Details of Peter Pan Field Trip on Saturday 4/18/09:

The pre-show talk begins at 6:45 p.m. in the Jacob's Gallery. You do not need a ticket to get in.
Keri Wisely will have everyone's tickets. However she will not arrive until 7:00 p.m. and will stand near the "Will Call" box office before the show. Your tickets WILL NOT be held at the Hult Center box office.
Peter Pan starts at 7:30 p.m.
If you arrive later than 7:25, Keri will already be seated, and there will be no way for you to pick up your ticket. PLEASE DON'T BE LATE!

The Character Detective spotted Alayna, Taylor, and Erik showing INITIATIVE last week! Thanks for looking for ways to help!

OMSI Transportation

If you were late getting tickets to the Davinci Exhibit through the school you can get free tickets to the Omsi Davinci exhibit by purchasing 8 gallons of gas or more at participating Chevron gas stations in the Portland Area. Offer expires May 3rd. This only covers the $16 Davinci entrance, not the Omsi entrance fee which is $11.
We have a student who needs a ride (Logic age). If you have a free spot in your vehicle, please let Mrs. Sahnow know.

Charter School Survey

The charter school survey is available now at http://www.ode.state.or.us/surveys/default.aspx. This survey is to be completed by staff, parents, and students and is open until May 15. Please complete this survey as soon as possible- a laptop will be set up and available for staff, parents, and students to take the survey here at ACE too.

Budget Cuts Affect ACE

Unfortunately, ACE will not be receiving full funding for the school year after all. Our budget cut is approximately $9000. In order to compensate for this shortfall, the ACE Board voted to take the following measures, effective immediately:

1) Tutoring hours: each student will have a maximum of 9 hours remaining until June 30. You may work with your tutor to spread these hours out for the next three months or may use them up in April and May if mutually agreed upon.

2) Mentorship: $50 is being deducted from each student's accounts.

We are looking at other ways we can cut funding and will keep you apprised if anything changes. Thanks for understanding!

Health Standards

It's time to start turning in your Health Standards paperwork! If you need another copy, please sign up at the front table. A copy will then be placed in your mailbox next week.

Academic Dean's Available

Mentorship Opportunities!

Susan Jones, a veteran homeschool mom and physical education teacher, is offering 4 (four) PE classes this next term for homeschooling families. In some classes she will be co-teaching with her husband, Kevin Jones, and teenage son.

Mrs. Jones has taught PE classes for homeschoolers for over 10 (ten) years and is not only interested in teaching athletics, but also in building character.She expects obedience and respect in all her classes, and tolerates no nonsense, but her number one goal is for every child to have fun. Not only that, she has already been pre-approved to teach mentorship classes for ACE!!

(Personal note from Mrs. Hansen: "My girls have been taking classes from Mrs. Jones for 7 years and absolutely adore her and her classes!)

Classes will begin the week of February 2^nd. All classes are held in the gymnasium at the U.S. Sportsplex building on West 11st Street in Eugene, across the street from Wal-Mart. All class fees are charged at ONLY $5.00 per hour per student, making each 1.5 hour class, $7.50 per week. Parents of participating students will pay the U.S. Sportsplex directly and be reimbursed by ACE from their children's mentorship accounts.

If you are interested in any of the classes listed below, please contact Mrs. Hansen, our Mentorship Coordinator, to get signed up.

Soccer for girls, grades 6-12 Mondays 11:45-1:15

Dodgeball, Relays and Tag Mondays 1:45-3:15

Grades 3-12 (Dodgeball is played with the small poof balls in this class; Mrs. Jones says "It's not for the faint of heart, a very fun, but aggressive class." (Only 5 spots left in this class!)

Basketball, grades 5-12 Wednesdays 1:45-3:15

Volleyball, grades 6-12 Fridays 1:30-3:00

2. School Board Visit- February 10. Next week a few of the South Lane School Board members will be visiting ACE classes. Please welcome our guests!

3. If you have questions about the Health & PE Standards, please review the directions and check with Mrs. Sahnow if you need more assistance.

4. Upcoming Shakespeare trip (to Ashland, OR) for ages 13 + (or with Mrs. Zeller’s permission). Information and sign-up sheet is available on the front table. Registration deadline is February 10 (next week- tickets sell fast for this event!).

5. Statewide Assessment testing begins soon! Mrs. Wolowicz will be contacting families with students in grades 3 – 8 and 10 in order to schedule testing. Students will receive an ice cream treat when they pass each test!

6. The Character Detective is on the look-out and spotted good character in Nicole, one of our Grammar Stage students. Nicole saw a job that needed to be done during craft time (labeling photos for the students) and she jumped in to help! Thank you to Nicole for finding a way to help, not a way to hide and for being glad for the chance to serve. 

In addition, the kids will tour the farm & feed livestock (dress appropriately for inclement weather and mud!). Don't forget to sign up at the front table- we need a head count for supplies. 1) Field-trip to the Science Factory on April 4. If you have questions or would like to sign up, please check with Kay Lynne Keene (541-844-8045).

2) Primary/Grammar Field-trip on April 8 to Dr. Backer's office. Please park on 16^th street or Safeway. The students will receive a tour of the office, an oral health overview, and goody bags! Please let Kay Lynne know if your student will be attending.

3) Saturday, April 26^th Events

Schedule:

9 am 12:00 noon SAT Writing Class with Karen Zeller (for Rhetoric students)

10 am 12:00 noon "Introduction to Sculpture" class for Primary/Grammar & Logic students

12:00 12:30 pm Potluck Lunch (bring something to share; sign-up sheet on front table)

12:30 3:30 pm "Introduction to Sculpture" class for Rhetoric students

4) Please turn in library books when you are finished with them. Books can be turned into the office or left in our mail box (outside the facility entrance).

5) Would you or your student like to take a sample Oregon State Assessment? Go to http://www.oaks.k12.or.us. Click on "sample test" on the left.

6) Dictionary / Encyclopedia / Reference search bar now available on the ACE website! Go to www.AceClassicalEd.org. On the home page you'll find a search bar with lots of choices for searching topics.

Primary/Grammar Field Trip:

Tuesday April 8 at 2:15 we will be taking a tour of Dr. Backers office, located right next to the Espresso Barn and just across the street from Safeway on Main Street. Parking is limited so please park on 16th Street or at Safeway. The children will be given a tour of the offices and given a demonstration in oral health care. There will be goody bags given out to all who attend.
