Stirring thoughts of a wild and unspoiled land full of wildlife and wide-open vistas, a camping safari in Africa is one of the most fantasized trips for nature lovers. Millions of people decide to backpack each year with the vast amount of them heading to Asia but few ever consider Africa because, well, it’s Africa. With everything you hear and see on the media why would you want to go?

Why wouldn’t you is the more appropriate question. It kicks Asia’s butt in almost every aspect because of one key ingredient: raw, natural variety.

Sure, Asia’s gorgeous but you’ll see rice terraces in almost every country, more traffic than you know how to dodge and so many backpackers you’ll feel like you never left home. In Africa you’ll see everything from tea plantations for as far as the eye can see to nothing but dirt. You won’t see another vehicle for 300km and will only see other backpackers when you hit the campsites and lodges. It’s completely different in almost every aspect.

No one country is like another; you can literally experience everything you have ever wanted just by crossing a border. If you love a good city, Cape Town is a fantastic mix of coastal beaches and city life but if you want nothing but peace, quiet and sand dunes, hop over the border into Namibia to spend your evenings spellbound by the sunsets. Even Zanzibar, a small island, changes within just a short drive; Stone Town is alive with bustling alleys, whilst in the North you have white sand, blue sky and turquoise waters. Africa really is a continent that has it all.

In Asia, the only time you are likely to get to see elephants up close are at either superficial tourist attractions or elephant sanctuaries (and even then you can’t guarantee that they are treated well). In Africa? They’re your traffic jams. You can see entire herds of them as you drive past; it’s nature at its most raw. As you fall asleep at night, there is no noisy traffic, loud backpackers or music blaring from a club - in fact, you'll only hear the creatures calling to each other. Words fail to describe the beauty you see and feel when watching a giraffe or seeing a rhino help its young to the water for a drink. True nature like this speaks an unrecognisable language only your heart can understand.

With its raw simplicity, Africa is medicine for the soul. It allows you to quietly unpack your baggage and put it all back in together neatly in your own time. ‘Hakuna Matata’, is a great way to define not just Kenya but every country I travelled to, as there are ‘no worries’ among the people and animals you meet. It’s just you, nature and whatever you desire to feel.

Africa is also one of the most adrenaline-fuelled continents in the world. South Africa has bungee jumping, Namibia’s Swakopmund is famous for skydiving and Livingstone in Zambia is known as the ‘adventure capital,’ and that’s just to name a few. In Zambia alone you can do everything from Grade V white water river rafting to jumping into the Devil’s Pool at the very edge of Victoria Falls.

Your African experience is entirely up to you. You can be involved with local culture and people, and visit as many national parks and reserves as you wish. Contrary to what you might think, you don’t have to travel that far to experience a little bit of everything; making it a continent that suits everyone’s needs and dreams.

The time to go is now before everyone realises the true beauty and wonder of Africa and it becomes as predictable and touristy as Asia currently is.

And, the only question left to ask is: why haven’t you gone yet?"

First Friday Wild Post - Tempting Tanzania by Ivana Butler

Going on an African safari is one of the greatest adventures of a lifetime, in fact, there is no other place on earth like Africa. A game drive heightens all your senses and makes you feel as though you’re truly alive, but with a continent so vast you need to put in some planning.

First, choose a location based on the activities that appeal to you, for example, adrenaline pursuits, cultural visits and of course wildlife viewing. Second find out the health requirements prior to flying out - based on the part of Africa you’re visiting. Third, be sure to purchase the right travel insurance so you can enjoy your vacation without worry.

The Serengeti is a land of scenic beauty, filled with untamed wildlife, and when you’re out on the endless plains, you can literally see for miles. A major highlight is the annual migration, which occurs between December and September, and while the dates can vary, this is one of the biggest draws in East Africa.

2012 is here and we're back with the first, First Friday Wild Post of the year! Jess Spate is a keen photographer who has been diving for over a decade, so who better to ask about delving into the depths of Zanzibar and beyond!

A few days spent exploring the underwater environment can make a great addition to almost any coastal holiday. You don't have to be a licenced scuba diver with all your own equipment. If you can swim, you can snorkel, and these days almost every seaside resort town has its own dive and snorkel gear hire shop. Here are ten tips to help you make the most of your time underwater:

1. Wear sunscreen! When snorkelling it's easy to get absorbed in a fascinating world of fish, corals, seaweed and sand. Even in warm water you won't feel the onset of sunburn, so make sure that the whole family is wearing water-resistant sunscreen. Top it up every time you come out for a break. UV-proof rash vests can also be really helpful, especially for kids.

2. Use the buddy system. Divers and snorkelers should always stick together. Figure out who will buddy up with who before getting in the water.

3. Take a camera. Waterproof disposable film cameras are easy to find. They are ideal for handing to the kids so they can take some underwater snaps, but more serious underwater photographers will want to invest in a submersible camera housing before leaving home. Waterproof housings are available for most digital compacts and with a good one you can take your everyday camera into the water without risking damage. You'll still be able to use the zoom, flash, and other basic camera functions as normal.

4. Think about security. Either arrange to leave your wallet, phone, and passport in a secure location close to the beach or invest in adry-bag with a wrist strap and take them with you. There is nothing worse than being left behind on dry land minding the valuables while everyone else gets to swim!

5. Take advantage of local knowledge. The only way to find the best dive and snorkel spots is to ask. Tour operators and dive shops will know where to go on any given day of the year and what to look for.

6. Pay attention to warning signs. Some beaches look perfectly friendly but are subject to hidden currents, strong tidal pulls, and other dangers. If you see a sign on the beach and don't know what it means, find out before dipping a toe in the water.

7. Going on a boat tour? Take sunglasses and a hat to combat the glare off the water.

8. Look but don't touch. It can be very tempting to reach out and touch that beautiful anemone or delicate spiny urchin, but some sea creatures can deliver a nasty sting. Make sure kids understand the rules! Standing up in the water is a particular danger point. Wearing sandals or neoprene shoes will make sure feet don't get hurt by sharp rocks or defensive sea creatures.

9. Do a little preparation before leaving home. Even a gentle ocean swell can be intimidating. Unless you swim regularly, it's a good idea to take a few trips to the local pool before going on holiday. It'll help make sure you feel confident and can enjoy yourself in the water.

10. Drink plenty of water in between dives. In hot sun it's easy to get dehydrated, and even the most carefully snorkeler will probably end up swallowing a little salt water, which will deplete the body's reserves even more. Acidic liquids like orange juice can cause motion sickness so they are best avoided but make sure you get enough to drink.

Our next First Friday Wild Posters are Warren and Betsy Talbot of Married With Luggage fame! They ditched their careers, sold everything they own, and left to live their dream of traveling the world in October 2010. While they haven't made it to Africa just yet, they are looking forward to realising a life-long dream of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro on their next round the world jaunt. It's sure to be awesome adventure (and we'll keep you posted=)), but until then feast your eyes on the pair's backpack tips, as this couple have fine tuned the art of travelling light!

I love to pack, which I admit makes me rather strange. So when we decided to go on a trip around the world for a few years I was in heaven. I would get the opportunity many times over to lay out all my possessions on the bed and pack my bag to optimize my space.

One of the big challenges we faced before heading out on the road indefinitely was what would we take with us. We needed to balance between what we thought we needed, what would fit in our 65L packs, and what was simply nice to have. We have now been on the road for over a year and have a much better idea of those things that have served us well in our adventure.

Key things we brought:

High quality clothes - we spent a bit more on our clothes by buying items that are specifically made for travel. The result has been amazing. Each article that we brought with us remains in great shape, and still smells good (which is obviously very important) after a year on the road. This is so nice especially given the beating we have given then through the treks in Peru and constant laundering that must be done. The only time we have gotten rid of clothes is due to the fact we both lost over 25 pounds and they simply no longer fit. However, that is a problem we both are comfortable confronting.
Steripen - in most of South America we could not drink the water from the tap (a lesson we learned the hard way). As a result we used our Steripen constantly in order to give us clean drinking water. While bottled water is relatively cheap we simply did not feel comfortable adding even more plastic to the global landfills so the ability to sterilize our own was wonderful, and incredibly easy.
Good quality camera - while I elected not to carry a DSLR, I did invest in a great quality bridge camera. My thought was that while I love the images from my old DSLR I simply did not want to carry around the extra weight. In addition, by carrying a smaller camera I bring it with me everywhere and have gotten some great pics as a result. Also, be sure to bring extra batteries and cards. Inevitably in the key moments something is going to fail and it is so nice to have a backup available.
Rain gear - this is actually something we bought once we arrived in the UK. After walking through a few too many rain storms unprepared we decided to get ourselves some appropriate rain jackets. These are simply light outer shells that can roll up into a small bag and are easy to carry strapped to our packs.
Electronic readers (Kindle) - we both love to read but carrying books was simply not an option due to the weight. In addition, many of the places you will travel will not offer any books in your language making the idea of buying along the way not viable. Instead we each have a Kindle which is light enough to carry yet can hold more books than we could even read in 5 years on the road.

After a year on the road I've found that I still enjoy the act of packing for the next location. I lay out all the things I own in the world and then determine if I still need each item. Occasionally we'll decide we no longer need something or it is time to replace a worn out item. We'll donate the article to someone in the area and then pack what's left into the sack. Our 65L packs are lighter today than when we left even as our memories grow by the day.

Our next First Friday wild Post comes courtesy of Andrea Spirov – one half of the duo behind Inspiringtravellers.com - a blog brought to you by a couple of thirtysomething wanderers currently travelling the world full-time. These guys continually take their inner nomad to the max, Australia, Europe, New Zealand and South America featuring on their list of destinations. One day we’re sure we can tempt them to visit Africa (you bet!!!), but in the meantime (and the picture says it all really), we couldn’t think of a better couple to quiz on getting along for the long haul…

The decision to travel together as a couple long-term may evolve from a number of motivations. For us, the expat life takes us to foreign countries. Others may decide they want to take a sabbatical or fulfil a lifelong dream to see the world. Whatever the reason, couples travel will test any relationship. Take two constant companions and shuttle them along a maddening course of airports, plane rides, train trips, bus schedules and urban navigation, then see how harmonious they can keep it. A few simple strategies will increase the chances of success.

Start With a Solid Foundation

No relationship is perfect. If it was we’d be bored silly and what would be the point? But having a genuine, honest relationship with your partner before hitting the road is a key to survival. Big problems on the home front? Consider working through those before setting off. Lingering resentments will only be exacerbated when travelling.

Communicate

Many disputes boil down to a lack of communication and mismanaged expectations. Feeling a certain way? Fess up! People aren’t mind readers. This sounds like a very simple tip and yes, voiced opinions may lead to hurt feelings or disputes in the short-term. But in the long term everyone will get what they want minus the resentment.

Adopt a Short Memory (not a short fuse)

Travel days caused us problems for a long time. Rushing to make a bus or train, lack of sleep and dealing with outsiders at the airport resulted in sharp words and general bickering. We decided that nothing we said “counted” on travel days. And eventually we got ourselves together and stopped having issues on travel days entirely. Sometimes something is said that isn’t intended and it’s best to forgive and forget the minor squabbles that may crop up in pressure situations when travelling.

Keep a Good Balance

Two people are never going to agree on everything all the time. One person may have a completely different idea of how he wants to spend a particular day. It’s okay to take time out for yourselves as individuals when travelling. If time doesn’t allow trade-offs when planning activities, do them on your own. Be sure to plan “date nights” as well. Constant travel and togetherness can be tiring, especially if you aren’t used to it. It’s important to make time for yourselves as a couple.

First Friday Wild Post - Singing Zebras & Running Down A Sand Dune Naked by Tom Harvey

Listen up adventurers as our next First Friday Wild Post author is none other than Tom Harvey, a skate, snow and wake boarder who loves art, (street art more specifically), photography, and of course, Africa. Not wanting to disappoint you, but Going Naked in Namibia (& how I came face-to-face with a Rhino) are just some of the upcoming posts to be featured on Tom's blog, The Bloggiest Bloggy Blog. Intrigued? Well, with titles like that who wouldn't be, so if you don't want to miss out, we suggest you get subscribing sharpish...

Anyhow, for now it's back to the Zebras! Yes, the Serengeti is packed full of those strikingly black and white striped mammals, but Tom’s overland group was also treated to the sights and songs of “Ebra the Zebra,” a park guide and driver who we think could be the “Subo of the Bush,” - well he’s still very much an undiscovered talent, but I’m sure you’ll agree, arguably more entertaining! Want to hear more? Here's your chance to sample a slightly more off the wall Serengeti...

“I finished college in London with a summer of fun ahead of me. My original plan was to spend it like most other 18 year olds – in the park boozing and playing Frisbee. However, after meeting a traveler on return from his trip to Africa, I soon became obsessed with the idea of an overland trip.

Luckily I had a few savings and a bit of dosh from my inheritance, so after saving a little more (with three jobs!) I was ready to set off on my 43-day Kenya To Cape Town overland trip with Acacia Africa. Including the time before and after my trip, I was on this fascinating continent for around two months, so the following is an extract from just one of my many, many favourite bits….

A few days in and we’d traded our big 20-seat juggernaut for 4X4s to spend a few days under canvas in the Serengeti - one of the most incredible places I have ever heard of, let alone seen. This massive national park contains millions (literally) of animals, including miles and miles of wildebeest and zebra for as far as the eye (or even binoculars) can see!

Talking of Zebra, the driver of our 4X4 was called Ebra, but he liked to be called “Ebra the Zebra,” and he’d sing a song about himself and his favourite game park animal every time he saw one – which was a lot! He was quite the character and when it started to rain he refused that using the windscreen wipers was not necessary. Moments later even, when a waterfall style monsoon broke out, he continue to insist that they were not needed, and proceeded to drive with his head out the window – singing songs at the Zebra we passed.

Later that day, when the clouds had passed, Ebra the Zebra found us a lone lioness to gawp at. She was magnificent and hungry looking so we stuck around in the hope of seeing a kill (but not a Zebra, obviously). Although she was not on the hunt, she did walk straight up to our 4X4, even brushing her musclular body against the wheel arch and chilled out in the shade of our vehicle.

I whispered to Ebra, “Should I… err… close my window??” as the hungry looking lioness sniffed in my direction, to which Ebra laughed (loudly enough to make the beast jump) and said “Hakuna matata, you are far too noisy for her to eat.”

Erin of GoErinGo.com fame is a woman on a mission when it comes to travelling with a conscience. All the more reason we said, to ask her for a First Friday Wild Post! Having recently visited Uganda Erin has an awesome experience to share, plus a few handy tips on volunteering. If that’s what really floats your boat you can always check out our voluntours, or head off on one of our overland expeditions as we’ve got heaps of ways that will help you to give a little of yourself back to Africa. Adventure Philanthropists are a budding community of travelers that are looking for a deeper level of engagement with the countries and people we’re visiting. To do this, we Adventure Philanthropists spend a portion of our time while traveling volunteering with local communities.

An Enhanced Travel Experience: The great thing about volunteering abroad is that it actually enhances our overseas experience by:

· Helping us develop a deeper understanding of the issues we care about

· Meeting other individuals who share our interests

· Knowing that our time and talents are being used to help others

For instance, while I was in East Africa several years ago, I volunteered with an organization in Uganda. Their mission is to support the needs of and protect women and children affected by domestic violence and physical abuse.

The two-day volunteer experience turned out to be one of the highlights of my seven-week trip to the region because I:

· Met the founder, and her family. They invited me into their home for lunch and were expert guides showing me the bustling town of Tororo. We are still friends today.

· Developed a greater understanding of the abuse suffered by women and girls in East Africa generally and Uganda in particular. I now realize the lack of resources available for victims and the limited recourse within the state court and healthcare systems. Community support for the women is also in short supply.

· Traveled to Tororo, which wasn’t on my original itinerary. Tororo is a medium-sized town on the Uganda-Kenya border. It took me an entire day of planes, buses, taxis to get there and I barely made it before the border closed for the night.

How to Volunteer while Traveling: There are several ways to volunteer while you’re on the road:

1) Choose a tour company that provides voluntours. This not only simplifies the logistics of finding a nonprofit organization, but also helps to know that the local nonprofit is a legitimate organization with quality standards of care and service.

2) Look for volunteer opportunities that are advertised. One of the first things I do when I arrive in a new city is head to a café to get my bearings and read a local paper to see what’s going on. You’ll be surprised how many volunteer gigs are advertised, particularly for travelers wishing to help students learn English.

3) Do some research before leaving home. There are a plethora of websites offering volunteering experience abroad. A simple online search will provide you with an array of choices.We can all be Adventure Philanthropists!

I invite you to become an Adventure Philanthropist on your next trip to Africa. All you need is a desire to help the communities you’re visiting and an awareness of all you have to offer. I promise, your travel adventures will never be the same again!

First Friday Wild Blogger - Stay Adventurous & Head To Zim With Craig Zabransky

Craig Zabransky is our next First Friday Wild Blogger, and yet another adventurer inspired by Zimbabwe. Having recently travelled to Southern Africa you’ll be able to delve into this region of the continent on his website, Stay Adventurous – Craig completing his marathon “All Africa, All April” series just last week!

We’re hoping that his catalogue of tales and “in the moment” photography will inspire you to travel to one of the wilder parts in Africa, and if you’re crazy about conservation you can always hop on the truck with us and take part in Zimbabwe’s grounding breaking lion project.

Going Back To School in Zimbabwe…

In a country where a $50,000,000,000,000 dollar bill might get you $1 USD from a tourist (only as a souvenir, the currency is worthless) and unemployment comtinues to rise and reach 90% in some areas, the future might seem bleak. Very bleak.

In fact most tourists, skip the country on safety concerns or don't travel anywhere outside the Victoria Falls area along the mighty Zambezi River and Zambian border. Zimbabwe might be considered a country with little hope. But one stop on my travels changed my mind.

When traveling in Africa everyone seems to visit a school. I'll admit I thought, is it cliche? Would it move me? Change me? Well, it did.

After our arrival, we were warmly received by students with song and dance. Local customs proudly remain on curriculum. I wondered what happened to such classes in my state side study.

Also, the students learn in both their local language and English. This enabled it much easier to converse. (I don't speak many African languages). We learned about their life and they asked abut ours in an structured Q&A session. Then afterwards, its free time - we walked around and visited other classrooms and its library (donated by tourists) to talk with the students. We even had the opportunity to donate supplies or funds to the school directly. Most, if not all, did.

But the joy for me was watching the children. You see the shy smiles and the joy in their soul. You see surprising western influences and the pride when they show their workbooks. And best of all you see kids being kids; kids being happy. A future does exist here.

Eventually as the bus pulled away, I stared out the window. My thoughts reflected about my good fortunes in life. From my education to my life as an American. I am very thankful. But I smiled, there I was on the adventure of a lifetime across Africa, and all I really searched for and wanted at that moment - to be as happy as those kids. And feeling that, I know there is hope for Zimbabwe.

Our Earth Day Top 30 - How To Stay Green Out On The Road...

Featuring everything from what to take to how to travel this is a pretty comprehensive starter for ten, but if you’ve got an innovative idea you'd like to throw into the mix, come join us on the blog, Facebook or Twitter!

1. Use refillable water bottles

2. Pack recycled toilet tissue

3. Bring a solar charger for all your "techy" must haves

4. Use public transport (our fave, chilling on the colorful matatus in Nairobi!)

5. Shop in local markets, avoid chains

6. Visit a few charity stores before the off! Dig deep as you might well find some awesome travel treasures

7. Take rechargeable batteries

8. Tie your trip into local events and make a greater contribution to the local community

9. If you’re travelling independently quiz the hostel on their ethical commitment

10. Use a quick dry antibacterial towel and re-use

11. Pack light, as less weight will minimise fuel costs

12. Buy a backpack that’s made from recyclable materials

13. Take shorter showers

14. Buy fresh food and avoid packaging

15. Use biodegradable cleaning products

16. Wind up torches might sound archaic, but they definitely get a green thumbs up!

17. Swap books with your fellow adventurers out on tour, and look out for book exchanges in hostels

18. Buy a"Green Map!" Great idea and they cover a sizeable portion of Africa…

19. Bring reusable containers to cut down on food wastage

20. Get off the beaten track, but follow the designated trails

21. Recycle your travel gear and guides on your return

22. Choose an environmentally friendly sunscreen

23. Take a little of the lingo with you...

24. Locate a recommended greening organisation, work out your mileage and send a donation to cover your carbon footprint

25. Turn off and uplug

26. Choose an itinerary where you can voluntour and give back to the community or conservation project

27. Book online and only print what’s necessary

28. Choose destinations and projects that share your green commitment
