Bike to Work Week is coming up and I often get asked the question, “How do you bike to work when you’re a business person? I don’t have a shower at work and I have appointments that I need my car for. I just can’t do it”.

Of course you can! First off, why on earth do you need your car for appointments? I ride my bike to meetings and I swear I get there at least 10 minutes before everyone else because I didn’t have to find parking, fiddle with the meter, and then hoof it to the appointment. The door to door advantage of a bike is huge, not to mention bypassing all the traffic.

I know what you are thinking, “Yeah but I’ll have to change into my spandex before and after the meeting.” No you don’t. Just ride to work in your business clothes! If your bike commute is more than half an hour, maybe you might want to bring a change of clothes, but other than that, just wear what you are going to wear.

“May-be, but I’ll arrive at the meeting all sweaty.” Don’t ride so hard then! Take it easy, buy an upright cruiser like me and

Mandy Farmer heading out to her meeting

enjoy the scenery as you ride to your meeting. I might show up a little fresh faced and out of breath, but I come to the meeting pumped and raring to go!

“I don’t want Helmet Hair.” My vanity got over having perfect hair years ago. I’d much rather have a fitter, healthier, more alive body that a bit of flattened hair. Besides, you get used to it after a while. Who knows, maybe Helmet Head will be all the rage?

“What about sweat?” Wear deodorant.

“I’m scared of cars.” Google all the bike routes and bike lanes in your city. Sometimes it’s just a matter of planning. “Yeah, but sometimes they run out and I get on a scary stretch of road.” True, this is a drag. What I do is carefully ride on the sidewalks dismount around pedestrians.

“Where on earth am I going to put my briefcase?!” Buy a front carrier: www.paulcomp.com/flatbed

“Okay, you’ve almost got me convinced but I just can’t give up my high heels… they make my outfit!” I totally agree, so you should just wear them. Riding in high heels is strangely no different that riding in sneakers (except that it makes a much more profound statement) because the heel part of the shoe isn’t even on the pedal. High heels or not, it’ll make no difference to your riding experience.

Give it a go for one day, just one day, and let me know how it went!

Note from the editor: Accent Inns is proud to support Bike to Work Week in Victoria, Vancouver and Kelowna.
Yesterday was Earth Day which was a perfect opportunity for me to reflect.

I’m thrilled to congratulate my whole team on achieving and maintaining a rating of 4 Green Keys! Yes, that’s right, all five of the Accent Inns throughout BC are rated as Four Green Key Properties by the Hotel Association of Canada. This is the second highest available rating and one that shows national industry leadership and commitment to protecting the environment through wide ranging policies and practices.

We’ve received this distinction because of hard work and so I’d especially like to thank our team:

Housekeepers: the in-room recycling, all that sorting and organizing that you have been doing, makes such a difference. And don’t forget the countless lights that you turn off and heaters that you turn down.

Maintenance: installing energy efficient lighting everywhere and keeping all our appliances running smoothly and efficiently.

Front Desk: diligent recycling of paper.

Head office: making the environment a priority with the following decisions: soap dispensers in all the rooms, acquiring sensor AC controls, garbage audits, and calculating our carbon footprint.

In addition to all that we’ve also forged relationships with locally-based environmental groups such as The Land Conservancy and The Sierra Club of BC that are working to bring about long-term environmental change to our region. Our Fish for the Future program is another example of not only how we support organizations like the Pacific Salmon Foundation and Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, but also how important it is to draw attention to their great efforts.

Here’s what Michelle Bonner, Climate Smart’s Director of Training says about us: “Accent Inns has demonstrated its leadership and commitment to reducing its carbon footprint through its participation in the Climate Smart program. By conducting a thorough inventory of its greenhouse gas emissions, Accent Inns now has a baseline against which to track the impact of its initiatives. As well as being good for the planet, this is smart business practice.”

How do we stack up to our competition? Well, it’s true that Fairmont properties do have 5 Green Keys and we congratulate them on that. It’s also true that many more of our direct competitors, not that I’m going to mention any names, have only have 3 Green Keys. So our 4 key rating and efforts with our community partners really make us stand out!

Way to go team!!

Mandy

Hot on the heels of my secrets to success blog post, here’s a random smattering of shortcuts and tricks of the trade that I often employ to help me get the most out of my day. Please note some of these are desperate measures and are not to be used daily!

For instance, the first one – Dry Shampoo – should only be used on occasions when you are really pressed for time or just can’t stand the thought of wash, rinse, repeat, blow-dry, style, hairspray routine. Just sprinkle this dry powder on the roots of your hair and voila! No need to shower, but maybe an extra layer of deodorant wouldn’t hurt.

Or how about those circumstances when you are at a big-time function expected to shine, schmooze and dazzle all those around you, but you also have a 7:00am breakfast meeting the next day where you are the presenter? White wine is your friend. As much as I love a nice big juicy red, I know it’s going to come back and bite me the next day.

One timesaver that I use every day is to never waste a lunch. I normally have a lunch date with some inspirational person or a client that I want or do business with. No lunch date? Then I do an intense 45 minute workout at Steve Nash Fitness Club (no time for a shower so I take along mini towelettes and that extra layer of deodorant!). On the very rare occasion that I have nothing booked, I’ll grab some of my trade magazines and sales reports that I need to catch up on and spend a leisurely hour reading while drinking green tea and eating sushi at my favourite sushi joint Chikara here in Victoria.

A great trick that I’m still trying to master from my dad, Terry Farmer, is to develop my own organizational system and then stick with it. A great book to get you started on this subject is Getting Things Done by David Allen. My dad still uses his tried and true method of a small monthly daytimer in his pocket (yup, a paper one) but you can be assured if he says he’ll do something, he’ll do it. There’s no digital dog eating his homework. He’s got a system for carrying forward items, following up on certain topics and keeping notes handy in the right place all within his calendar. No matter what your system is, just make sure you stick with it.

Multitasking ideas: I watch Ted Talks online while I’m doing things that are a bit mundane or repetitive, like signing cheques or payroll. I’ll stand up and stretch when on any phone call. Hanging out with my kids we will often colour but really I’m doing pictorial representations of our business plan (a great way to look at a problem with different eyes!). My personal favourite is to call in from the comfort of my home for conference calls, that way I can fold laundry with the speaker phone on and have my laptop close by.

Mandy Farmer rides her bike to work

And my last, but most passionate and productive timesaver is to park your car and ride your bike to work, and to all of your meetings. By doing this, I’ve ticked off my workout for the day, I’ve had a good half hour of rejuvenating fresh air without the radio nattering away at me, allowing me some serious productive thinking time (guess where I wrote this blog), and I make a very positive memorable statement when walking into meeting: “You rode your bike here?!”.

Have you got any tricks?

When it comes to success I sure don’t have all the answers, so I reached out to people who I think are very successful to get their take on this topic. But, before you read any further, the first and absolutely most important step to take when it comes to success is to define it. Success could mean giving up all your worldly belongings and meditating on top of a mountain, or finding that gorgeous trophy husband who spends his entire day cooking, cleaning and eagerly anticipating your arrival. It’s all in how you define it. Here are a few secrets from successful people in my life:

I have a friend – let’s call her Malene. She’s a fit and balanced mom of 2 teenaged boys, a vegetable gardener, an artist, a full time government employee, a bookkeeper for her husband’s business, and so much more. She attributes her energy to power vegetable juice shakes in the morning. With the amount that she gets done, always with a smile on her face, I’m seriously contemplating choking down some of her green lumpy potion. I’ll keep you posted.

Then there’s my hairdresser – I’ll call her Rene. She’s a hoot, even if she has the flu. Her secret to success is to just laugh her way through it all, the good times and the bad times. I swear, one day she was cutting my hair and she looked awful, which is extremely unusual as she’s the most gorgeous gal you’ll ever meet. But on this day she looked so miserable and haggard with a cold, yet we laughed and giggled about how horrible she looked! It doesn’t matter what kind of day Rene is having, she’s having a blast no matter what.

John Espley, our Business Development Manager, says his secret to success is actually other people’s success! He is forever surrounding himself and learning from “successful people”. His favorite thing is connecting his contacts and forging partnerships that many times have nothing to do with him at all. Oh, but they do have something to do with him, don’t they? He comes out with knowledge he’s gained from these successful people, becomes the total hero having brought people together (and gets immense personal satisfaction from this) and now has 2 great friends who love him dearly and he jokingly says owe him one!

Another friend – I’ll call her Michelle – I have tremendous respect for. Like a lot of women out there she juggles the whole work thing, kid thing, wife thing, home thing. Where her success secret comes into play is that Michelle actually has her own life in addition to all of these things tugging and pulling at her: she’s a hard core mountain biker and skier. How is she able to do this with all the other things on her plate? Well, she steered her kids toward sports that she can do withthem on the weekends. So instead of sitting in a hockey rink freezing her bored ass off, she’s ripping up the trails with her two boys! Nice.

So what’s my personal secret to success which I’ll probably always be working on? Good posture. It can convey so much confidence even if you lack it, which of course can happen from time to time! The best way to bring that into your life on a regular basis is a good yoga class which will teach you the basics of good posture as well as give you an ongoing weekly reminder to really make it stick.

How do you define success and what are your secrets for achieving it?

Confession: I love BC Ferries

How I love thy chocolate buffet filled with Roger’s chocolates, decadent cupcakes, chocolate mousse cups, Florentines, four different kinds of chocolate cake, Grand Marnier Mountains, and - oh my, I must go back for more!

I love the serenity of the Seawest Lounge, the chaos of the playground, the flat screen TV’s playing the hockey games, the coffee machines (Dear Lord, thank you for blessing the BC Ferries with Americano machines that make divine coffee for us unfortunate coffee snobs of the world).

I love the Smart Start breakfast (it’s actually good!), the wireless internet, and best of all, the fact that I can get my toes done while en route to a business meeting in Vancouver? Heaven.

Oh sure, the line-ups suck, but I don’t wait in line anymore. I just make a reservation. Basically – let’s all admit it – we have a habit of bitching about BC Ferries. We love to complain, we love to moan, but really, when I think about it, BC Ferries has been a part of my whole life for a very long time, touching me in ways I didn’t think possible (seriously, read on).

I remember as a little girl playing up at the front of the beige interior Queen of Burnaby, beneath the watchful eye of the queen.

BC Ferries trip to Vancouver Island - very scenic cruise

Then I’d wanderoff to peruse the magazine stand for an Archie comic book after a quick gawk at the big kids in the arcade. I remember looking forward to the chicken strips, fries, and the gravy, oh, the gravy!! And now my kids love the ferry rides, wandering around on the outer decks, looking at the islands, wondering which ones they are, checking out the life rafts and other boats on the horizon. They love the play areas, the buffet (young kids eat free), and we’ve even recovered (twice!) a precious stuffed animal that was left on board through the care and attention of the crew.

But it was really in one of my darkest hours that BC Ferries really came through for me. I was pregnant with our first, just past the five month mark, and heading over to Vancouver to visit with family, when I got the call from my family doctor that something was drastically wrong and I need to do an about-face and return to Victoria immediately. I had just driven on the boat, we had just left the dock and we were still 90 minutes from Vancouver. I sat in my car as the tears streamed down my face and in complete shock wondered how on earth I was going to turn my car around and get back on the boat, while collecting my husband from the other side.

Mandy's children love BC Ferries

I managed to make my way to the Chief Steward who took me in her arms and led me up to a state room. She got me tea, she got someone to sit with me, and she took my car keys and made sure that someone would turn my car around for me. I never paid for that state room and of course, no one asked.

We lost that baby, but are now blessed with two gorgeous little kids, and a sincere appreciation for the world class ferry system we all fortunate to have.

I think it’s high time we all embraced, celebrated and promoted BC Ferries for what it is: a gorgeous mini-cruise through some of the most picturesque islands in the world with all-you-can-eat Roger’s Chocolates in the buffet.

You do not know what shame that confession brings me. My only consolation was that I was 7 months pregnant. Well, the first time it happened. The second time I have no excuse, other than being female, and in the corporate world tears are not cool. And that brings me to my topic today: the ups and downs of being a female CEO.

I was recently interviewed by a journalist writing about woman in business and was asked, “What do you like about being a woman?” At first I thought this was a ridiculously irrelevant question and wondered if a man would ever be asked the same question? I gave some silly answer, but I admit I’ve thought about it a bit more since then.

Though my emotional side might be a downfall, it is also one of my strengths. The woman’s touch that I bring to the role of CEO places an emphasis on personal relationships be it with my customers, suppliers, and above all, my team. I try to have a connection with each employee, writing personal notes on every pay cheque, working alongside them in the housekeeping department, or asking for the valued opinion.

As customers you may have received a hand written note from myself or my father over the years. I write thousands of personal letters each year which has my chiropractor and physiotherapist hopping, yet it is extremely personally gratifying
as it allows me to connect with the people so important to our success.

Perhaps one of the biggest challenges I have of being a female CEO is switching gears from being the boss to loving wife to mother of two and then back to CEO again. Sometimes on my way into work I have to make a serious mental adjustment, “I am the CEO, I am the CEO”. I do, really! Home is home and it is so natural to be a mom, but the working world requires more fortitude. I have to adjust my personality to be more assertive and if the situation warrants it, more demanding.

Aside from wearing sassy frocks (my answer to that journalist) I love being a leader; an inspiration to young women; getting that depressingly low percentage of women-on-boards number up; collaborating with my team to make Accent Inns better and I love it when I’m so moved by happiness or compassion that I get a bit verklempt.

So there you go, you’ve heard my deep dark secret. What about you, have you ever cried on the job?

25 years ago my dad Terry made the drastic decision to take a complete left turn in his career, leaving the construction industry to dip his toes into the fun, vibrant world of tourism. Where was I during this chaotic time in his life? Did I even notice what was up with my dad? Well, I was an oblivious little 12 year old, being chauffeured around in the back seat of station wagon, and you know what? I did notice something weird happening. My dad started humming. He’d hum in this high pitched, off key sort of jubilant way. When I’d say to him, “um, Dad? You’re like totally embarrassing me in front of my friends?!” he wouldn’t know what I was talking about! “I’m not humming” he’d protest!

Yes, he was humming. Accent Inns were humming along with a phenomenal inaugural year. Plans were being made for expansion. Terry was starting to travel the world enticing tourists from far away to give us a try. And I’ve never seen my dad happier in his whole life. He had finally found an industry that he loved, a job that inspired him, and a team that became his extended family.

Thanks to all our staff for 25 great years! seen here our Burnaby hotel staff celebrating an almost as important milestone, the 2010 olympics

And it’s that extended family who we chose to celebrate our 25th anniversary with: our team. Today marks the last day of our 25 Days of Giveaways where every day we have given our employees something whether it be a special 25th anniversary edition of our in-room rubber ducks or draws for 500,000 More Rewards, 5 Beautyrest mattress sets, power tools, cinema gift packs, deluxe sheet sets and the list goes on and on. It’s thanks to our team that we’ve been able to stay such a great locally owned company.

Mandy Farmer, proud to follow in her father's footsteps and looking forward to another 25 years!

So after 25 days of thanking our team, I’d now like to wish my dad Terry a happy 25th anniversary of achieving and finding his passion. It’s so wonderful to see someone who they love loving what they do. And all of us at Accent Inns have benefited dearly from it. Thanks dad.

I’m in love. I’m exhilarated. Optimistic. Refreshed. And yes, a little out of breath. As usual, rain or shine, I’ve biked into work this morning, and feel awesome and excited to start my day. Who am I in love with?? Don’t worry honey, yes, it’s still you, but my new bicycle is the hot new love of my life. It’s a girl-bike which means I can wear a dress, my uniform of choice instead of a business suit, and it’s a retro styled Amsterdam upright two wheeler, in raspberry with wood trim and leather seats. Mmm-hmm!

I’m especially excited because we launched our Bike LOVE, a program born out of our passion for cycling and encouraging people to bring their bikes with them when exploring a city.

Years ago when I cycled across Europe solo I discovered that biking was by far the best way to see a country. Though I don’t tour as much anymore with 2 little kids in tow, we almost always travel with our bikes whether it’s to go mountain biking, explore the city, or to keep fit while on a business trip.

Mandy Farmers loves riding her bike to work

For more details on our Bike Love program, click on the link and in the meantime, here’s my Top 5 things you should do to get your bike ready for summer:

1) Blow the dust off it. It’s been a while hasn’t it!

2) Put air in the tires. Look on the side of the tire and it will tell you what the proper inflation is. Or just do the squeeze test as I do… squish, squish… feels good to me! One thing I notice biking around town is how many people do not have properly inflated tires. Soft squishy tires makes bike riding a slog and a misery. Properly inflated tires is like taught slingshot. Be careful to not overinflate as you can get a flat. Unsure? See #4.

3) Oil the chain. You don’t need a lot, because excess will just fly off and get all over you. Not cool. You just need a little light lubrication in the spring and summer. Unsure about how much? See #4.

4) Visit your local bike store and have it tuned up. In addition to putting air in your tires and oiling the chain, they will make sure that your gears are adjusted and shifting properly, your brakes are in good working condition, the steering is aligned and that all the crucial moving parts are well lubricated. A good bike shop will also help insure your bike fits you properly. For instance, making sure your seat is at the right height, your handlebars are in the proper place, you are comfortable and the size is right. They also might tell you if it’s time to replace that relic you’ve been dragging around since Grade 9.

5) Go for a short ride before you go for a long one. It’s a great idea to cruise around the neighbourhood first to get used to traffic and to make sure that everything is working properly.

I'd rather eat at a restaurant, thanks.

People always ask why we don’t do a free breakfast like other chains that include it. And it’s very simple why we do not: we offer high quality, affordable family restaurants at all our locations and we also have kitchenettes in many our rooms for those who want to bring their own (and all rooms have fridges).

Basically the bottom line is that we don’t want to offer anything unless we can be proud of it. Many hotels that offer these free breakfasts do so with low quality ingredients such as powdered eggs, nuked low grade frozen sausages (I can only imagine what goes in them) and other highly processed inexpensive and non-nutritious foods like donuts in order to keep their costs in line.

With our tag line being Quality Where it Counts we just can’t serve that crap to our guests! And, if we went and offered a higher quality breakfast (grade A eggs, real bacon…etc.) our costs would be out of line, we wouldn’t be competitive, and we’d have to raise our rates. Not cool.

With breakfast being the most important, and my personal favorite meal of the day, I don’t want to sacrifice it for low cost junk or an intestine clogging carb buffet. I prefer to leave it to the experts at ABC Country Restaurant, IHOP, or White Spot. I also love my homemade granola, fruit and yogurt that I store in my hotel room’s fridge at no extra cost. Plus, to be perfectly candid, sometimes when travelling with my kids it’s just easier to have breakfast in our room so that I can save my hollers of Just Eat Your Breakfast! and Sit In Your Chair Properly! to the confines of our private hotel room.

Not everyone loves a “free” breakfast.

So where did I leave you last week? I had no expectations of ever talking over the family business, I worked elsewhere before working for my dad, and I continued to learn the business from experts (other than my father) by continuing to work outside the family business. So now what?

Learn All Aspects of the Business. Finishing an undergrad at McGill University marked my return to Accent Inns. With a Psych Degree under my belt and no brainwaves about what to do with it, I humbly accepted a job in the family business. Luckily I didn’t have to clean rooms again, nor go back to the front desk where I began. But there were other places I’d never tried, such as the sales team. Cold calling was such a great skill to learn that I recommend it to all the young women that I mentor. Learning to pick up the phone, walk confidently through a door that says No Soliciting, squelch that fear in your stomach while you bravely make the ask and fine tuning those public speaking skills. No matter what job you end up in, you’ll always have to convince someone of something. Sales experience rocks.

Follow Your Passion. Even as a sales manager I had no expectations of moving up in the company (I was still believing my Dad’s yarn about the family biz never being passed down). As far as I was concerned this was a great job, post university, to really figure out what I wanted to do with my life. While sales and cold calling were extremely hard and most definitely not my forte, what I loved to do was brainstorm about what the company needed to do and where it needed to go. My dad started including me in his Head Office Meetings and I soon became an advisor to the President (dear old dad). I’d say, “Why aren’t we doing this?” and before you knew it, I was responsible for doing that. And so my dad let me follow my passions, my ideas and ultimately my ambition.

Get Training. After a few years of taking on larger projects and seeing the bigger picture of running a hotel chain, I thought to myself, this is pretty darn cool! I also realized that I just didn’t have the skills to take my ambition farther. So I went back to school and got an executive MBA from Royal Road University. I’ll be perfectly honest; not having the skills wasn’t my only reason for going back to school. I was young and still fairly inexperienced. I knew that if I wanted to command the respect of my colleagues I needed those letters after my name.

Apply that Training. An executive education was excellent for me because it allowed me to apply all my learning to the family business while working full time. Great for the business, but even better for dispelling my reputation as just “the boss’s kid”. By the end of my MBA I was leading the company through a 3-year strategic planning exercise. It soon became clear to me and probably everyone else in the company that maybe my dad hadn’t been telling the truth all these years.

Terry Farmer, a great mentor!

Learn by Osmosis. Immediately after finishing my MBA, I was named VP of the company, a direct signal as to where we were headed. But there was still a lot to learn and to be brutally honest, as much as I look up to my dad as an amazing businessperson, he just isn’t a great teacher. So how was I going to learn everything that I needed to know? Well, I moved into his office (which we still share to this day). I listened in on all his phone calls, meetings and heads popping in the door. Then I would ask relentless questions about why, who, what, when, really? And slowly my apprenticeship began.

Terry Farmer enjoys `semi-retirement`

Founders, Please Let Go. There comes a time when every founder must let go, even if it’s just a little bit. My dad loves his job and was nowhere near ready for retirement, even though by this point he was pushing 70. Passing the torch is a humungous change that can bring a lot of fear to all those involved. So we took baby steps on this. Dad started talking longer weekends and vacations plus more volunteer work while I took on more and more of the responsibilities at work.

Founders – Seriously, Please Let Go! Okay, my mom kinda helped out on this one. I took over in July and Terry was still around. I could tell it was confusing to our team as to whom they should report to. I mean, Terry was still there, so should they just go and talk to him, or me? The correct answer was me, but how do you break the habit of a team that has worked together for over a decade? The solution was my mom whisking my father away on two back-to-back month long cruises. The problem was solved by the time he came back.

Terry Farmer enjoys time with his Grandchildren

Next Gen: Never Kick the Founders Out; So by now, he’s finally out of the office more than he is in, but I still rely on the wisdom that my father has to offer. I feel an immense sense of security know that he is looking over my shoulder ready to catch a mistake. And basically this IS my dad’s company. Sure I’m one of the owners too and I lead the team as President and CEO, but it’s still his company and his baby. He will always have an office with us, even if he only comes in for a few hours a day. My dad spends most of his time these days vacationing with my mom around the world. When he’s home, he’s tireless in all of his community philanthropy and playing with his beloved grandchildren.

You often hear the expressions “it’s lonely at the top”. Well luckily, I’ve got my dad right here beside me (literally), eavesdropping on my conversations, strategizing about our next move and sharing stories as to what my kids did that morning. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

So there’s our story. Now what about you? Do you have any succession tips you’d like to share? Any questions about how we did it? I’d love to hear from you.
