Just like the violin, the double bass instrument evolved from the viol in Europe.

Fine bass models are made out of solid spruce wood for the front of the instrument, solid maple wood for the back, the sides and the neck of the instrument and either boxwood, rosewood or ebony wood for the tailpiece, the fingerboard and the tuning pegs. Both the front of the instrument and the back of the instrument are carved into a shape that is similar to a shallow bowl. The front and the back plates of this instrument have to confirm to an exact specification for thickness in order for the instrument to perform the way that it was created to.

Carved solid wood types of instruments typically are capable of creating a richer tone, but they also tend to be significantly more expensive in comparison to instruments with carved spruce tops and sides and backs that are made using a high quality plywood that has been molded into the appropriate shape. There are also bass instruments that are even less expensive in cost, and these are instruments that entirely consist of a high grade plywood material that has been molded into the appropriate shape.

Bass strings are typically made out of fine metal wire that has been wrapped around either silk or a polymer thread. The string type for each bass is going to depend on whatever music the bassist is interested in playing. The strings are responsible for fastening to a tailpiece, and then they pass over the bridge, which is a carved piece of good that is typically made from a very dense type of maple. Then the strings pass over the nut, a raised part of the fingerboard located at the instrument's scroll, or head. From there, the strings next pass into the instrument's peg box and this is where the strings are tuned by way of either wooden pegs or metal screws.

The full size bass is approximately 5 feet tall, and it has four strings, which are numbered from one to four. The first string is the string that is the furthest from the person playing the instrument. There are also 5 string and 5 string varieties of the stand up bass which were develop to expand the number of different notes that a bassist can reasonably play using their instrument. Bassists use their right hand in order to pluck at and to bow the strings. In jazz and bluegrass music, the bass is used almost exclusively by way of plucking rather than bowing. It is up to the player whether they pluck or bow the strings, but both choices do have an impact on the music that results.

Two of the most intriguing drums from the family of drums are the bongo drums and the conga drums.

The bongo is a small version of the average drum, and actually incorporates two different open ended drums together. These two drums are joined together with one another, meaning that bongos always come in groups of two. The drum heads for bongo drums are most commonly constructed from animal skins, though you can also buy bongo drums with plastic heads. The body of the drum is either made from ceramic, wood or metal. What makes bongos unique is the fact that each of the two drums is a different size, which is why each of the drums sounds unique to the other. In order to play the bongo drums well, you have to be able to coordinate well between them.

A pair of simple bongos does not have the stretchable drum head that you can tune in order to play different notes. Better quality bongos do offer this, however. The way that you play bongos is actually quote interesting. You use your finger tips, the heel of your hand and your thumbs to make the sound. You can strike the head with different parts of your hands in order to generate different sounds. Special drum oil is required in order to protect the drum heads on your bongo drums, otherwise your hand and the air will take all of the moisture out of the skin of the bongo drum head, making the skin dry and paving the way for cracks, warps and other issues that will change the sound in a negative way.

The best thing about bongo drums is how small they are, because they are not expensive and are extremely portable. If you know how to play the bongos, you can inject your music stylings into bands and music of all genres to create new and interesting sounds.

Conga drums are almost like bongos, though they are much taller and larger than the smaller, portable drums. Conga drums are single headed with slender builds. They are Cuban drums but it is believed that hey are derived from African history. The shells of most conga drums are fiberglass or wood. The playing system for the conga drum is a lot like playing a bongo, the conga drum is simply much taller. Congas are used both in folk music and in popular music as well. African music has made a great deal of use including Rumba, Afro Caribbean, Latin, Salsa and many other styles of music.

Bongos and congas are quite similar in nature with one another, only that one is smaller or larger than the other. The sound is not completely similar, but they do sound alike. Both are rhythmic drumming instruments with similar playing styles, and both are quite popular and can be implemented in nearly all types of music.

From the beginning, Gibson established himself as a quality instrument builder who added his own innovations. His mandolins were modified in such a way that they had a richer sound. Eventually, Gibson mandolins became the instrument of choice for bluegrass musicians. In 1936, Gibson introduced the ES-150 "Electric Spanish" guitar, continuing its tradition of innovation. The ES-150 is now known to be the first commercially produced electric guitar to become popular in the marketplace.

In 1960, Gibson brought out its line of acoustic guitars, starting with the 16 inch, square shouldered dreadnought style. The J-160E was one of the first Gibson models made as a hybrid acoustic and electric guitars. These guitars eliminated the common problem of playing unamplified acoustic guitars in live settings. Playing into a microphone can often serve to amplify the sound, but it also lets distortion and interference seep in. The musician is also limited because he or she cannot stray too far from the microphone without losing sound.

This was actually Gibson's second acoustic-electric guitar, but the first model never really caught on with musicians. The new model used a single-pickup with electronics placed into a regular dreadnought style acoustic guitar. The first models were made of plywood, with ladder bracing for added rigidity. The later models were X-braced, which was thought to improve the tone and volume of the instrument. There were elaborate crown inlays in the fingerboard, along with an adjustable bridge and single-coil pickup. The pickup was located on top of the body near the fingerboard, making it similar to the floating type of pickup used on some acoustic guitars. Unfortunately, the J-160E's sound never became very popular, with many musicians saying it sounded like a hollowed out electric guitar more than an amplified acoustic guitar.

In 1962, Gibson introduced the Dove flat-top model, which was cosmetically very different than the earlier guitars. It had a slightly changed body style and stylistic features like a cherry finish, multi-layered binding, double parallelogram fingerboard inlays, and new style of pickguard that was engraved with a depiction of flowers and a dove. The Dove guitars had a maple back and sides, along with a spruce top that gave a rich, full sound. The neck was made of maple with rosewood for the fingerboard.

One major innovation on the Dove acoustic-electric guitars was the inclusion of electronic features powered by an onboard battery. The tune-o-matic metal bridge was another major design point of the Dove model, but it unfortunately affected the tone of the guitar in a negative way. The next model introduced in 1968 further worsened the sound by including a bracing bar through the middle of the guitar. Not only did this affect the tone and volume of the instrument, it also added extra weight and made it difficult to handle. Dove acoustic electric guitars are no longer being manufactured in bulk, but can still be found in special limited-edition runs.

There are a number of reasons to choose an acoustic guitar over electric. Acoustic guitars are easier to play for beginners and can be played almost anywhere. Electric guitars are obviously limited to areas with an electrical outlet to plug in the amplifier. Also, acoustic guitars are generally less expensive than their electric counterparts. Even if the guitar itself is the same price, you will save money by not having to purchase an amplifier.

The first thing to do is decide on the size of acoustic guitar that is best for you.

Of course, your physical size determines how large or small a guitar you can comfortable play. Within those limits, there are several sizes that will probably fit you, so the decision then becomes what type of sound you want from your acoustic guitar. Look at the size of the nut as this also indicates the width of the neck. If you have smaller hands, you may need a narrower neck to be able to reach all of the notes. Remember that the width of the neck goes up as you move upward, so be sure to test out the fit of our hands in all places along the neck.

The type of wood used in the construction of the acoustic guitar can affect the tone it produces.

The most common woods are maple, mahogany, or rosewood. Spruce gives the most balanced tone, which is why it is used on most of the popular steel-stringed models. Maple is the next most balanced tone, a little bit mellower than that produced by a spruce acoustic guitar. Rosewood instruments have a heavier, darker, tone, almost like a bass guitar. Classical guitars are generally made out of cedar and give a somewhat brighter tone. Another popular choice for guitar construction is koa wood, which produces a heavy tone that is still a bit lighter than that of a rosewood guitar.

Decide on the thickness of strings for your acoustic guitar.

Different models may come with different gauges of string, so you may want to ask if the strings can be switched out without affecting the guitar's tone. The standard string gauges are heavy, medium, light, and extra light. Along with affecting the sound, the string thickness may also need to be switched according to the size and strength of your hands. Thinner strings are easier to press down on the neck, but also do not give the full sound of thicker strings.

After you have picked out your new acoustic guitar, you will probably need a few accessories before you can get started. It is a good idea to purchase a guitar case to protect your investment. This is especially important for hollow-bodied acoustic guitars as they are much more vulnerable than a solid electric guitar would be. Another popular guitar accessory is a strap to hold the instrument while you play. This is almost mandatory if you will be playing your guitar standing up. Also, remember to get a selection of guitar picks before leaving the store. Picks come in different sizes, thicknesses, and materials, depending on the strings you have and the type of music you will be playing.
