Oli Hecks and Dhani Harrison, the founding members of thenewno2, have cultivated their music using a strictly Do-It-Yourself style.
Despite his lineage, the “Do-It-Yourself” approach to succeeding in the music industry has been the conscious choice of Dhani Harrison, vocalist and lead guitarist of electro-rock band thenewno2. thenewno2 (pronounced “The New Number Two”), whose name is a reference to the 1960s British television show, “The Prisoner,” released their first full-length album, “You Are Here,” in August of 2008 after 2006’s EP001. Currently, the band is preparing for a tour that will stop at Terminal 5 on Nov. 8.

Since the release of “You Are Here,” the band has performed on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien,” had two songs featured on Rock Band 2 and been lauded in numerous music magazines.

We were raving about Thenewno2 back in January -- don't you love when people do that? Qualify their amount of into-a-band-ness by the length of time they've known about them? Great, because that's exactly what I'm doing right now -- and at first their mellow, lo-fi sound was part of the appeal.
Now, check out duo Dhani Harrison (yes, yes, the late George's son) and Oli Hecks' brand-new Adria Petty-directed video, "Yomp," off their new album, You Are Here. It hits a bit harder and more psychedelic and taps a White Stripes/ Queens Of The Stone Age vein while playing a moody and dark game of Dia de los Muertos dress-up.

Psychedelic art rockers thenewno2 will be the focus of the Museum's third Emerging Artists showcase, taking place in the 200-seat GRAMMY Sound Stage. Featuring guitarist/synth/vocalist Dhani Harrison and drums/synth Oli Hecks, the band describes their music as "an eerie terrain of digital beats, heavy guitars with an arsenal of studio confectionary." Recently featured in Rolling Stone, LA Weekly, and one of the final guests on the Late Show with Conan O'Brien, Harrison and Hecks will join Executive Director Robert Santelli for an insightful discussion about the group's debut album, You Are Here, and their experiences in music, design and film. An intimate performance will close the evening.

All proceeds benefit The GRAMMY Museum. American Express presale begins via Ticketmaster.com on June 18, 2009. Dhani Harrison…yes, you may know him as George’s son…has been making the press rounds, talking up You Are Here, the album by his band, thenewno2. While doing so, however, it hasn’t exactly required a great deal of arm-twisting to get him to chat about how he had more than a little bit to do with the folks at Apple Corps agreeing to license the Beatles’ music for their very own volume of “Rock Band.” But that’s fair enough, since “Yomp,” a song by thenewno2, was released as downloadable content for “Rock Band” on July 29, 2008, and another track, “Crazy Tuesday,” was released as one of 20 free songs for “Rock Band 2.”

“I basically did that for Apple,” admitted Harrison, “so that they could see it and say, ‘Oh, look, there’s Dhani, he’s a new media kind of person, and this is how he’s selling his stuff. Maybe we should consider doing that with the Beatles, seeing as we don’t have any digital deal or anything.’”

The Beatles’ “Rock Band” evolved out of several meetings Harrison had with Alex Rigopulos, co-founder of Harmonix Music Systems, the developers of “Rock Band.”

“He’s a genius,” said Harrison, “just the loveliest, loveliest guy. We were sitting around one day, and he just said to me, ‘Do you think they would ever go for a Beatle game?’ And I was thinking the same thing to talk to him about! ‘It would be amazing, wouldn’t it?’ I said to him. Actually, I think I said, ‘It would be amazing because I could kick your ass at ‘I Am the Walrus’ while dressed as a wizard in Shea Stadium.’

“Do you know what I mean? Or I could put on the ice skating outfit from ‘Help!’ and then beat you at ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ in the universe somewhere. I don’t know. Just make up whatever you can; ‘I Am the Walrus’ at the Cavern Club, even. Wouldn’t that be fun? And we both just started riffing on that kind of stuff until we both just were in hysterics, and it was obviously a brilliant idea, but I said, ‘Well, that’s never going to happen, is it?’ And he said, ‘No, it’s never going to happen.’ I said, ‘But I should talk to the guys from Apple, anyway. Because it is actually a no-brainer. It is the biggest no-brainer that I’ve ever, ever thought about, and if Apple don’t go for it, then they are shooting themselves in the foot, because someone else is going to do it. Someone else is going to get their own game.

“In the way the media works these days, in the way that music delivery systems work these days, I find it quite often best to be first,” Harrison explained. “If you were the first person ever to design an application for the iPhone and you patented it, you would be very, very better off than we are right now, you know? But you’ve got to be the first one to do it. So I figured that Led Zeppelin or The Stones were going to do it unless we just got on to it. So I got cracking with the guys from Apple. I kind of almost bullied them into believing how amazing it was. They really didn’t need much convincing if you looked to the fourth quarter, the month of December 2007, I think they sold something like 10,000,000 units of ‘Guitar Hero 2′ in just one month, and they are $50.00 each. I said, ‘If you do the math, if you go 50/50 with ‘Rock Band’ and you sell a Beatles ‘Rock Band’ game, that’s a big deal’ you know. And not to mention that, once the game is made, you can just keep adding songs to it. You could do the Bangladesh pack, you could do the ‘Live and Let Die’ pack, you could do the ‘Imagine’ pack…”

Are you salivating yet? Better clean yourself up. You’ve got ’til September 9th until the Beatles’ “Rock Band” hits stores.

Dhani Harrison Talks New Band, Beatles Video Game

Dhani Harrison could have started releasing records well before he was 30, but the small matter of being a Beatle's son made him cautious about the musical career path. Now, with the upcoming debut release from his band thenewno2, he's embraced the inevitable.
"I did everything I could to not be a musician," Harrison tells Billboard.com. "I went to university (Brown), I worked as a designer, I competed in Olympic sport (rowing)...and I ended up being a musician. It's in the DNA, I guess."
That said, Harrison -- who's recorded with his father's band Traveling Wilburys and on his last album, "Brainwashed" as well as collaborating with Jakob Dylan, Rooney and Wu-Tang Clan -- also brought some lessons he gleaned from his father as he and creative partner Oli Hicks started working as the thenewno2, whose "You Are Here" comes out March 31 after several different "soft release" incarnations online.
"I think I learned a lot about not buying into a lot of hype," Harrison says. "I wanted to be a kind of faceless entity; I didn't want to be Dhani Harrison and the Muppets or something like that. I don't ever use my name for anything in terms of getting the music heard. My dad was always, like, 'Be a musician but don't be famous (because) you lose all your freedom'. He did a really great job of keeping me out of the press all my life, but I feel like I'm ready do to do what I want to do, and this is it."
Harrison is also looking forward to another release this year -- "The Beatles: Rock Band" interactive game that's due out Sept. 9 and marks the Fab Four's first entry into the digital music distribution realm. He's been intimately involved in the project and promises it will feature "stuff that has never been heard, never been released," though he's not at liberty to reveal specifics.

"I took the project to Apple and sort of convinced everybody to have a presentation," says Harrison, who was used as a model for some of the game's characters. "My job description is...being enthusiastic. We've been working on it for the past two years. This is the first one that is going to be totally, historically accurate. It's been a real headache, but it's been the most enjoyable work I've done in my life."
