On The Run has really been 'on the run' ever since their formation in December 2008. Their gig calendar is choc-a-block with one exciting show after another. Needless to say, they've never looked back once.

On The Run's musical style can typically be described as Alt/Punk, especially when their lead vocalist hits those slightly off-key, but immensely effective notes that are such a trademark of the genre. The riffs are (mostly) decidedly alt/rock, though. 'Monsters Like Me' is their most popular track 'til date, and rightly so! The best part about On The Run's music is that each of their songs has a unique hook that'll keep you interested no matter how many times you've heard the songs before. Another of my personal favorites is 'Leave Me Alone.'
I am a teetotaller, but Shawn James’s music made me want to
lock myself in a basement with exposed red brick walls, break out the Scotch
and drink myself into blissful oblivion while he sang of love, loss and life.
Don’t get me wrong, his music isn’t depressing – on the contrary, it is quite
profound. I have yet to find a fledgling artist who puts so much emotion into
the lyrics and the melodies that you can’t help but listen with rapt attention.

Influenced by the likes of Son House, Robert Johnson and Ray
Charles among others, and steeped in years of singing Gospel in the local
church, Shawn’s music has “aged” beautifully and acquired a soulful quality
that conveys many emotions at once. His debut album Shadows is a brilliant
piece of work if ever I’ve seen any. His lyrics are honest, well-written and
have a significant connection to the kind of music he makes. Perhaps what makes
him stand out among others is his ability to use his voice as the
“do-all-and-be-all” of the compositions. There is hardly any percussion; none,
I would say. An acoustic guitar, and sometimes a violin and a tambourine, is
all that is used in way of accompaniments.

“Shadows” opens with the lead track “The Wanderer”. It is an upbeat
track in the manner of old-timey Gospel Blues, but not obsolete. I think this
is the track where Shawn makes his personal statement as an artist – a kind of
“Hello, I’m ____” tag that tells you who this man is, and what he thinks he is.

It is followed by “The Shadow”, an out and out Chicago Blues track. Great
harmonica riffs.

But the track I loved most was “Midnight Dove”. The imagery of
the lyrics coupled with the flow of the melody is quite fantastic. The strains
of violin build a melancholy atmosphere, while the lyrics talk of hope. The
song starts on a subdued note but crescendos into a controlled chorus, thus keeping
true to the allegory of breaking through the barriers of hopelessness to find
hope again. This could very well be a lullaby! (Check out Shawn’s website for
the story behind the song).

What I like about this album is that the melody isn’t
forced; it follows a natural stream of progression, which makes it very
soothing and expressive. Not once do you feel like a song could have ended
differently, or a refrain could have been reworked. Of his inspiration he says, "Growing up in church also had a huge impact on my musical
ability and tastes as well. Seeing how people could be emotionally moved by
music opened my eyes to the ability to control emotions through music." Adopting a very personal approach to playing live shows is also an integral part of the 'Shawn James musical experience'. And what might that be? "I moved to Fayetteville(with my beautiful wife)
in January of this year and have made playing music my only job," he says. "It's going
great because I've figured out how to make it work. It's not just through CD sales and playing shows, but also busking in the streets and playing farmer's
markets and such. I like to bring people not only a show that's setup but also
a raw version of myself and my music that a lot of today's musicians just don't
do. Fayetteville has been extremely supportive of me and I love it here."

Check out the videos for "Midnight Dove" and "The Shadow" here:

My only grouse is that the production values in some songs
are a wee bit sketchier than I’d have liked. The vocal and instrumental tracks
don’t seem to have mixed properly. But other than that, this is an excellent
work of art and you should definitely keep in your Blues collection.

Verdict: Folk
and Blues has always been a potent combination, but it was never this
intoxicating!

Have a Listen: Xavier Leong

A few days ago, I got a request from this kid in NYC for a review of his self-produced rap/hip-hop project. Now, I don't know much about that genre and I was honest enough to admit it to him. But still, I couldn't help but encourage the chap in what he's doing. Xavier Leong may not be a prodigy or anything, but he sure enough is passionate about what he does. "One of my main influences for my upcoming projects is Bedroom," he says. I don't know what or how much to make of his music, but feel like he needs constructive criticism from people who can really help him with his goal of making good music. So, if you are one of such good Samaritans, feel free to drop him a comment on his SoundCloud account or his FB page.

"Dude! You've totally stopped writing on that blog of yours. Wassup with that?"
"Yeah, sorry. Just didn't find stuff good enough to write about?"
"Are you kidding me? There're are some really cool artists out there. You mean to tell me the world's run out of good music? Pffft! Admit it, you're a lazy bum."

That was a conversation I had with a friend of mine who was right in pointing out that I hadn't blogged for over two months. Well, they don't call me absent-minded for nothing! But jokes apart, would it be too far-fetched to assume that I just didn't have the motivation to write about artists that I didn't feel I had a connection with? Also, I must admit, I do tend to get distracted by a million other projects that I plan on finishing. It therefore comes as no surprise that I don't end up finishing most of those projects. Sometimes, it just kills to have a brain that works overtime to give you a thousands schemes a day and not the strength or inclination to see them through to the end.

But then again, my love for music surpasses all these hare-brained ideas and, like a drunk who must eventually return to the comfort of his bed in the morning after a night of revelry, I return to find solace in the "arms" of my headphones. And, like my caustic friend so rightly pointed out, the world hasn't run out of great new artists. I just did not step out of my comfort zone to look around a bit harder to find something I had never heard before. Lots of things happened in the meantime that made me realize that, after all is said and done, there are only certain things that remain permanently with us, while all else fades. For me, music is one such thing.

Fresh New Artist: The Jim O'Ferrell Band a.k.a. I remember
when I first listened to Breaking Benjamin’s album Phobia back in high school; I had it on repeat for more than a
week. I was totally addicted to the sound. The war imagery, in both the lyrics
and the music, was a complete HIT as far as I was concerned. I couldn’t get
enough of that kinda music, and I hadn’t till this morning. Enter The
J.O.B. and that was remedied!

Hailing
from Richmond, Virginia (USA), The Jim O’Ferrell Band was formed
when Jim returned from a stint in Iraq in 2008. Little wonder, then, that The
J.O.B.’s music incorporates heavy war imagery. A case in point being their song
Guardian (from the EP 'Letters'), which talks about life,
peace and war from a soldier’s perspective. Blending acoustic and electric
guitars with drums that make their presence known only occasionally, Guardian hits all the right notes
effortlessly.

Messenger is heavier than Guardian in terms
of the guitars and the percussion. The lyrics aren’t anecdotal; they’re more
like a montage of images – broken, but painting a bigger picture. The distorted
guitars coupled with acoustic riffs and Jim’s ardent vocals infuse true emotion
into the track. Songs like Messenger
prove that you do not need elaborate or poetic lyrics to effectively complement
the music.

The J.O.B.’s
newest single (to be released this July), Feel,
is a more upbeat track filled with optimism and serene thoughts. This one has
more of Americana in it than the other two tracks. But it still sticks to its
Mod-Rock sound while exploring the more ‘folksy’ genre. Jim’s voice reminds me
very much of Three Days Grace’s Adam
Gontier. Overall, Feel is a great
song to include in your Valentine’s mix-tape or ‘Sunny Days Playlist’ without
sounding mushy. That’s a total win-win!!

Verdict: If
you are a Breaking Benjamin fan, listen to this one. You’ll love it. If you’re
NOT a BB fan, listen to this and you’ll still love it! (Although Breaking Benjamin
is more Alt-Metal than Modern Rock, The J.O.B.’s
music comes closest to their Phobia
phase.)

I'm always impressed by the resourcefulness of Indie bands when it comes to making an album cover. Their USP lies in the way they interpret the vibe of their album/EP and depict it through the album art. Here are ten such album covers that I admire. What about you?

Sometimes, eccentricity is all that is
needed to make good music. A desire to do something different, a willingness to
exploit all the available resources and talent can take you places. Don’t
believe me? Take a look at Liv Lapaz. Berlin-based independent artist Liv made
his album Drown, Yeah with just a $50 guitar bought from a trashy Chinese
music store in Beijing, and an iPhone. Apparently, he didn’t even own a laptop
when he started recording the songs in 2011-12. But that hardly has any effect
on the melodies he was able to coax out of “Li-Li” the guitar.

I was a little sceptical about the attempt
at first. I mean, many have failed to create good music even with expensive
studio equipment. So it was natural on my part to feel as I did about Liv’s
ambitious yet down-to-earth venture. But then I listened to the whole album,
song-by-beautiful-song, and it left me appropriately chastised for having
pre-conceived notions about the artist’s recording methods.

Though I must admit, Liv is by no means a
brilliant singer. But that doesn’t mean you can’t expect great songs from him.
I mean, one doesn’t really have to be a Celine Dion or a Whitney Houston to
sing a good tune. If it is simple enough, and if you put enough emotion into
it, you might just end up with an awesome track that can redefine what good
music stands for.

&lt;p&gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;p&amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;a href="http://livlapaz.bandcamp.com/album/drown-yeah"&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;Drown, Yeah by Liv Lapaz&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/a&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/p&amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;&lt;/p&gt;

All the layering, all the arpeggios, add to
the surreal experience that is Drown, Yeah. The songs have a
signature, authentic sound that can only come from a single inspiration on the
artist’s part. The lyrics are, more often than not, a little weird. But they
are the good kind of weird that can totally pass off as being a tad eccentric.
The guitar “Li-Li” is as much an artist on this album as is Liv. She has a
presence, constantly emphasized by the haunting sounds and rhythms that he charms
out of her.

&lt;p&gt;&amp;lt;a href="http://livlapaz.bandcamp.com/track/lady-lemonade"&amp;gt;Lady Lemonade by Liv Lapaz&amp;lt;/a&amp;gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;lt;a href="http://livlapaz.bandcamp.com/track/the-deep"&amp;gt;The Deep by Liv Lapaz&amp;lt;/a&amp;gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;lt;a href="http://livlapaz.bandcamp.com/track/das-kind-und-der-see"&amp;gt;Das Kind und der See by Liv Lapaz&amp;lt;/a&amp;gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Amongst the hauntingly honest tunes on
offer, my personal favourite would be Lady
Lamonade, The Deep and Das Kind und
der See. Although, Melancholia is
worth a listen too. Actually, you should listen to them all and decide for
yourselves. But in my honest opinion, this is one experiment that merits
attention.

I was very curious as to the fate of “Li-Li”
after listening to the songs. So I went over to Liv’s official website and
hunted down this piece of info:

Every Box(of limited edition CDs of
Drown, Yeah) also contains a piece of
"Li-Li", the acoustic guitar and only instrument that was used on the
album. Li-Li was smashed after recording was finished. It was then cut into exactly
100 pieces, one piece for each Limited Edition Box.

I found that
quite sad. It kinda reminds you of the typical heroine from Chinese folklore – a
peasant girl fakes being a princess to save the Emperor’s life. All goes well,
but the heroine dies of a stray arrow from an archers’ tribute. But if you are
big on owning unique memorabilia, I’m sure you would like the concept of owning
a piece of an instrument which was instrumental (pun totally intended) in the
success of the album.

Verdict: An
experiment in eccentricity that proves to be quite successful!

3 1/2 is a LA based indie-pop act led by vocalist Leila Jarman. Their debut EP, First Recordings is a collection of musical confectionery and candy-floss tunes. The songs have a '90s indie feel to them, and the cute cover definitely adds to that feel. Plus, that cat-head-on-band-members cover is just too cute to be ignored. The kitten at their feet is an added bonus. :D

They recently won the Deli LA magazine's best
emerging artist competition. KXLU 88.9 FM Los Angeles and The Smell sent
the band to SXSW, where they played some really great shows.
Formed in 2010, this fledgling ensemble has already recorded two albums, the
latter of which (named You Are All You Have Left To Fear)
released just last week on 29th May, 2012.

The
band includes guitarist Ethan Koozer, once part of the dreamy indie-rock band
Lydia. Though, don’t expect to hear Lydia-influenced music here! Whereas Lydia’s
tunes were reminiscent of chill-wave indie rock sounds, Gates assumes a more aggressive
tone – like that of an angsty teenager denied of his/her dreams. Like
this you mean is a far cry from the vibes given out by guitarist Ethan
Koozer's former musical mates.

Although Gates has been compared to the likes
of Jimmy Eat World and Mineral, there is also a dash of Three Days Grace to
their music. The song The Sound of Letting Go, with its
powerful riffs and emphatic chorus is an excellent example of this.

All
their songs have an angst, which hits you in the form of crashing cymbals,
dreamy leads and aggressive bass lines. The lead vocals are an appropriate
match for the sometimes-hot-sometimes-cold emotion of both the music and lyrics.
Sometimes he lovingly croons into the microphone, sometimes laments his
misfortunes and at other times screams his heart out as the instruments behind
him hit a heartfelt crescendo.

Check
out their limited edition CDs and Vinyl records. Apparently, the artwork and
the overall aesthetic aspects were personally looked after by all members of
the band. That is something you don’t get to see often. Personally, I feel
their artwork pretty much represents what their music stands for. It definitely
is a good idea to snag one of their original limited edition CD or vinyl while
it lasts!

completed a successful tour of the US (or at least half of the US). Both their
albums are up for free download.

So,
my verdict is, they definitely deserve a listen!

The Doors, likewise, are another great offering from about 40 years ago whose music vibes still run strong even today. There aren't many artists today that exude the quaint retro charm that the contemporaries of these powerful icons did. Although no single artist or band can ever equal their musical prowess, there are those that come real close to capturing the zeitgeist of that era. They Know is one such band.

Originally an electro-acoustic duo consisting of Daniel Ehart (lead Guitars, vox) and Lee Raden (Keyboards, vox), They Know have been consistently producing tunes that would instantly appeal to both today's youth as well as children of the flower power decades.

[Pic: Lee Raden (left) and Daniel Ehart (right)]

Lee and Daniel are the resident song-writers of this act; sometimes writing individually, sometimes collaborating and otherwise giving significant inputs to the process. Though not yet a complete album (although work on it is definitely underway), all the songs carry a shared thread of sincerity along with the honest vocals of both Raden and Ehart. Couple that with deeply poetic lyrics, light percussion and melodious acoustic guitars, et voila! You have a unique, soulful sound!

What I love most about They Know is that they do not pretend to be something they are not. You will not find overtly pop references to love, life and all things in-between. Yes, they do write about these things, but in their own personal way. No cliches whatsoever. And personally speaking, Mr. Ehart has found himself a fan in yours truly. After Marko Saaresto, if I've ever liked someone's voice, it would be Daniel Ehart's. It is by no means perfect, having those little flaws. But it's the flaws that make his renditions so brutally honest and earthy.

Their album is expected to be out by late Summer or early Fall 2012. Meanwhile, you may find them on their Facebook page. Don't forget to download Summer '78 and Who Stole Your Heart Away for FREE here!!

Artist Review + Free MP3: Hana Kim

There are some songs that you feel are apt for your life's soundtrack. They may have lyrics that fit your situation, or they may have an upbeat tune that you can imagine playing in the background as you walk down the street on a sunny day. Indie/Soul singer-writer Hana Kim's music falls under such a category.

Imagine your life being one big chick-flick, and then imagine Hana's music playing in the background as you ponder over a Long Distance Call (a Phoenix cover) or consider living in Mexico. Her mellifluous, soulful voice, when accompanied by the piano, as in the song Leave You exudes a Colbie Caillat-like innocence, while the upbeat song Good Feeling has a peppy Lily Allen-like vibe. There is not a single discordant note to be found in this sleekly produced live in-studio album aptly title Studio Sessions.

But Studio Sessions isn't her only album. She released the single Almost Famous not too long ago and played at such venues as The Viper Room, Saint Rocke, Hard Rock Cafe, Room 5 Lounge, and many universities including CSU Los Angeles, UC Santa Barbara, CSU Long Beach, CSU Pomona, and many more. She has also participated in many events such as the Chula Vista Festival, San Diego Asian Film Festival and Asia's Got Talent (with Kaba Modern), KONNECT Panel, and been featured on media internationally (such as Paraguay's National TV Show "El Gigante De La Manana").

Another one of her EP, titled Until You Believe, was released back in 2010. It is evident from her work that she has a consistently appealing sound and continues to deliver impeccably produced music along with her dedicated posse of musicians. Check out her EP here. But I'm back now and the first thing I'm gonna do is tell you about a great new artist!

Harry is a singer-songwriter from London (UK), with a sweet voice and a much mature outlook towards life than could be expected from kids his age. At just sixteen, Harry has succeeded in creating a medley of beautiful tunes that touch your heart, whatever your age may be. His music portrays the innocence of youth with an uncanny peek at the mature soul inside. He has an easygoing, earnest manner of singing that is soothing to the ears.

'This Is War' is a song that has an Enya-esque quality to it. Harry sings of war with such a calm demeanor that completely contradicts the nature of the idea that the lyrics convey. Most
teen artists talk of being who you are, of being free and wild. Harry talks of
being cautious, keeping your head down and being inside a shell. Of a life
where enemies hide behind every corner and lurk in every shadow.
This Is War has the music that can lull you into
believing he isn't warning you of a vicious war at all! Instead, it feels as
if he is telling you of a faraway time when some faceless strangers fought
their wars and left memories of the bloodshed; to be recounted by loving
mothers to their little ones while they are being tucked into warm beds. Nowhere
is the music harsh or exactly “war-like”. It kinda reminds one of The Call by Regina Spektor. The
ribbons of string instruments in the background build up to an excellent,
classical-inspired climax. This could be a perfect song to be considered for the next Hunger Games movie soundtrack.

Harry's second song, ‘Bicycle
that can fly’ shows the vulnerability of a lost child as analyzed by an
adult mind. The song was apparently written when he was just ten years old. I wouldn't venture as far as to say that he had a
really deep meaning in his mind when he wrote it originally. But maybe now, for
people who listen to it at a much older age, it definitely has some philosophical
connotations. The
music is simple and elegant and accentuates his voice instead of drowning it out in a melee of
instruments. The
ribbons of cello in the background give the song a poignant quality. The minimal
use of acoustic guitar evokes the feeling of a sunny day and fluffy clouds. The video is a dash of eccentric
genius! Definitely something to make a note of.

I like how the strongest element
in both songs is Harry’s voice, which is untouched by any kind of fancy
filters or effects. His ability to emote the lyrics that he is singing is what makes the songs have the impact that they do. I guess some people are just born with oodles of talent, eh? Anywho, here is a sample of some of Harry's other songs. And you'll have to admit, these are just as great as the two I just reviewed. Enjoy these until I return next time with another interesting post. :)

Verdict: Harry is definitely an artist to watch out for. He just might be the next big thing!

Do not worry, I haven't vanished, nor have I forgotten that I have a blog. But due to some evil people who take pleasure in torturing us poor souls by conducting life-threatening events called Examinations, I will be unable to post until the 16th of April. If I get out of my ordeal (largely) unharmed, I promise to treat all of you to a sumptuous feast comprising of awesomely cooked book reviews and perfectly garnished music tid-bits. Until then, pray for my safe passage and well-being. Also, throw in some good luck wishes if you can.

IMHO, Big Mouth was kind of a "dead fish" track. It seems too derived, the beats are nothing new. In comparison, Disparate Youth is a tune worth having on your playlist. The synth piano intro is a great build-up to the song. (Reminds of Drake anyone?) The guitar riffs are simply too good! Compare the two for yourself here.

It features the hit single We Are Young featuring Janelle Monae, which was also featured on Glee. The band was influenced by Kanye West and hip-hop, influences of which are pretty apparent, but not altogether overwhelming in many of the tracks on this album.

What do you do when you go through a break-up? I think I would curl up with my music player for half a day and listen to all the songs that give me comfort. Then maybe go bird-watching with a few girlfriends. ;) Here's my break-up playlist. Enjoy (or don't, as you wish). :)
Bedroom's debut EP Toys has finally released! Here is a little candid chat with the man behind the music - Noah Kittinger. A limited releasing of tapes of his EP will be out
on a label called Furious Hooves.

AMS: How did being a "bedroom musician" come about?

Bedroom: I've always made music and have had
recording gear and stuff. I just make music in my room away from everything. I
like that way you know? It's like just me and creativity or whatever haha. It's
great.

AMS: What was it like to produce your own EP? Any difficulties?

B: Not really no. Actually none at all. I
recorded this first song which was "Opening/Intro" and I really liked
the sound and vibe of it. So honestly the whole dream-pop/chillwave thing just
recently came about and I'm sticking with it. It all happened pretty fast. The
sound, buzz about the EP, the beginning of a future for me I guess.

AMS: Why name your first EP "Toys"? Any specific reason?

B: My buddy Chance made up some cool
photos for me that had toys in them, and he like put Bedroom all over them. So
I told him the name should be toys haha. not really a deep, poetic explanation
but it sounds cool!

AMS: Do you have a particular
musician or song that inspires you to make your own music?

B: Oh yeah for sure. I could go on and on
but I think the song writing structure of my songs is really inspired by Youth
Lagoon. I listened to his album "The Year Of Hibernation" and loved
how it wasn't a verse, chorus, verse type structure. Before the EP, I always tried
making my songs like perfect with the usual structure and had a really hard
time with it. It took the fun out of making music for me. So recently, it all
just kind of happened. My sound I would say is really inspired my artists like
Wild Nothing, Beach Fossils, and even some hip-hop honestly. I've always liked
the idea of keeping the drums electronic and distant sounding.

You can buy the EP here for just $1.50! What I wouldn't give for a day in the past, when I was a kid and gamboled in the neighborhood for five hours every day. The days when making forts was fun, but defending them was even more so. We would gang up and play pranks on the "grown-ups", trade trinkets and gum for a chance to play on that one kid's Gameboy and plan "expeditions" to the "far corners of the town" (which was usually within a one kilometer radius) on our bicycles. But not one of those smart-arse physicists have invented a time machine (yet). So I'll settle for the next best thing - Indie Ambient Sci-Fi Pop.

HakanStone is an indie pop project by Jens Hills with vocal contributions from KSharp, VHF, AHF and AJ Stubbs. With a signature Brit eccentricity, this act from East London (UK) personifies all that is "trippy". A quirky mix of pop beats from the flower power era and electro-pop from the wacky '80s makes up for majority of their mojo. I could totally envision this kinda music being played at a fashion event or as the soundtrack for a romantic scene in Gossip Girl.

The consistent feature in all the tracks is the very catchy beat. The style relies heavily on sweet vocals (whether male or female) that give the music an effervescent quality. Dance With Me has the potential to be the next "Young Folks". There is an unmistakable PB&J vibe in there somewhere, but HakanStone still remains original. The lyrics are mostly upbeat and peppy, like the music itself. The overall effect is that of minimal, clean, elegant music that exudes freshness.

Here is a track that is NOT on the album, but is really good nonetheless. That belongs in a freakin' club!!

Now a little about the collaborators, straight from the horse's mouth!

Contributors

Most of the time Jens works as an intellectual property and
commercial business affairs consultant.

When not singing K Sharp mostly works in corporate
responsibility - yep, corporate responsibility!

Jens and K were at university together.

Anthony Jackson-Stubbs does his thing with Paleday from his
base in Brighton.

VHF is working through college and planning to be an artist,
whilst looking to do some sessions and acoustic appearances.

AHF is going to tour South America, maybe with her sax,
before studying Spanish and Portuguese at university.

VHF and AHF are Jens' daughters. It's a family affair.

Simon Rogers makes or produces music full time, including
for film and tv.

The Album Story

Jens trained as a classical guitarist, gave up. Went to
university, played in a band (yes K Sharp was the lead singer!), got offered a
record deal. Didn't do it, became a lawyer. Simon Rogers went to the Royal
College of Music and won the guitar prize. Became a successful artist and
producer.

Simon was Jens' client.

Jens did lots of interesting work, including a number of
copyright infringement cases, kept a project studio for this work and for fun.
Discovered Garageband in 2008, worked up some tracks. Simon liked them and came
on board. Daughters did their bits...

So now you know! Most of the guitar work and other instrumentation on the
album is Jens with production touches by Simon. The drums are a mixed of
samples, loops and fills, mostly sourced from www.drumsondemand.com, some from
midi-guitar work. Idea was to create a virtual band...

Jens writes the lyrics himself, except for the lyrics on Late
Call, Impressions, Dance With Me, States of Mind, Chains and Control, which he co-wrote with K Sharp. About the future of HakanStone, Jens says, "I am lucky in that I have been able to do something to a result that reflects what I wanted to achieve creatively because of the friends I made in the music industry. Most importantly I have gained a lot of experience about the realities of trying to exploit music in the current climate. I hope to take this into a model for an Internet music streaming service which is an alternative market to the majors and which actually makes money for the musical contributors as opposed to the owners of the service. On the music side, I have a remix album planned (about 10-12 remixes), about 4 videos and a further album which will go into production later in the year. Big issue is whether we go live. It is essentially a studio project, although people think it is a band and we have received several enquiries from promoters."

My personal favorites from this 19-song double album are Spilt Milk (feat. VHF), Save My Soul (feat. A. J. Stubbs) and States of Mind (feat. KSharp). Another track to take note of is Gaston (feat. VHF).

You can listen to the whole album here or buy it from CDBaby.com. Trust me, it's TOTALLY worth the money spent! Follow HakanStone on Twitter and Facebook.

Verdict: Impeccable production and AWESOME music!

No, it isn't about some sordid affair or scandalous evening; rather, it is about my blogging ethics and motives. Why did I start blogging? Because I had an opinion; because I wanted to tell people about the books I read, the music I discover, the authors and artists I love (or don't love). Because I thought if I could suggest a song or two of my favorite indie band to ten of my friends, I can very well help that band reach a hundred more people if I blog about their music. Wouldn't you like to know about a good book that hasn't really made it big yet? If you visit my blog and read my posts, of course you want to know! But what do I get out of talking about stuff that isn't really big in the outside world? Well, how's "joy and happiness" for an answer? Not everything that people do is for material gains. Sometimes, they just do things because they find it fulfilling and satisfying to do them.

So, if I say "I love promoting upcoming and indie artists", it doesn't mean I do so for money! Heck, it'd be atrocious for anyone to even suggest that! I promote them because I think they do an excellent job and that their sound needs that extra bit of exposure. So what if they aren't "the big thing" yet? They have the goods to make it big, and I'll be damned if I don't help them on their quest for making good music. Being a fan, I do my bit by making sure other people know how great the artist is. I do not accept remuneration for writing a review. My reviews aren't sponsored, and they cannot be "bought". I accept review requests from new/indie artists and reserve the right to write an honest review if and only if I find their music to be up to my standard. Also, I may review live shows if I'm able to travel to the venue. I try not to post a bad review that may deter future listeners (when it comes to a struggling artist). If I don't like the sound or find that the genre isn't my forte, I don't review the artist at all. All I ask in return is for others to respect my sensibilities and not have a wrong impression.

Or, if I write about a book that I read and liked (or disliked), I write an honest to God review that expresses my feelings towards that piece of literature. I try not to pick crappy books lately, or genres that I have outgrown. But if I have high expectations from a book and it turns out to be not so fantastic, I'll let my displeasure be known; I won't get personal about it. I don't call a spade by any other name. If someone requests a review, I expect to be provided a copy of the work. That is fair enough, I think. And just because I receive a free copy doesn't guarantee a "five-star review". Puh-lease! You know me better than that by now.

So summing up all that I said in my rant above:

1. I do what I do because it makes me happy.

2. Reviews on this blog can be requested, but NOT BOUGHT.

3. It is only fair that you send me a copy of the material to be reviewed, and not expect me to buy it.

Absie Recommends # 2: V-Day Couples Mix-Tape

Happy Valentines day to all you lovebirds out there! I'm sure all of you've had your share of chocolates and flowers and teddies delivered to you early in the morning. Some of you might even serenade under your Love's balcony with portable iPod speakers. And then there'll be some who just can't find the right gift for your special someone. Well, let me help you out there. Here is a mix-tape of fourteen of the most romantic songs in my playlist. I'll make sure to avoid cliched classic numbers in this one. Why don't you last-minute gift-seekers just burn a CD of these sweet melodies?

Stjepan Hauser)

I'm now officially listening to Croatian songs. Ha! Who would've even imagined that I would start listening to East European music? But stranger things have happened in this world. So yeah, you there giving me the "weirdo" look, get over it!

As you can easily guess, it all started with my 2Cellos obsession. I would go on YouTube and watch whatever videos I could find featuring either of those two talented cellists. That's when I stumbled upon a series of videos featuring the very famous (in Croatia) pop singer Oliver Dragojevic and the now famous Stjepan Hauser. There was this very quiet little song; the video featuring Dragojevic on the piano and vocals, Hauser on his cello and a very endearing young woman as Hauser's love-interest/human equivalent of his beloved cello. It is a very artistic, an aesthetically pleasing video that just touches you somewhere in the general region of your aortic valve and brings a lump in your throat. I did not understand one single word of the lyrics (which I am guessing are pretty deep and just as beautiful as the video). The song starts with Hauser playing a moving melody on the cello, which is then picked up by Dragojevic on the piano and vocals. His mellow voice is like a soothing balm to your ears as he belts out the refrain: Sve ce zvijezde s tobom leci/ pune tajnih putovamja/ prije sna ti moram reci/ "Budi dobra, lijepo sanjaj." Coupled with the ribbons of cello playing in the background, the melody will bring tears to any music-lover's eyes.

As I said, I did not get the lyrics at all; and Google translate does not help one bit. But the video conveyed a few things that I think go well with the overall mood of the song. It is as if Hauser is the younger version of Dragojevic, who is reminiscing about his long-lost love - a beautiful girl he just can't forget. Her memory still remains as fresh in his mind as if it were just yesterday that the two were together. He remembers each detail; every ray of the sun that shone in her hair, every gesture she made... He remembers her as if she were a melody he used to play - still plays; a melody so close to his heart, it is almost heartbreaking to hear him play it. Every night when he sees the stars, he imagines her lying among them. If only he could sleep, could dream of her, he would gladly do so. But he can't; and so he bids her - his beautiful dream- to stay as she is in his memory; untouched by the elements, untouched by time...

This is what I think the song means. But if someone could be so helpful as to ive me the actual meaning of the lyrics, I would be forever grateful to them. Like, for eternity! I swear!!

Verdict: If a song can touch you so deeply without your even knowing the lyrics, it has to be some serious shit!

They came. They saw. They fucking destroyed the music scene! The first time I saw 2Cellos performing their famous cover of the Michael Jackson song Smooth Criminal on The Ellen Show, I was blown away by how effortlessly they manipulated that four stringed instrument to sound like a whole band! They were the percussion, the rhythm guitar, the lead guitar all rolled into one single instrument. I never thought a cello could round so rocking. I'd obviously heard of cello-rock before, but it didn't appeal to me until now.

Stjepan Hauser and Luka Sulic are two cellists from Croatia. They became an instant phenomenon last year when they uploaded their version of Smooth Criminal on Youtube. Within no time, they had a million views and a record contract in their cello cases!

Let me describe what 2Cellos really is. It is a treat to watch them perform as much as it is a bliss to hear them play. They get so engrossed in playing that instrument to perfection that nothing in the world seems to exist for them. It is just them and their two cellos and the omnipresent notes of the song that they are playing. The intensity with which they play is evident from the way their bows seem to be shred to ribbons by the end of the song. They must need a new bow after every performance, methinks! And the ecstatic expressions on their faces seem to crescendo with the music itself. If you could headbang on a cello, you'd do it like Stjepan and Luka.

They recently featured in the Glee episode (aired on 31 Jan 2012) where Naya Rivera and Grant Gustin sang to their accompaniment of Smooth Criminal. Glee and 2Cellos - does it get better than that? Heck to the no! They really redefined that song.

Bonus Time:
Their rendition of Welcome to the Jungle has a class of its own. How can anyone make that big old, upside-down violin (no mockery intended) sound like an electric guitar, a bass and a drum set all at the same time? Hats off man! Another song to watch out for is their cover of Highway to Hell by AC/DC. With only a drummer to accompany them, they effing ROCK the already rocking classic rock song!

The Fray, whose last self-titled album was released in 2009, have released the first single off of their third studio album titled Scars and Stories.

Heartbeat is a little different from what I identify as 'The Fray style'. It is a little on 'The Script' side. The Fray have this way of making the electric guitar behave like an acoustic one. The end result is a beautiful riff that can sound just as surreal on a piano. They do just that in Heartbeat.
I love it when Slade hits the falsetto notes! Some singers sound real bad in that pitch, but he makes it work 'real horrorshow'. The chorus is very catchy, you'll find yourself humming along to it very often. I especially like the lines, "If you can love somebody, love them all the same/You gotta love somebody, love them all the same".
But I have one major complaint. What's with the generic, cliched lyrics? I mean, what happened to stuff like 'Over My Head (Cable Car)'? Those were some good lyrics. Good lyrics should present the intended imagery with different ideas, newer comparisons; they should convey their meaning while still keeping you thinking whether that's what the songwriter meant by those words. I didn't see that in this song. It was all so 'been there, done that' boring. I could remember a thousand movies with the exact same scenario - rain, lovers running away on a truck, emotions running high, yada yada. What's new?

Verdict: A good song. Don't miss it if you are a fan of The Fray. For all others, there's plenty out there if you want choices.
