A perfect, stylish fit for an ecologically minded rider, though it's also great for RV or camping trips. The motor produces 2hp and is powered by 24 volt batteries. It's sturdy at 140 pounds and will carry a combined 250 pounds in rider and cargo weight. Range is good at 25 miles and it will hit 18 mph at the top end. Large wheels at 20-inches make this one a pretty utilitarian ride. Recharge time is about six hours while running costs are about eight cents a mile.

BMW K1600GTL

The K1600GTL is now BMW’s premier sports tourer and puts the big machine right in the firing line of bikes like the Honda Pan-European, and the Honda GoldWing. Over the GT it comes with a massive top case big enough to swallow two full size helmets, the same panniers as the GT, plus it gets lower and further back handlebars, lower footrests, lower pillion footrests and a more luxurious pillion seat. Yet despite those small changes the extra weight and riding position of the GTL makes it feel very different.

Engine

The six-cylinder engine is so smooth a baby could sleep on it. Zero vibration, tons of torque, a soundtrack unlike any other bike and the ability to chug along at any revs in top gear. Put simply, it's the most amazing bike engine anyone has ever built. Five stars aren't enough. But where the GT is all about that engine, revs building high, going fast and slicing through the countryside, the GTL is more about taking a relaxed pace.

Ride and Handling

This bike is still incredible, just not quite so accomplished as the GT when it comes to covering ground fast. The extra weight over the standard GT means it suffers slightly on bumpy roads but for its sheer size this bike is an amazingly accomplished mile muncher. Sit back, take in the touring way of life and there are few things you’d rather be sat on top. Except for maybe the K1600GT.

Value

£17,000 is an awful lot of money, but when you think that essentially you’re buying a bike with the performance of a sports car but the comfort of an estate car, then it’s not too bad, all considered.

Equipment

With more kit than your average high specification 5-series car, there are more extras on this bike than anyone will ever need. Over the GT, it comes with a massive top case big enough to swallow two full size helmets, the same panniers as the GT, plus it gets lower and further back handlebars, lower footrests, lower pillion footrests and a more luxurious pillion seat. Honda CBR600RR

Honda have hit back hard with the track focused CBR600RR. They want their 600 crown back and after our first initial ride it seems they’ve done it. They’ve rectified the old motorcycle’s weak points, namely lack of midrange and weight. The Honda CBR600RR is now the lightest in the class, and has much more midrange and razor sharp handling.

Engine

The old Honda CBR600RR really lacked midrange between 7000rpm to 10,000rpm but the all-new 2007 model Honda CBR600RR has had an injection of midrange which makes it punchier. You really notice the extra drive out of slow to medium corners. At the top end Honda have only managed to strain a few more bhp, that should bring it up to speed with the competition.

Quality and Reliability

Hondas means quality and the older Honda CBR600RR seemed bullet proof. Even slightly tuned, poorly maintained race motors seem to last, even when they are thrashed week in and week out. We can’t see any reason why the new Honda CBR600RR should be any different.

Ride and Handling

Honda has shortened the wheelbase and tightened up the steering to make the Honda CBR600RR far sharper. Combine that with the reduction in weight and it all makes the new Honda CBR600RR a formidable track tool. It steers so well, you can really flick the motorcycle around and there so much feedback from the front tyre you can carry loads of brake into the turn.

Value

At just under over an estimated £7,500 the new Honda CBR600RR is not a cheap motorcycle. Suzuki’s GSX-R600, for example, is considerably cheaper. But out of all the 600cc supersports motorcycles the Honda CBR600RR always seems to hold its money and due to the high standard of components and general build quality. The Honda CBR600RR will still look like new in a few years time and should make it far easier to resell,

Equipment

The Honda CBR600RR's MotoGP styling is sleek in the flesh and typical Honda build quality runs all the way through. The suspension is fully adjustable front and rear and you can feel every half turn or click. Unfortunately you don’t get a slipper clutch as standard on the Honda CBR600RR, unlike its Japanese competition.

Suzuki Hayabusa GSX1300R

Suzuki have played around with the GSX1300R Hayabusa’s styling without losing the original’s looks and character, as a result the new Suzuki Hayabusa looks really sleek. Engine capacity had increased and so has power and torque. Handling hasn’t been significantly improved, more a gentle step forward however the brakes are a miles better, and about time.

Engine

The Suzuki Hayabusa has possibly the post powerful production engine on the market, alongside the Kawasaki ZZ-R1400, Suzuki are quoting 194.bhp and 115ftlb of torque for the Hayabusa. The motorcycle isn’t restricted in the lower gears its full power all the way to the 186mph speed limiter.

Quality and Reliability

Cosmetically the Suzuki Hayabusa has been tweaked, especially the back end, and there’s a noticeable difference in the quality of finish. I like the new look, the quality of finish is top shelf, paint is deep, much improved over the original Hayabusa. Being a Hayabusa reliability is unquestionable.

Ride and Handling

Not much has changed on the new Suzuki Hayabusa: same wheelbase, rake and trail. However the shock and front forks have been upgraded and the swing arm strengthened. Thankfully the Hayabusa’s brakes are now radial and do an excellent of stopping the big girl, without any fade even on the track. As you expect from the Suzuki Hayabusa you can’t fling it around but if you ride smoothly it’s very rewarding and with a few tweaks makes a decent track motorcycle

Value

£9000 for arguably the fastest production motorcycle on the planet, that will be enough to see the new Suzuki Haybusa top the sales charts. Quality of finish has vastly improved; it looks sleeker, but still retains that essential Suzuki Hayabusa character

Equipment

Fully adjustable suspension front and rear comes as standard on the new Hayabusa and like every new big Suzuki motorcycle there’s a three-way power switch limiting power. It’s not just a gimmick you really notice the difference between the power modes, making the Hayabusa less of an animal than before.

BMW S1000RR

The BMW S1000RR is a sport bike initially manufactured by BMW Motorrad to compete in the 2009 Superbike World Championship, that is now in commercial production. It was introduced in Munich in April 2008, and is powered by a 999 cc (61.0 cu in) inline-4 engine redlined at 14,200 rpm.
BMW manufactured 1,000 production models in 2009 to satisfy World Superbike homologation requirements, but expanded production for commercial sale of the bike in 2010. It features an anti-lock braking system, standard, with an optional electronic traction control, and has an overall wet weight of 207.7 kg (458 lb), and produces 133.6 kW (179.2 hp) @ 13250 rpm at the rear wheel.

Race bike differences

The factory race bike used in the Superbike World Championship differs in a number of ways from the production bike. Its engine has a higher compression ratio of 14.0:1 compared with 13.0:1, and it delivers over 200 hp (150 kW) at 14,000 rpm, compared with 193 hp (144 kW) at 13,000 rpm. The race bike has a 44 mm Öhlins inverted fork, compared with a 46 mm upside-down fork. It has 16.5-inch front wheel and 16-inch rear wheel instead of 17-inch and an MRA Racing 'Double-Bubble' Windshield. Most significantly it has an unladen wet weight of 162 kg (360 lb)^{[citation needed]} compared with 204 kg (450 lb) for the production model.

Superbike World Championship

On 26 June 2008, Spanish rider Rubén Xaus signed to ride the bike for the factory BMW Motorrad team. On 25 September 2008, Australian former double Superbike World Champion Troy Corser signed to complete the team's two-rider lineup for 2009. In the 2009 Superbike World Championship season, the highest race result achieved by Corser was fifth place in the Czech Republic, and Xaus achieved seventh place in Italy.
In the 2010 Superbike World Championship season, Reitwagen Motorsport are also racing the S1000RR with riders Andrew Pitt, Roland Resch, and Makoto Tamada. As of September 2010 the highest race result was third place for Corser in race two at Monza, and third place in race one at Misano where Troy Corser took BMW's first Superpole with a record lap time of 1 minute 35.001 seconds.

Honda S-Wing 125

The Honda S-Wing is a well-equipped and competitively priced executive scooter that performs a lot better than its functional looks might suggest. Honda is pitching the S-Wing as an up-market urban commuter and in that environment it's a cut above the direct competition.

Engine

It’s hard not to compare the S-Wing to Suzuki’s Burgman 125 – both are maxi-style scooters, both weigh in at 156kg and both cost around £3,400. Thankfully for Honda, the S-Wing has a much nicer and more direct throttle response, feels quicker off the lights and has a little bit of an edge on top speed.

Quality and Reliability

It’s a Honda, so build quality is good and there should be no issues with reliability. However the dash looks a little dated and the leather-effect plastic surround on the cockpit looks a bit naff.

Ride and Handling

The S-Wing is stable all the way up to its 70-ish top speed and supremely comfortable thanks to a huge seat and big footboards. Despite its bulky appearance it’s easy to manoeuvre at slow speed. The combined brakes are very good which makes the S-Wing very reassuring to ride in a busy urban environment - the back brake is almost too strong, because a sharp pull on the lever will easily lock the rear.

Value

At £3,395 the S-Wing is bang in line with the competition in terms of price – the Suzuki Burgman is £3,399. But the S-Wing has the edge slightly on quality and performance. Find a Honda S-Wing 125 for sale.

Equipment

The long side-opening underseat storage bay on the S-Wing is large enough for a full-face helmet with room to spare, but it’s a little shallow. There’s a handy mobile-phone/sunglasses cubby hole in the dash, a 12v power socket and a top-box is available as an optional extra. Riders will find the footwell-mounted filler cap handy and pillions will appreciate the optional backrest. Stainless floor panels pictured are extra. Ducati Streetfighter 848

In all honesty, MCN hadn’t expected great things of this bike. On one hand the new bike was at best surely only a ‘lesser’ version of the already aging Streetfighter 1098 – a bike that has slipped down the appeal ladder due to its £14,695 cost (Streetfighter S model only for 2012) and overpowering performance.

On the other, even though significantly cheaper than the 1198 version, at £10,121 it’s still much pricier than likely rivals such as Triumph’s Street Triple and MV’s Brutale 920. But then you get to ride a demonstrator and suddenly you’ll be smitten – especially if riding in the twisties, where it’s racing pedigree shines through in its chassis. Couple this with a far more user-friendly engine than the 1098 version and you get a modern, sporty, naked Ducati that works.

Engine

Take the engine; a high performing 849cc V-twin. It’s racing heritage of Testastretta engine with Desmodromic valve actuation, oval inlet manifolds and is nothing else but a smaller version of its still conquering 1198 racing weapon. With a claimed 132bhp and 69ftlb of torque, it’s a potent little beast.

That Testastretta engine is strong. Pull away with a fistful and the bike responds with little clutch action to smooth the V-twin pulses and crank clatter for clean drive. Even with the traction control turned off, the simple action of rolling open the throttle hard isn’t enough to loft the front wheel. But clutch it with revs and 848 becomes a wheelie champion from Italy. The engine feels lazy like Ducati’s of old. It doesn’t tear off in a blaze of revs but rushes forward. It’s deceptive.

Quality and Reliability

Ducatis are exotic, high-priced performers with iffy reliability records… Sorry, but this is wrong. Ducati’s record level is actually very high and getting better all the time thanks to a big push on build quality. Ducati will, however, always be considered exotic because of its Italian breeding of design flair, beauty, sporting genes and technology.

Ride and Handling

The Streetfighter 848’s ace card is the perfect balance of chassis and engine. Engine braking complements the rider’s decision to slow down. Brake hard and the chassis doesn’t get fazed; no lifting rear wheel; no serious dive to cause the front end to pirouette around the headstock.
There’s so much feel from the tyres that waiting for that last yard or two to tip in for high corner speed becomes the norm. Not even a deft touch of brakes mid corner fails to upset the bike. The simple matter of raising the height of the one-piece handlebars by 20mm is in answer to Streetfighter 1098 customer feedback and it makes a big difference to rider comfort. It gives a sit-in the saddle riding position rather than being stretched on ye olde torture rack. Overall the rider feels in control from the off.

Value

There’s quite a good sized chunk of technology about the Streetfighter 848 and at just over £10k we are paying for it. Triumph’s Speed Triple is cheaper and with the two bikes tackling each other on the road will make for interesting reading. Ducati’s are always more expensive, it’s the nature of the beast.

Equipment

Add to this a battle proven chassis of single-sided swingarm, Brembo radial calipers, fully adjustable Marzocchi USD front forks and Sachs rear shock, and you know the Streetfighter 848 is a sporty little number, in every sense of the word, with upright handlebars. There’s also eight-way adjustable traction control (DTC) and it’s wired up ready to play with a basic data-acquisition (DDA) system to read back throttle position, rpm, speed, gear selection etc. There’s also the connections in place for a Ducati Performance accessory quick shifter to be used.
The Streetfighter 848 also comes with Pirelli Diablo Corsa 3 tyres. Varied compound tyres that are durable but sticky on the edges where it matters. What is different, though, is the fitment of 180/60 profile rear tyre instead of the tried and trusted 180/55. This is a first on any production bike.

CCM R30

The CCM R30 comes in two versions with two different wheel options. First there’s the older motorcycles with the Austrian made Rotax motor made until mid-2002, then there’s the Suzuki XF650 Freewind-powered version made from then on. You can chose between cast or spoked wheels – the spoked ones arguably look better and work better when using the motorcycle off-road, but you’ll need to run tubes in the wheels.

Engine

The older Rotax 598cc motor in early CCM R30 motorcycles can be tweaked for more power, but the 644cc Suzuki item in later motorcycles is more reliable – and there’s big bore kit available, too. Both SOHC lumps are quite smooth for single-cylinders. The later CCM R30’s gearbox is noticeably slicker, too and its service intervals are a whopping 4000 miles apart. Avoid motorways like the plague.

Quality and Reliability

CCM motorcycles built between 2002 and 2004 (when they went briefly bust) don’t enjoy the best reputation for reliability and quality control. Swingarms pit, frames rust, base gaskets go (a fault addressed by Suzuki but not, apparently, passed on by CCM), exhaust welds snap and, rarely, the shock mount snaps at the swingarm.

Ride and Handling

All the CCM R30 needs is some sticky tyres and the fully adjustable WP forks, shock and narrow seat will let nothing come between you and a ridiculous angle of lean. Except piles should you prosecute very long rides very often. The four-piston Brembos offer great braking with both power and feel. Now you can add stoppies to your motorcycle stunt repertoire.

Value

Post-2005 motorcycles are much better built and the only CCM R30s that make the grade as a broadly worry-free purchase. If you’re mechanically competent and can pick one up for a good price then you can be more confident about earlier motorcycles, but otherwise it’s better to save your cash

The CCM R30's componentry is top drawer, but there’s little else to embellish the CCM R30 – after all strict minimalism is sine qua non to the supermoto motorcycle role.

MZ Baghira (2001-2007)

The MZ Baghira is a great bike for taking you to work or throwing you around mountainsides at weekends, the Baghira’s a torquey little beast with brilliant, light handling. Cornering’s hilarious. In town, that towering seat comes in handy. Quirky looks and a good price should make it real competition against its rivals

The ubiquitous Yamaha XT660 engine strikes again in the MZ Baghira: the liquid cooled, four stroke single powers other steeds such as the MT-03 and Aprilia’s Pegaso Strada. Gutsy down low, it propels the bike around town and corners like there’s no tomorrow. It can cruise at 80mph and peaks at around 100mph but the rider’s likely to have passed out by then. Carbed, not injected.

Quality and Reliability

Excellent, which surprises those who don’t equate MZ with quality… Things have changed. The Baghira boasts plastic parts made by Acerbis, an engine by Yamaha and WP suspension and is, overall, very well put together. Finish is very good, and seems to last well, and that engine’s proved itself more than capable over the years.

Ride and Handling

Forget dual purpose, the MZ Baghira is a street bike, perfect for negotiating rush hours and school run traffic. Loads of grunt, good brakes, tall seat: it’s ideal. Take it out on the twisties, tweak the suspension to suit (it’s quite soft as standard) and the handling’s magical. Slightly vibey though, steer clear of motorways and it’s pretty lardy for this type of bike…

Value

For a commuter/weekend fling, the MZ Baghira’s pretty good value. What’s more, parts are affordable, fuel economy’s great, insurance is a pittance and reliability means garage bills should be minimal. Yamaha’s own XT660X is an option at more money for less power while KTM’s lovely 640 Duke may be cooler and hold its value well but it costs significantly more.

Equipment

The MZ Baghira's seat is very tall, the bars are wide and you ride close to the tank, supermoto-style. There are basic clocks, pillion provision (optimistic) including grabrails, a fairly small tank and a funky, chunky (and heavy) pipe. The single headlight’s not great. A lower seat/shorter wheelbased option is available too: 850mm/1465mm (down from 900mm/1530mm).

Model History

2001: MZ Baghira launched, a more road-going option to the original, Enduro machine (and very similar in spec to the marque’s Mastiff model). No changes since.

Other Versions

MZ Baghira Enduro: Launched in 1998, the more off-road version has a taller seat, semi-knobbly tyres and weighs about 10kg less. Current.
MZ Baghira Black Panther: Launched in 2001, it’s the same as the Street Moto but painted all black. Current.
