblog a moblog?

When surfing the net searching for moblogs I often stumble over something called "moblog" and what I see is uploaded pictures clearly NOT taken with cameraphones.

Well... if the picture is NOT taken with a mobile camera, and a mobile telephone is NOT used to send the picture - then why call it a moblog?

On the other hand -why restrict users to cameraphones? Maybe posting screenshots and photos via computer suits them better in some cases-the moblog functions are just one of many ways to blog? Maybe that is better? But is it a moblog?

And when is it not a moblog? When there is no way to post from your mobile (of course), or when nobody uses those moblog features (could be)?

is that fever and fever sends in pictures that are not taken by cameraphone (in other words: almost all pictures and movies sent to mobilblogg.net are taken with cameraphones, and sent from the phone via mail or MMS)

If you dont share those interests, you shouldn't go (unless you want to see what a world without females might look like - I'm sad to say that it is about 95% male participants, or maybe more)

shinyshiny.tv went to 3GSM and wrote a good article about it.

The main thoughts are posted and numbered, number 14 is about moblogging.

The conclusion is correct "However, talking to a couple of blogging tech providers at 3GSM (including Motorola), people have twigged that moblogging is more about instant posting of photos and videos as (or just after) you capture them. Which when you think about it, makes way more sense."

Yes, it does make sense to me! Good thinking Motorola!

Three years of moblogging

Today, three years ago, the first picture was moblogged to mobilblog.net.

A lot of things have happened since then. I think that for someone interested in the life in Sweden between 2004 and 2007 we can present quite unique photo-material.

Mobilblogg.net have during these years been recognized by Swedish media (both online and offline)several times, always getting good reviews-

We now have registered users from over 10 countries,

We have over the years implemented several new features - most recent is the flashplayer for moblogged movies, and most important of all:

- we have a strong, active and welcoming community!

This community is blogging away from their mobilephones in an ever increasing flow of pictures and movies as more and more users are signing up.

(And I still don't think that moblogging has seen it's breakthrough yet)

Moblog as travelbog

A group of mobloggers at mobilblogg.net just came back from Thailand. The whole trip was followed by our community (and some outsiders, the travellers relatives and girlrfriends).

They moblogged just about everything they did and created a nice album with pictures from thailand.

They bought pre-paid international SIM card from 12Call and Happy, mobile carriers in Thailand, and paid domestic rates for sending MMS, which is about a third of the price here in Sweden.

Study of moblogging

Not long ago we had a visit from Karin Wagner, who for the University of Gothenburg is doing a study on some moblog communities, - moblog.co.uk, mobilblogg.net and "some dutch moblog"(she didnt say or I don't remember).

It turned into an interesting interview, and she raised some questions that I never thought of, and some things that I don't reflect on anymore. I'm not going to give you many examples, you will have to read her study when it´s finsihed. :-)

The thing I was most proud of was how impressed she was over how lively and friendly our community is. How friendly people are, how creative, and how much time and energy people put into their moblogs and the surrounding community.

There have also been arranged some IRL activities, like bowling, invitations to parties and guided tours of one city to mobloggers visiting from another city. I don't really think about that anymore, just taking it for granted. Well, these activities are of course being moblogged as they happen, but apart from that I think they occur in most successful online communities.

Recent Moblog Launces

We have been very busy lately, launching moblogs for our client Sydsvenskan. I wrote a line about the carneval theme moblog we did last summer.

After that we followed up with some more moblogs, adding some new features such as albums and rating of pictures.

The theme for the different moblogs have shifted over time- Sydsvenskan is the major newspaper in southerns Sweden they wanted their readers pictures from current events.

So, we have built and launched moblogs for Summer, Soccer World Cup (we got some cool pictures from Germany), Ramadan and just finished the Christmas Moblog. I sure had no idea what to expect, but some of the moblogs where very popular and readers of Sydsvenskan seem to have getting the hang of it.

The ones where a reward for the best picture was offered, and where pictures got printed in the paper, recived more pictures than those moblogs that where not promoted. This makes marketing of moblogs something to remember - just launching a moblog is not good enough. The old "whats in it for me" question must be answered in order to get a moblog living.

Sydsvenskan are very pleased with their moblogs, since it gives them a good dialogue with their readers.

At the moment there is no moblog "live", but the old ones are wrapped up and can be seen here, at Sydsvenskans website.

a J2ME application (initial prototype developed in Python) that allows you to link up your phone via Bluetooth to a GPS unit and then create (mo)blogs of text and pictures which are the tagged with latitude and longitude (on Google Maps) Read more...

I see plenty of use for this, the obviuous example is travelblogging. Moblogs in general, even at current level (without locations) are very good traveljournals.

No computer, no internet connection, just a phone. Surely you can fit that in your backpack?

P990i

My old P900 broke. Well I did it. I had it in the pocket of my shorts, smashed it against a cardoor. Then took a swim in a pool with it. (I was sober)

So I bought the new Sony Ericsson P990i. And that made me happy. What a difference! Faster, better, more functions and, tadaaa- WiFi! I have been blogging with it since.

I havent used all functions yet, and to be honest, I doubt I ever will. The phone is designed to do everything you can do in your office, and thats not really how I use my phone.

The only thing that might not be good, is how it looks. Yellowish/golden/silver.. shit.. why not black? That metallic plastic looks lika a VHS from the 80's.

(Its a matter of taste, of course)

UPDATE: Now I have had it for some weeks, and I am less satisfied. The software is slow, the browser freezes, and it sometimes restarts when I want to shut it of.

As said before, Textamerica will now charge 99 dollars a year. And they will delete all users who does not.

Alfie, at moblogUK welcomes all users who want a free moblog service and there is an application (download here) made buy a moblogUK user that will help mobloggers to move their pictures from textamerica to mologUK.

Alfie also says: We do want to get the word out to Textamerica users but we donÂt want this to be a moblogUK vs Textamerica thing, because frankly, it isnÂt - but itÂs really cool that someone has taken the time to write an import application for people who donÂt want to suddenly see their accounts, many of whom will have had them for years, deleted.

This step made by TA really rocks the boat for all moblog community nerds (thats me).

Well then? Are you waiting for me to promote mobilblogg.net? I won't, because, as the community evolves, it is getting more and more recognized that this moblog is for Scandinavians. And we already have some TA dropouts, they came for the language to be together with their countrymen, for example to discuss Swedish soccer (instead of American football).

Of course some Americans, Irishmen, Poles, some Egyptian, and Indians are blogging at mobilblogg. But they don't really participate in the community.

So maybe Scandinavian TA mobloggers will move over to us? We will see. The majority though, who are americans, will go to moblogUK where english is the language. Or maybe stay and pay at TA?

We will see. (Of course, former TA bloggers are most welcome to mobilblogg.net!)

It finally happened!

For the last couple of years the web has been presenting a growing amount of free moblog services. These moblogs in turn have presented a growing amount of mobloggers- using the services for free.. (remember - free moblog services!)

And now - the biggest moblog service of them all - the American moblog community textamerica, finally did it. They charge new users 99 dollars a year.

It was bound to happen. The question is - what will happen now? Will people pay? Will users drop out? Will the community revolt, as happened when Yahoo demanded Yahoo memberships for Flickr users?

Well.. We will see.. But let me guess - I guess that the community at textamerica is strong enough to keep their users, and that the users who are active within the community are willing to pay- because they will (rightly) think it is worth it.

Some users might drop out, but it will be those who were not really into it anyway.
Recruiting will be harder. At least as long as there are free alternatives around. And there are plenty of them out there.

Event moblog

Every fourth year, the students at the University of Lund hosts a carneval... and this year was Carneval year!

The media coverage of this event was slightly different this year. Four years ago there where hardly any mobilephones around, and not many sent pictures from their phones.

This year, many have cameraphones, and everybody at the carneval were invited to send their mobilepictures as MMS to a moblog hosted by the local newspaper. This way, an event- moblog was born, showing pictures from the carneval as it happened, with the carnevalists as mobloggers.
The moblog can be seen here, and is now closed for incoming messages. (the carneval is over)

The crew behind mobilblogg.net made it happen, based on knowledge and technology used at mobilblogg.net.

The moblog was up and running from tuesday to monday, and was a bit slow to start with, but filled up with pictures and comments as the weekend approached.

It worked by letting people send MMSes to a (easy-to-remember) mailadress, and pictures was published instantly, without preview from the editors. (however, there was moderation, and viewers could report misbehaviour). Pictures was also open for the public to comment on, without pre-moderation. All in all, it was almost too open for me to be comfortable.

Some decisions had to be made along the way regarding how open or closed it should be -should we let people moblog to mailadress or a phone number?, allow anonymous comments or not? preview and publish all pictures manually or use unmoderated publishing? etc etc. All in all, we let openess and participation rule over control and moderation as long as we could. And it worked.

The only restriction we made was that the moblog was closed at night, when the editors were sleeping. Pictures sent after midninght was first published the next day.

Our customer, the newspaper, was very pleased with the moblog, and new projects are already underway :-)

Researching moblogging

Karin Wagner, a swedish Doctor of Arts and Science will over a three year period study one English (moblog.co.uk?) one Danish, one Dutch and one Swedish (yep, mobilblogg.nu) moblog.

There is an article in GP - a morning paper from Gothenburg, about it, interviewing Karin.

They also bring up the similarities between moblogging and Lomogaphy.

I wonder where they got that idea?, maybe from here?

The article is good, answering the "who moblogs, and what" questions... the why is left out. I hope they will answer the "Why do people moblog" question when the study is being published.

We'll just have to wait a few years...

Have you seen Topmobogs?

Ok, it's a fairly new site, so I will not be too hard on them, and I guess they will

1- add more moblogs
2- create and present thumbnails for all mobogservices in their list.

And I hope their list, with inputs from the visitors, will be as complete as possible. I sometimes think I spend too much time looking for moblogservices and moblog news, it would be nice to have one, reliable and updated source.

But I am always suspicious when I see toplists of services or software... who's behind? And why? Is it one of the moblog outfits on the top ten list?
