Highest on today's yuk factor is this story: "Seven local companies get A+ in equal benefits" No wonder lawyers are seen as the scourge of society. Being thrilled at scoring 100%
on provision of benefits to homosexuals? Recruiting at GLBT events? One's worldview should be a factor when choosing a lawyer, just like it should when choosing a President. Oh, yeah. We blew that one, too. No pun intended, GLBT people.

Stimulus Whores - Texas Medical Center

New phrases and concepts constantly pop-up in my poor brain. Some of them are worth keeping, some become blog labels. "Stimulus whores" came to mind when I read "$100 million in grants thrill Medical Center ...Three institutions will receive the research grants as part of a $5 billion stimulus package the president announced to fight disease and create jobs."

I always thought of the Texas Medical center as having slightly more dignity than banks and car manufacturers. Guess I was wrong.

Note the other label for this post: "buying votes." Big Government and Big Money make for Bad Medicine, at least for the taxpayers. Somebody stick a condom on the heads of the Texas Medical Center decision-makers. Please.

Bob "Forrest Gump" McNair

Bob McNair is the Forrest Gump of NFL ownership. Stupid Is As Stupid Does. McNair had little history of managing a successful organization prior to purchasing the Texans franchise (what does it take to run a utility company, other than tenure?), a fact that is
painfully displayed each football season. Bad hiring decisions and generally bad management decisions have the Texans forever mired in mediocrity.

Changing coaches and the front office would help only if McNair got lucky and hired people who actually are smart enough and experienced enough to do their jobs. But who is to say he will get lucky? And who is to say that any experienced, smart coach in his right mind would work for an owner who has demonstrated time after time that he is in way over his head in terms of being able to run a professional sports organization?

In the immortal words of Ronald Reagan, "Mr. McNair, tear down that wall of self-deception and false pride." Sell the Texans and give the team's fans a ray of hope.

Do Employers Really Need An H1N1 Policy?

One of the dumbest statements passed along like the swine flu itself is this quote from Rob Ireland, partner at Mansfield Communications Inc. Mr. Ireland, who wants you to engage his firm and actually pay good money to have him produce a swine flu policy for your organization, says, “If [employers] are talking, it’s not getting through. That’s a bit staggering, given that the U.S. government and President Obama have asked companies to be more transparent and provide extended sick leave. And yet companies have a head-in-the-sand approach.” He also says, " “During a pandemic, employers must become trusted sources of information and help employees make the right choices.”

Gee, Rob, maybe employers have their heads stuck in the sand because it's better than having their heads stuck up the posteriors of pompous, policy-selling consultants like you? Maybe employers have not seen a pandemic, unless maybe you are talking about the pandemic of vaccine-selling drug companies and ad-selling media outlets who are pushing the lies about an H1N1 pandemic for fun and profit.

et tu, SHRM? HR Professionals need books and tapes on H1N1? Why not just pass out drug company brochures instead? What is it that has SHRM so heavily invested in the swine flu scam-- political correctness? mass hysteria? lawyers? the profit motive?

Really, SHRM, should you not be in the business of cool rationale and truth-finding, and not taking advantage of media-created mass hysteria to hawk books and tapes? I'm searching the site for "squalene-induced illnesses and deaths." hmmmm, can't seem to find them.
