Arundhati Roy The God of Small Things 1997, Flamingo 340 pages Book bought in: Moab, Utah, USA  Seldom while reading have I found my heart aching and my eyes watering when only at page 5.   The God of Small Things, set in India, is a story of a family torn apart by the wish to love, but more so, the desire to be loved.   Seen through the eyes of Estha and Rahel (twins, one soul), the story, which starts off with the funeral of the twins' cousin Sophie Mol, unravels through memories and the personal histories of the characters involved. A tragic plot – but in that sense also refreshing. Nowadays we live in a society which longs mostly for happy endings.   Ah, society. Oppressor of many, because what matters is what the masses think is right and best. What is it about our constant worry of what others would think?   In this novel, and perhaps through it, Roy confronts an irrational society which tries to decide how individuals should live and love. Sadly, a society kept alive by the very people it tries to control. Even if it means sacrificing romance, friendship, family, children's innocence.  Children, innocent.   Children, Estha and Rahel. Children, unaware of the cruelty against those defying society – those who'd rather follow their hearts for a chance of happiness. And that is what makes this book a jewel.   The childlike view on the horrible consequences of trying to make a decision for yourself, in a world full of (let's face it) stupid ideals and morals. The childlike view you kind of wish we'd all still have. The childlike view that sees no black or white. Communist or capitalist. Religious or atheist. Rich or poor.   But which instead sees silver jets in a blue church sky.  A Fountain in a Love-in-Tokyo.   5/5.  January 9th 2007.   This was no easy book to review. And it is not necessarily an easy book to read. If not, take your own time and make surprising discoveries. Not however for those who do not like clutter and are claustrophobic. There were rumors of the store closing once upon a time but thankfully it has survived. Spread over three floors, the collection is huge. There are separate floors for fiction, non-fiction, travel, humor etc as well as management books and research materials. The books are well-arranged and you can always ask the staff for assistance. This is a pavement book stall on Church Street, next to KC Das outlet, run by an ever-smiling and courteous staff. You get a very wonderful variety of Indian as well as foreign magazines (on every topic, from women to auto) and newspapers here. The same people have a spacious outlet called Magazines at the joint of Church Street and Brigade Road. They stock old and new magazines from India and overseas. Some of the older issues of foreign magazines are available at an 80% discount. H. Thomas would have been aware of the distribution of the variety of stones foreign to Stonehenge (around Great Britain at least) and in 1923 placed their origin in the Prescelly Mountains, Pembrokeshire, Wales. In his opinion this location offers not only petrographically identical rocks but also representations of all varieties of the Stonehenge Bluestones in the immediate neighborhood. Thomas also points to the importance of the area as one of the richest collections of megalithic remains in Britain which was brought to his attention by the writings of the late Revd. W. Done Bushell who describes Prescelly as a 'pre-historic Westminster' and its southern slopes as 'a land of circles' where exist traces of at least eight stone circles. Even the sandstone used in the so-called "Altar Stone" at Stonehenge was traced to an area of coastline in Wales associated with the Prescelly-Stonehenge route. This is typical of the totally unscientific way in which the archeological interpretation of Stonehenge is reinforced.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Let's prove Prescelly was the source of the Bluestones by looking for the other foreign stones in the same place!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Who decided that all the stones had to come from one location in the first place, and why?  &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Are the dolerites unique to Prescelly and, if not, to what extent are they distributed across the country (or the European continent for that matter)?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Prescelly is not exactly 'on the way' to Stonehenge by any route, so is there evidence in favor of obtaining individual types of stone from more accessible sources?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Are there any other areas where the varieties occur in combination and, apart from Prescelly, where are the closest possible sources for (say) 75% of the stones?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;To what extent was Thomas' conclusion influenced by prevailing opinion for the source was, as had been expected for 150 years, in the deposits of igneous rock lying to the west of Stonehenge (1)?&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;There are many more examples of such 'scientific license'; facts and features which have been overlooked in the ongoing effort to place Stonehenge in a very &lt;i&gt;British&lt;/i&gt; Neolithic landscape. Yes, the spotted dolerites are almost certainly from Prescelly but in limiting the search for other stones to this area they may be missing other important connections.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;More recently Professors Timothy Darvill and Geoffrey Wainwright have undertaken a minor excavation of Stonehenge in an attempt to provide a date for the arrival of the Bluestones on site.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The Profs believe these particular stones were important in Neolithic times for their medicinal properties and, having mapped quarries in the Prescelly Mountains, claim that the dolerites (of which the inner oval of Bluestones at Stonehenge is comprised) derive almost wholly from a rocky outcrop at the summit of a broad ridge and the rhyolites and tuffs (which together with dolerites are found in the outer Bluestone circle) appear in the surrounding volcanic dykes. The petrology may be beyond doubt but the healing quality of these stones is not. In 25 years of studying the region, local expert and internationally published author, Robin Heath, has never come across any firm evidence to suggest that the Bluestones were revered in recorded history, let alone prehistory, as having healing properties any more than other wells across the British Isles and cites a local farmer in challenging Wainwright's 'extensive research' of the aforementioned dolerite outcrop (2). The Profs failed in the search for a date but did open the lid on another archeological oversight; the site has been subjected to major re-orderings in the past which casts doubt on its age.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If Prescelly is the source of the stones the next question must be, "Why Stonehenge?"&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Even if the 4 ton stones were imbued with magical powers it still does not answer the question why anyone would want to transport eighty of them over a distance of at least 140 miles when it is clear that the Prescelly 'land of circles' already offered extensive health facilities. Did they represent the spoils of war to invaders from Salisbury (a battle I would have lost willingly at the thought of taking the prize home)? A legend of stones having been erected in memory of soldiers fallen in battle is credited to Geoffrey of Monmouth, a 12th century clergyman obsessed with the wizard, Merlin. These stones, originally from Africa, were brought by magic from their current location on Mount Killaraus in Ireland to Stonehenge. From his description of their size it would appear the author is referring to the massive Sarsen stones, however, he also claims that their original use was in curing ills (by bathing in water that had been poured over the stones) which ties in with the Bluestone's medicinal powers. Bluestone was also used extensively in the production of axe heads and battle axes, and dolerite in general was popular as far afield as Egypt where it was used to make tools, but if Bluestone was prized for anything more than this could we not expect to see more evidence of its use at other prehistoric sites? Stanton Drew in Somerset (on the route from Prescelly), The Rollrights in Oxfordshire, Lamorna in Cornwall and Arbor Low in Derbyshire are all (more or less) as close to the Prescelly Hills as Stonehenge yet contain only locally acquired granite, limestone and shale. Neither is there evidence of Bluestone having been used in the construction of neighboring Neolithic sites at Silbury, Avebury or Durrington Walls - not even a token altar stone.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Whatever the reason for their presence the Bluestones serve as yet another feature to set Stonehenge apart from every other megalithic site.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;This does not seem to matter to archeologists who have decided the period in which Stonehenge belongs and again, as with every other feature unique to the site, all subsequent research has been directed to proving Neolithic Man capable of its construction, in this case, the transportation of Bluestones from Prescelly using the most rudimentary of vessels (again without success). According to Professor Olwen Williams-Thorpe there is little evidence to support the use of anything but local stone in the construction of megalithic structures (3). She supports the idea, originally put forward by Professor J. W. Judd in 1901, that the Bluestones were ripped from their beds and deposited by glaciers (4), however, it is a view widely disputed by geologists and archeologists. D. Q. Bowen, Professor of Earth Sciences at Cardiff University, used Chlorine-36 dating to show how at least one sample of igneous rock from Stonehenge was first exposed to the air 14,000 years ago (5). This contradicts heavily the retreat of glaciers from Salisbury Plain from which we could expect a date more in the region of 400,000 years. Thorpe and colleagues were quick to respond (6); Chlorine-36 dating gives an estimate of the length of time that a rock surface has been exposed to the atmosphere, by measuring the amount of Chlorine-36 produced by exposure of the rock to cosmic radiation. If the rock or surface has been covered or buried, the date obtained will reflect the reduced time of exposure to air. Thus a Chlorine-36 date may reflect either recent exposure of a surface due to processes such as frost shattering, or an original exposure date. Bowen also sampled the surfaces of outcrops at Carn Menyn, the 'known' source of dolerites in Prescelly, returning dates one thousand years before the Bluestones are supposed to have arrived at Stonehenge. What does this mean?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The lack of any activity at the Prescelly quarry before, during and after construction of Stonehenge combined with the very early date of a sample from the site is clear indication of the Bluestone's use in another, much earlier setting.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The rings of Q and R Holes at Stonehenge are further evidence that an initial stone structure had been relocated. The holes, set in two concentric circles within the larger Sarsen circle, originally held the Bluestones but this otherwise symmetrical design was never completed. The central axis of the design, like the later Sarsen setting, is aligned in the general direction of sunrise at the summer solstice and there are even examples on site of Bluestone Trilithons. It is inconceivable to presume anyone capable of designing and building such a structure would miscalculate the amount of stone required or simply abandon construction three-quarters of the way through in favor of a more ambitious design in local Stone, so something must have happened to change their minds; perhaps a cargo was lost, the journey became too perilous or the original site became inaccessible.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Location and distance are never obstacles when it comes to selecting material (7). The decision to use Bluestone and their source are irrelevant to the location of Stonehenge; its current orientation towards sunrise on the summer solstice and the relationship between Sun and Moon marked by the much later addition of four "Station Stones" equally so. The site was chosen for its geographical similarity to the original location of the Bluestones at Dowth in Ireland. This henge, overlooked by every other author on the subject of Stonehenge, is also set on the northeast face of a gently sloping hill close to a river (the Boyne). Its bank remains intact at a width of 6m (20ft) and height of 3-4m (13ft), the same dimensions as the original bank at Stonehenge, and, like Stonehenge, is punctuated by an entrance at the northeast.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Perhaps there is an element of truth in the legend of Merlin and the Stones, after all, legends are usually corruptions of the truth over a long period of time, but did the stones originate from Africa? Well, only an archeologist would deny it outright without proof! Ironically, the Dowth henge is as close to Prescelly as is Stonehenge and on a route that can be traversed almost entirely by water. Another possible source of stone closer to Dowth and equally accessible by sea is Slieve Foye, a mountain of igneous outcrops behind the coastal town of Carlingford, 40km to the north. Has it been the subject of 'extensive research'? Topology is not the only reason for choosing Stonehenge as a site for the relocated Bluestone structure. The most important factor restricted possible locations to within a zone no more than 1-2km (1 mile) north or south of the latitude of Dowth.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Dean Talboys is a consultant systems analyst. McKenzie&lt;br/&gt; &lt;p&gt;"An important book is one which had a profound effect when printed and which continues to exert influence; important books are in large part desirable because collectors - affected by the book in some way - want a copy."&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;These "important books" cross over into Collectible, Rare and Antiquarian books.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Take for example 1984. Truly this was an important book as it was about the future and people wanted a copy. But, it is also rare if you are looking for a first edition, first printing, with a dust jacket and fine condition..&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If a book becomes an important, like 1984, then it will probably become at first a collectible, because it was not old when it was first printed, but when it has stood the test of time, it will become rare. But hundreds of years from this moment, it will be considered antiquarian.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Everybody has there favorite book. Mine is Noble House by James Clavell. Set in Hong Kong it is the story of two Tai-pan's and seven days in the business life of this city built by pirates. For me, I wanted a first edition. Through the years I have picked up my share of first editions. But, they are getting difficult to find in good condition. Now does this mean that it is going to be worth thousands of dollars? Well, not right now, but down the road someday, there going to go up in price. Everyday, books are lost to floods, fire and garage sells. They are not printing anymore first editions, so all of Clavell's books could be worth something in the future. Already I priced any of eshis early hard bounds at $25.00. More for his first book.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If enough people also like this book then it might become collectible.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Those people who have a private library, from one shelf to twenty or more bookcases all have important books.  It might be said that an important book is one that you don't want to get rid of just yet. I have about thirty boxes I will be clutching on my deathbed.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;When you go into a bookstore, you actually cherry pick the store. You take out the books you can afford and really want to own and read.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I have been in situations where people who are selling off their collections but won't go through the books if somebody else has gone through them. They think the bt has been cherry picked by other dealers.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;But everybody has different tastes. Everybody collects or sells different types of books. Yes, we all have Stephen King and Anne Rice. But we don't necessarily have the same books at the same time. There is room for everybody.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Would I pass up a pile of books because a dealer or a book scout had already gone through them. Nope, I will be there in spades to see what I can dig up. The flip of the coin is, someday they will be following me. I have left thrift stores when new books are being shelved and there is a scout working the shelves and checking each row as the books appear. They were there first and I know he is looking for what he considers "important books" and I leap frog to my next target area to see what I can find. Important books - something for everybody, and that's the beauty of books.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I recommend highly investigating being a full time or part time Book Scout. If you need $20 or $100 tomorrow a book scout is trained to put cash in their pockets everyday. Book Sellers need books. When a Book Scout knows the tricks of the business, they can put cash in their pocket everyday. I know, I was a full time Book Scout and owned two Used Book Stores for over then years. The Compleat Gamester is a guide to just that. It was written in 1674 as a handbook for people of the time to learn how to play games that were currently popular. And it is still widely available today. It is a great way to learn about what kinds of games people played during the Middle Ages. And it is also lends insight into understanding how that period of time still has a tremendous influence on today's world. Many of the games in the book are still played today.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The Compleat Gamester is a book about games and gaming that was written by Charles Cotton in 1674 which is right in the middle of the European Renaissance. It is also a book that has had quite a long life having been re-printed many times. It is still very readily available today and the last printing of it was in 1970. Many libraries carry copies of it and plenty of copies can be found at any online book store.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The book gives us a wonderful insight into the leisure activities of the period and these games are divided into several general categories including card games, table games, board games, and outdoor games.  The card games include Whisk and Cribbage. The board games include Chess and Backgammon. The table games section includes billiards and the outdoor games, which to me are the most interesting, include archery, bowling, horsemanship and cock fighting.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;There are also lots of games that seem to be lost to the passage of time. These games include card games named L'Ombre, Queen Nazareen Lanterloo, and Beast. And they include games without cards such as Ketch-Dolt and Sice-Ace.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Another interesting insight into the Middle Ages that we can derive from this book is the sensitivity to the class and caste system. The author often makes comments and observations about the games and what kinds of people play them. This is first revealed to us in the full title of the book which is "The Compleat Gamester or, Instructions how to Play at all manner of usual and Genteel games".  This sensitivity is most prevalent in how he describes the scene of bowling as a place for rooks where three things are thrown more than the balls. These are time, money, and curses. He characterizes bowling as being a healthy sport yet something that is more for the rough and tumble commoner crowd. And it's funny how that stigma of bowling being a common persons sport still remains with us today. It makes one wonder if he is the guy that started that whole stigma about bowling.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;About the book&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Having been written over three hundred years ago the language of the book can sometimes be a bit awkward but it is beautifully done and it is loaded with great illustrations. The very first edition of this book was published in 1674 by Charles Cotton and it is the second most common alternate usage of the word Complete. The most common, and most famous, use of this alternate spelling is of course for the Compleat Angler which was written by a friend of Charles Cotton's father. Charles, his father, and the author of the Compleat Angler used to go fishing a lot when Charles was a boy. So it is easy to see where the inspiration for the book and its peculiar title came from.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If you are interested in Medieval Period things and games in general, you might want to give this book a look. It covers many of the fundamental s of what to do/what not to do in working with dichroic glass and could save the novice many failed attempts.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Any glass artist should have a selection of books to guide them as a source of inspiration and reference. Dichroic Glass artists in particular should have this book in their library.  It's fantastic for those, 'I know what I'll try' moments as they tend to have been covered within the book and it can save a very expensive dichroic disaster!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The book has 64 pages of excellent projects, covering topics such as stenciling. It is one of the very rare books of it's kind were it is worth actually sitting down and reading the book cover to cover, as apposed to thumbing through it till you get to a project you want to try.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A few of it's 'golden rules' are slightly questionable but perhaps they are open to debate between experienced glass artists who know how far to take their particular medium.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Overall, this book is excellent-the only criticism being that there is a definite kiln worker bias to the book, with flameworking not really covered in too much depth. It is quite difficult to find someone who has not seen, touched, and read at least one book in his or her lifetime. Today, authors write books on nearly every subject be it arts, science, commerce, history, literature, poetry, and other contemporary subjects.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Publishing and printing of books has become easier and more widespread since the invention of the printing press. Earlier, books were copied and written by hand, making books expensive and rare. Let us travel a little back in time to discover the journey that books have taken since first known to humankind.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;History: &lt;br&gt;The word 'book' comes from an Old English word called 'bMc". According to the popular site thefreedictionary.com, a book in modern terms is "A set of written, printed, or blank pages fastened along one side and encased between protective covers."&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The early Mesopotamians wrote books on clay tablets. The ancient Egyptians wrote on papyrus rolls in Egypt as early as 3000 B.C. In China, bamboo strips tied together with chords served as books. These dated back to around 1300 B.C. In ancient India, seers and sages wrote ancient religious texts on palm leaves - nature's paper. These early writers would preserver these books for posterity and hand them down from one generation to another for preservation and dissemination of knowledge.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;By the 19th century, printers could no longer meet the demand for books by hand printing. The printing press and the moveable type press, attributed to Johannes Gutenberg, changed the scenario, thus bringing the cost of books down to a considerable level. Johannes Gutenberg is also credited with printing the first real book - the Gutenberg Bible, using the movable type printing press.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Large presses followed this invention, thus making it possible for larger books to be printed. Further advances were made during the mid 1800s. For example, the invention of the paper making machine, binding machinery, the cylinder press and the linotype machine made it possible for books to be printed in large numbers. In modern times, books are printed using a number of sophisticated processes, which require special attention out of scope of this article.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Classification of Books: &lt;br&gt;Books are classified into various types according to their content. A popular segregation is fiction and non-fiction books. Fiction books contain largely fictitious material, such as novels, which are the most common form of fictional books. Typically, novels consist of a plot, setting, themes, and character.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Non-fictional books usually provide useful information as opposed to fiction books. A common type of non-fiction book usually found in libraries is the reference book. Other books can include handbooks, almanacs, encyclopedias, atlases, instruction manuals, and others. School and college textbooks are come under the non-fictional category. Other non-functional books can take the form of directories, address books, phone books, appointment books, logbooks and diaries.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Another popular method of classifying books is by the type of covers they are provided with. Accordingly, they can be classified as hard cover and paper back books. Just beautiful words written with such a flowing grace that you are carried into a special world.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Why do people return to the classics?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Because the quality of their writing is of such elegance that it can't be compared to some of the modern fiction writers of today.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;An excerpt from David Copperfield by Charles Dickens:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I discovered afterwards that Miss Lavinia was an authority in affairs of the heart, by reason of there having anciently existed a certain Mr. Pidger, who played short whist, and was supposed to have been enamoured of her. My private opinion is, that this was entirely a gratuitous assumption, and that Pidger was altogether innocent of any such sentiments - to which he had never given any sort of expression that I could ever hear of. Both Miss Lavinia and Miss Clarissa had a superstition, however, that he would have declared his passion, if he had not been cut short in his youth (at about sixty) by over-drinking his constitution, and over-doing an attempt to set it right again by swilling Bath water. They had a lurking suspicion even, that he died of secret love; though I must say there was a picture of him in the house with a damask nose, which concealment did not appear to have ever preyed upon.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Wonderful!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I recommend highly investigating being a full time or part time Book Scout. If you need $20 or $100 tomorrow a book scout is trained to put cash in their pockets everyday. You need an extra $1000 a month, you can do it. Book Sellers need books. When a Book Scout knows the tricks of the business, they can put cash in their pocket everyday. I know, I was a full time Book Scout and owned two Used Book Stores for over then years. Can these claims really be true? I decided to buy Master Mentalism to find out the truth. The whole package is actually four books each covering different aspects of performing magic. The main book is 269 pages and it is broken down into six major sections which are mentalism, interviews with experts, levitation, card tricks, hypnosis and mind reading.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The section I liked most out of the main book was the one on mentalism, it contained a lot of tricks which would not take too much time for anyone to master. Tricks such as heads or tails, book test, find the lady, a coin in the hand and many other cool tricks which I really liked. But the one thing I did not really like was the fact that there were no videos to show us how to perform the actual tricks. Although Ryan did really go into detail on each of the tricks, I still believed that it would have being much better if he had put up some videos teaching us how to perform these tricks.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The Bottomline&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If you are interested in learning how to perform magic tricks, master mentalism is one of the best books out there. It does not matter whether you have never performed magic before, there are so many tricks in the book that you must be able to perform one of them. Alexander and Thomas L. Berg. 1965.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Real academic and time tested business advice throughout this reference book. Part I and II are basic fundamentals such a marketing research, job descriptions of marketers, product management, product mix and studying the market. Part III has specific advice for retail and wholesale businesses on channel distribution, while Part IV discusses how to implement and design a real world marketing plan. The author still shows that things have always been changing and uses the locomotive as an example.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In relation to work and career the writer tells us of how business is changing and how those changes clash with the status quo and the old way of doing things. He talks about marketing, management, supply chains, the workforce, the government regulations, ethics, associations, and the transitional aspects of current change. (remember the book was written in 1984, but the case study of those changes back then are so interesting.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The final Part of the book, Part VI, is all about modifying yourself to adapt to these changes in your life, work and other endeavors, so that you are not left behind, wondering what had happened. The sad thing was that I believed him.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;For the most part, I was deeply unhappy during my teen years. I never felt good enough or accepted. I didn't know what self-love felt like, and I didn't understand &lt;i&gt;how&lt;/i&gt; to feel better about myself and my life.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;From years of verbal abuse, physical beatings with a belt, unfair treatment, and degradation, I felt worthless.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;When the Pain Hurts Too Much&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Because I felt so bad about myself, I began to look for anything that would make me feel better. Of course, back then I was looking outside of me, because I hadn't yet learned that the feeling of being good enough could only come from &lt;i&gt;inside&lt;/i&gt; of me.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I tried to mold my appearance to copy famous rock stars and actresses. I tried to look cool by wearing whatever clothes I thought would make me popular. I went along with what other teens were doing, things that in the beginning I really didn't want to do, because I didn't know that I actually had options.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;For example, back in the 1970s when I was a teen; drugs were everywhere, especially in school. I remember so vividly &lt;i&gt;not&lt;/i&gt; wanting to try drugs, but I did try them-only because I wanted &lt;i&gt;acceptance.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The Outsider's Search for Acceptance: At What Price?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;When I tried drugs in high school, I honestly did &lt;i&gt;not&lt;/i&gt; feel any better about myself than I did before I tried them. Then I tried more drugs just to numb my emotional pain. The sad part was that once the high wore off, the emotional pain was right there waiting for me.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;It didn't help me at all when I did drugs for six years in my early teens. It truly didn't make me feel better about myself. It didn't turn around the lies I believed about myself, and it didn't help me turn anything else around for the better, either.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Eventually, I got sick and tired of trying drugs to be cool or feel better because they didn't do a damn thing for me in the self-worth department. I &lt;i&gt;still&lt;/i&gt; felt worthless, the way most outsiders do.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;i&gt;What massive lesson did I learn?&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Drugs that got me wasted were a complete waste of my time.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Looking Cool or Being Cool&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I went through every phase of trying to look cool to be accepted. Whatever was "in" I &lt;i&gt;had&lt;/i&gt; to have. I wasted a lot of money buying things just to &lt;i&gt;feel&lt;/i&gt; cool, important, special, and good enough. I wanted to feel part of the "in" crowd. What no one ever taught me was that there is a big difference between looking cool and being cool.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Copycats&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I used to copy how other people looked, thinking that if I looked like them, then I would somehow be better than I was. I didn't have my own identity, and I didn't know &lt;i&gt;how&lt;/i&gt; to have my own identity.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The purpose of this book is to help you learn how to turn unhappiness around from the &lt;i&gt;inside out&lt;/i&gt; so you can break the vicious merry-go-round cycle of trying everything outside of yourself to feel better, trying everything to feel that you belong, trying not to feel like an outsider. Believe it or not, many, many adults I work with &lt;i&gt;still&lt;/i&gt; feel the same way about themselves as they did when they were teenagers. It is only by learning how to turn all of the unhappiness around that it finally makes the most awesome and positive difference.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;That is the most important thing you can get from this book: learning how to transform any low feelings you have about yourself. I can assure you that you were not born with those feelings.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I will tell you this right off the bat: that if you don't think you're an awesome person, you're wrong. The author has combined her various skills and created a funny, quick-witted mystery with a great lead character named Fifi Cutter.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Freeman is not only an author, but an attorney and artist. Starting out as an insurance attorney, she decided on being a Renaissance woman and began writing. Her first novel MURDER...SUICIDE...WHATEVER introduced Fifi to the reading world. Her acrylic paintings have been featured in TV shows such as Boston Legal, Frasier and Everybody Loves Raymond, as well as in major motion pictures.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;With all these talents, Freeman put them all to work in CRAZY FOOL KILLS. The irreverent Fifi and her half brother/ half uninvited roommate Bosco help out Fifi's Bennington College friend Victoria J. Smith-attorney for one of the deceased's relatives.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The story revolves around a $60 million dollar wrongful death case against Skyblu Charter Jet Service whose deranged ex-employee hijacked and crashed a private plane, killing all 4 people aboard and an innocent unsuspecting retiree who was crushed by the remains of the fuselage while sitting on the porch of his double wide.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Fifi comes on-board as both a document clear/investigator and Mean Girl Friday to legendary Chinatown trial attorney, Reginald Wong who is the lawyer for the passengers on the downed airplane. Starting off by trying to get the goods on the man she's replaced as clerk for workers compensation fraud, Fifi winds up following the "money". Her investigation of Steve Burton, the less-than-invalid ex-document clerk and the wrongful death cases come together. Fifi and her brother Bosco get themselves involved in strange relationships, fake (then real and successful!) photography exhibits, extortion, kidnapping and several more murders.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Freeman adds some broken down car pursuits, huge dogs, a drunken judge, a crazy brother and a love interest for her amusing investigator and her brother to deal with-all at break neck speed.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;As with many really good mysteries, just when you think you've got the plot figured out the author zigzags us around an unknown piece of information, real or perceived and leads us in a totally different direction.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;CRAZY FOOL KILLS 5 is the second Fifi Cutter novel. I enjoyed the personality of our endearing insurance investigator-hopefully, since this seems to becoming a series, Freeman explains more of her background in detail. We know she has a good-looking half brother in Bosco, another half brother who is on the LAPD and a late father who was an attorney. Briefly, Fifi tells us that her mother was not much of a wife, mother or human being in general.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;While the plot was more than interesting, I'd love for a bit more details on some of the other main characters-if only to round out and explain some of their actions/reactions to some of the predicaments that arise.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;But this is a great vacation or rainy day read-Enjoy!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Carine Nadel is on The Reader's Advisory Panel of Woman's Day magazine and has had numerous articles and recipes published both on various websites and print publications.
