What is Abstract Art?

 Abstract art deals primarily with ideas in its subject matter. In its form, it is usually removed from realism, and does not try to represent the physical world in a common sense way. Many people find abstract art inaccessible because it often has no recognizable forms in it. Abstract art is characterized by a reduction to the elements of art; for example, color, line, shape and form.  Abstract artists make use of these elements often in a very simplified way.

Cubists, like Picasso, seemed to want to point out that the visual experience of something was never a simple, one-angled shot, but is made up of our ability to move in space, and have 3-dimensional vision as a result of the positioning of our eyes.  Mondrian reduced his paintings to the three primary colors (red, blue and yellow) and black, white and greys. His subject matter? Well, he was trying to find a universal set of visual terms that could be recognized and interpreted by all people, regardless of their cultural background.

Abstract Wall Art Décor on a Budget

I’m a great collector of paintings, favouring those done by my very talented family members, but occasionally I’ll find a print that I like, or take the bold step of shopping at an art auction. Of the two, in my opinion, framing and block-mounting prints are by far the less expensive option.

I have some old favorites posters I’ve collected over the years which get updated with new frames from time-to-time, but I also enjoy visiting galleries and art shops to browse posters of new artists and exhibitions. Use your gorgeous fabric to recover old pin-boards or cork-boards. This creates a good-looking pin-board area that naturally curbs the impulse to stick study notes directly onto the wall. Art Prints vs. Original Paintings

Sometimes people think they are getting an original painting and they end up getting a print. To avoid confusion, it is becoming important to know how to distinguish a print from an original painting.

Art Prints are multiples of the same piece, created through a printmaking technique. One of the most common types of prints is the one produced by a photo-mechanical process. The image is photographically transferred from an original source and is mass reproduced. Do not confuse this with original prints.

Original Prints are artwork from a matrix, which is generally a single metal plate; stone block, wooden block or screen that is hand-made by the artist. Each impression is done by the artist or artisan and the matrix is later destroyed. The prints are traditionally signed and numbered in pencil by the artist and generally called “Limited Edition Prints”. The numbering is done in this format: 149/300. Abstract Art and Abstract Artists: A Starting Point

Abstract art itself is commonly defined as being a medium that utilises a “visual language of form, colour, and line to create a composition” or something that may or may not “exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world” (Rudolph Arnheim – Visual Thinking). One might posit that in layman’s terms, that roughly translates to something along the lines of: “the abstract artist communicates via the medium of drawing, existential messages that one cannot usually see”. Or, even simpler: the abstract artist pours interesting parts of themselves into their work, the meaning behind which can take on a variety of truths – after all, it is abstract.

Abstract can often involve being thrown in at the proverbial deep end, particularly when one has little experience of the subject matter first-hand.
