The one-day course was attended by ASK instructors from across the UK and Ireland.

Covered on the day were the general syllabus and specific training methods to improve Yoko Geri Ke-age (side rising side-kick). Sensei Hazard has many-a-time emphasised the  effectiveness of this kick in Self-Defense scenarios and it is fantastic seeing the link made between Classical Kihon (basics) and application.

Big congratulations to Padraig Hassett and Maurice Keane on receiving their Shodan diplomas from Sensei Hazard. They did excellent gradings in December 2016.

Congratulations everyone who graded for their Mon and Kyu grades. Sensei Hazard gave a lot of feedback on what needs to be worked on. Particularly the two side kicks. We welcomed a few new brown belts too just in time for Sunday’s mind-blowing Kata class.

Sunday’s brown and blackbelt class covered Gojushiho Dai. A very technical and subtle kata for 5th dan and above. A kata for older people who use technique to win against an assailant rather than strength.  Imbalancing and takedowns as well as ways of turning disadvantage to a winning situation were covered along with some hints from the spirit of Nakayama-Sensei and Enoeda-Sensei.

Many thanks to all that travelled to attend the class. We are delighted to have you in the Dojo sharing knowledge.

HISTORIC DECISION: KARATE IN THE OLYMPIC GAMES!

Karate is in the Olympic Games. The 129th Session of the International Olympic Committee being held in Rio de Janeiro has decided to incorporate the sport of Karate in the program of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. This decision represents an outstanding and ground-breaking moment for this ancient discipline.

The hopes and dreams of millions of Karatekas around the world came true today. After hundreds of years of history of this sport, and following many years of hard work by the WKF, the Karate family has finally fulfilled their dream of seeing this discipline in the Olympic Games, which will be accomplished precisely in Tokyo, the capital city of the birth nation of the sport.

In its press release, IOC described the decision as “the most comprehensive evolution of the Olympic program in modern history”.

We had 10 members in 20 events throughout the day and came home with 13 medals. I would like to thank the parents for taking time out of their busy schedule to give a helping hand at this international competition. Very proud of all students today, well done.

EKF Kumite Judge B, and keeping the previous qualifications..

Best of luck to Sensei who is in Turkey for four days as a judge for the EKF Continental Championships for European Regions. Sensei will be resitting his EKF Judge exams.
Sensei is one of only two IRISH representatives there.
