The gothic subculture is found in many countries around the world, but it began in England during the early 1980s as the gothic rock scene, an offshoot of the post-punk genre. Goth music includes a number of different styles including gothic rock, deathrock, post-punk, darkwave, Ethereal, and neoclassical. Styles of dress within the subculture range from deathrock, punk and Victorian style attire, or combinations of the above, most often with dark attire, makeup and hair. It’s a pretty splendid thing to see a group of goths decked out in full spooky regalia.

One of our favorite classic goths is the ever-glamorous performer Siouxsie Sioux:

Goths are famously fond of Tim Burton’s movies, so many members of the subculture are in a tizzy right now because of the recent release of Dark Shadows, starring Johnny Depp the vampire Barnabas Collins:
The film is based on the 1960s-70s soap opera by the same name. The show would later serve as inspiration and entertainment for many avid goths.

We celebrate World Goth Day every day with appropriately dark products like Tissue Noir (goths get sniffles too, so why not enable them to blow their noses with style?), Death Mints that come in their very own coffin-shaped tin, and the Edgar Allan Poe Lunchbox and Edgar Allan Poe Oil Painting. Poe, who is all around awesome as far as we’re concerned, is also beloved by goths. Our Yes/No Fingerless Gloves complement just about any goth outfit. It’s a well known fact that spookiness and mustaches always make a winning combination.

May 3rd was Hug Your Cat Day, which should not to be confused with Hug Someone Else’s Cat Day, which falls on June 4th.

We love cats and we love hugging our cats too, even though sometimes they aren’t too keen on it. So while we may have technically missed this holiday, we’re pretty sure we celebrated without even knowing it.

May 6th is National Nurses Day, which sounds like a great reason to gift a nurse with some of our fun designer bandages or the First Aid Indian Educational Poster.

May 9th is Lost Sock Memorial Day. We all have sad orphan socks in our drawers. This is the day we need to take them out and honor the memory of their lost siblings, turn the orphaned sock into a puppet, and then go out and buy a fresh new pair of socks.

May 14th is National Dance Like a Chicken Day!

“Call up your local oom pah band, because today we Vogeltanz until we drop. Or, gather all the Arrested Development fanatics you know and start a round of your worst chicken dance impersonations. Or introduce your own interpretation of how a chicken might dance. All of the above apply, as long as your moves are fowl.” Whatever you do, the day can only be improved by including some of our Rubber Chicken items.

May 23rd is Lucky Penny Day. On this day finding lucky pennies on the ground is exponentially luckier, so keep your eyes peeled. But remember, don’t pick up that penny unless you see Abraham Lincoln’s face staring up at you. And if you decide to pick it up anyway, you’d better have some of our Jinx Removing Spray on hand to fend off bad luck.
