Information Literacy Competency Standards for Nursing

The Association of College & Research Libraries has recently approved information literacy standards for nursing. They can be used to guide information literacy instruction at all educational levels -- including continuing education for practicing nurses.

New Relevance Sort in PubMed

The National Library of Medicine recently added a relevance sort to results in the PubMed database of medical literature. To access it, perform a search, then click the Display Settings link to choose the Relevance sort.

According to the NLM:

"The relevance sort order for search results is based on an algorithm that analyzes each PubMed citation that includes the search terms. For each search query, "weight" is calculated for citations depending on how many search terms are found and in which fields they are found. In addition, recently-published articles are given a somewhat higher weight for sorting."

This new way of looking at results just might connect you to relevant research more quickly. Give it a try using the ACC Libraries PubMed Link which shows our holdings. As usual, let me know if you have questions about PubMed, journal access, or any of the other ACC Libraries databases.

Health Online 2013

The Pew Research Center's Health Online 2013 report was released today. It points out just how many people are looking online for health information, and how many of them run into pay firewalls that cause frustration and may cause searchers to give up. Interestingly, there may be a link between search persistence and income levels.

The Eagle Dawg blog, written by a medical librarian, points out some interesting highlights.Yet another eye-opening report from the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

I've started adding newly acquired book materials to a "Recently Added Titles" tab on the discpline-specific library Research Guides. Not all disciplines have them yet, but most do. As new titles come in, I will add them to these lists. Each one is linked to the catalog where you can find more details about a book's format, location and availability. You can access the "Recently Added Titles" tab under the Finding Books tab on most guides.

EasyBib has a FREE app for both iPhones and Android phones that let's you scan the UPC barcode on a book and get a citation in either MLA, APA or Chicago format which can then be emailed. Share this with your students -- this can be quite handy in creating Works Cited pages.

I've tried this with several titles in the Eastview library and it's worked great every time.

BlausenIt Medical Animations Extension for Chrome

Blausen Medical Communications has created a free extension to the Google Chrome browser that links medical terms on webpages to animations and graphics produced by Blausen. This video explains how it all works. It could be very helpful to students taking A&P, or indeed anyone in the health sciences needing a brief physiology video snippet.

Two New Library Databases

We now have access to two new databases through Library Services via the statewide TexShare consortium. Job and Career Accelerator helps users explorer career possibilities and work through the job search process.

Of particular interest to health science students is Learning Express , which has online Occupation Practice Tests in various health science areas. Some that may be of interest are:

If you or your students have been getting questions about West Nile Virus, MedlinePlus offers a good starting point to trusted information sources. The site points users to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other reputable, front-line resources.

Although MedlinePlus is often considered a consumer health portal, it can be a great place to start in-depth professional queries.

NLM Drug Information Portal for Mobile Devices

The National Library of Medicine's Drug Information Portal is now available for mobile devices. The portal provides information on over 30,000 drugs. Drugs can be searched by generic and trade names, or by category. Results link to chemical structures, clinical trial information, information from Medline Plus, and searches in PubMed.

PubMed Filter Locations Because PubMed is...

PubMed Filter Locations

Because PubMed is now showing major filtering categories on the left on the search results screen, I have removed those from the custom filter section that appears on the right. So don't fret if a filter you used to use on the right hand side of the screen doesn't appear -- you should be able to find it on the left.
