The needle position not aligning could be because your machine needs a good clean and oiling. I’m not sure if your model have a button hole function. Make sure it is not engaged. Sometimes the shaft where the reverse unit turns in get sticky and does not return with your button hole dial. You will have to oil and warm it up with a hair dryer or use a special release oil. You will get access to it by removing the side cover. It can take a while to work in the fresh oil.

Brother XL-2220 tension problem. I bought the machine second hand, and was warned of potential tension issues, however when I used the machine it ran fine. After a little light sewing (three cotton baby bibs), it suddenly stopped working. By this I mean, the top stich wuold come through fine, but the bottom would just be miles and miles of tangled thread. Under instruction from a seamstress friend I have tried changing the needle, adjusting the tension, and buying a higher quality thread, but unfortunately the problem persists. Do you think this is servicing or repair?

Seems like a normal repair but you can try the following:

Tension Problem

Your top tension is too low and should be on 5.

Make sure you have some tension on the bobbin case.

Make sure no cotton is stuck in-between your top tension plates. (Use a needle to hook it out)

Make sure no cotton is stuck in-between your bobbin case tension plates. (Use a needle to hook it out)

Your bobbin case could be damaged.(Sometimes you can remove the hooks on it)

Double check your threading.

Upper tension assembly

Upper tension assembly for some Globe and Kenmore sewing machines are the same. The barrel width is (18mm/11/16″) and a spring that pulls up. The barrel width must be the same to fit into tension unit hole. When you open the light cover you can see the screw holding the upper tension assembly. The upper tension assembly should just pull out when the screw is loosened. Just take not of the tension release pin not to loose it.

Make sure not to push the upper tension assembly to deep so that the tension release pin push the tension plates open. You’ll have zero tension then. If it does not go deep enough your tension release won’t function. The presser bar lever can’t push the tension release pin

Check both carbon brushes by removing the brush cap. The carbon brushes should be at least 50% the size of new ones. It is recommended that both the carbon brush and spring be replaced. After installing new carbon brushes dress the commutator to seat the brushes.

The Husqvarna Viking sewing machine motor noise is affected by the load and the belt tension. If the motor deviates from normal check the tension of the cog belt. When replacing carbon brushes it is important to note the model of the machine. Starting with 6460 the carbon brush holder (16) was redesigned. Once the carbon has worn the holder will not allow the carbon brush spring (13) to ride the commutator. When ordering carbon brushes it is best to use the 40 16295-01 from 6460 and later models. For earlier models use the carbon brush 41 14 934-01 which will repel from the commutator automatically when the carbon is worn.

Repairing a faulty Elna air electronic foot control:

I’ve set out the following faults that can be checked before buying a new foot control. The easiest way of finding these faults are to dip it in water, close off the foot control head and apply pressure on the air control membrane to see where the air bubbles escape. This should give you a good indication where the foot control is leaking air.

Foot control hose 988667-003: The Elna foot control Hose 988667-003 can get a hole or cut. You can always cut out the damaged part of the hose and providing it is still long enough use the narrow plastic ink tube of a empty ballpoint pen to join it.

Membrane holding plate: Membrane holding plate gets cracked from age or when the four holding screws are tightened to hard. You will get a leek between the membrane and the holding plate

The spring scale N° 101’670 is calibrated at the factory and should not be modified.

Referring to the first picture in the picture gallery below on how to set the tension on the lower bobbin case:

1. Insert a full bobbin of embroidery thread N° 30-2 ply (60-2) and thread the tension as per drawing. Set the take-up lever in its highest position.

2. Set gratuated wheel “C” on “1″, loosen screw “a” and adjust eccentric “b” to obtain a residual tension between 45 and 55 g by pulling the spring scale 1011670 slowly in the illustrated direction.

3. Tighten screw “a” whilst retaining “b” in its position.

4. Turn graduated wheel “c” several times between “0″ and “2″ and recheck adjustment .

The globe sewing machines and overlockers use mostly the same plug except for some of the electronic models. This three hole plug were also used by various other sewing machine and overlocker brands like Husqvarna, Janome, Pfaff, Singer, Jaquar, Toyota, Frister & Rossmann, White and more. I’ve listed some of the models that should also fit the Globe foot controls below.

Remedy

Many users think the machine has broken down when they first experience a “cotton jam”. This is easily corrected. Turn to the section of your instruction manual which tells you how to remove and clean the shuttle and race. Follow directions carefully and when you have removed the shuttle. Thoroughly clean the race (into which shuttle fits), the race cover and the shuttle itself. Be careful not to score or damage the shuttle or race these are precision-ground parts. Before re-assembling put one spot of oil on your finger-tip and rub this around the outer edge of the shuttle. Do not over oil. Now refit shuttle and race cover as described in your instruction book

Elna lotus hook drive gear | 408101

We have an Elna Lotus about 35 years old. It’s black Hook Drive Gear has broken and needs replacement. I can not take the old one out. Do I need any special tool to take the old one out? It appears that the old black hook drive has been replaced by white hook drive. Am I correct?

Husqvarna Viking Zig Zag timing

I have replaced the cam and now when I try and do a zig zag pattern the timing is out and the needle starts to zig or zag whilst it is still performing a stitch.

I’ve added two images explaining how to set the Husqvarna Viking zig zag timing, the worm wheel tolerance and a extra diagram for the principle of zigzag synchronisation. This should guide you through the process, else you can always ask a question on the comments box at the bottom of the page.

The general rule for setting the zig zag timing on any sewing machine is as follow, but also apply to setting the Husqvarna Viking zig zag timing:

Set stitch width control at maximum width position. Turn the handwheel, observing that the needle goes straight up with now side movement to a point 2-3 mm above the needle plate. At this point the needle should begin to swing over to the other side. Verify that the needle goes straight down the other side.

If adjustment is necessary, loosen screws on worm gear and turn slightly in either direction.

Sometimes the worm gear can get sticky and won’t move freely. You can warm the worm gear with a hair dryer to loosen the old oil. Applying excessive heat can damage plastic parts of your machine

Bernina smoking and running by itself or causing a dead short

The interference capacitors go faulty because of age and quality. It is common with the older Bernina machines lioke the Bernina Favourite 830, Minimatic, Sport, 807, 800, 808 etc. and even newer models: 1120, 1000, etc. This is not isolated to Bernina and can happen to the Husqvarna, Pfaff, Singer Machines.
On the older machines it should be an straight forward repair, but on the newer models the capacitors are inter graded into the power supplies.

The interference capacitor has gone faulty on your motor or in your foot control(Depending on the type). The machine will work fine without it but it won't meet IEC International Standards to help prevent interference between systems. (Static on your radio, TV etc.). If you are not sure check with a qualified electrical worker. Your can find more information at the following links:

A new one should be about $100NZD or you can make one up. I'll also add a link to a post on the wiring diagram that you can get directly from the electric component. Remember to comply to electrical and safety regulations.

Setting the hook timing

If you timing is not set correctly or very fine it will/could cause skipped stitches on stretch material.(On the zig zag stitch it will normally skip on the right stitch) When the needle is on its far most left the hook point should just pass above the needle hole. The hook point should almost touch the needle when it passes above the needle hole. It is easier to check with the needle threaded. This is a good way to check if you don't have the gauge.
