They certainly don't - the most plausible explanations for country-to-country variations are a) underreporting in the original location (Mexico) because they weren't prepared to report them and b) different healthcare and epidemic response systems and c) demographic variations.

Thanks for cogently elaborating & expanding on Ng's rather poor application of basic stats 101. Nicely done!

Personally, I'm not too sure if LWL's suggestion should be taken too seriously, despite the hitherto low virulence of H1N1. For every doc who says that the risk of allowing "natural" transmission of H1N1 is justified by the reward of natural immunity, there are others that strongly advise against it due to the heightened risk on populations with weak immune systems (e.g. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/8045896.stm). It will not be pleasant to see hospitals full of isolation wards crowded with young 'uns and old folk.

Can S'pore (and the world, if it is a full-blown pandemic) spare the medical resources to cope with the strain? It may be more fiscally and politically prudent to just boost Tamiflu production and focus on research into a vaccine in time for the NH winter flu season.
