Whiteheads or Closed Comedos – Whiteheads appear white, true to their name. They are tiny white lumps present on the skin. This is the mildest form of acne, formed when the follicle is not able to push up through the surface of the skin. Hence, it appears as a white comedo within.

Blackheads or Open Comedos – Blackheads are black in color because they have an excess activity of melanin, the pigment that colors skin. Most people think that blackheads trap dirt particles and hence appear black, but that is not so. Blackheads are much larger than whiteheads. They are clogged follicles that have been able to come out of the surface of the skin.

Papules – Papules are the mildest forms of acne that are inflammatory. They are shown as pink tender lumps on the skin. Most papules are soft to touch.

Nodules – Nodules counts among the most distressing form of acne. They are inflammatory. They happen when the follicles are not able to come out of the skin and erupt within. Because of this, the immune system of the body releases white blood corpuscles that try to fight the follicles and then die out as pus. The pus remains trapped within the skin forming the nodules. Nodules are not easily treatable.

Acne conglobata – Acne conglobata counts among some of the rarest types of acne. This does not occur on the face, but on other areas such as back, chest and buttocks. The main cause is a bacterial infection.

Cotton Ball Soaked In Vinegar
Dip a cotton ball in vinegar. Wipe your face with the soaked cotton. Using your fingers, massage your face in upwards circular motion, for two minutes. The vinegar will work on the bacteria, thereby killing them. This process will cleanse the pores as well. Rinse your face with cold water thereafter. Make sure that you do not use too much of vinegar, as an overdose may cause skin irritation.

Oatmeal Mask for Acne

You may either leave it overnight or rinse it off with water after half an hour.

Mashed Banana
Take out the pulp of half banana and mash it well, with your hand. In a small bowl, mix the mashed banana pulp with one tablespoon of honey. Mix it well. Now, add sour cream to the mixture and blend it thoroughly, to form a paste. Apply the paste on your face and leave it until it is completely dry. Wash off with water, thoroughly.

Tips to rid acne
Drink plenty of water. This will keep your skin hydrated and free of acne.
Consume a diet rich in Zinc, Vitamin A and Vitamin B6.
Stay away from fried foods, especially if you have an oily skin. This applies to other skin types as well.
Avoid processed foods, because they constitute one of the reasons for the onset of acne.

Home Remedies For Acne

Mix equal amounts of lemon juice and rose water. Apply this mixture on the affected areas with cotton and leave it for an hour. Continue doing this for about 15 to 20 days to have the desired results.

Avocado skin care

Avocado paste, made with the help of water, consists of a natural remedy for getting rid of acne. Use it like a face wash, making sure to gently rub it on your face for 5 minutes. Then, wash it off with water.

Another option you can go for is a bath with blanch of nettle and rosemary. This will help reduce your acne.

Honey to cure acne
Mix 1 tsp of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and squeeze 1/2 lemon juice to help pimples. Drink this every morning, on an empty stomach.

Combine a tablespoon of dried or fresh yeast with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. Apply this combination on your face and keep it on till it dries off. Now, wash it with warm water.

For getting rid of acne, mix 2-3 tsp tea with some basil. Cook this mixture in boiling water for about 10 to 20 minutes. Then, cool it down and apply on the affected areas with a cotton ball.

Honey and cinnamon powder are also beneficial for treating acne. Make a paste of the two and apply on the infected area before going to sleep. Wash your face next morning.

Another option is to blend one tablespoon of groundnut oil with one tablespoon of lime juice. Apply on the affected areas for 15 minutes ans wash off.

Mix turmeric powder with mint juice and form a paste. Apply this on the acne-infected area and keep on for 30 minutes. After that, wash it with lukewarm water.

Pomegranate and acne

Make a paste of roasted & powdered pomegranate skin, with fresh lime juice. Apply this mixture on the affected area.

Hormonal changes stimulate the oil producing skin glands causing them to become plugged by excessive skin and oil cells trying to exit. These glands are situated within the pores of the skin around hair follicles. Once these glands become plugged, the hair follicle will bulge and form whiteheads. The top of this plug may darken and form a blackhead.

Causes of  pimples are the next step. These are formed when the follicle wall ruptures and allows bacteria on the skin’s surface to enter into the skin causing the area to become infected. Sometimes a more painful cyst will form but only if the infection is deep within the skin. This condition is the most painful of the types mentioned in this article.

While acne is normally found on the face, it can also appear on the neck, shoulders, chest and back and less commonly on the arms and legs.

Acne can be aggravated by – excessive dirt and oil on the surface of the skin – hormonal changes caused by menstruation or pregnancy – stress – certain drugs such as testosterone or cortisone

Acne tends to be more prominent in some families than others, it is hereditary. It is not a contagious condition and can be treated.

How can acne be treated? A variety of treatments are available but the most common are the following. They are designed to cure existing acne and to prevent further acne from appearing.

Most medications applied to the infected area are designed to dry it out and will cause some peeling of the skin. Some of the most commonly used chemicals in these medications are sulfur, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, retinoids or resorcinol.

Antibiotics taken orally, such as tetracycline, are often prescribed. While effective they can discolor teeth permanently. For this reason they are not normally prescribed for children. Some antibiotic medications are topical, meaning that they can be applied directly to the skin.

What other methods are there to reduce acne? Exposing the skin to the sun can improve the condition, keeping in mind of course that too much exposure to the sun can cause sunburn and increases the risk of skin cancer.

Washing the skin regularly with warm water to reduce dirt, oil and to remove make-up will help. Taking a shower immediately after exercising is recommended. Shampoo hair regularly, preferably with an anti dandruff shampoo.

For those with long hair it pays to keep it away from the face, so comb or tie it back.

Often the most difficult thing to do is not to touch the infected areas but this is most important. Touching, rubbing or picking at the pimples will only worsen the situation as you are only exposing the area to more skin damage. A common mistake is to rest your head on your hands, causing more aggravation of the skin.

Lastly, everyone is different and each person may have their own foods or creams that may cause acne. Look out for things that trigger the worsening of your acne and then avoid them.

You can’t prevent acne but you can manage and improve the condition with medication and gentle care and regular cleansing of the skin.

A blackhead is not dirt, it cannot be washed away. You should not squeeze a blackhead with your finger.
