Adult acne starts with an understanding of how a pimple forms. Cleansing skin care can only work by understanding the cycle.

How does a Pimple Form? Clogged pores, oil, and bacteria are three of the main causes of acne and according to leading dermatologists, the more points you can intervene at during the acne cycle, the better results you'll get.

Step 1 - The pore, which is also the opening of the hair follicle, becomes clogged with dead skin cells, dirt, and oil.

Step 2 - Acne bacteria feed off the oil in the clogged pore and literally attract white blood cells to the area.

Step 3 - Your body then responds with inflammation that causes the redness, swelling, and pain associated with the pimple.

Do you ever wonder why some of us only get blackheads while others get full-blown breakouts? Genetics, hormones, environmental factors, and immunity all play a role in the development of acne. The inflammation response that causes a pimple is really our bodies' immune response to foreign material (sebum) which penetrates into the dermis. The greater the immune response, the more severe the acne becomes.

Adult acne takes the form of one of five types, which each require their own unique cleansing skin care regimen that are uniquely tailored to their adult acne type.

1. Blackheads and whiteheads are both types of comedones, which is another term used to describe a clogged pore. These are most common in what's call the T-Zone, which is comprise of the forehead, nose, and chin.

2. A pustule is a lesion that contains a mixture of white blood cells, dead skin cells, and bacteria, otherwise known as pus.

3. Papules are another type of blemish but these are solid raised bumps - not squeezable. Papules lend a rough feel to the skin and are caused by a local reaction to the acne bacteria that causes acne. These are most common on the cheeks and along the jaw line.

4. Like a papules, a nodule is a solid lesion. A nodule is characterized like inflammation and this type of blemish extends into deeper layers of the skin that usually cause pain and scarring.

5. Cysts occur deep in the skin and contain pus. They are larger than pustules and are usually severely inflamed. They may be very painful and often result in scarring.

In this series on cleansing skin care, we are discussing adult acne and specific acne skin care.

Question by Stronger than yesterday: Some of my acne marks are peeling - is this a good thing?
Have had adult acne for about 3 years now...it's getting better. Tried pro-activ and everything out there. I've just been prescribed birth control (yaz) by my dermatologist & continuing "benzaclin" antiobiotic cream. I've just bought Clinique's acne bar soap, exofoliating scrub & "lotion" and have added is w. the moisturizer I always use and now my skin is feeling more soft, clean, and most importatnly my zits have shrunk and all the oil is gone - it's GREAT! I'm on my 3rd day with no complaints. Thing is, my pimples are just bumps now. There's no more oil and I can't pop them anymore. There are some bumps that hurt really bad and get red easily and now they're peeling off and shrinking...what happened?

Answer by Hershika
Yeah, it is. Depending on what is peeling. If the scabs are peeling then its good and there is clear skin under the peeling then that is even better. So I think your acne is pretty much healing on its own. Whatever your doing, your skin really likes it. So keep it up.

Acne is a condition that millions of people have across the globe but acne does not just appear for no reason or because some people are born with it. You will find out some powerful tips you can start using to become acne free with no dangerous acne treatments.

~ Stop consuming processed bread and sweets ~

Most doctors and dermatologists say that acne is not related to diet, but I can confidently tell you that there is indeed a link. In my own practice, my acne cleared up after about 1 week when I stop eating too much grain and sugar. I wish I would have known this information when I was younger. Since I have come to understand the influence of grains on health, acne has been a non-issue for me.

~ Remove dead skin cells ~

This must be done daily because dead skin cells block the pores, which cause acne. Exfoliating products will do the trick in clearing those pores for acne free skin. Use them with a facial scrub every morning and night and you should end up with a clean skin without acne causing oil.

~ Stop using acne-causing products ~

There are certain acne creams that in the long run help the factors that cause acne. If you use cosmetic products watch out for the ones that are comedogenic. Comedogenic ingredients cause acne cosmetica and can worsen your condition. Immediate relief products are great once in a while, but remember that the true success comes in the long term.

Follow just these first 3 tips everyday and start seeing great results. These are the most basic and sometimes the most forgotten tips relating acne. Be sure to also while improving your face health; improve your overall health, skin treatments respond better to a wholesome approach. Good luck.

Almost all adults have had the experience of acne and how painful can it get. It becomes a necessity to go for the most suitable treatment to get rid of the acne problem. A few simple steps and you can see your acne vanish within days.

1) Drink ample amount of water: Water flushes out toxic components from your body and makes your skin glow. Drink as much as 12 glasses of water each day. Drink Water!

2) Wash your face Every Day: Washing your face daily with cold water will help clear out those acne fast. Use an antibacterial soap with cold water to wash your face.

3) Light Make Up: Keep your make up simple, as it will protect your skin from those harmful chemicals in the makeup OR don't wear make up. Not every guy likes girls who covers their faces in powder, its a real turn of for me.

4) Eat Healthy: Fruits and vegetables are must in your meals. The processed foods, canned or frozen food items must be avoided. Try to keep distance from junk food. Take as much as possible of apples, blueberry, pear, papaya, watermelon, carrot, cauliflowers, peas, cucumber, corn, etc.

5) Live Healthy: Try to avoid the oily food at parties and get together. Eat less of chocolates and sweets. Cook Stir Fry, it takes 5-10 minutes chuck loads of vegetables in a Wok and add some stir fry sauce, add some poultry and cook some rice that will end up being a very healthy and delicious meal.

6) Take Minerals and Vitamins: Our body requires essential vitamins and minerals in specified amounts. So maintain a regular intake of vitamin B2, B5, B3, B6,C and minerals like calcium, zinc, manganese, inositol, etc. This is not just if you have Acne but in general you should always ensure you are taking your vitamins.

7) Vapor Your Face with Towel: Try to gently touch the acne area of your skin with a towel scampered with hot water. Be very careful, it will reduce inflammation of acne. I do this every night before I go to bed and although I am not sure if it works it makes me feel much cleaner.

Use Toothpaste over Acne: Surely, this will sound absurd to you but the ingredients in toothpaste are very effective in clearing the blackheads. Apply toothpaste over acne-infected skin before sleeping every night. I've tried this technique before and although it does work watch out that you don't apply too much toothpaste because your so excited. I did this once and woke up to a VERY red face the toothpaste has an acid in which burns of the layer of skin which makes the spot look red however if you use too much it could burn off too much skin.

These are some of the common yet less followed tips to wipe out acne. Following the above-mentioned tips will set you on your way to getting rid of your Acne.

Question by ☮MuSe☮: Gynecologist appointment today, I have a question!?
Sorry for asking again:

Today I'm going to the gyno for an appointment to get birth control. I have terrible PMS that lasts over a week, hormonal acne, TERRIBLE cramps, etc. Basically everything that it would treat. I also have PCOS, and I know that would help with some of those symptoms, too.

The last time I went though, I had to get a check up. That was about 5 months ago. Since then, I have a new boyfriend. I know for a fact that he was a virgin 100% when we started doing things sexually, and we always ALWAYS have protected sex. If I tell her that I have a new partner, will she want to do another exam?

Also, when I went last it was to get on the pill, but I was told that since I may have PCOS I would have to have tests done. I ended up having a vaginal ultrasound, and was told I "didn't have cysts" and I "probably didn't have PCOS" even though I DID have cysts at the time and I'm 99% sure I do have it. It was an expensive procedure, and they referred me to a fertility doctor for more tests. The doctor's visit alone was 0, and the other tests (24 hour urine and blood glucose) were going to be expensive too.

I would rather just be treated for all the symptoms of PCOS and just general period problems ASAP. No matter what I have, taking the pill wouldn't be bad. Can I just demand it? Last time I tried, but she kept insisting on the tests.

Help!

Adult Acne ? Treatments

Adult Acne is difficult to treat. In younger age, acne is caused because of blocking of sebaceous glands because of over activity of hormones. In adult age the cause of acne may be different. It is therefore difficult to treat adult acne. But it can be treated successful.

Cause- Find out why you got acne during later age. The reason may be hormones, menopause in women, pregnancy, and acne because of mechanical causes or reactions from some chemicals or cosmetics. If you can remove the cause it becomes easier to treat acne.

Normally the following treatments are suggested for adult acne-

Hormones- if hormonal disturbance is suspected it can be treated with oral pills, HRT or spironolactone. This is prescription medicine and should be carefully monitored. Hormones are not to be taken during pregnancy. HRT is commonly prescribed during menopause. Your doctor is the best person to decide about the kind of therapy you need.

Oral Medication-

Isotretinoin is used if acne is severe or does not respond to other treatments. Oral anti bipotics are also used to bring acne under control. Along with topical retinoids oral antibiotics can treat most of the cases of acne. Pl. note that retinoids can cause dryness and peeling of skin. Use the retinoid carefully with moisturizer. Sunscreen should be used when you apply retinoids because retinoids make skin sensitive to sun.

Retinoids are very good to treat non-infalmatory comedones such as whiteheads and blackheads. They also remove fine wrinkles so that is added benefit. If retnoids are used at the early stage of acne that can even prevent acne formation.

Topical Treatment- benzoyl peroxide is the most common ingredient in topical formulations. Other ingredients that are used in topical medications include- salycilic acid, antibiotics, retinoids, sulphur etc. Use a topical that causes minimum dryness. You can also combine a retinoid with benzoyl peroxide. Similarly antibiotics can be used along with retinoids.

Adult acne can not be fought with OTC formulations. Get a prescription product to treat adult acne because skin becomes more sensitive with aging.

Acne Skin Care Treatment : Over-the-counter Treatments

Are you an acne sufferer? You may be thinking about the many convenient over-the-counter methods for treating your acne.

You are not alone. As a go-to solution, most people who are acne sufferers will just go to their local pharmacy and buy medication over-the-counter, based on whatever knowledge or information that they get. It could be recommendations from family members and friends, it could be that impressive sales copy from a magazine, it could be that television ad.

However, it is highly advisable to seek consultation with a qualified doctor before you get your hands on any kind of over-the-counter products. The doctor is able to give you his professional opinion on the best and most suitable course of acne skin care treatment for your case.

You can find large numbers of acne skin care treatment products hitting the shelves regularly, and so deciding on which is the best product can be a daunting task. You may be influenced by your friends. But what worked for your friends, may not necessarily work well on you. Your friends may have different levels of complexity of the acne condition, so it is really difficult to judge. The best way is to do your own research on the active ingredients in various acne skin care treatment medications. Here, I have outlined two of the most popular ingredients in acne treatments.

Benzoyl Peroxide

This is one of the most popular active ingredients in acne treatment medications. Found in ointments and gels, the benzoyl peroxide does it's job by fighting the bacteria which causes your acne. Not only that, it will also remove dead skin cells that collect on the surface of your skin. What has it got to do with skin cell? Well, it is these dead skin cells which, when combined with sebum, create the unsightly blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples.

Benzoyl peroxide has so far been proven to be safe and effective. It can also be used as an after-care solution to keep your skin free from the bacteria that causes acne. But like all the other ingredients out there, benzoyl peroxide does have one side effect. Prolonged usage of this ingredient will lead to dry skin. However, this can be prevented by slowly decreasing the frequency of the benzoyl peroxide that is applied to your skin.

Salicylic Acid

Besides the benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid is another popular ingredient used in acne treatment medications. What this acid does is to mainly clear up the dead skin cells which may accumulate too quickly, clogging up the pores as a result. The salicylic acid should continue to be used even after your skin is cleared of acne, to prevent any future outbreaks. Like benzoyl peroxide, the salicylic acid will cause you to have dry and irritated skin.

It is safe to say that the benzoyl peroxide is the most versatile among all the other ingredients for the battle against acne. It can be used in cleansing liquids, lotion, cream and gels which can be applied directly onto your skin. The creams and lotions can be applied onto the affected areas as and when required, while the cleansing medications are usually applied once or twice a day.

Just a word of caution : avoid getting the benzoyl peroxide into contact with your eyes, mouth or nose, as it will cause inflammation and some irritation.

There are a number of treatments available for acne treatment; however, not all of them are to be trusted as affective and helpful. Most of them have severe side affects along, if not used under proper medical supervision. Many people simply take up these over the counter drugs to treat any breakouts that occur, and this may result in more irritation of the skin as well as allergic reactions. Antibiotics, gels, creams, herbal medications are all available over the counter, but instead of grabbing all of them at once, use the lighter, basic ones first.

Before using acne treatments, you have to understand the skin type and which treatment would suit your skin. Acne that is not inflamed can use SALICYLIC ACID products. Use it according to the instructions and if after weeks you still find the condition the same, then you can move on to another product. Acne which is inflamed and give a reddish look can be treated by benzoyl peroxide, the most commonly used over the counter acne treatment. The lotion can be applied for weeks and also mixed with salicylic acid.

Common over the counter acne treatments are products related to BENZOYL PEROXIDE, SALICYLIC ACID, SULFUR & RESORCINOL, ALCOHOL and ACETONE. These come in different strength level ranging from 2.5% to 10% and are packed under products named as PROACTIVE, BENZADERM GEL, GLYTON and many other creams. Sulfur products come with strength level of 2% to 8% and have products such as Clearasil Medicated Blemish Cream, Rezamid Lotion, Glytone Flesh Tinted Acne Treatment Lotion. Salicylic acid has Noxzema Anti-Acne Gel and Dermalogica Medicated Clearing Gel.

Other than the regular acne, if you are suffering from severe acne that doesn’t seem to get over with the regular lotions and gels, then it’s time to take antibiotics. These will help to eliminate the bacteria causing the acne. But before using antibiotics, you will need to consult with a doctor, as these cause severe side affects of vomiting, nausea, lethargic, depression and other factors. Pregnant women who get acne should strictly consult a doctor as drinking these antibiotics may cause severe birth affects.
