According to the exit polls, younger people have voted substantially more Democratic than other age groups in each election since 2004, while older voters have cast more ballots for Republican candidates in each election since 2006.

The latest national polls suggest this pattern may well continue in 2012. Millennial generation voters are inclined to back Barack Obama for reelection by a wide margin in a matchup against Mitt Romney, the Republican candidate who has run the strongest against Obama in many polls. By contrast, Silent generation voters are solidly behind Romney.

In between the youngest and the oldest voters are the Baby Boom generation and Generation X. Famous Rabbis taught and worked here and made Vienna into a center of Jewish knowledge. This lively and creative environment was forced to an abrupt end in 1420-21 with the expulsion and murder of the Viennese Jews. This virtual tour allows us to walk through the Vienna of the 14th Century and showcases the Jewish festivals and customs of that time, helping us understand how the life of this medieval Jewish community was organized.

Link: The Jewish district in medieval Vienna

You can explore the digitised content via the British Library Catalogue. Included are full details of each digitised book, with an inventory of the contents of each, searchable by composer name, title of composition, date and subject, and with links to the digitised content. You can also browse the digitised content by going straight to Royal Holloway's digital repository.
Links:

Early Music Online

Access via British Library Catalogue

Access via Royal Holloway's digital repository

Developed in partnership with Google, the new website gives users access to searchable, fast-loading, high-resolution images of the scrolls, as well as short explanatory videos and background information on the texts and their history. The Dead Sea Scrolls, which include the oldest known biblical manuscripts in existence, offer critical insight into Jewish society in the Land of Israel during the Second Temple Period, the time of the birth of Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism. Five complete scrolls from the Israel Museum have been digitized for the project at this stage and are now accessible online.

Links:

Digital Dead Sea Scrolls Official Site

About the Digital Dead Sea Scrolls Project

In intercultural philosophy we see above all a new orientation and new practice of philosophy – of a philosophy that requires an attitude of mutual respect, listening, and learning.

It entails a new orientation because, in acknowledgment of the cultural situatedness of philosophy, claims must prove themselves interculturally, and culture and cultures must be consciously kept in view as the context of philosophising. It entails a new practice because this consciousness demands a departure from an individual, mono-cultural production of philosophy and seeks instead a dialogical, process-oriented, fundamentally open polyphony of cultures and disciplines.

polylog seeks to realize such practices in an intercultural dialogue among philosophers as well as other interested scholars and members of society – in a philosophical polylogue. The project pursues this aim by providing a virtual platform for the world-wide discussion of topics in intercultural philosophy. Intercultural philosophy is not thereby intended as a new theory, discipline, or school to be established. Rather, the diversity of intentions and approaches should be met with the greatest possible openness as well as academic seriousness – as much as possible in the appropriate form and manner.

Link: Polylog: Forum for Intercultural Philosophy

The Arab spring has raised new hope about the social and political reform in the Arab countries. It has prompted European societies to rethink their often quoted stereotype that Islam is not compatible with democracy or liberalism. At the same time Prime Minister David Cameron and Chancellor Angela Merkel have announced that multiculturalism has failed. Of course Germany has never practiced any sort of multiculturalism for it to fail (or succeed)! And multiculturalism in Britain seems to be alive and strong even if it has gone through a period of critical rethinking. In this online debate organised by the ACCEPT PLURALISM project, we want to explore some of the limits of the currently used concepts and policy approaches, concentrating in particular on the notion of multiculturalism on one hand, and that of integration, as they are both used with so many different meanings and connotations that they some time risk confusing things. Professor Tariq Modood's paper starts the debate.

Link: “Multiculturalism and Integration: struggling with confusions” by Tariq Modood

The 1882 Project aims to work with Congress to pass resolutions expressing regret for the implementation of the Chinese Exclusion Laws, and to raise national awareness.

The Chinese Exclusion Laws involved legislation Congress passed between 1879 and 1904 that explicitly discriminated against persons of Chinese descent based on race. The laws imposed increasingly severe restrictions on immigration and naturalization. In the last 10 years these communities have jump-started this growth by soaring 43.3 percent—more than any other racial group. Consequently, growth in the Asian American and Pacific Islander electorates has also risen. To meet these constituents needs, responsive, equitable policies are increasingly necessary to best represent the multitude of Asian and Pacific Islander-descended communities.

Link: Infographic: The Growth of Asian American and Pacific Islander Communities

Sponsored by the ruler of Qatar, Al-Jazeera began as a satellite station that focused on developments in the Middle East. From that starting point, it has grown by leaps and bounds to provide a truly international and global news network rivalling CNN. Today, Al-Jazeera covers news and analysis from Africa to Asia, from the United States to China. U.S. viewers can watch Al-Jazeera live on the web.

Link: Watch Al-Jazeera live on the web.

.
